I got the Landwer Shakshuka while my friends tried the Chicken Shawarma Pita Sandwich and Pesto Caprese Panini. After just visiting their Beacon St. location, I decided to come try this location out to see how consistent their quality was. The food here was as good as the service was bad. And the food was very good. The restaurant has a really cool vibe with a bunch of old timer decorations. It's like you're going back in time to go to a Jewish diner, which is a pretty cool experience. The actual food is delicious: I never order the salmon when I eat out because it's usually not good, but I think the salmon here is worth trying. I also thought the pita bread was very fluffy and I was quite happy with the selection of fairly healthy dishes. Jesse, the host, was very friendly and nice. I also thought the wait staff were nice as well, but there did not appear to be any real accountability or responsibility as to who was covering which table. We never had a waiter, introduce himself or herself to us, so it was a very infuriating game of flagging people down to place orders, ask for additional utensils, ask for plates, order, dessert, etc. I think some active management / training would really benefit this place because the decor is great and the food is great too. read more

i want to absolutely love this restaurant but this time around, i did not. the ambiance of the restaurant and the fall decor was spot on. it is super cute and cozy diner vibes inside. the service wasn't that great. we had to call our server over multiple times for things like refilling our water and getting the check. the food itself was alright. the pumpkin pancakes weren't super sweet. the texture was good. the orange whipped cream didn't have anything special to it aside from being bright orange. overall, wouldn't order them again because there really wasn't a pumpkin flavor to them. i will say i do love the middle eastern kick to the menu. i'd love to try this place again since their menu does have so many options read more

A lovely space to dine. The menu allows for multiple dietary restriction options. During our time at a nearby hotel we had multiple meals in a short time. If I'm the area Cafe Landwer is a great option. The staff is friendly and provided a great dining experience. Order the halloumi as a starter. The fried cheese is perfect. I have thought it was just a coffee place but it is was a full blown restaurant. It was bright with outdoor seating. The hostess seated us. I saw it across the street from Duncan Donuts and now realize that is trying to draw a different clientele than someone just looking for a cup of coffee. The first thing that me were the prices. Ouch. Pricey. It is a good thing I brought my credit card. They have no ice coffee . Just cold brew. That is where an iced latte comes in handy. But they do have steel oats if you are willing to pay for it: 12.00. That is why they take credit cards. I have to say this place is first class with the finishings, just the way it is decorated. I can understand why this place filled right up. With all the seating, I was still lucky to get a seat. They fed me like a king. I had a vegan omelet, Chopped tomato and cucumber, humus, guacamole, yogurt and tomato puree. As it turns out, I was too full for the tomato puree. It tasted like homemade yogurt with blueberries and oats. They asked before they took away my plates. So they should because I was not quite finished. I did have trouble getting the attention of anybody but my waitress. They must not pool tips. I am going to have to come back to try some of the other items on the menu. I wonder what other surprises they have. I would certainly recommend this restaurant for anyone looking for a first class breakfast. read more

Had a stop-in at Landwer earlier this week before a walk around the reservoir. The experience was pretty neutral -- I was neither impressed nor disappointed. My hot latte was warm but not quite hot enough. The flavor was there but not strong or bold. The staff was nice but not noticeably welcoming. Unexpectedly good. Looks can be deceiving and most of the reviews for this spot are for the coffee and breakfast but while staying at the AC next door I was in the search for dinner. It was freezing out so I didn't want to wander far and noticed this place was open for dinner too. Glad I took the plunge. With a middle eastern/ Israeli vibe the dishes all sounded great. I would have been happy with just the bread and oil they give you to start, it was incredible. From there I jumped to hummus and pita (also homemade and awesome) then to lamb chops with grilled veggies and rice. Everything was cooked perfectly and the portions are huge. Ended with a Turkish coffee because why not. Service was friendly. Disappointed I won't be around late enough tomorrow morning for breakfast otherwise I'd gladly come back. Next time.. read more

Very good food and excellent coffee! Nice spacious atmosphere. Service was subpar as of course the place was busy, probably understaffed, etc. but I don't feel like you should have to flag down somebody, anybody, who works there to ask for something. I am polite. I wait. I know wait staff can be busy and have other tables. You don't need to kiss my feet ( but a free nice foot manicure never hurt) ,but if you come around to check in on our meals, it makes the meal experience more memorable and have people wanting to come back and spend more money at your place. read more

Cafe Landwer has legitimately good food. I've eaten there three times and have enjoyed the food every time. The service experience is disappointing and frankly odd. Upon entering the restaurant, I stood alone at the front waiting for someone to seat me. No one came and no one made any eye contact. Finally a server saw me and came over and sat me. After about 15 minutes, a different server came and asked me if I was ready to order. Someone else brought my food a little later. No one came back for the duration. I had to get up and get a water refill. I had to get up and get a napkin because there wasn't one on the table. I had to ask a busser for my check. Then I had to take the check up front to pay. Because no one was coming. I didn't leave a tip because the service was so strange and non-existent, they didn't deserve a tip. It's a shame because the food is pretty good. Hopefully this restaurant will take this review to heart and improve their table service. read more

Where do I begin? 1. We ordered drinks and one of our party had a question about his choice. A few minutes later, someone came over - it turned out to be the manager - to resolve the question. When that was done, she asked what the rest of us were having - none of our drink orders had been sent in. 2. The first of our two appetizers came. Just one problem: we had never been served appetizer plates. We had to flag someone down to get them, by which time the appetizer was cold. 3. Before the second appetizer came, a server started delivering dinner. He didn't know where to put things down because - surprise - we still had our appetizer plates. We said we were still eating our appetizer course, but he just shrugged and stuffed the plates on the table. 4. Now the second appetizer came (!). It was a shared hot dish, but came with no serving utensils. At that point, we all had used our dinner utensils, so we had to flag down another server to get serving spoons. 5. No one checked on us during dinner to see if we needed more water, wanted another drink, etc. 6. Finally, we sat waiting for ten minutes or so after all the plates had been cleared to get a bill. Yikes. To be fair, my companions thought their food was good. (My salmon was an overcooked slab of fish.) These are all management issues: * You train the waitstaff to get drink orders in as quickly as possible (not just to make the customers happy, but because they're you high margin items, so you want to get multiple turns, if possible). * You make sure the servers have appetizer plates on the table *before* the appetizers are served. * You *always* serve shared appetizers with serving utensils. * You time the dinners to come *after* the appetizers have been eaten and the appetizer dishes have been cleared. (If you're one of those haughty-faulutin' restaurants that serves food as soon as it's ready, put that in big letters on your menu.) * You have the waitstaff keep eyes on their tables to see if anyone needs anything and you check, shortly after courses have been served, to make sure everything is okay. (Even in no one indicates that they need anything, you still check on the table once or twice during their dinner.) * Some people differ on this, but I like the server to check on whether the customers want desserts or the check *immediately* after the dinner dishes have been cleared. (You can say to the customers "Here's your check, but no hurry.") It was pretty frustrating for my group of friends and 90% of the issues were avoidable with good training for the waitstaff and the kitchen. (For what it's worth, my parents owned a small restaurant/deli, so this isn't all coming out of the blue.) read more

At this point I'm convinced Cafe Landwer and I are soulmates. If I could marry a place, it would be this restaurant. To be more realistic (and to put it in Yelp terms), I'd give this place infinity stars if I could. I've been here numerous times and have never had a poor visit. The service is great, and the food is amazing! My favorite menu item at the moment is the Chicken Schnitzel Sandwich. The chicken is so tasty, and the pita is incredibly warm and delicious. I also really like the honey mustard dressing. I always get it with an order of their fries. A bit pricy, but so incredibly worth it. A few honorable mentions include the original chicken schnitzel, chicken shawarma, and shakshuka. Also tasty coffee! I tried their Nutella Latte, which was great. We could not be more pleased with our experience at Cafe Landwer. We tried the Landwer's Famous Breakfast and Sinia Shakshuka with the Turkish Coffee. We literally could not put our silverware down! The shakshuka was delicious, with the eggs poached to a perfect runny yolk. The LFB lived up to the hype. The baba ganoush, hummus, and guac were fresh and addictive, while the parfait had the perfect sweet touch to wrap up the meal. The little pistachio treat was an unexpected, but welcomed, surprise. In my party, someone got the fake meat kabobs. I didn't try it. They said it was good but it looked weird to me. I got the chicken schnitzel sandwich. It was fine. The size of the chicken was smaller than the bread which I didn't like and it was pounded quite thin. It was cooked perfectly. I got it because waiter said it was one of the most popular items on the menu. I often order what is recommended. This wasn't a great choice for me. Ambiance was wonderful.
