Wow,I had not been here in a long time. It has changed for the better in all the right places. It has been voted Best Breakfast for several years and for good cause. We tried the Pork Belly Benedict and the bearnaise sauce is wonderful and the poached eggs were perfect. The biscuits and gravy was obviously house made not that diner packet garbage that most places do. The place was off the hook and we waited a little while but the food came out fast. They have hash browns now which were so crispy and good, most places can't seem master such a simple side, but they do. My hats off to the cooks! They have a whole beer garden out back now to appease you which made the wait enjoyable and the weather was beautiful. Bravo! read more

I recently went here with my best friend and had the eggs benedict with the bottomless mimosa brunch. The benedict was definitely different (ham, spinach, eggs, and bearnise sauce on top of foccaccia bread.) I was apprehensive to try the variation on the classic but I did it anyway and was pleasantly suprised. Every thing was cooked perfectly, the sauce was rich and creamy, and the foccacia bread was to die for. Oh and don't even get me started on the side of potatoes. They were everything breakfast potatoes should be. The service however was definitely lacking. More times than naught, our glasses were empty and our server was MIA. One time he filled up our glasses with champagne and forgot the OJ. He said he'd be right back, but ten minutes later I was seeking out another waitress to help us out. I think next time I will ask to sit in the front room so they don't forget I exist. read more

I liked this place from the moment they set down my presspot of coffee.... Because this was not a simple presspot... This was a thermos presspot hybrid! Guaranteeing not only fresh Joe, but the means to keep it hot... Absolutely genius! Then the first taste.... And MEH. The coffee was bland... Folgers could win this taste test :(. My order off their house specialty menu titled "Masterpieces" was on its way... I could not be deterred by weak coffee with such promises of morning sustinence. I ordered the "fat boy" described : two eggs | black beans | potatoes | house salsa | sour cream | avocado | cilantro | jack cheese | cotija cheese | bacon | cheesy tortillas I salavated as I dreamed of cheesy tortillas.. and the plate arrived... colorful and vast.. i reached for the cheezy tortillaness.. and bit into it... it was also.. very bland.. like queso fresco or mozzerella.. not much taste.. then the beans... also.. very much low on the flavor scale.. as I moved on trying the components.. I was left underwhelmed and somewhat sad... I had built up this breakfast in my head to be the second coming of Brunch.... yet what i found was a plate of bland. When I cook i use very little salt allowing anyone to add to meet their palate.. but when you cook with absolutely no seasoning.. even the best component fall flat on the buds o'taste..... this restaurant is without flavor... a bermuda triangle where nothing with the slightest hint of taste escapes... This is a place of musicians.. on the walls.. pictures of musical references.. even the word CODA is a musical reference... in the kitchen, as my girlfriend witnessed.. seems to be also musicians.. We weren't sure about this place due to the wait being over an hour, but waiting was the best decision. The food was AMAZING. Best brunch! Cafe Coda has something for everyone and everything I tried was top notch. I found the staff to be friendly and accommodating.

I asked for my sourdough toast extra crispy and when it came back it was basically warm bread. When I tried to send it back the wait staff gave me attitude telling me that it was already well done. I changed tactics and stated that I wanted it almost burnt. This time it came back as slightly warmer bread, with the inside almost not even cooked and the outside showing slight signs of being in a toaster. Realizing that if this was their idea of almost burnt, I wouldn't be getting anywhere. I tried the toast and it had a very funny taste to it. The apple cinnamon pancakes weren't much better, the apple was likely a quarter inch dice and spread so thinly that it was as if it wasn't even in the pancake. They tasted basically like normal pancakes. read more

Prices seem like they got raised quite a bit over the last couple years, but this place shows a lot of effortless class and execution on the food. Eggs cooked over med aren't burned, tells me the griddle is set low enough to cook eggs properly. The lemon poppyseed pancakes were an excellent recommendation, and you know that execution is top notch when the food is meant to be eaten with nothing added. In less than 3 weeks, Cafe Coda responded to my review (and a number of other disappointed vegans, I'm sure) by adding a vegan menu that is AMAZING and is out on every table. The chilaquiles are not only delicious but are unique vegan fare. Adding soyrizo as a veg protein option also makes my heart all aflutter. Clearly, they care a lot about making their diners happy. So while you can still expect a significant wait if you arrive after 930 or so on the weekends, it's totally worth it. I look forward to continuing my reign. read more

**3.5 STARS Came in with a friend around 11:10AM on a Saturday morning and after signing our name onto their waiting list, we were seated by 11:50AM - the farmer's market takes place a few blocks down on Saturday mornings so it wasn't a surprise that there was a bit of a wait. After reading a bunch of reviews and getting recommendations from some locals, my friend and I ended up ordering the chilaquiles and lemon poppyseed pancakes. The chilaquiles were delicious and had a great medley of flavors but it tasted even better after we dumped a bunch of hot sauce on it. If you can handle a fiery tongue and a snotty nose, definitely throw some on there! The lemon poppyseed pancakes were thick and fluffy but other than that, they tasted like normal buttermilk pancakes. The lemon butter was good but they only give a dollop of butter in the center so you can't really spread that tarty goodness around. And the amount of raspberry puree distributed is so small that you can't taste it at all. Note: We were able to ask for more lemon butter but they charge extra for raspberry puree. They also give you a big bottle of syrup but I'm not particularly fond of syrup so I just spread the extra butter around. Didn't end up finishing this plate because while it was good, it wasn't great. read more

Probably the best hidden gem of a spot in Chico! When I say "hidden,", I'm not joking. The venue is a stone's throw from the heart of downtown, but tucked onto a quiet side street laden with other hipster-esque businesses. Other than the whimsical exterior paint, there isn't much to distinguish this restaurant from the street. I can guarantee you, though, that you'll see it on a weekend morning as there is an ever-present line of customers out the door! Very unique building with a few separated dining rooms. This place transforms into an underground music venue in the evenings, and you can certainly see where the stage would be. The decor is bright and fresh, and the place is very clean every time I go. You can't go wrong with anything on their fun menu. The items are presented colorful and fresh, and there are also a number of breakfast cocktails to choose from. My go-to is the Chilaquiles plate, which is essentially tortilla strips fried with eggs, hot sauce, black beans, and lots of veggies. So, so good. I don't live in Chico anymore. However, each time I visit, I make sure to not leave without stopping here! read more

Not from around this area, but my girlfriend has been here and it sounded like a good spot. My only minor hit on them was that the coffee was not the best. But here's for all the good from this place. - there was no wait for us to sit down and have a server come ask for drinks right away. The server was pleasant and always check in with us to see how we were doing. - the menu has a very good amount of options from sweet treats to savory meals. They also are willing to adjust certain details of meals to accommodate the customer. - my girlfriend ordered an eggs Benedict that was off the charts delicious 5/5 . Yoke was perfect and presentation was amazing. I'll have a photo below. I ordered chilaquiles which was also very good. Idk if I would order it again after trying my gf meal. 4/5 for my meal. We then decided to split a sweet treat of french toast original. They were cooked perfectly and devoured them. 5/5. - we got talked into a french press large there and thinking the coffee would be delicious to take some home, but it was very mediocre. Upon entering we were greeted by a smiley waitress that had us sign in. We waited about 10 minutes for a table and were seated in the middle of the room. Local atmosphere, neat lighting. And then we waited for 20 minutes...servers kept walking right by us with no acknowledgement and I began to wonder...were we sitting in waitstaff limbo? Five tables that came in after us had ordered and some had even gotten their food. Having never been there before, we thought maybe we were doing something out of order so my husband got up to get the attention of the waitstaff. She promptly came over and took our order with an "oh, sorry!". A different gentleman (with awesome hair/facial hair) took care of us the rest of the time, he actually checked in and got us refills etc. The food was good but I don't have patience for this kind of service unfortunately. There is only one bathroom for a restaurant that service like 150 people when all the tables and chairs are full. There is aways a line and they're constantly out of paper towels. It was okay. I liked the vibe but it was a really long wait for a table and an hr wait for food. Our water glasses were constantly empty but they were busy. Yeah. I find it very unprofessional that every server I've had when with my peers assume that we will be rowdy or not leave a tip, therefore they will treat us poorly. Servers are not there for tips, they are there to provide great customer service and give guests a lasting impression. However, when I've been with my parents, they treat our table great. Wow, I never thought I'd find a place like this in Chico! Not only are there PLENTY of vegetarian options, but the food is amazing!! Every time we go to Chico we usually got to Sins of Cortes, but this time I decided to do a little Yelp research and saw all the positive e reviews of this place and so we gave it a try. I cannot believe I haven't found this place before!! Let's just say that this will be my go to spot in Chico when I visit. On to the food: We started off with coffee which was amazing, it comes from Santa Cruz. Then we split a piece of the nutella waffle w/ banana, YUM! I would suggest sharing it as an appetizer because there are so many other tasty things to try! The sis and I shared the veggie with corn tortillas (good suggestions by our waitress) which was a very generous portion. My only complaint was I would have liked to have had the tofu more like a scramble instead of big chunks. I was expecting something different, the big pieces of tofu mixed in with potatoes didn't come together for me, but the flavor was there. Overall, this place is great and I will be back! read more

5 stars for food, 1 star for service and silly additional charges. This weekend I ordered a $13.50 egg and potato based breakfast that has corn and green sauce. The green sauce was minimal so I asked for a side of sauce. When the bill came it had a 75 cent charge for green sauce. I asked the waiter about it (who cares about 75 cents??!) just out of curiousity. The waiter thought it was a good idea to have a full discussion with me about why he was well within his rights to charge for the side of green sauce...blah blah blah...I did not engage in a retort as I'm sure it was not the place to argue... All I was thinking is that $13.50 for an egg and potato dish with no meat should cover, a little extra the sauce is all. Seemed simple and straight forward to me?! Cafe Coda is really a great breakfast spot. My boyfriend had the Applewood Sausage Hash. The best part was the sausage, which came from one of our favorite places to get sandwiches, the Chico Meat Locker. Both were really good, but the Coda Benedict was really the star. It came on top of house made parmesean crusted foccacia with spinach, ham, and poached eggs smothered in a bearnaise sauce. I was slightly surprised to see the use of a bearnaise sauce than the traditional hollandaise sauce, but I was not disappointed. The bearnaise was wonderfully herby and flavorful. If you go to Cafe Coda, I definitely recommend the Coda Benedict. They also have some great teas there too. Can't wait to go back! -We went a second time and my boyfriend got the Fat Boy and absolutely loved it. He loved how all the flavors of ingredients complemented each other. Although next time he wants to try to substitute the bacon for chorizo. To sum it up- I LOVE THIS PLACE. If I want to go out to breakfast, I go here. No questions asked. It is by far the best breakfast I have had in Chico. Update: Tried the chicken pesto sandwich for lunch, and it is AWESOME. Got it with the soup of the day, the first time they had tomato soup which paired great with the sandwich. The second time was a baked potato soup, which was tasty, but felt a little heavy with the sandwich. The sandwich itself is huge for me, I usually take half of it home. Just a great sandwich with bacon, chicken, pesto, mozz, and shallot aioli. Now it's a really hard choice of lunch or breakfast. Oh and lunch is only served on the weekdays. read more
