Hake with squash and castelvetrano olives. Outstanding!

In the area on a Wednesday night for a nearby show. Saw Cafe Kestrel on Yelp and figured I had to try to walk in. They were able to seat me without a reservation because I arrived on the early side. (5:45ish) Entire staff was pleasant and the waitress was such a professional, patient and knowledgeable. The cafe is super cute, seating is comfortable. I was solo dining but ended up having a lovely conversation with the next table. (They were headed for the same show) All of that excellence aside, the food was a true highlight! I opened with an outstanding squash blossom, crispy and topped with a delightful fennel pollen that lent a wonderful flavor. I moved on to the salad that had delicious carrots and red cheddar. It was beautiful and dressed perfectly. For an entree, I selected the hake. Really nice portion of perfectly cooked fish, with outstanding squash and a buttery sauce. One of the better seafood dishes I've had in a while! The waitress recommended the apricot cake and it was truly divine! Tender cake, rich whipped cream, and a luxurious sauce! Definitely look forward to returning!

This place is just around the corner and oh so good. Perfectly quant and cozy. Every dish was 10/10 genuinely can't wait to try the whole menu. Every bite was so good I couldn't believe it. Service was super attentive and the decor is immaculate.

Distinguished by its quaint and charming atmosphere, Cafe Kestrel excels in furthering Red Hook's heightening appeal in fine dining. The restaurant culture is upscale yet modest, and the menu is wonderfully eclectic--just appropriately shy of pretentious. The two of us ordered the fried halloumi, the yellowfin tuna, the crabcake, and the grilled swordfish. We left with a unanimous optimism that Kestrel will cement itself as a must-attend restaurant deserving of widespread recognition. If you're lucky enough to snag a prime time reservation, I would easily recommend dining with the small yet mighty Kestrel staff. I will be back! That being said, if you like to cap your meal with an espresso beverage, take the short walk to Bar Mario for the added indulgence. It's Red Hook after all - there aren't many shortcomings to be found...

Small. Personal. Great food. And nicely curated wine list. Not the easiest to get to, but a nice change.

Fantastic food, unfortunately very small portions so wouldn't suggest if you're hungry. Expertly curated space.

The scones are crunchy and soft with seasonal variations like rhubarb currently. It is 6 dollar a piece. My favorite passionfruit cookie is 4.50. I love a good sour fruit curd in between two soft buttery cookies. I also tried a few of their sandwiches with my favorite being roast beef farmed somewhere in upstate new year and tabled in Brooklyn with a horseradish sauce on a good baked bread. Now I have to fight the urge to stop by weekly.

I'm not a huge fan of their cookies or brownies, but I do appreciate their seasonal pastries and especially their danishes and scones. I appreciate the seasonal change up of the menu and how they use fruits in season to create their pastries. Over the summer I really enjoyed their fig and cheesecake danishes. I don't find many bakeries baking with fig so this was a sweet surprise and they delivered! Their menu switch up each season keeps me intrigued. Their matcha is decent and usually my go to. However, I am not a fan of the soups. They tend to taste bland. However, if you're in the area it's still worth visiting. There is very limited seating.

The cold brew is the perfect balance of bold but not super bitter, and the iced cortado is perfectly balanced. If you can get your hands on the elote cake, grab an extra piece because it's just THAT good. It tastes like a lightly sweetened cornbread that's moist and has real pieces of corn in it. It is the perfect compliment to a coffee and is a great pick if you don't want anything super sweet. They also have treats behind the counter for your pup, which my dog definitely enjoyed! I will be back for coffee and one (or two or three) more pieces of elote cake very soon!

Some would say it's too convenient and accessible to be true. I say that this neighborhood is ripe for all sorts of possibilities, and I am glad the owner (Daniel) sees this vision just as I do. This is a clean, bright, unpretentious spot serving high quality drinks and baked goods. Daniel is a sunset park local who grew up in the neighborhood and has perfected every little detail of this space himself. His enthusiasm is absolutely what the landscape has been needing for so long. I stopped by to grab myself an iced matcha and enjoyed talking about all the other things he has in store for the space. He offered me a taste of the strawberry milk. I generally avoid a lot of sugar but the taste was phenomenal without being overpowering. My drink was made with care, with just a dash of organic strawberry syrup, free of harsh dyes. It was exactly what I needed. Outside the space there is some outdoor seating for you to enjoy a peaceful moment to yourself. There is so much promise this cafe holds and delivers to the neighborhood. If you are a local or even just a commuter, stop by here and grab yourself a morning pick me up. You won't regret it.

The staff is friendly and after you order, they give you a number which they call out once your order is ready. We ordered: - Lentil Sambusa (2 pieces) - Crispy Chicken Caesar Wrap The lentil sambusa was warm and crispy on the outside and filled with flavor on the inside. The crispy chicken caesar wrap completely exceeded my expectations--the crispy fried chicken was delicious and the Romain lettuce, cherry tomatoes and shaved Parmesan complemented it very nicely. I don't like too much dressing, so I'd asked for the Caesar dressing on the side, which they kindly accommodated. I highly recommend you stop by for a tasty meal.

I got in line about 35 to 40 minutes before the race start, and didn't even get to order until 7 minutes until race start. At 2 minutes until race start I asked about the wait time, and they said it was still going to be a few minutes, so I asked if I could get a refund instead because I needed to get to the Start Line (which is roughly 2 minutes away). Then they said, the guy was literally finishing it, so I waited 30 more seconds, he handed me the sandwich, and I had to run for the start. Despite having gotten into the line with dozens of minutes to spare. Food itself, an egg sandwich, was fine, but I didn't really get to enjoy it, as I was literally running as I ate it.
