Heads up, if you come on a Sunday morning, the line will be to the door which you know is a good sign. This was my first time here and was overwhelmed with how large their menu is but I got their golden latte (which I think has butterscotch) and got it with less sugar since I read many reviews that their lattes are really sweet. It was super delicious and I tried my friends matcha and that was also delicious. There isn't much room to sit but would be a great WFH location. read more

By far one of my favorite coffee shops in the Pilsen area. For starters, I highly appreciate their reality of the current economy. Prices are extremely affordable for food and drinks. I was so surprised to see that a Lox Bagel was under 10$. The cheapest I've seen in the city so far! The bagel was delicious and the salmon was extremely fresh. There are so many coffees and drinks that I wanted to try, but I opted for the latte with caramel and my friend had the Thai iced coffee. The latte was smooth and delicious but the Thai coffee gave us diabetes. A little less sugar would more than perfect it! The shop is slightly on the smaller side, so you might have a bit of trouble finding a table if it's busy, but the food and drinks more than make up for it. It's gives "art student hangout spot" but in an extremely comforting way (if you know what I mean). The art on the walls are magnificent! I couldn't stop taking pictures. Great ambiance! Got a cafe con leche and a morning bagel, which comes with cream cheese, tomato and cucumber. I added turkey and avocado as well. So good! Some seating is available inside but not a ton. Service was very friendly, welcoming, and pretty quick considering the morning crowd. Great spot for a quick and delicious breakfast. read more

This is a cute coffee shop. A little small inside so seating is scarce. Service was okay. My iced caramel latte was delicious and perfect for the warm day. They also have fresh juices! My mom got their carrot juice. We sat on the bench outside which I'm pretty sure is meant for the bus stop? But has the business logo on the wood. So I guess it is theirs. read more

I was a preteen when the Jumping Bean first opened. There were many artists. Now I stay away due to gentrification and arrogance from the owners. I remember when we were some of their first customers, but profit has gone to their heads. I don't blame the employees. They work hard. Luckily, there are other cafes now. There have always been panaderias. read more

Great cafe, busy whenever I pass by. I like the atmosphere. Not a ton of seating. I got an iced mexican chocolate and it was perfect for the hot weather. It had some grainy bits in it too that I loved. My friend liked their chai latte too. Their stickers are nice, I like the colorful design. Busy but nice staff. read more

Breakfast bagels and sandwiches are amazing! We had a Lox Bagel, and each bite was full of fresh and tasty ingredients. Coffee is delicious, we had an Iced Carmela, and it is tasty with notes of smoked caramel. The line goes out the door so you know it is good. read more

Went in quickly before a concert at Thalia Hall and ordered an Iced Mocha Latte. The guy behind the counter was very friendly and quickly took my order. He had finished making my drink in less than 2 minutes! The coffee itself was on the sweet side but that's a given since it's Mocha. I would probably go back to try just a standard latte if I'm ever in the area again but I'm not sure I'd go out of my way to come here specifically. Since I wasn't in there very long I can't say much but it's always nice to support local coffee shop businesses. I also really liked the interior because it made the place feel homey. Although, the stools near the window area were a bit uncomfortable to sit on. read more

We came here for just coffee so it's hard to review on anything else. It's conveniently located on 18th street with plenty of metered street parking. They were busy when we walked in with almost all the tables being full. They had a nice selection of pastries in the front, but we decided just to get some coffee. The entire staff was very friendly and fast workIng. We got our coffee in no time with some thank toys sand big smiles from the staff. I'm not sure if I would actually eat here, but getting some coffee..definitely. I ordered their choco espresso and it tasted phenomenal. Some Mexican chocolate with espresso definitely hit the spot. You get a hint of sweetness with strong flavored espresso. I'll definitely be returning in the very near future. read more

My go to order here is the salmon lox bagel and their white satin mocha coffee! I love stopping here for breakfast because their salmon lox bagel is one of the best that I've found so far in this city! For the price, the taste, the amount of smoked salmon and other fresh ingredients they pack onto the bagel, it can't be beat! read more

Cuban - the bread was toasted extremely well, but I could hardly taste the other ingredients. If I shaved off maybe a third of the bread, it would've been a great ratio. On top of that, it was very affordable. Golden Bean - tasty, but definitely for people with a sweet tooth. It's like a regular coffee with a crap ton of Torani flavoring. Reminds of coffee with Baileys, except even sweeter. I can see why people like it. The to-go cups are neat, and have mints attached to it. Very pleasant cafe, and I can see myself becoming a regular. read more

Ran in on a whim the other day. I ordered the Sunday Day Latte and a Matcha Latte for my co-worker, they were both excellent. As I waited I witnessed all the food getting prepared and everything looked fresh. Left me craving some of their items. So I came back and started with mollete and the breakfast bagel. Both were well worth it, all the ingredients were extremely fresh and they didn't break the bank. I'm definitely making this my coffee shop of choice when in Pilsen. read more

I stopped in for lunch and grabbed an iced dirty chai and a veggie focaccia sandwich. It's a small place, and looks like they typically have some counter seating and tables that have been rearranged due to COVID. There wasn't anywhere to eat in as of April 2022. The veggie focaccia was good and the side of pasta that comes with it was just average - noodles with some seasoning. It was a better option than packaged chips though. I will be back! read more

i've come to this coffee shop a handful of times over the past year. i love the interior and vibes inside. the drinks are yummy, especially the matcha. my go to sandwich is the lox bagel. today we ordered the lox bagel on an everything bagel and the turkey sandwich. it took over 20 minutes for our sandwich's. the shop is usually always busy because it's popular so a wait was expected. but i watched multiple orders be made while my bagel was sitting in the warmer. literally other bagels and breads were warmed and fell on top of mine and they were all made while mine sat there. the turkey sandwich was good. the crust of the bread was so toasted it felt like it was going to cut gums. the lox bagel was its usual yummy self. i will definitely return to this shop and hope to never experience such slow service again. read more

This happened a while ago, I'm sorry . . . (March '21) 1st off, I was greeted upon entering & offered help when I needed it. :) This is a cute little gem! Great menu, including sandwiches, pastries, & beverages that you can enjoy on the go! Cashier (Natalie) smiled & offered her suggestion on the food I was choosing from. I just moved from Chicago to Michigan, and one of the things I miss most is popping over to Pilsen on the regular to stop at Cafe Jumping Bean. Jorge and the rest of the crew are always friendly, and they keep things moving, even when the line stretches out the door (which is common because the place is awesome). They serve possibly the best cold-brewed coffee I've ever had. It's like drinking liquid cacao (and the large size is quite formidable...in a good way). Great way to set the tone for your morning. Not sure what they did with their drinks but they're different. The iced white satin mocha it taste like it has stevia now. The iced Carmella also no longer has a glob of caramel at the bottom and also taste weird. Almost as if they're using caramel syrup instead now. I'd rather pay an extra .50 cents to keep their drinks how they were. Hopefully they see this and go back to their original drinks otherwise I'd have to find a new place. read more

As Pilsen's first coffeehouse/gallery, it brings together a mix of local residents, workers, students, and the occasional tourists who come to enjoy coffee, good food, conversation and art. Café Jumping Bean's menu features soups, fresh specialty salads, gourmet sandwiches, a variety of pastries and a full-service espresso bar that offers customers both coffee and non-coffee specialties. It prides itself in providing a healthy menu of fresh food and drinks using the highest quality ingredients at affordable prices, while delivering exceptional customer service in a casual atmosphere. The Café also offers catering services throughout the local community. It's growing clientele and services have allowed it to remain a vital anchor to its community and local arts scene.

Meet the Business Owner: Eleazar D.

In 1994, hoping to fill the void for local gathering space in the Pilsen/Little Village neighborhood, Eleazar Delgado opened Café Jumping Bean, Inc. with the simple mission of providing a safe space in the community that offers both cultural arts enrichment, and good, healthy food and drinks. As a lifelong resident of the Pilsen/Little Village community, Eleazar realized his idea of a coffeehouse/gallery was far from typical of new businesses in the area. In fact, no such establishments existed at the time. He recognized however, the need for something different in terms of what neighborhood dining had to offer. And he also saw a potential market in the neighborhood's emerging arts community. Today, a decade later, Café Jumping Bean continues to thrive, serving over 200 customers daily, and bringing together a mix of local residents, workers, students, and the occasional tourists who come to enjoy coffee, good food, conversation and art. While waiting, we checked out the small coffee shop inside the gallery and browsed the furniture, which helped pass the time. Our wait was about an hour before being escorted to our table in the courtyard. Initially, we were placed at a low coffee table with couch seating. It's a cool lounge style setup, especially for drinks, but not ideal for a meal. It would have been pretty awkward trying to eat comfortably. We asked to be moved and were told that table preferences should be requested when joining the waitlist. Since it was my first time visiting, I wasn't aware of that, and it also wasn't asked by the hostess. Thankfully, they were able to accommodate us and moved us to a table in the wine cellar. The wine cellar had a completely different vibe, dark and moody, compared to the bright, airy courtyard with its beautiful glass ceiling and natural light. We ordered the lobster roll and the RH Burger, both with fries. The food came out fairly quickly and was well-presented. The lobster roll was served on a buttery brioche with just the right amount of seasoning, and the burger was juicy and flavorful. Overall, I had a great experience and would definitely visit again.

The cafe was very pretty with its ornate rugs and textured materials, and their menu was unique. I got the coconut shaken espresso and cottage cheese pancakes. Both items were delightful. The coconut shaken espresso used coconut water instead of milk, which was different but surprisingly smooth. It also wasn't thin or watered down as I would've expected by mixing with coconut water. The cottage cheese pancakes were pretty good. Fluffy, light, and not too sweet. It came with a sweet sauce with the slightest tang to it. Maybe also created by cottage cheese? Worth trying. Lastly, service was a bit slow. It took about 20 minutes for us to get our food.

For example, the matchy isn't earthy or chalky like some places or fake like the Starbucks one. The espresso isn't sour or burnt. And somehow when you combine both of them it's this perfect mellow blend but has the slight bitterness of both matcha/espresso where you're like "ah yes it's not just milk" that flavor really pulls through. But again it's mellow and blends together sooooo well like perfect mesh my goodness. Doesn't overpower doesn't feel like you're drinking matcha and coffee at the same time. It just becomes like a new thing altogether and that thing is glorious. The first time I got it iced (and the black camo latte hot) and all I could think about was how much better it would be hot.... So I had to come back for it !! And it ISSSS better hot. I enjoy hot lattes the hot milk and lack of ice is smoother and blends it together better or something. Obviously the iced version wasn't bad because I still had a great time... but when I came back for the second time and got it hot like YESSS THIS IS IT !!! Black camo latte ($7.25)-- same as Military but instead of matcha it's hojicha mixed with espresso! I took sips of this (as opposed to it being my own drink) and thought it was good! Really depends on if you like the taste of matcha or hojicha more. This one is deeper and richer, more earthy. Maybe even caramelized roast kinda flavor? Buuuut I know hojicha isn't for everyone so take it with a grain of salt. The combo with espresso is magical though like whatever ratio they're using is so perfect. It really blends together so well. ANDDDD here the coffee:milk ratio is so good!! No milky watered down lattes! I'm so used to having to add espresso shots or asking for less milk because coffee shops really be wildin in this economy but this place has a good ratio! Like yes wow we still have good things I love this for us. Matcha lemonade ($7)-- So absurdly sour I took one sip and that was enough for me!!! You really have to be a lemonade person like if that's your drink of choice to quench your thirst on a hot day then this is for you!! If you don't drink lemonade on the regular then I really wouldn't bother. I think this is a collab with a charity or something? Up your vitamin C for a good cause I guess. Cortado ($4.50)-- Espresso and milk, small cup, good test of their espresso and yesssss it passes with flying colors. And again, this place has their milk ratio down to a science. Perfectly balanced, not too much milk and you still taste all the coffee. Love love loveeeeee this place and would absolutely love an LA location. They were also very willing to adjust or remake a drink when needed, which I appreciated. Overall, it's a cute spot with great service, but I genuinely cannot accept the price-to-drink ratio. All the more better to savor all intricate dishes from start to finish. Like the name, The Purple Pig, their specialty is pork dishes so majority of our orders were this. Daily special of the bone marrow bacon jam toast - glazed, slippery off the bone, savory and sweet. Always love a good bone marrow dish to get the sweetness off it. This was so good that there were bits of the marrow and jam left stuck to the bone, I took a piece of the toast and scooped the bone dry. Nothing left for anyone to attack this. Non pork dishes were the Mushroom 3 ways and Spanish octopus. Mushroom dish was savory with all the coated sauces elevating this. Spanish octopus was kicked lightly and easily can bite in to enjoy the tender and charred portions. But the award went to my main course - the braised pork shoulder with saffron, apricots and Swiss chard. Aside from the rippable pork meat when dining on it, the sauces fused together on this dish elevated it and had everyone coming back for more. I needed an official Chicago culinary experience and found it at The Purple Pig without a doubt.

Every single part of the meal was outstanding. The pulled pork was delicious on its own, but I also loved the sweet barbecue sauce. The cornbread was, without exaggeration, the best I've ever had!! It was moist, flavorful, and served with absolutely incredible butter. The mac and cheese was rich, creamy, and one of the best I've ever had as well. Even the sweet tea was perfect: actually sweet without being overpowering or having that bitter, earthy aftertaste that some sweet teas have. I couldn't stop thinking about it, so I came back the next night and tried the brisket. It was sooooo good too. It was tender, smoky, juicy, and packed with flavor. At that point I knew the first meal wasn't a fluke. It's not inexpensive, but the portions are generous, and I felt the quality more than justified the price. I was there by myself because I'm traveling for work and actually enjoyed the communal tables. They made the atmosphere feel welcoming and a little less lonely than sitting by myself. The staff was excellent, too. The gentleman with the glasses at the meat counter was friendly, funny, and made the experience even more enjoyable. He even threw in a complimentary rib, which was such a nice surprise and a great example of the hospitality here. One thing to know before you go: the line can get long, but don't let that scare you away, it moves efficiently, and the food is absolutely worth the wait. Green Street Smoked Meats lived up to every bit of the hype. I may be impartial to this place because I've been a patron to this cafe since 2002. I keep going back because of the great service, the good food they serve (super garden salad fan here) is always delicious and they have really amazing coffee. Is it the best? I like to thank so. What to order....? If you're new - Try one of their focaccia sandwiches. As far as coffee - I'm a Cafe Breve fan - I'm there enough they know my order and know how I like it. But a regular cup of coffee is just as fine. Sit, talk, enjoy the energy and the community. One of my favorite places in the city! Is it large... no? Can it get crowed fast... yes! Is this ever a deterrent? Never! I travel all over the city on a daily basis, and always wonder if I have enough time to make it to the Cafe Jumping Bean. It's not your cafe with sofa kind of place but really... Sofas? That's gross! Can you use your laptop? Sure thing! Is there pressure to move - i've spent two hours there eating, talking and working - having short one-on-one meetings here. This place is local but not slow. People in the neighborhood work, they meet, they gather, they drink coffee..... all this happens at the the Jumping Bean. This is a great place to go! Ample street parking is available.....
