Love stopping into locally-owned mom and pop shops. The service here is fast & friendly. Menu selection is huge which is typical for an Asian restaurant. Won ton soup - lots of fresh, brightly colored vegetables and won tons. But the broth lacked flavor. Fixed it up with some chili oil and soy sauce. Dim sum / potstickers - hard to find in Reno and this does not answer the call. The shu mai & bbq buns taste store bought. I can do better at home. Chicken fried rice - lacks flavor. Craving some Dim Sum? This is a great spot to snag some. Yes they sell doughnuts, but that's not why you go. You go for the pho and dim sum. The shrimp & pork shu mai and the shrimp dumplings were delicious! Dense, soft and flavorful! Don't forget to add the chili oil! The pork buns had good flavor, but I prefer a higher filling to bun ratio. Overall, this is a good spot to check out. Reno makes it hard to find good dim sum at an affordable price but this a decent spot. I was in town and was in the mood for Pho. Found this place on Yelp, setup my GPS, and went on my way. When I arrived and entered the parking lot, I ended up driving around because I couldn't find the restaurant. Turned out that the Donut Bistro and Pho Noodle are in the same location and that's why I couldn't find it originally. I was seated quickly and I placed my order. It took some time for my Pho to come out even though I was the only person seated without my food. When my food came, the broth was not hot, and the flavors were a bit off. Would I go back? Yikes, not what I'd anticipated and sad to say I was pretty disappointed. Service, I will say, was very nice. Our waitress was just wonderful. That's where all the good times ended. My "grand doll" and I are apparently bent on sampling every pho restaurant we can find, so when she called to ask me to lunch I said sure where? There was a pause and I said "is it 3 letters and start with a P? Uh, yeah, snicker, was her answer. I had seen a pretty impressive rating here at Pho Noodle so I felt excited and confident that this would be well received. She ordered the very same pho she always orders, chicken Pho. I'm low carb~ing it so I decided rather than deconstruct a bowl of pho, I'd order Hot and Sour soup. I mean, it's def the season for that. My soup came first with quite a pause before the chicken pho came which I never love. I sat there staring at my soup and chatting wishing the pho would appear so we could eat together but finally decided to take a sip. As I had been looking at the bowl of soup I had quietly thought it didn't seem very hot. I had all sorts of observations prior to my first sip and unfortunately I was spot on. The soup was luke warm, looked like a bowl of glistening gelatinous cornstarched soup base and tasted nothing like hot and dour soup. It's been a long time since I've been this gobsmacked by a dish served to me at a restaurant. I actually took two sips of this dish and actually felt helplessly at a loss and desperate. I know, dramatic... My Grandoll asked me what was wrong and I said, hating for her to see me complain, that the soup just tasted very weird. I asked her if she wanted to taste and she did. Her response was in total agreement with me. Still not wanting to be a pill in a restaurant, I told her that I'd just ask for a to go container and then dispose of it once we left the restaurant. Her pho finally came and I took one look at it and said rut row... We are broth snobs, which shouldn't be a hard road to travel and both agreed right away that this wasn't going to be a fan fave. The broth was as clear as tap water and she gave the first critique. I tasted and immediately tasted salty bouillon base. It's the first Pho establishment we've been to that she didn't eat the whole bowl. The set up for the pho was also sparse and sad. I decided at this point that I shouldn't have to pay for my hot and sour soul that was, to my palate, inedible so when our waitress passed our table and eyeballed my full bowl of hot and sour soup I gently moved the bowl to the edge of the table. She then came back and asked if everything was okay. I politely told her there was something off with the soup and I just could not eat it. She remained incredibly polite and took that item off the bill. We paid for one pho and a Thai tea with a nice tip. However, one and done. read more

I've been back a bunch of times now and discovered a couple of my fave dishes the way they fix then here. The usual server is so friendly compared to some Asian restaurants. I tried the beef chow fun rice noodle dish with black bean sauce. This is different then the standard chow fun dry style. This has like a sauce poured over the noodles and beef. They sure don't skimp on the beef here either. The noodles are super tender, so I know they use fresh rice noodles, rather than the dried noodles a lot of places use. It's like the difference between dried grocery store pasta and fresh made pasta. The other dish they do really well here, is the Singapore Noodles. A lot of places have this dish, but here at Pho Noodles aka. Donut Bistro, the cook knows how to balance all the flavors together, so the curry isn't too strong, or too weak. The shrimp in this dish are cooked perfect, not over cooked rubbery at all. I'm glad this restaurant is so convenient here in South Reno. Food is served at 10am, but lunch specials not till 11am. Donuts are always a bonus too! read more

Pretty bummed about this one. I don't usually eat lunch during the work week but as I have been fighting some sinus stuff, I thought I'd treat myself to some piping hot Pho. This place is about 2 mins from my workplace so I thought I was in luck. I was immediately sat in a corner and brought Jasmine tea, the place was clean and lit with natural light. I order #9 which has chicken, rice noodles, in a chicken broth. I have never ordered a chicken broth based pho before so maybe it's the norm but I was really sad to not be given basil for my pho, like I'd usually get. The chicken had to be boiled because it was rubbery and white as a snowflake. Sadly, this Pho left a lot to be desired and I had to add copious amounts of soy sauce and sriracha just to have some minimal flavor. While it was piping hot and all the sriracha I added helped clear my sinuses, I was disappointed. The waitress was very nice and attentive but the food just wasn't good. There are so many great Pho options in Reno, I don't think I would come back here, despite it being so close to work. read more

My friend suggested to go to get the lemon chicken...she told me it was the old school (probably not at all authentic" bright yellow lemon chicken we grew up with. I ordered the lemon chicken, chicken chow mein and cream cheese wontons. I literally can't explain how delicious it was! The staff was so friendly when I called, was ready quickly and were so nice when I picked up. The prices are reasonable and they are not skimpy with the portions. We go here frequently. Great food and variety. It has a homey atmosphere. Both the Vietnamese and Chinese foods are excellent with lots of fresh vegetables and regional spices. As a Vietnamese foodie I'm partial to the regional qualities and the cook who is regional is excellent and adds her touch. The simple atmosphere reminds me of eating in Viet Nam (ok without the noise and the exhaust fumes). Reno has several good Vietnamese restaurants but this is by far the most authentic. The donuts, well it is more like Viet Nam to have several family businesses in the same spot--these two are at least both outstanding food. Try it, it is delicious, friendly, and clean!! I've been here a few times. Every time it's been a pretty good meal. I always get one of their boba drinks which are great as they are made with fresh fruit. Today I just got pork buns which were pretty good along with a cantaloupe boba. The service is always good. The dining area has both booths and tables. The pho dac beit is the way to go. The broth smelled inviting the noodles didn't fall apart (the stringy onions were my favorite part) yummy. The music is relaxing, it's a very small venue and it gets busy . Please be patient, I believe it's a mom and pop shop just the two of them . Family owned and very friendly, I appreciated that prices here are less than other similar restaurants the area. The menu has a lot to offer and I will need to return several times to try each one of them. I walked in to order take out and waited 15 minutes. Stopped by for a Sunday afternoon lunch. Fairly easy to get there, off of South Meadows Parkway and the freeway, sharing the location with the donut shop (interesting combo). I amused myself watching all of the lunch patrons by dozens of donuts to take home as they were paying for their meals at the counter. I had the Vietnamese cold rice noodles with fried tofu and the tofu was really good. The sauce for the noodles was kind of bland compared to other Vietnamese restaurants I had visited. Loved the Vietnamese coffee boba drink. Service was good, place was fairly clean. The bathroom floor was kind of dirty. Good, inexpensive food. Great for take out I suppose. Not sure If I'd make it top of the list with other great Asian restaurants in the Reno area. read more

I had to update this review, my previous one was from 2012. 2020 Update: I just happened to be at Wells Fargo and decided to give this place a try. I think they missed out on a golden opportunity by not calling this place Pho-nut Bistro. I ordered the lunch special ($7.95) and crossed my fingers. I ordered the Kung Pao Beef (only a few places that i have seen serve this) and the special came with crab rangoon (x2), fried rice and egg drop soup.OMG! For this price, i felt like i had a deal! Massive amounts of food, and it was tasty! The Kung Pao Beef was spicy and excellent, the nuts were fresh and just the right amount of onions, carrots and peppers. The fried rice was not premade, i believe it was made to order and it was great! Seriously tired of food thats been sitting out for hours waiting for a microwave. The crab rangoon were actually made to look like little crabs, almost elegant! An elegant crab rangoon???? The cream inside the crab rangoon was delicious as well. The egg drop soup was ok, im not really a fan but it comes with your special. It was ok, very fresh and the veggies they had in the soup were not soggy. Weekday takeout-- Snow day means soupy weather! That's the rule. I didn't make it up. Decided to give Pho Noodle/Donut Bistro a try since I was in the area. It was pretty snowy in the lot, but plenty of parking. The restaurant itself gives a "hole in the wall" vibe (small and not very clean) so I ordered takeout. I was craving Bun Bo Hue but saw that they also had some dimsum so I ordered a couple items along with my noodle soup. It took maybe 15 minutes for them to prepare my order. The dimsum was definitely basic frozen dimsum they just steamed and NOT worth the $$ they charge (~$11 for 10 pieces of pork&shrimp dumplings/siumai and $10 for 10 shrimp dumplings/hagow) My Bun Bo Hue was just okay. It came with regular pho noodles when I'm used to it coming with the round rice noodles, but the broth was good and it came with a decent amount of meat, so I've had worse lol. The place is also mix, a donut shop and a pho noddle place. Strange combo but it must work for them. Food Drink - Just water. Lunch - The #4, large, a big bowl of beef broth with some beef flank and rice noodles. The whole meal was bland. It could have used more beef and noodles. Roughly eight dollars, not too bad then. Service - I walked in the door where the register is, two people were waiting so I grabbed a paper menu. The lady behind the counter asked if I was eating in or to go. I said in and she escorted me to a table. After a few minutes she came back and took my order. The food came out quickly. After I finished I just walked up to the register to pay. During my meal another employee said something to the man at the table next to me and grabbed a bunch of spoons to take to another table. I just thought that was strange and rude. Pho Noodle is definitely unique...they're a Pho Restaurant with "American" Chinese food and donuts in the front!! Seeing as how I work right next door in the mornings...the donuts are hard to beat! And they're actually very good! $6 for six donuts... When the girls and I are having a rough day, a pack of chocolate donuts is our go-to, a quick fix. Then there is lunch. They offer a 7.25$ lunch special which included your choice of an entree, fried rice, two cream cheese wontons, and either egg drop soup or hot and sour. I opted for Kung Pao Shrimp, and egg drop soup. The shrimp was easily the best Kung Pao shrimp I've had. Not to spicy, big shrimp and whole peanuts with the veggies were so good! The rice wasn't greasy or over cooked, the wontons were a filler but pretty tasty anyway, and the soup was awesome!! I'd have to say from the reviews on their Pho that maybe they have an identity crisis...they're a quirky donut shop turning out great American style Chinese food trying to stay with the times by offering Pho? I love this place. I come once a week and always get the number 14 and pot stickers. The pot stickers I get fried. They are crispy on one side and chewy on the other. I really like it. The dipping sauce they come with is great, and I always add siracha which makes it even better. The 14 is Vietnamese noodles topped with pork, bean sprouts lettuce and cucumber. I always pick off half the lettuce abd bean sprouts because I'm not a fan. It comes with this light colored sauce that I pour over the whole thing. The sauce really makes the dish. Its topped with an egg roll. The egg roll is crispy and different from regular egg roles. Still good though. The service is prompt, but today when I came in they were busy and it took the food longer to come out. The staff is always friendly. I have only tried the 14 beacause I fell in love with it. I had the beef with green peppers,shrimp fried rice, cream cheese wontons and a dount all full orders i think it came to $21 or $22 i ate on it for 3 days! Large portions..Clean .. and friendly. I have lived up the street for years but never thought to stop in for a bite to eat. The shop feels more like a sandwich shop, but it's clean and large enough for a group. I ordered to-go, so I can't remark on the service. I ordered a classic boba and a war won ton soup.... and color me impressed! The soup was delightful, lots of meat and veggies in a light broth. So, the Donut Bistro serves Asian food in addition to a standard line-up of American fried dough items. Can good pho & doughnuts co-exist? The answer is still unknown to me, because the pho at this place is possibly the worst I've had in Reno. The broth had none of the yummy flavors present in a good bowl of Pho Dac Biet, and the aroma was less than appetizing. Think bland dishwater. Still, I'm keen to try most things, so after sipping the broth as-is, I doctored the anemic bowl with hoisin, soy, sriracha, etc. and dove in. Very little meat was included, and what was present had little to no flavor. The most plentiful item other than noodles was the quartered meat balls, which were gumball chewy. Seriously, I've had overcooked squid that was easier to chew. In an effort to give these folks a proper evaluation, I thought I'd try the spring rolls in addition to that sad bowl of disappointment. The rolls were actually fine, if not amazing, but the peanut sauce was ICK. A good peanut sauce for spring rolls is usually served either warmed up (just shy of hot) or at room temperature, but this joint served it up ICE cold. Plus, it was clearly just peanut butter that had been thinned out with who knows what, and there was absolutely no other flavor than Creamy Jif going on. The one positive thing I can say is the service was very prompt and friendly. The service was so good, it makes me really sad to give them a negative review. But honestly, I wouldn't eat here again even if it was free. The menu includes a bunch of typical Chinese-American fare, but I won't be back to find out what it's like. I thought about trying a doughnut on my way out, but frankly, my appetite had already been slaughtered by lunch. One can only hope the baked goods at the Donut Bistro/Pho Noodle are better than the pho. Eat here only if every other pho place closes and you've been the victim of a freak accident that rendered your sense of taste and smell non-functional. read more

My boyfriend and I were shopping for decor furnitures and got hungry and came to this pho place and first impression was: it's a small compact restaurant. We both ordered a number one large pho bowl because we thought the large is like every pho restaurants: big bowl of soup with little noodles and beef. When our food came out, the bowl was true to size. There were more noodles and beef in the bowl compared to any other pho restaurants we've been to (includes golden flower, asian noodle, etc.) and the soup flavor was okay. While we were eating, a customer right next to our table had a complaint. He supposedly found something in his com thit nuong. He didn't have to pay for his meal. His complaint made us aware of what can possibly be in our food. So we were eating and then my boyfriend found a blotch-like thing with a whole bunch of black hair on it.
