I was in Reno recently, and while I was walking by the river, I came across The Coconut Downtown. I'm so happy I did because this place was such a great find! This is a Thai restaurant, and when we got there they were getting ready to close, but thankfully we were still able to place an order to go. While we waited for our food, we grabbed a drink at the bar. We didn't have to wait too long at all, which was a big plus! We ordered the yellow chicken curry and the chicken Se Ew, and both were SO good! The yellow chicken curry had so much flavor and was absolutely delicious. The Se Ew was also really good and had such a great flavor. I was so happy with everything we got! The people working there were also super sweet and helpful, which made the experience even better. They have seating inside and outside, so it would definitely be a cute place to sit and enjoy your food. I'm already wanting to go back the next time I'm in Reno to try more things on their menu. I would definitely get the yellow chicken curry and Se Ew again because they were that good! If you're in the area, you should definitely go try this place. What a difference from the last time we ate at The Coconut. My wife and I were looking to have some Thai food. Several years ago we had a very good dinner here. This time around was a complete disaster. My wife and I were having Thai Basil Fried rice with varying exceptions. Tofu for my wife. Chicken and no onions for myself. The restaruant on a Sunday evening was pretty empty. Maybe 3 other parties were being served. We waited about 30 minutes for our meal. My wife's meal was ok at best. What I received was not what I ordered. My dish had zero Basil, overcooked Chicken , and no stringbeans . I was thoroughly discussed. I called the waitress over and told her I didn't like my dinner. She said would I like something else. I said angrily no. The waitress said the cook was new and made a mistake. The waitress said she took my meal off the bill. Several minutes later the cook ( not a chef in my book) asked me why I didn't like my dinner. I explained several items missing. He said the waitress put the wrong order in. Apparently both the waitress and the cook threw each other under the bus. It is unfortunate this establishment has gone way downhill. For us we recommend Thai Lotus but they were closed on Sundays. read more

First time at The Coconut Downtown. We arrived at 12:30 on a Saturday and it was 1/3 full. The Coconut appealed to us because our vegan daughter was with us. We each ordered individual plates. I got Tom Ka soup and Pad Thai with pork belly. My soup arrived in mins and lunch arrived eight mins later. The soup was a big disappointment. Instead of hot and sour, I got a mushroom soup with hot chili oil added. I ate about three small spoonfuls. My Pad Thai was really good. I enjoyed the tamarind kick and the heat level. The pork protein was adequate as well. I also tried my wife's Yellow Curry Chicken and it was very typical. Our daughter also enjoyed her meal. Really wanted to like this place because we've been searching for Vegas or Sacramento-quality Thai for 4 years here and the pictures of the food looked promising. Best Thai food place in town IMO. We keep going there every week! Love their Pad Thai, pineapple red curry, avocado cheese roll and mango sticky rice! Generous portion sizes, good taste and I love it here in winter overlooking the snow capped mountain. The ambiance is great! Coconut Downtown is one of my go-to lunch spots with coworkers. The lunch specials are a great value, and the menu has plenty of options. My must-orders are the avocado egg rolls, purple rice, and one of their curries. I usually order my food at a spice level 3, and while they generally do a good job, the heat level can vary from visit to visit. I've never had a bad meal here, but some dishes are absolutely fantastic while others are just good. When they're on, they're really on. When they're not, it's still a solid meal.. just not quite as memorable. Overall, it's a reliable downtown lunch spot that keeps me coming back! read more

We made reservations just to be safe since it was a theater night. We arrived and were the only ones there, but it quickly started to fill up. We order the fresh rolls with shrimp, yellow curry with chicken, pad Thai with shrimp, and praram chicken. Everything was delicious. The food came out hot and fairly quick. Everything seasoned perfectly. The restaurant itself was open and well lit surrounded by large windows. Tables weren't too close to each other so you had some room. Bathrooms were clean and bright. We visited the Coconut Thai restaurant in downtown Reno. The eggplant with chicken was good. The papaya salad was just okay--nothing spectacular--but the beef fried rice and fried chicken wings were fine; overall, it was a good experience. The cashier mentioned that the chef is her boyfriend--an American--which really surprised me; it is rare to find a non-Asian person with such a deep understanding of Asian cuisine. Why do some of you have pictures with the owners? It takes forever to get your food. You have to ask for napkins and silverware. I mean the food isn't really bad but it sure ain't 4.5 star. I wasn't sure the kind of restaurant this was when walking up. The former Wild Garlic location we have just never stopped until the other night. We now feel this is our go to location before the "show" at the Pioneer. We were a little later than planned but were able to enjoy a meal in plenty of time. Blown away by the flavors of the dishes we had we started comparing to our other "go-to's" and realized we want to try more here. So delicious, fresh, tasty. The Coconut is one of the best places to grab a bite or a drink before going to see a show at the Pioneer. While the restaurant might not look like anything special when you first walk in, what you will get is excellent service and delicious food. Unlike some of the other Thai restaurants in the midtown/downtown area where everything comes out overly salted and greasy, the food here tastes really clean. A few standout dishes include: Panang curry: clean, flavorful, and balanced; tastes great even if you go for a minimal spice level Pad Thai: you really taste the tamarind flavor in this dish. Khao Soi is my favorite Thai dish and The Coconut is one of my favorite restaurants that makes it. I order it with extra crispy noodles and they let you pick your spice level which is great since I can't handle too spicy. We were going to see a show at the Pioneer Center and we decided to try The Coconut for dinner beforehand. We're glad we did! Here's what we noticed: - We made a reservation for 5:30pm (prior to the 7:30 show). Making a reservation was a little tough because they don't offer the ability to make them online...I called up to make it, but when we arrived, it didn't seem like they had it. It didn't matter though because the place was very empty when we arrived and we got seated immediately. - The menu is really broad, and there's a bunch of specials, including a two dollar beer, which we really enjoyed! - My wife and I ordered the Red Curry with tofu and the Drunken Noodles with shrimp and shared both dishes. They were both excellent! The atmosphere in the restaurant is a little strange...Not very warm and comfy, but it works. - Service was very good. We made reservations for dinner before the ski movie at the Pioneer Center. Our table was waiting on us when we got there. I have been wanting to come here for a while so I was excited to see the Combo Appetizer where I could try several things. We liked everything but the fish cakes which were kind of funky and too spicy for me. We then shared the Praram Chicken which was absolutely delicious! The peanut sauce was very tasty and the steamed vegetables were cooked perfect. The food did not disappoint but the fact that they only had one server working the bar and front of the restaurant on a Saturday night made for some questionable reviews. Kao Soi; Curry Noodle with Chicken - HUGE hit for my wife, and she doesn't even like curry. She ate the whole bowl again! Still her favorite dish here. Boat Noodle Soup, Added Tilapia for $4 more - Decent portions. Not 100% sold on the flavor though. Chicken Pad See Ew - Surprised at the small quantity. Especially when the other dishes were more generous. A basic dish. Mango Sweet Sticky Rice with Coconut Ice Cream - This was a home run. Well the mango could have been riper, but we loved the sticky rice and the coconut ice cream. So many drink specials - $2 beers, $4 glasses of wine, lunch specials, etc. They also have other specials, see pictures. Atmosphere - Good size small local business. Well are you still small with 4 locations? Yes. All day $2 beers, see pictures. The beer was a good micro brewery and not inexpensive domestic beers. Table or bar seating. Also outside seating. Open 7 days a week from 11:30am or noon until 9pm. Street metered parking, come after 6pm and parking will be plenty and free. Today was Sunday, so free parking. Need a key for the bathroom, but it does not have interior/internal locks. I STRONGLY SUGGEST adding those locks so customers do NOT walk in on each other... Service - Good. One woman army, such a hard worker. Serviced all the tables almost by herself. Almost all of our visits here only had one waitress for ALL the tables here. Price - $87 + tip. We went in here seeking a light meal and dessert.. the service was good and the servers were great at refilling waters and getting the food out to us quickly but the food was another story... the onion rings were served cold, the fish cakes tasted like spam and the wontons were bland. Then we opted to try the sticky rice with coconut ice cream and that was also not very pleasing. The ice cream tasted like it had freezer burn and the mango sticky rice was not what we expected. Every time I am in Reno I make sure to make a stop here. The food is delicious, the vibes are immaculate, the music is always great and the service is wonderful. I am vegan and my partner is not but she is allergic to seafood. The servers always make sure to accommodate any and all of our food restrictions. The fresh roll with tofu was remarkable. Haven't tried tofu too many times but it's definitely on our menu in the future. The spring rolls were crisp and full of flavor. Then the fried rice. I can be judgy about this dish. Too dry or mushy and I'm out. The Coconut did it right. Just the right amount of oil, spices, veggies and rice made the day before and chilled so it doesn't mush up into a lump. Top ten of all time. The Coconut has great options for vegans and vegetarians. Everything is good quality and the thai tea is the best in Reno.

It's not too big and could use some more lighting. The service wasn't bad considering the cook was the one that took our order because the server was running late. He took our order and said he would get us water and then go cook the food. He said the server would be here soon to input orders. He ended up taking at least 4 orders and cooking them before the server showed up to basically just charge us. They must be understaffed. Been on my health kick again so I wanted to go out to eat, but didn't want anything unhealthy. I don't live near downtown but I remember The Coconut having and incredible eggplant dish and purple rice which is really good for you to lower blood sugar. This restaurant cooks vegetables to perfection! Cooked veggies but still crisp and flavorful. My husband and I really enjoyed our meal. I've ordered from here dozens of times sometimes more than once in a week. Can't get a bad dish. The waitstaff always has a ton of energy. My only gripe is that they refused my order on multiple occasions when I asked for the spiciest rating on my food. The service was excellent: very attentive, pleasant, and quick. The server made wonderful recommendations for us, which we appreciated. The ambiance is excellent: it's an open concept with plenty of windows and natural lighting. There's a large bar, and the tables are nicely spread out. This place is pretty good. Parking is a little hard since there isn't many spaces and it's all metered parking so you have to pay. The first time we tried this place it was take out of the pad Thai and it was just subpar. But then we decided to give it a try again and ate there and got the green avocado curry with chicken and the yellow avocado curry with chicken and both were very good! I wish they gave a little more rice but the curry was so good. It's a little pricey because they add half an avocado to the curry though. Definitely worth it for their wide array of great curry. Pros: Food was packed hot, and my food was quoted a pick-up time, and it was ready before said pick-up time. Fresh ingredients! Cons: Smaller portions and pricier than most local Thai restaurants. Metered parking next to the restaurant. I believe parking is free after 7 pm. The restaurant is located in downtown Reno. My curry didn't have any chicken in it, although I ordered it with chicken. It had overcooked eggplant in it, and the other veggies were mushy. Tip: Do check their business hours before heading there. They are open for lunch and then close for a while before dinner service. I learned that the hard way the last time I was in the area and craved Thai. Decent spacious dining room and a few tables. The girls were friendly when I picked up my takeout order. I would be willing to come in next time for the full experience. I would definitely have the papaya salad and the pad thai again. However, I would have to pass on the red pumpkin curry. I was not impressed with all mushy vegetables and absent chicken; I wouldn't recommend it either. I would like to try other items on their menu. read more

First time here! Coming from out of town. Out server, Cheetah, was so hospitable and informative! Truly so so nice! We had the fresh rolls, pineapple Curry, and khao soi. OMG LET ME TELL YOU THIS FOOD WAS SUPERB!!! The flavor explosion in your mouth! Both were creamy with right amount of spice! (You can pick your spice level 1 through 5 -we chose 1 because I don't like spice but I think I could've even handled a 2 or 3) I highly recommend the khao soi! I've never had that before, and it was my favorite item of the night. I also want to point out the other person working tonight was just as friendly. She apologized that one of our dishes took longer than the other, but we really weren't waiting more than 3 minutes after the first dish came out. I will definitely be back.
