Liberal with Terminology. We hadn't been to Café Flora for a while, so were excited when their Fall seasonal menu was available. We really enjoyed our first experience: the staff was welcoming, and the food was flavorful and presented beautifully. Unfortunately, this will be the last time we will visit, as the service and food have dramatically declined since our first visit. We were off to a bad start once we walked in the door. Instead of receiving a warm welcome, the hostess walks up to the stand with a face as if we were bothering her; she was clearly annoyed and coldly asked, "How many?" I have never been greeted in such a manner at any establishment, nor have I ever greeted anyone in this manner when I worked restaurant hospitality. Did she graduate from the Cupcake Royale School of Hospitality? We were sat and ordered the Pumpkin Pancakes: spiced pumpkin pancakes with cinnamon crème fraiche, pomegranate seeds, and candied pepitas; and the Apple Cider Doughnut Belgian Waffle: apple cider Belgian waffle dusted with cinnamon and sugar, Collins Family Orchard apple compote, salted caramel, and spiced oat crumble. Sounds delicious! Unfortunately, the execution falls completely flat. Service was slow. Although our server took our order in a relatively timely manner, the kitchen was inexplicably slow in putting food out. The restaurant was not very busy, as the guests in the atrium section already had their food, and we were the first guests in the other section to order. There were five tables (including ours) by the time we received our food. We were the only table with our entrees. It took the kitchen over 25 minutes to produce pancakes and waffles on a Sunday brunch morning. The pancakes were thin and comically huge with a slight hint of pumpkin, no spice. Pancakes--good pancakes-- should be fluffy with a nice crisp edge; these were soggy. What was advertised as crème fraiche was at best, cinnamon butter. Crème fraiche is silky. What was placed atop the pancakes had the consistency of just scooped out of the refrigerator butter. The most flavorful aspect of the dish was the pomegranate seeds. We were equally disappointed with the waffle, as it didn't taste of apple or cinnamon. The compote was essentially apple sauce. In a compote, we can see the chunks of fruit in the glistening sauce. Dear reader, you can decide for yourself. When we think of caramel sauce, what we imagine is a thick, luxurious caramel; the "caramel" sauce was thinner than the cheapest of grocery store maple syrups. To add insult to injury, the waffle itself had a chemical taste. At least the chemicals gave the waffle flavor. Our experience was audaciously disappointing as the restaurant boasts its mission of sourcing from local farmers to inspire delicious vegetarian cuisine. Food tastes so much better with quality ingredients. There is no excuse for Café Flora's food to be bland if they are sourcing fresh produce from farms such as Alvarez Farms and Collins Family Orchards. The one thing that irritates me the most: paying for abysmal food that I can cook better at home. What we experienced was a team of people who did not want to be there on a Sunday morning. The service reflected it. The food reflected it. There are many other vegetarian/vegan restaurants which will provide more flavorful food, for those who are vegetarians, vegans, people transitioning into a plant-based diet, or people who are trying to eat a little healthier. Further east of the hustle and bustle of Capitol Hill, this restaurant is situated in a relatively peaceful neighborhood with many plant shops and nature, near Madison Park (fun fact: the 11 bus takes you directly to this restaurant - Eleven Madison Park, pun intended). What is special about this place is that the menu is vegetarian only with vegan options. The ambience is also pretty great and very green. We went here with coworkers and to ensure we accommodate vegetarian folks as a lot of places we went in the past have limited vegetarian options. Here, everything is all vegetarian, and they made each dish quite delicious! I personally got the Italian burger (black bean burger) and substituted the yam fries with the kale caesar salad, and added avocado on the topping. I have had very good burgers (the ones with beef), but I am amazed by how delicious a black bean burger can get! It is the preparation of the patty, the texture, and the general fresh quality ingredients that make this very enjoyable. The kale caesar salad is decent - more kale flavor than caesar salad flavor, but it was relatively light. Avocado add-on is a bit pricey but it is worthwhile to enhance the burger itself - I think there was only 1/4 of an avocado on one side of the burger. For the table, we got yam fries which I enjoyed - a bit sweet and served with aioli which is my favorite condiment for burgers and fries. It is also not too heavy, as they put just the right amount of salt and oil that would make it a "healthier" type of fries. I also got the sweet pea soda which tasted a bit savory, but it was quite sweet and floral. I personally wouldn't have tried this soda, but I felt a bit adventurous. Service is pretty good as all 8 of our dishes were delivered around the same time, and water refills were on pace. Overall, this place exceeded my expectations as not a lot of vegetarian restaurants can nail the execution of these dishes. I went to Cafe Flora with my friend who was visiting and this place was SOOO aesthetic and beautiful! We ordered the French dip sandwich and cinnamon roll. The French dip sandwich was a 9.5/10 - it was so flavorful when dipped in the "soup" and the fries and its condiments were flavorful as well. The cinnamon roll was a 8/10 - it was really flavorful as well and the maple toasted pecans was an amazing touch but they could have distributed the icing more evenly and it could have been served a little warmer / softer. Food is top notch at least that is something I can say about the Italian burger. I also tried their Mango Pannacota for dessert. I would say well I have had better before. It was a bit on the tangy side which might appeal to some. I really liked their sweet potato fries that came with burgers. Another cuisine that I recommend would be - Coconut Tofu Lettuce Wrap. I've been here many, many times over the past 15 years and the place always consistently delivers. First off, points for being trans owned and employing trans people. Second, the service is always polite and helpful. Vegan/vegetarian restaurants sometimes attract staff with a bit of a judgy flair which can be fun but not when you are bringing great aunt Linda who has never had tofu to dinner. This is a place where great aunt Linda will get all her questions answered. They are efficient with seating even though brunch doesn't take reservations. You will wait - which is impressive to have a place with a consistent wait after so many years - but you will get in. They won't skip over you. The food is absolutely consistent. High quality and a good mix of options. I will say it leans a bit towards old school and could use a bit of a fresh coat of paint in terms of layers and flavors - but you can't beat the classic. The staff were patient and friendly because we were indecisive in what we wanted but ended up choosing family style. Let's start off with the salad: we had this veganized (sans gorgonzola cheese) and it was an epic symphony of flavors: the roasted squash in combination with the refreshing greens, the juicy/crispy pears, and the crunchy/soft focaccia croutons worked so beautifully together. A very popular brunch spot! It was a 40 min wait for 2 people around 11am on a Sunday. Still the ambiance was pretty and it's quite a large area with two different dining rooms and an outdoor patio. The service was incredibly nice and our server was helpful with recommendations. I ended up with the potato and onion frittata with a side of potatoes. It was a good size serving but I do wish the potatoes were jazzed up more with seasoning. The frittata was tasty but a bit dry, still delicious with ketchup though! My friend and I split the coconut tofu lettuce wraps- which you have to get, they were one of the best things I've had. We also split the black bean burger and we added mozzarella and avocado. Splitting these two were the perfect size and I highly recommend getting the lettuce wraps and then one entree, it's enough food and the price is better sharing. We love Cafe Flora for a nicer brunch or dinner spot. I am vegan, gluten free, and allergic to peanuts, cashews and pistachios, and my partner is vegetarian. We have been probably 10 or so times and have never had any issues with getting cross contaminated or other issues, so I would consider this to be an allergy friendly place. They recently have changed the menu so there are less choices now for food, but the choices are still excellent with something for everyone. The servers are usually very nice and understanding of my allergies, and offer great suggestions when we can't decide between dishes. It is usually very cold inside the restaurant no matter the weather outside or what part of the restaurant we sit in, so every time we go we need a coat or go grab them from the car. My partner loved their Yakima valley polenta. I tried the fried trumpet mushroom and potato waffle, it was delicious and very savory with lots of textures and flavors. I did not realize when I ordered it that it is kind of like a chikn and waffle type of meal, so I was surprised when I saw it. But it turned out to be very good, if not a bit heavier and greasier than I had anticipated. Their drinks are amazing too, fresh and balanced. Full disclosure first: The wait is LONG, during the busy Saturday dinner hours. **LONG** We normally avoid busy times like a plague, but we happen to be in the area, so we waited. Doh. ~35 min to sit down (shorter than their estimated 40 min) which really isn't so bad; I don't mind this part. What surprised us was an additional 30 minutes for the food to show up after ordering. So total wait time was 1:05. A tad long even when I consider it's Saturday night. I just wish they were more forward about the wait time for the food. They also didn't pace the food to bring out our appetizer first. Rounding down all the stars. Other than that, our server was nice and shows up at the right times. We had a table under the tent outside, no issue. The food is excellent which I knew as I've eaten at Cafe Floret at the airport multiple times. A unique combination. French Dip and Yam Fries, $17 - 5 Stars Menu: Grilled portobello mushrooms, caramelized onions & swiss cheese on a seeded baguette served with garlic au jus This is one of my favorites from Cafe Floret in SeaTac. So I trusted it would be good here, too. It's simply prepared and perfect as is. Avocado Toast, $10 - 3.5 Stars Menu: Seeded baguette, mashed avocado, almonds, pickled beets, pistachio, nigella sesame drizzle The baguette doesn't seem to be toasted, which I would have preferred, but the outside of the baguette is still crunchy so I'm ok with that. It's loaded with avocado, but it's a bit "runny", so it's processed somehow, more than mashed. The avocado doesn't taste as avocado as a result, more like a mushy guacamole. Beautiful location, warm and inviting, definitely a place to bring a friend you want to impress. Cinnamon roll was amazing! Out of a few items on our visit (right at open) so a bit disappointed with that. Food (the asparagus scramble) was just okay, seemed to be lacking seasoning, but the hot sauce they provided was very flavor. The roasted potato's were delicious, nice and crispy. Real showstopper was the miso latte (iced) amazing flavors, not too overpowering with the miso flavor, perfectly balanced! Server was great! read more
