Also ordered pad se ew which is my go to when trying a new place. When my food arrived the crab cakes were like curried crab fried in a ball and they were tiny like hush puppies. My noodles tasted like water. Sauceless! This dish was for my kids so I called and spoke to "Alex" the manager ... just to let him know - and he told me it must have just been my personal preference and then hung up on me. So RUDE! Theres been quite a few restaurants in that spot since my time here in midtown, I'm hoping cafe de thai closes and allows some other business with better food and service to take their place and continue the awesome midtown vibe. I can't recommend this place. The food is not very good. We ordered through Grub Hub. We got the pad Thai, that Thai fried rice with pork, a cup of the Coconut chicken soup, and a cup of the chicken noodle soup. The pad Thai was bland. It seems to lack any fish or plum sauce based on its white color. The shrimp were minimal though tasty. The chicken was kind of dry. The Thai fried rice was a gooey mess with overcooked (minimal) vegetables. It had random chunks of bell peppers in it. Did not see them in the menu or in pictures. Due to a food allergy, this ruined the dish. The dish had a small portion of pork prices that were tasty. The rice itself had some flavor. The coconut soup had great flavor but also had chunks of bell pepper in it. The chicken noodle soup was terrible. The flavor was like dirt. The noodles and veggies were mushy. I normally absolutley love Thai food but I have been let down time and time again from here. I ordered a pad Thai with tofu and sticky mango rice and didn't open it until I got home. And was very disappointed! The pad Thai had chicken and shrimp and the colour seemed to be off. On top of this the rice for r the sticky mango rice was rock hard. It seemed like it had been microwaved and when I tried to cut into it the center was brown and burnt. Months later I was on Uber eats and accidentally ordered at the same place. Omg the fisherman's spring roll was so good, fresh sweet shrimp cooked perfectly, with real crab and three sauces, soy sauce, chili sweet and sour and peanut sauce, plus avocado, and tons of other nommy things jammed to the rice paper, my mom got the spring rolls and they are vegan and very nommy. The owners was really cool and explained what was vegan and vegetarian and really knew about food intolerances. I ordered the veggie peanut curry with amazingly cooked shrimp that had a nice caramelized sear and a rich peanut sauce, tons of veggies and yummy tofu severed over fresh spinach. My mom ordered the coconut chicken soup and it was lovely, like hints of lime with cilantro and then perfectly cooked white chicken breast, she loved it. The inside is chic and they have a cool water feature and a nice out door patio, they also know food service very well, the food came out in a timely matter and not all at once, I really appreciate this kinda of thing when going some where. I have been to Thailand more than 10 times in my life and been to numerous Thai restaurants but I don't think I've ever been to one that is this bad. It was very disappointing that they label their food "Thai." If you want to have their green curry, simply boil left over scraps of vegetables that are weeks old in the bottom of your fridge, add 4 thin strips of chicken breast meat and boil until tender then add 1Tbs of corn starch to thicken the liquid. First of all, I have to say that the remodel of Midtown is exactly what this growing town of ours needed. So many different, and unique restaurants, and bars. My husband and I were waiting for a show to start at the Saint bar and decided to check out that section of midtown since we haven't been down there since the remodel. As soon as we saw Cafe De Thai we knew we wanted to try it. We were quickly greeted and told they cater to ALL food allergies. Yes, all food allergies. The owner came to us and told us they cook on four different woks and we could even request to have them clean the wok beforehand. Having a child with food allergies this was exactly what I love to hear. They offer indoor and outdoor seating, and i will almost always choose to sit outdoor. I went here on a weekday for lunch, and tried their lunch buffet. Before I say anything more, the ambience was pretty good! The was neat and the owner was very courteous. So that's a real plus. He also checked if I had any dietary restriction so that they could suggest he right dishes for me. The buffet as such was good, not great though. They had reasonable variety and the taste was good. They had yellow curry, and around 5 chicken entree items. The price was roughly $14, which was worth it. The food could have been better though, I feel. read more

Wow! What a find! I do not understand why Cafe De Thai has 3.5 stars, as it is definitely one of the best Thai experiences I've had in Reno. First off, the service is phenomenal. At a restaurant, it's rare that the service is so good it's memorable, but this place defies this notion. Our server, Alex, was so personable, kind, and genuine; every time we conversed, it felt like we were becoming good friends. Truly one of the best servers I've ever encountered. For our appetizer, my friend and I ordered the FRESH SPRING ROLL special, which had sea bass in it. The dish came very promptly, and it was beautifully presented on a long, slender platter. The flavors were very light and fresh, just as spring rolls should be. Not the best I've ever had, but a solid start to our meal. For my main course, I ordered the VEGETARIAN PAD THAI, which had tofu. This was definitely the star of the meal. Both of us agreed that this was one of the best pad Thais we'd ever had. The noodles were perfectly cooked, and the flavors were stunning. It wasn't too sweet nor too salty, yet the tastes still popped. We loved the amount of crushed peanuts and fresh veggies, as they added a great dimension to the dish. I'll be dreaming about these noodles for a while... My friend ordered the GAENG PET (THAI CURRY) and it was delightful. It had a very pronounced squash/pumpkin taste to it that worked very well; it made it into a very comforting, warming dish. It's a perfect choice on a cold day. Although we were already stuffed, we couldn't resist the dessert cart. We chose the COCONUT CAKE. It was sooo rich and decadent, and although remarkable, one bite was enough, and we took the rest to-go. This dessert is definitely recommended, but it's probably best shared between a large group. Before you even walk into the restaurant, you are awed by the abstract architecture. Upon entering, you see rain streaming down from a skylight and exquisite small traditional Thai statues around the restaurant. The ambiance is quite lovely. But when you look closer at the details, you start to notice cracks in the facade. You bring the napkin to your face, and it smells off. The sink in the bathroom is defaced, and the towel dispenser doesn't work. Taking a look at the menu, the prices seem reasonable, but once the food is brought out, you realize why they are what they are. Lobster & filet mignon comes out, and you can't even find the lobster. It's covered in an icky black gooey material. The special of the day, a lamb shank, has little actual lamb meat. Two more plates arrive, and you realize that all the plates have the same stir-fried vegetables that are clearly not fresh and have been remixed over and over to dole out to diners. When you ask the waiter if rice comes with the food, she tells you it does, but when you look at your check, you see charges for the rice. The manager clears away the charges for the Jasmine rice but refuses to for the sticky rice because they had to steam and soak it. As a matter of fact, that sticky rice was terrible and mushy and definitely not worth the $3. For a restaurant as beautiful as this one, it deserves a chef who can create food that matches its splendor. Until it finds one, this restaurant only deserves 2 stars on account of the ambience. read more

Oh my goodness, this place is AMAZING. We just had one of the most delicious dinners here, and just had to leave a review right away. Everything was so tasty, and they make everything to order from scratch. Plus as a vegetarian, they can adjust almost all of the dishes to fit my dietary needs. Usually this place is great, I've ordered from them many time in the past and been blown away by how delicious and fresh the food is. Today everything I ordered was inedible. I can't even begin to describe how gross the Thai tea was, I could smell the spoiled milk before I even stirred it and saw the chunks *barf* then I hesitantly opened up the package of fresh rolls, which were an ungodly color and I can even describe the rotten smell. So bad, you guys. I did not eat any of the $50 order and am so bummed out, this used to be my favorite Thai restaurant and now I can't imagine ever eating there again :( read more

I usually don't write reviews but I had such a good experience here I had to. It was my first time here and I'm so glad I finally got to try it. I liked the decor and atmosphere, it was very clean. My friend and I got cocktails, spring roll appetizer, and pad Thai. Let me say that the cocktails were AMAZING, so yummy. It took everything in me to only get one since I had to drive home. The spring rolls were also super tasty. They tasted fresh and came with 3 sauces, all of them were delicious. The pad Thai was pretty underwhelming though. It wasn't bad, but I probably wouldn't order it again. However, my friend also got pad Thai and he loved it, so to each their own. I'm kinda picky with pad Thai, so maybe it's just me. We got the huckleberry ice cream for dessert and it was incredible. Some of the best ice cream I've ever had. The service was great. Everyone was very nice and attentive. At least a couple decades ago, my first taste of Thai food in Reno was at the original strip mall location of Cafe de Thai. As other Thai places opened, I moved on to a succession of new favorites and--for whatever reason--haven't been back. Cafe de Thai has since moved a couple times and had a change of both chefs and menu, so it seemed a good time to check out their new home in Midtown. My kids and I started with fisherman's spring rolls, one crab and one lobster ($11.50), each sliced into four pieces with a bit of chili sauce, cabbage slaw, and avocado, with sides of peanut, cilantro, and sweet & sour chili sauces. They were tightly wrapped, with nice crunchy veggies and fresh tasting seafood. Next, a set of four crispy corn fritters ($7.95), surrounded by garlic chili tamarind sauce and a bit of slaw. They had the appearance of a croquette, and the inner blend of red curry, lemongrass, and long bean was fairly unique. Good flavor, but the texture was like chewing through a cake of deep fried grass, with no sense of corn. Interesting, but not my favorite. The tubes and tentacles of chili crusted calamari ($9) were very tender, crispy, and great dipped in garlic chili sauce. About a third of the plate was filled with cabbage, lettuce, and sprouts; I would have preferred more squid. Crispy mushroom dumplings ($8 for 6) were filled with assorted mushroom, basil, and herbs, served with sour/spicy lemongrass sauce. They were absolutely great, with fungitude to spare. I couldn't wait to try their take on spicy beef and tripe salad ($10.50), served warm and tossed with mint, roasted rice powder, lime, chili, and scallion, served with slaw, tomato, romaine leaves, and garlic chili sauce. Though the flavors did not disappoint, there was a lot more side vegetation than meat, leaving us to lightly season each leaf with just a smattering of tender, spicy goodness. Roast duck curry ($15.59) did include a few bits of fowl simmered with red curry, coconut milk, tofu, broccoli, cabbage, celery, and tomato, but its presence was sparse amongst a sea of curry goo. Still, very tasty goo that I spooned over jasmine and brown rice. A single rice bowl came with the meal, but we were charged $2 each for bowls we didn't request. Basil vegetables ($9.95) in a spicy sauce with garlic and Thai chili was pretty much everything that came with the duck, sans duck. Quite good, and actually plentiful. Rad nar noodles ($12.95) with fresh noodles, stir-fried beef, and broccoli in a brown bean sauce was tender and delicious. However, fully half the plate was loaded with slaw and peanut, and I was again left wanting more of the actual entree. We were offered a choice of three desserts at $5.95 a piece: sticky rice with sliced mango, Thai tea cake, and coconut cake. We ordered the first two, though all three appeared with no charge for the coconut. I guess we can call it even on that extra rice. All three were great, the mango and sweetened rice particularly superb together. The Thai tea dessert was somewhere between cheesecake and firm custard, lightly sweet and fragrant. The coconut slice was an ample serving of moist layer cake, and though I really wish the portion ratios had been better, it was a delicious meal. read more

I have had Cafe De Thai in my Bookmarks list for quite some time. I wanted to go due to some reviews I read awhile back. Today was the day that I finally got to experience it! My rating is actually about a 4.5. I had read about their Po Pia Sot Takay or Fisherman's Spring Rolls and really wanted to try those. They are two spring rolls (one with crab and the other one with lobster)....right up my alley, for sure! Unfortunately, my waitress thinks that these are not gluten free, but she recommended the Calamari Spring Rolls instead. That is what I ordered along with a cup of Nam Kaeng Bpoo or Fresh Blue Crab Chowder. I thoroughly enjoyed both dishes. The Calamari Spring Rolls (which are not on the menu that I had) have a lot going on inside the rice paper wraps and came with three different sauces. I loved all of them, but do not know what they were other than the Sweet & Sour Chili Pepper. I believe that one was a peanut sauce, too. The Fresh Blue Crab Chowder was super tasty and smelled amazing! When it arrived at my table, it looked a bit messy, though. You can see what I mean in my picture. At first, I also was slightly bummed that the crab was broken down so small (thin shreds), but as I ate the chowder I discovered that it actually was wonderful that way, because every single bite had crab throughout. Knowing what I now know....I wouldn't change it. My waitress was really knowledgeable about gluten free and told me that about 75 percent of their menu is gluten free. It isn't marked on their menu, but she assured me that she could guide me as I ordered, if necessary, and she did. She was quite efficient, too. The chowder came out quite awhile after my spring rolls, but it was so good that I am overlooking that. I think it must just take longer to prepare or something. The restaurant is fresh, modern/industrial, as well as unique. A great mix. It appears that they also have outside seating (but it was definitely too cold today to explore that option). Their wall of water was a soothing touch, too. I did not have any dessert today, but evidently they have at least four gluten free options. I believe that they are some banana pudding, tapioca pudding, some kind of coconut flour cake (I think), and at least one more. My only irritation is the fact that none of their menus match (at the restaurant, on their website, on Yelp, and according to people's reviews of items they loved & I cannot find... they all have some major differences). It would be great to know all of what they really have available as I explore their menu further. What a rip off! I'm a business traveler who travels all over the U.S. and this is the first Thai restaurant that charges extra for rice that comes with your entree. The whole world knows Thai entrees are always served with rice. When I asked the owner, he replied 'we are an upscale restaurant and we cook our own rice.' That's a BS and what a Pathetic answer! I was so tempted to ask if they grow and harvest their own rice too? I looked around, The facility is mediocre. There are hanging wires and a few picture frames they have on the wall are cracked. I have several issues with this restaurant. Our meal was delivered in a timely manner which was the only plus. We ordered Pad Thai, Thai fried rice, crispy potato dumplings and some kind of tapioca for dessert. This was one of the most horrible meals we've ever ordered. The pad Thai was greasy and gray, with just a few pieces of leathery chicken and beef and rubbery shrimp. The Thai fried rice was also gray and watery. The potato dumpling's crust tasted like it was burned. We literally could not eat any of the food and dumped everything in the garbage. I then called the restaurant to let them know. But the "manager" said our problem would be with Uber, not them. She wasn't interested in how terrible the food was or that they might need a new cook, instead she kept insisting I talk to Uber. That didn't make sense to me but she said they had my money and not Cafe de Thai. I told her that on the restaurant's website it featured deliveries with Postmate and she said that was old, it would be Uber now. So we're stuck with a $60 bill for one of the worst meals we've ever paid for and no way to figure how to track anyone down who cares. Usually when you order a meal you get a confirmation from the restaurant or the delivery service, but we received neither. When it arrived the bag had no tag affixed saying where it came from, what was in it or how much we paid etc... It almost seems like a scam between a restaurant that doesn't take responsibility for how terrible their food is and an untraceable Uber delivery. It was an all around bad experience from terrible, terrible food (and a manager that didn't seem interested) to no way to track the Uber company or driver. Food was pretty good, although a bit on the pricey side, Strange piano and guitar Disney music playing. A little slow on the food, but overall pretty good. This place has a very open atmosphere, you can dress nice for a perfect dinner date or dress casually for a simple yet shiek lunch or dinner. They're food is delicious! Hot, fresh and filling. I haven't been able to give it a 5 star yet because my waiter hardly came over to ask if things were okay, or even to fill up my water glass. I had questions about the drink menu and I had no one to ask. The restaurant wasn't even busy...
