I was surprised to see the variety of Peruvian foods they offered and was not disappointed with my spur of the moment meal. The ceviche was super fresh, with great balance of sweet mango and spicy pico. Just the way it is supposed to be. The chincha was deliciously topped with cinnamon - yummy. And the drunken goat was comfort food at its best. Slow cooked, tender pieces of meat with small bites of potato, corn, peas and spinach. We tried the vegan lomo saltado and sweet potato noodles. Each dish had potential but we did not enjoy the food as expected. The lomo saltado rice was undercooked, fries were stale and reheated and it was extremely sweet. Definitely not what I'm use to when eating lomo saltado. My husbands dish lacked flavor and tasted like "jelly" noodles. I'm giving it 3 stars because the ambiance was AWESOME and our server was so sweet. Very cool eclectic spot - made a rez via Yelp and was given a nice private wooden booth which included stained glass walls & ceiling panels - the menu is about 95% gluten-free, which was amazing - they actually mark the items that aren't gluten free because there are so few of them - I had a pesto dish with gluten-free risotto, walnuts, Peruvian pepper & cheese, etc - the wine list is short but nice & everything seems to have been intentionally selected to pair with the food served - we specifically didn't finish our entrees so that we could try the gluten-free chocolate cake which included coffee, cocoa nibs, whipped cream and cinnamon - it was fantastic! - if you are running early, there are a lot of cool shops to visit in the blocks near the restaurant read more

Had the Wings al Brasa for a starter. Perfectly grilled and the flavor was fantastic. The Iced Cafe Cusco was a little too sweet for me, but it was objectively a good cocktail. For my entree I had the Jungle Fruit Nut Salad and it was good. Once I sprinkled it with a little of their house made hot sauce to add just a little more acid, it was perfect! This is a great restaurant. Would recommend it to anyone who likes big bold flavors and a festive atmosphere, or drinking on the dog friendly patio. Honesty worst experience, didn't take the lady 5 min to be a complete ass. Walked in, greeted her and asked if we could have the end booth. She said it wasn't available so we were like okay that's cool, how about that middle booth? The lady walked us to the booth and THREW the menus down and said she'll go get us water. Cafe Cusco is a "destination restaurant" on historic Commercial Street. It happens to be in my back yard, so I have walked to there many times. My favorites are he chicken wings and the shrimp ceviche. A hidden gem is their house-made hot sauce, which they bottle and will sell to you. I always have the sauce at my house, and I put that sht on everything! It is lovely to sit on their patio in late afternoon/evening hours because the patio is on the east side out of the sun. Definitely have a sangria and a patio snack if you're in the area. You will not be disappointed. read more

Cafe Cusco was very hyped up on Yelp, and for good reason. This place is a one of a kind in Springfield. The atmosphere is quaint and cultural. I felt like I was in Peru / Indian. Personally, I wouldn't recommend the sweet potato stir fry. It didn't taste anything like sweet potato. The noodles were chewy and honestly, I didn't like them. However, the chicken was delicious. I also recommend asking for their house hot sauce. Very good. My girlfriend for the blackfish. I don't like fish but she is a huge fish lover and loved it. The tres leches was amazing. I highly recommend trying it when you come here. Overall, a great visit and I will definitely be returning to try some new things! read more

I have been to Cafe Cusco, with my daughter, a number of times. We live in Clever but the food is well worth the trip. Each time we were happy with our choice of restaurant. Cafe Cusco is a great fit in the Springfield area and stands out in my mind because of their aromatic, flavorful foods. I, more so than my daughter, crave food with spice at least four times a week and Cafe Cusco always pleases.The tantalizing flavors add just the right amount of zest to enhance the food and not overpower it. We enjoyed their Chicken Para Rayos... Grilled chicken breast smothered with creamy yellow pepper sauce, with sauteed shrimp, tomato and spinach over a bed of garlic rice with pineapple. For dessert we split because there was plenty for two, Torta de Askinosie... Rich Gluten-free chocolate cake soaked with coffee and topped with Askinosie caramel fudge frosting, whip cream cinnamon and cocoa nibs. The service each time has been superb and was especially good last night, Giovahna, was the polite sever. read more

What a delicious and delightful find! The food here is absolutely delicious and fresh. We ordered the Miami Ceviche and the Spicy Pork Nachos for starters since we were starving! They were both very good. We then split the dried rabbit entree, which was amazing. I have to be gluten free and there were so many options on the menu for me to choose from. They even had a gluten free chocolate cake which was great. The waitress was very knowledgeable and helpful as well as friendly. We will be Bach the next time we are in Springfield. Any place that offers a very extensive Vegan menu is going to get a high rating from me! I'm not vegan, but my boyfriend is and finding a place that can feed us both (and isn't Mexican) is difficult. We went back on our one year anniversary and they reserved the same booth we sat in for us, even during their busy lunch rush. We happened upon this restaurant when we came into Springfield and were very happy we did. The food was amazing, the waitress was very friendly and the drinks were amazing. We shared the Tequenos appetizer and the Chicken Para Rayos since we were traveling and could not take leftovers with us. There was plenty of food for two people and absolutely delicious. We also had sangria and a Southern Comfort Amaretto pineapple juice cocktail that was fantastic. If we are ever traveling through Springfield again, we will definitely stop in again. I don't think I've had a dish here that was just ok. Pretty much everything is gluten free or can be made gf. Fajitas are amazing, any protein here is great, but I recommend the chicken! Their house-made hot sauce is the best I've ever had, I keep it stocked to spruce up my own cooking. Great food and a classy Old Town Springfield feel. Got lucky a couple years back picking the Peruvian on a dare as we drove through Tulsa. Found a real treasure. Took a gamble again on Christmas Eve when our favorite Mexican was closed. Glad we did. Call ahead and reserve a booth. They look wonderful. We had the puca picante, ceviche, pesto noodles and a smattering of teas and deserts. All was delicious. Grateful for the "Loco Roco" hot sauce on the table. The puca picante was flavorfully spiced for the lightweights but the table sauce was colorful and brought the burn for the rest of us. Loved the Lucuma Cheesecake. Iced yerba was great go-juice. My wife and I were in town for a weekend getaway. We saw Cafe Cusco online and decided to go for lunch. We always enjoy trying new types of food. First of all, we were very impressed with the decor. The wooden booths and "stained glass" look were something else. The exposed original brick walls added to the atmosphere. My wife had the lunch Chicken Ocopa and I had the Aji de Gallina. Both were excellent and good sized portion for the price. My wife actually had to ask for a takeout box, because she couldn't eat it all. Neither were overly spicy but had an excellent blend of unique spices. The yellow pepper sauce of the Aji de Gallina was different than anything I had ever tasted but I truly enjoyed it. Later that evening as we were searching all over the internet and in guidebooks for a place to eat dinner, we decided to go back to Cafe Cusco. Nothing else we saw looked as good for the price and there were several items on the menu that had piqued our interest. This time my wife had the Spicy Pasta Rocoto and I had the Puca Picante. Again both were excellent. This time we both had to ask for takeout boxes. The Puca Picante was a little sweeter than I expected but was a very interesting mix of flavors. If we travel to Springfield again we definitely want to go and try some of the other dishes on the menu. The Torta de Askinosie is excellent and made with chocolate from the Askinosie Chocolate Factory just down the street. Check it out too!! UPDATE: I'm chalking up my initial reaction to the unpredictable vagaries of the restaurant business. Each meal since has been a joy rivaled only by the atmosphere, which I rightly praised during my first review and continue to enthusiastically endorse. Most recently, I enjoyed a simple but delicious steak salad marked by a near-flawless balance of delicate flavors. Although there was definitely room for improvement (the pineapple included with the meal was canned as opposed to fresh and my waitress, charming though she was, forgot to include the shrimp upgrade with my order), the experience was an undeniable improvement over my first encounter with Cafe Cusco - and indicative of the degree to which their all of offerings have grown and improved since. FIRST IMPRESSION: Let me preface this review by saying that I genuinely wanted this place to be five stars. Based on the other Yelp reviews and what I had personally been told, I came expecting nothing short of greatness - and perhaps that's why I was disappointed. Make no mistake, the environment and ambiance were AWESOME, inside and out. This is an undeniably cool restaurant concept with a really compelling story behind it, but the food was aggressively mediocre. I had the tilapia, which came in a commendably massive serving, but was a bit heavy on the coconut oil and otherwise lacking in real flavor. The quinoa side had a more complex taste, but ultimately couldn't compensate for the fish itself. I realize my experience is an exception to the otherwise glowing rule among reviews here, which tempts me to give Cafe Cusco another shot, but as of tonight, I just can't justify anything more than three stars. read more

I would like to preface this review by saying I REALLY wanted to like this place and my experience. I'm a Springfield native and vegetarian that had yet to eat here, having heard raves about how unique the food is how vegetarian friendly they are. Alas, one of the worst local food places I've been to. First off, my boyfriend called and made a reservation for us for Valentine's Day. He requested a booth and reserved a table for two for 8:15. We get there 10 minutes early for our reservation. They seat us upstairs at a table smack dab in the very middle of the room that was rickety, meanwhile we noticed two open booths downstairs. So whatever, we felt uncomfortable where we were sat, as it seemed like an afterthought in the upstairs table arrangement. After we are seated, 10 minutes go by before our server, or anyone for that matter, greets us and brings us water. We each order the iced Yerba Mate tea, and she leaves us. Meanwhile, neither of us have eaten there and are burning with menu questions but completely overwhelmed with the choices and lack of pictures for some of the more unique dishes. Another 10 minutes go by before we get our teas. In that 10 minutes we debate on leaving as our table request had already been ignored from the reservation and it took so long for us to be greeted. So, we finally get our teas. Which, admittedly were delicious, very refreshing. We order the fried avocado dip appetizer and our entrees. I'm still unsure but at that point we knew our server didn't care to really offer suggestions or help us understand the menu so we just played Russian roulette with our dinner selections. Keep in mind, this is supposed to be a romantic date, not a nerve-racking ordeal. We get our appetizer and the crowd has thinned out some. The appetizer was...interesting. It was good, perhaps a little small portion wise, but good. Different. We get our entrees, and the food was just...ok. Maybe we just didn't know what to order. I got the sweet potato glass noodles, and my BF got a chicken skewer dish. My noodles were decent, very savory, but lacking in flavor palette, there needed to be more of a sweet to counter the savory, perhaps coconut, maybe tofu, and instead of peas that just kept sliding off the fork maybe broccoli? It was basically glorified Lo Mein and not worth $12. The side salad was ok, the tomatoes were very unripe but the dressing was nice. My bf's dish was basically skewered chicken smothered in Louisiana Brand Hot Sauce, not very "Peruvian" I'd imagine. And once again, seemed very expensive for a less imaginative dish. While we ate, we were unattended entirely. Music was lowered, it felt very awkward. I understand we made a later reservation, but it was offered to us and I feel a restaurant, especially on a restaurant holiday, should be more accommodating to later guests and stay open a little later to those still eating. When we were finished no dessert, to-go tea, cocktails, or anything was offered...keep in mind, a BIG selling point for V-Day. We get the check and they are clearly closing up, its maybe a smidge after 9, and the server disappears for another 10 minutes when we had our check ready. By this point, we're just counting our losses. I was very disappointed. The food was...ok. I would like to try more on the menu, but the service was so neglectful and the general atmosphere screamed IDGAF. I strive to support local business and restaurants are included in that, but it really hurts when service is lacking and the value of your money isn't considered at a local restaurant. I'm 24 and work a customer service job and I get it can be hard especially in peak busy times to handle guests, but it just seems like a real slap to the face when you are kind and patient and it's a date night and its met with neglect and general lack of care. Not sure if I ever want to go back. I've had two friends work there over the years and I expected more. I was mistaken. read more
