We are new to town and have been in search of a great Sunday morning breakfast joint... cafe Coda hit the mark. We went in at 10:30 on a Sunday morning and were seated right away. We went in with our two young daughters and the staff was very accommodating. Our 7 year old fell in love with the idea of Nutella and bananas but wasn't too keen on the idea of French toast "no problem, would you like pancakes instead honey..." Needless to say, she was thrilled with her breakfast, which I stole a bite of and have to say it was a great sweet treat. My husband had the Coda Benedict... of which I stole a bite of as well... (Can you see a pattern here?) The béarnaise was so light and had a wonderful citrus punch. It was served on house made parmesan foccacia instead of the standard English muffin and it added a new dimension of texture and flavor. I had the Fat Boy plate. It was house potatoes and black beans with a generous scoop of house made Pico, cilantro, diced avocado and two eggs over medium nestled right on top. Served alongside were two warm cheesy tortillas perfect for slopping up the beans... it was messy and very different from my normal breakfast routine and I loved it. Oh, and did I mention that coffee is served in a French press? My husband and I shared a large and we each had two healthy cups. The service was top notch and the food was eclectic. We will defiantly be returning. Maybe next time we will try out one of their evenings and catch some pizza and beer and a live show... sans kidos. I don't get all the hype... I went with a rather large party for breakfast. The wait seemed like forever. Then once we were seated we were squished into an awkward little cubby in the corner. I've been coming to this place since 2007 when I first arrived in Chico for college. That was the moment I came across their Coda Benedict's. It was an unexpected beautiful hungover surprise. That first bite was like I could taste color. The eggs perfectly poached, the yoke just the right runny consistency, the béarnaise sauce with a hint of cayenne is like god himself peed on your plate and you say may I have some more! The aroma of the potato's with rosemary was intoxicating and mesmerizing. It woke me up out of that hazy half asleep hungover state I was in. I thought that was all I need in that moment to recover and begin my day but I was wrong! They went and followed up with the llano seco ham and two beautifully toasted pieces of focaccia bread that helped soak up the extra béarnaise sauce and yoke, but that was not all it soaked up. The tears from my overwhelming feeling of love for these Coda Benedicts where getting mixed and soaked up as well. I'm pretty snobby when it comes to natural/organic/local foods, and though this place has a slight health food feel they do not offer truly healthy meals. the service was so-so, and the food was nothing special. I am apparently the only one that has had a bad experience here. I took my family to lunch there yesterday and the service was awful. Took 15 minutes after we were seated to get our beverages, then after we ordered our food it didn't show up for another 45 minutes. When I say that our food showed up, I mean that 3 plates showed up and then another 10 minutes later our 3 year old son's food showed up. Our drinks only got refilled sparsely. The food gave both my wife and I stomach pains afterword ( I will spare you the details).My French toast was very dry, the dried cranberries were more like tiny rocks that should have broken a tooth. My daughter's "Sausage Hash" was more like a sausage patty with home fries surrounding it. Save your cash, there are much better ways to spend $50! read more

The food is great! I order the Athens and it was everything I expected it to be. The service was lacking. The place was not busy, so I don't understand why the service was bad. Our glasses were empty and our waiter was less than pleased to answer questions. I always tip the waiters, because I know it's not an easy job, but when I waited and waited and even raised my tab so I could give it to the waiter (because I needed change) I was so disappointed I took the tip back. Several times the waiter looked at me and turned around the other way without any gesture or comment that he had seen me. I would love to give Coda 5 stars because the food is great and they have the best shows in Chico. The fact of the matter is that the service is beyond terrible. Even when there is no one in the restaurant the food takes forever and heaven forbid you need a refill or sugar or water or anything because your server isn't going to check on you. I am sure not EVERY server there is this bad but EVERY time I have been there it has been mind blowing how down right terrible the service is. Cafe Coda is one of the best things happening in Chico. First of all the food. I've had the pizza at a ska show once and I remember it being good but just not my favorite flavors. The breakfast has never been disappointing...never. I've tried a few things and they are all delicious. They have some really good prices and great service. The club side of it is also really nice. One of my favorites! I've been going to Coda for breakfast and shows for a few years now. It's pretty amazing! Today I went to lunch for the first time... It was brilliant! To start, I had the hardest time deciding, everything sounded amazing! My boyfriend the eggs benedict connoisseur got that and said that it was awesome. I settled for the Lemon Poppy seed pancakes and normally I'm not a pancake person but these were dreamy. I was born and raised in Chico, but it wasn't until very recently that I discovered Cafe Coda. Hands down my favorite breakfast joint in Chico. My favorite dish is the Applewood Sausage Hash and the French press coffee is excellent. The atmosphere and service are excellent, but don't expect a real speedy breakfast. If you are going here for breakfast, plan on a leisurely meal with friends. Follow up breakfast with a stroll through Bidwell Park and when you're hungry for lunch, go back to Cafe Coda. read more

Let me preface this review and all my reviews by stating 5 stars are not easily given, they are earned and Cafe Coda has earned 5 stars in my book. I've been here multiple times and each time it gets better and better. I've tried the chilaquiles, the breakfast wrap and most recently, the parfait yogurt and fresh fruit bowl. I have to say this used to be our most favorite breakfast place. Unfortunately, the last couple of times that we have gone in for breakfast, we have been really disappointed. 2 weeks ago we went in around 8 am. My husband ordered a Black and Black as usual. It's typically made with espresso and Guinness. Since my husband doesn't like Guinness, he always orders his with Old Rasputin; which by the way was suggested by a waiter that used to work there. The waitress actually looked at my husband and said "ew, have you had that before? That's really gross." Meaning made with Old Rasputin and not Guinness. My husband told her that yes he has had it before. She said "well if you like it that way, but that's gross." I couldn't believe it. Fabulous breakfast place with delicious and unique food! My boyfriend, his mother and I went to Cafe Coda for breakfast last Sunday. We had to wait about 10 minutes for a table and were seated amongst several groups of hipsters and a few older couples. The atmosphere was great, but a little loud. We were given menus and immediately asked what we wanted to drink. We ordered tea for my boyfriend's mom and the french press coffee for us. Both were tasty and very hot. They even brought steamed milk for her tea when she asked. We ordered the banana nutella french toast to share since it sounded so amazing, and oh my gosh we ate it all and wanted more! I ordered the chilaquilas, which were delicious and came in a huge portion. My boyfriend ordered the Pesto, which was so amazingly good I kept stealing bites. His mother ordered the orange cranberry french toast and ate it all. The food was delicious, the atmosphere fun, and the prices reasonable. Good, but needs improvement. First impression: It has a nice ambience. We went there because of the menu. There are a lot of really interesting, and creative, breakfast items. If the rating were based only on the menu, it would be 5 stars. The service was good. The eggs benedict were great. The fried potatoes that were served with it were awesome. The chicken sausage hash was disappointing. The sausage gave every appearance of being cooked separately in a microwave rather than being fried with the potatoes and onions, as a hash should be. It was not browned at all. The sourdough toast didn't taste much like sourdough, and was not buttered. Should I have to ask for butter on my toast? You can't buy coffee by the cup. You have to buy french press pots. This makes life easier for the wait staff but runs the cost up a bit. We discovered the meals to be more expensive than our internet search suggested. Particularly where the hash is concerned, $13 should buy a better breakfast. So they lose a star for a poorly executed hash, and another for overall value. As far as I could tell it's a bit overpriced for what you get. read more

Have loved coming here for years every time I am visiting Chico, which is often. My family got into a discussion over Easter dinner about who serves the best breakfast in Chico and it was unanimous that Cafe Coda's food is best hands down. My favorite dish is the eggs Benedict florentine when I want a BIG breakfast, and scrambled eggs, toast and fruit if I'm going more simple. Very good quality food, good presentation. I used to love this place, and yes the food is good. It used to be better. But the service is terrible. We had finished our meal before anyone came to see how we were doing. My soup was luke warm, and my husband's side of chips and salsa had no salsa. There were lots of other diners, but the staff wasn't so slammed that someone couldn't check in with us while we were actually eating. The server looked irritated when we asked about the salsa. Fantastic breakfast. 5 stars might be a smidge too generous, but only a smidge. I ordered a cup of coffee, a single lemon poppyseed pancake, and the "Coda Benedict". COFFEE It came in some kind of press thing. I'm not nearly fancy enough to have ever encountered such a device, but maybe this is what a "French press" is? Anyway. It took me a while to realize I needed to push the plunger down to get all the coffee, but it was great coffee; rich, dark, flavorful, delicious with cream. LEMON POPPYSEED PANCAKE Delicious pancake with herb-infused butter and some nice raspberry sauce. The pancake was light and fluffy. I personally prefer pancakes like those at La Note, which are a bit gooey in the center, but this was a very tasty pancake. CODA BENEDICT Eggs Benedict on toasted foccacia with a side of potatoes. The eggs benedict was quite good; I am not a fan of English muffins, and thought the foccacia was a great choice. The potatoes were amazing: tender, with one side perfectly crisped and browned. If I have a complaint, it's that they served too many potatoes; I couldn't comfortably finish them all. That's a pretty minor complaint. I definitely plan on returning, and this could become a regular spot for me. read more
