Having only eaten here once, I thought the food was decent. I'm not entirely sure why the reviews are low, but my experience was not bad. Service was fair, restaurant was clean, and prices were average. Really no complaints, but I suppose nothing stood out in either a negative or positive direction. My only word of advice: If you decide to sit outside, don't. You'll have food exhaust pumped onto you from the kitchen fan the entire time... which is a bit disgusting. read more

With Joya down the street being packed, Cafe Chili seemed to be the best possible next choice. The decor was somewhat interesting, albeit a bit misguided. With any Thai restaurant you have to employ the pad thai test, similar to the samosa test for Indian restaurants. If a Thai restaurant can't make a good pad thai they probably can't make anything else of decent quality. And so for Cafe Chili, the grade was about a C-. I visited Cafe Chili on Fri, July 23, 2021 around 2:30 pm. First off, I loved that they followed COVID procedures including collecting email information for contact tracing. There was no one in the restaurant when I visited but I did not find it strange in these times and the actual time I visited was around 2:30 pm. I ordered the Pad Cee Eew, a pork chop and a beer. The Pad Cee Eew, was PHENOMENAL. I ordered it with just veggies and it was just great. I asked for additional seasonings and it added a nice taste to the dish. I never got the beer, the server remembered toward the end of my meal so I told her to forget about it. It seemed odd that she would forget an item given that I was the only one in the place at that time. The pork chop was a BIG mistake. When it arrived at the table, only one side had been cooked. The other side was just white and unappealing. The server tried to say that was the way it was supposed to be served but that was just ridiculous. She brought it back to the kitchen and when she returned, it was burned. It was ridiculous that she or the kitchen staff would think serving burnt food to customers was acceptable. If not for the horrible pork chop dish, I would say a return visit was imminent but there are too many good Thai places around for me to take the chance again. read more

After walking around the fringes of DUMBO on a Sunday, it was around 9PM and we were stylishly starving and started walking past the lunch-on-the-go's and fast food restaurants on Court St. As lack of strength precipitated by lack of nourishment would have it, we decided to sit and chat here. Since I usually order a bunch of appetizers instead of entrees, we divided and conquered a array of the usual, steamed vegetable dumplings, and the unusual, Cilantro Corn Critters and Pan Seared Thai Vegetable Pancakes. The food was pretty good, but I don't think it warranted any attention that seems as polarized in some of these reviews. However, the space itself was really nice, conducive for good conversation, and the service was exceptionally attentive and the waiters were incredibly sweet. I think we left a 25% tip. Beautiful restaurant, great service. Super nice ladies let us linger. It was a slow night so we stayed well past the end of dinner because it was so comfortable. We shared the corn fritters to start. The fritters come with a spicy sweet sauce but can stand on their own. I had the Sauteed Tiger Shrimp as an entree. The veges were cooked but not overdone with a delicious sauce. The shrimp include bacon which was a nice added touch. But I could've had a few more shrimp. I've never had bacon in Thai food but found it a nice surprise. This is certainly not the best Thai food I've had but I had a great time, had a great meal and look forward to dining again. read more

I was hoping to try Joya for the first time but by happenstance the building close by, above, or nearby collapsed or something like that so it had to shut down. Bummer. I'd give one star solely on my meal. I got the salmon and it was horrendous!! How do you mess up salmon? It was dry, bland and all sorts of bad. Maybe I should've asked myself why would you order a salmon dish at a freaking Thai restaurant. But, salmon isn't really that hard to mess up, just don't overcook it...and of course my dish was way overcooked. My friends ordered the usual and typical (which I should've done) choices of Pad Thai and Pad See Ew. Their meals was a hell of a lot better than mine, hence the extra star. The papaya salad was good but the eggplant appetizer was greasy. But I guess Thai food isn't the healthiest option. Service was incredibly slow!! I've tried almost everything on the menu and i use to come here religiously after i would go to the movies. It is a good snack to have if you want a quick bite. We started with the steamed spring rolls which tasted like fish and were too crispy to have been steamed. I had the basil fried rice which was bland - the tofu was dried out and the skimped on the veggies. My GF thought the massaman curry was too thin and also lacked vegetables. The food is so good, I had to revisit it three times in one week. I have been here plenty of times it is the best Thai spot in the are. The lunch specials are nicely priced and well proportioned. Dinner entrees are really hard to choose from, I guess that is what keeps me going back. Very reasonably priced at $8 each for dinner- we had the Pad Thai and the Chicken Green Curry. Both were very good... the default spice level is pretty low, so you may have to ask for extra chili. One of the worst Thai food I've ever had in a long time. I had Volcano chicken and Drunken noodles for my hubs to go. Mine was dry yellow pieces of leather with sweet, watery sauce on the side, while his was NOT AT ALL like Drunken noodles should be. More like a very BLAND pad see yu. Usually I go to Joya, but I wanted to try a new place. Plus they charge extra for brown rice and that was the only thing tasty about it. duh~ I take my hunger seriously. My girl and I pigged out in Cafe Chili it was a slow night and we had the whole place to ourselves which was nice. We started with the roti and massaman curry chicken it was very good, then we had the curry puffs loved the presentation (photo attached). We then moved onto drunken noodles which was made in a very authentic style, loved it. Next came the red curry with duck, the taste was wonderful and a little spicy. I simply gave this restaurant 3 stars because of the fact that I was charged twice on my debit card which was an inaccuracy. I grabbed lunch worth my friend and sister and we each used out card to pay. Not only was my friend charged for her meal but I was charged double. How does that happen? Oh this was such fun! Got to meet up with my hubby on Christmas day and this was one of the few places that had vegan options that were open this day! It wasnt very full, but it appeared that there was only one server working. It took a lot longer than hoped to order our food and get our checks and such. I had an iced Thai tea without milk, and vegan tropical fried rice! My hubby had the drinking noodles. He truly enjoyed his meal, I as well aside from a few things. In the menu, it didn't say that my dish came with cashews, which is a good thing I'm a lucky eater and picked them out since I am not able to digest nuts, and I'm glad that they were whole instead of crushed in. As for the pineapple, I personally love pineapple and I was upset that there wasn't much of it. It's just fried rice with veggies and a few pieces of pineapple. I thought itd be cooked in a pineapple juice or something to get more of that flavor. Overall it was a good dish but it wasn't amazing. My iced tea was made through a syrup, and it was intensely sweet on its own, but with my meal it was okay. I've been working through the various Thai places located around me in downtown Brooklyn and decided to try Cafe Chili last night. The delivery was quick, it actually arrived a little early with no problems, the food was pretty bland. I typically start a new Thai restaurant with pad thai and some appetizer that I'm familiar with. This time they had crunchy taro bites which sounded interested, I love taro anything, so I gave it a go. They were pretty bland, no flavor at all. I've never really had taro before that wasn't in custard or bubble tea, but I thought it was supposed to have at least a subtle sweetness to it. Fortunately there was an incredibly sweet and spicy sauce to go with it which was kind of tasty. Still they'd be edible on their own, fried foods are good in their own way. The pad thai was also really bland. Of the other thai places I've tried around here, I think Lemongrass Grill is probably still the best in the area, unfortunately their food quality seems to be dropping. I also think Spice has the best curry of any thai place I've tried in the area. read more

The presentation is okay, taste and selection all are OK. Decent spot to go to if you happen to be on court street and you're hungry enough. The decor and music selection however is interesting. This wasn't where I'd intended on going for dinner, but since where I had planned on going closes at the unreasonable hour of 9pm, I ended up here. I was attracted by the really nice decor. I overheard the people who were getting seated right before me also commenting on how 'pretty' it was. Also, the prices were reasonable, and the take-away menus outside had 15% off coupons on them - so, looked good to me! I got the "pretty package" appetizer, which was shumai-style shrimp and chicken dumplings, with a soy-based dipping sauce. Tasty, but extra points for nice presentation, arranged on a platter with carrot flowers and shredded beets. As an entree I got chicken penang curry. I asked for pineapples in it, since they weren't listed on the menu, and got them added in - at no additional charge! The curry had a nice, thick, rich sauce, and was good. I wouldn't necessarily travel out of my way to come here - I have equivalently good Thai places closer to me - but if in the neighborhood, I would eat here again. read more

All of the typical cocktails had sake listed instead of the usual gin or vodka as the main ingredient. Outrageous if you ask me! Service is pretty spotty. There was an older woman who was friendly but she kept disappearing for long stretches of time and there was a younger surly looking woman. The young one looked like she wanted to slap me when I requested salt. I mean was she the cook or is she dating the cook? I needed salt. I noticed everyone else had water glasses but my friend and I were never given water even when I made cow eyes at the grumpy young one as she refilled glasses at other tables not even then did it click to bring us water.The chicken and shrimp dumpling wasn't very good or tasty, it was a chore to finish and if you know me you would know I typically demolish them. My green curry was very spicy as I requested, (boy some water would have been great!) but it was more vegetables than rice and curry in my bowl so it wasn;t enjoyable and my friend;s basil rice lacked real flavor. My booze and dinner plans not really reached I asked for the check from Surly but I guess she forgot so we sat and waited. I told myself Yelp was spot on this time. 3/5!! read more

I am compelled to write a review on my favorite neighborhood Thai cheap eat because of all the nonsense I've read so far. First, if you appreciate Thai food then you do not order Pad Thai because that's as generic as it can get. Expand your horizons! Do you only order cheese on your pizza too?! There are so many affordable options at this cozy and well decorated corner on Court Street. I'm originally from San Francisco and have had my fair share of Thai cuisine, and this place takes the cake in my opinion. First they tell me the food will be delivered in 20 minutes, the reality it was more like an hour. The food arrived cold. The portions are tiny. The food was not spicy. The fish was over cooked. I usually ask them to make it spicy as nothing here is. If I'm feeling soupy - salmon lemongrass. Trust me. Big chunks of salmon and a nice lemongrass kick. Sooo good. I really wanted to give this place 4 stars, as I think it's some of the better Thai food in the neighborhood - great flavor, good prices, good selection, fast service, and nice decor. I have only good things to say about the couple of times I ate in the restaurant for lunch. I always order the Thai Salad and the Panang Curry with either chicken or vegetables. We decided to order for delivery the other night, and I can't even believe this was the same restaurant. When dining in the restaurant, the curry was thick, flavorful, and had that rich reddish hue that Panang does. When I ordered it for delivery, it was soupy and resembled Wonton Soup - with that thin, translucent tan-like color. Not at all what that curry is supposed to look like. My husband had the exact same experience with the Massaman curry - great in-house, not great for delivery. Maybe it's the way it's prepared for delivery. On the plus side, even with the sub-par delivery curry... the vegetables were still cooked well - too many Thai places fall short on that one, so I'll give them some credit. I wish I took a picture of the sad lunch special - it was 12 dollars and all I got was two teaspoonfuls of noodles for the price. I was so taken aback, I asked the server/manager if it is normal for it to be so small. She said that the kitchen can prepare extra noodles. Mind you, there were less than four tables seated and the food had already taken half an hour to come out, then I had to wait another 15 minutes for "extra noodles." Since we wasted our lunch hour waiting, I had to take my food to go - she said that the extra noodles can be packed to go. I go back to my office to eat it because it was already getting late and I was still hungry; open the pint annnd it was basically just two extra teaspoonfuls with a ton of sauce. I am still hungry for 12 dollars and I do not eat a lot. It was really sad and really pathetic. What a complete waste of my time and money. I ate here once, six years ago, it wasn't bad, it wasn't good (but I do not remember the portion to be so tiny) so I never came back until today, just on a whim, decided to try it again - needless to say, I will not be back. read more
