The Coconut is one of the best places to grab a bite or a drink before going to see a show at the Pioneer. While the restaurant might not look like anything special when you first walk in, what you will get is excellent service and delicious food. Unlike some of the other Thai restaurants in the midtown/downtown area where everything comes out overly salted and greasy, the food here tastes really clean. A few standout dishes include: Panang curry: clean, flavorful, and balanced; tastes great even if you go for a minimal spice level Pad Thai: you really taste the tamarind flavor in this dish. We were going to see a show at the Pioneer Center and we decided to try The Coconut for dinner beforehand. We're glad we did! Here's what we noticed: - We made a reservation for 5:30pm (prior to the 7:30 show). Making a reservation was a little tough because they don't offer the ability to make them online...I called up to make it, but when we arrived, it didn't seem like they had it. It didn't matter though because the place was very empty when we arrived and we got seated immediately. - The menu is really broad, and there's a bunch of specials, including a two dollar beer, which we really enjoyed! - My wife and I ordered the Red Curry with tofu and the Drunken Noodles with shrimp and shared both dishes. They were both excellent! The atmosphere in the restaurant is a little strange...Not very warm and comfy, but it works. - Service was very good. Bottom line: The Coconut was just what we needed for a pre-theater dinner... And, you can't beat the location. We would definitely go back. read more

We made reservations for dinner before the ski movie at the Pioneer Center. Our table was waiting on us when we got there. I have been wanting to come here for a while so I was excited to see the Combo Appetizer where I could try several things. We liked everything but the fish cakes which were kind of funky and too spicy for me. We then shared the Praram Chicken which was absolutely delicious! The peanut sauce was very tasty and the steamed vegetables were cooked perfect. The food did not disappoint but the fact that they only had one server working the bar and front of the restaurant on a Saturday night made for some questionable reviews. Deven was trying very hard but an extra set of hands would have made the experience better. I loved the food and I will be back, thinking of ordering to go next time. read more

Boat Noodle Soup, Added Tilapia for $4 more - Decent portions. Not 100% sold on the flavor though. Chicken Pad See Ew - Surprised at the small quantity. Especially when the other dishes were more generous. A basic dish. Mango Sweet Sticky Rice with Coconut Ice Cream - This was a home run. Well the mango could have been riper, but we loved the sticky rice and the coconut ice cream. So many drink specials - $2 beers, $4 glasses of wine, lunch specials, etc. They also have other specials, see pictures. Atmosphere - Good size small local business. Well are you still small with 4 locations? Yes. All day $2 beers, see pictures. The beer was a good micro brewery and not inexpensive domestic beers. Table or bar seating. Also outside seating. Open 7 days a week from 11:30am or noon until 9pm. Street metered parking, come after 6pm and parking will be plenty and free. Today was Sunday, so free parking. Need a key for the bathroom, but it does not have interior/internal locks. I STRONGLY SUGGEST adding those locks so customers do NOT walk in on each other... Service - Good. One woman army, such a hard worker. Serviced all the tables almost by herself. Almost all of our visits here only had one waitress for ALL the tables here. Price - $87 + tip. I felt that this was inexpensive for what we got. We are now regular customers. Owner Comment - Congrats on your success since 2013 with your 6 locations. They don't play with spice is the one thing I remember from dining here. Thai tea was delicious and service was friendly. Good deal for lunch specials too, just too much spice for my weak, mortal tastebuds. Has lots of nice windows which provide a nice natural sunlight to the place. read more

We went in here seeking a light meal and dessert.. the service was good and the servers were great at refilling waters and getting the food out to us quickly but the food was another story... the onion rings were served cold, the fish cakes tasted like spam and the wontons were bland. Then we opted to try the sticky rice with coconut ice cream and that was also not very pleasing. The ice cream tasted like it had freezer burn and the mango sticky rice was not what we expected. If you're attending a show at the Pioneer Center may as well get reservations for the Coconut across the street. Go early so as to enjoy yourself. We tried a fresh roll, spring roll and fried rice. The fresh roll with tofu was remarkable. Haven't tried tofu too many times but it's definitely on our menu in the future. The spring rolls were crisp and full of flavor. Then the fried rice. I can be judgy about this dish. Too dry or mushy and I'm out. The Coconut did it right. Just the right amount of oil, spices, veggies and rice made the day before and chilled so it doesn't mush up into a lump. Top ten of all time. Been on my health kick again so I wanted to go out to eat, but didn't want anything unhealthy. I don't live near downtown but I remember The Coconut having and incredible eggplant dish and purple rice which is really good for you to lower blood sugar. This restaurant cooks vegetables to perfection! Cooked veggies but still crisp and flavorful. My husband and I really enjoyed our meal. The Coconut had advertised a wonderful lunch special for around $11, which is pretty much unheard of for this quality of food. read more

It's not too big and could use some more lighting. The service wasn't bad considering the cook was the one that took our order because the server was running late. He took our order and said he would get us water and then go cook the food. He said the server would be here soon to input orders. He ended up taking at least 4 orders and cooking them before the server showed up to basically just charge us. They must be understaffed. This is our first time trying this Thai restaurant. We went on Thursday after work, and it was not crowded; we were able to get a table quickly. The service was excellent: very attentive, pleasant, and quick. The server made wonderful recommendations for us, which we appreciated. The ambiance is excellent: it's an open concept with plenty of windows and natural lighting. There's a large bar, and the tables are nicely spread out. We mainly ordered noodle dishes, which were good. I would recommend getting chicken as a protein, as the beef was a little tough. Overall, the food we had was good. My prior experience was good (4/5) and I was excited to introduce a friend to this spot. Unfortunately, it appears the food is inconsistent. We ordered several dishes to sample the menu and experienced issues with each one. Food temperatures were inconsistent (chicken of varying temps, lukewarm vegetables), cream cheese rangoons were hot on the exterior but ice cold inside, and the wings were dry with limited flavor. I got the 3 on the spice level which provided a nice heat without blowing your head off. The staff were friendly and attentive and the food came out quickly. This place is pretty good. Parking is a little hard since there isn't many spaces and it's all metered parking so you have to pay. The first time we tried this place it was take out of the pad Thai and it was just subpar. But then we decided to give it a try again and ate there and got the green avocado curry with chicken and the yellow avocado curry with chicken and both were very good! I wish they gave a little more rice but the curry was so good. It's a little pricey because they add half an avocado to the curry though. Definitely worth it for their wide array of great curry. This is my second time visiting this spot. The first time I remember having awful service but decent food. The pad Thai I recall being quite good. This time the experience was the opposite. Food came not hot, and seemed like it was reheated by texture. We had attentive service but in a fairly empty and quiet restaurant I would expect fresher and better tasting food quality overall. First time here! Coming from out of town. Out server, Cheetah, was so hospitable and informative! Truly so so nice! We had the fresh rolls, pineapple Curry, and khao soi. OMG LET ME TELL YOU THIS FOOD WAS SUPERB!!! The flavor explosion in your mouth! Both were creamy with right amount of spice! (You can pick your spice level 1 through 5 -we chose 1 because I don't like spice but I think I could've even handled a 2 or 3) I highly recommend the khao soi! I've never had that before, and it was my favorite item of the night. I also want to point out the other person working tonight was just as friendly. She apologized that one of our dishes took longer than the other, but we really weren't waiting more than 3 minutes after the first dish came out. I will definitely be back. First time in reno, visiting from orange county CA. Our first stop was here , i saw on yelp pictures looked great and the food definitely lived up to the photos. I was nervous at first , but it was really authentic . Our entire group was impressed , its better than ALL of our thai spots we have here back home. Portions are good size. Great food, nice ambience, good service. We started with the papaya salad. More green papaya in the dish would be good, but the flavor was delicious. I had the pineapple red curry with tofu and my partner had the Praram chicken and vegetables with peanut sauce. The dishes were substantial enough to bring some home. Pros: Food was packed hot, and my food was quoted a pick-up time, and it was ready before said pick-up time. Fresh ingredients! Cons: Smaller portions and pricier than most local Thai restaurants. Metered parking next to the restaurant. I believe parking is free after 7 pm. The restaurant is located in downtown Reno. My curry didn't have any chicken in it, although I ordered it with chicken. It had overcooked eggplant in it, and the other veggies were mushy. Tip: Do check their business hours before heading there. They are open for lunch and then close for a while before dinner service. I learned that the hard way the last time I was in the area and craved Thai. Decent spacious dining room and a few tables. The girls were friendly when I picked up my takeout order. I would be willing to come in next time for the full experience. I would definitely have the papaya salad and the pad thai again. However, I would have to pass on the red pumpkin curry. I was not impressed with all mushy vegetables and absent chicken; I wouldn't recommend it either. I would like to try other items on their menu. read more

I ordered take out because I was in the area and hungry but not enough time to sit and eat. Pad Thai with chicken spicy 3 out of 5. It was the perfect level of spicy! It was piping hot and easy pick up. The inner dining area is small and so you might have to wait if it's too cold for outside dining. It was good pad Thai but not the best I've had in town. When there's a performance at the nearby Pioneer Center, our practice has been to dine at the La Famiglia Ristorante before an evening performance and have Lunch at The Coconut Downtown before a Matinee. Gayle and I did the later before attending a most excellent performance of Mrs. Doubtfire yesterday afternoon. There are other Downtown choices, but with the Pioneer Center in visual site (and steps away in case of a rush), call us creatures of habit. Due to the Downtown Pride celebrations, the Coconut was was busy, with all bar and table seats taken except 2. We were seated at that table within this comfortable and casual dining room. Our server was pleasant and efficient, with beer, wine, and our food choices all coming out relatively quickly. I ordered That Praram Chicken, while Gayle had some sort of shrimp salad. We ate everything, altough I thought my dish was a little bland, while Gayle thought that the shrimp portion was tasty and generous, but definitely a bit too saucy. We'll be here again, but we'll probably go for one of our Curry or Pad Thai stand byes. read more

The Drunken Noodles didn't have much flavor and didn't use the usual wide noodles. In reality this was more like a 2 star and not a 3. We came with friends here a couple days ago. It had been awhile since we last ate here and our friends had never been so we looked forward to a fun evening with good food. Our friends knew that The Coconut failed their health inspection in October, which was news to us, but we thought there is no better time to try it again thinking they would be on top of their game. We were seated right away and the guys tried ordering a couple beers listed on their menu. They were out of their first and second choices. They finally found canned IPAs that they had in stock and were happy with those. The ladies ordered glasses of white wine -- in stock! When our server came back for our food order, my friend asked for fresh spring rolls to share and guess what? They were out of them. But we ended up getting everything we wanted for our mains (I love their Avocado Green Curry so ordered that with tofu). My husband had their Pineapple Fried Rice with shrimp. We both shared our dishes -- I was not a fan of the raisins in his fried rice but it was ok otherwise. Our friends seemed to enjoy their entrees and we ended up having a nice time. read more
