I've been to this little hideaway of a gem near downtown twice, once on a Friday evening and again on a Saturday morning for brunch. Both experiences were really good. The menu is very diverse, lots of European food, including various croq types good for breakfast or lunch, bisques, salads, steaks, pastas, etc. They have a great beer and wine selection. I've had a few Belgian beers on tap and loved them. The original owner was from Brussels and it is now run by his Brussells-born daughter. The chef is quite good, he is amazing at producing the diverse dishes very quickly at high quality. We were served by the daughter, she was very friendly and competent. The place is iconic inside--feels like you're in a European pub with all the decals and an old style bar. The wine & beer menu along with the dinner menu had lots of variety and a great selection. The owner was the hostess and server-handling the entire restaurant single handedly. Love her accent--and it made us feel like the recipes would be homemade and legit Belgian food. It took a little while for our food to come. We did not get offered second round of drinks. The garlic butter mussels in a bowl (served with a garlic butter broth) were way better tasting and a much better deal than the garlic butter mussels in a plate. We tried the escargot, chicken cordon bleu, & beef stew. Chicken cordon bleu was dry and chewy. Not sure why I expected it to be wayyyy better than any of the frozen ones I've tried. The fries were thick cut potatoes--delish! I subbed the Brussels sprouts for the green beans. When asked I was told the Brussels sprouts were blanched and then sautéed. They more of a mushy boiled kind. Not my fave. We were running late for a show because the dinner took a while so we didn't get to try dessert. Arrived about 45 min before closing on a Sunday, probably not ideal but we were RIGHT THERE and I was really craving something European for a late brunch. I ordered the croque Parisien (French style grilled ham & cheese, with an egg and sauteed mushrooms on top), boyf had the poulet sandwich (thin chicken breast) and we had a flight of Belgian beers. Our sandwiches came with delicious homemade Belgian fries which were probably the highlight of the meal. The waiter also offered the homemade mayo for the fries which was great, too. The service was really phenomenal, boyf and I each ordered 2 beers for our 4-beer flight and after ordering, I realized we didn't order one of my favorite beers; the waiter saw my *distress* and brought over a flight size of my favorite beer free of charge. He didn't seem bothered at all by us being there so close to closing time, neither did the other young waiter. However, the owner, well, she looked pretty pissed that we were there SO late...(we still had 15 min before closing and we were paying our bill). The ambience of this place is good and the staff is friendly. I wouldn't say their food was spectacular or special by any means. To be honest, it reminds me of bar food. Impeccable texture, crispy coating, drizzled with a sauce that is indescribable. I hear the cheese croquettes are amazing too. Traditional Beef Stew - Tender, flavorful meat that packed its own unique flavor, swimming in a thick stew with all of the traditional vegetables and trimmings. Le Boef Sandwich - If the Philly Cheesesteak had a sophisticated, wise grandfather. No grease here, just layers and layers of delicious beef, caramelized onions, bell peppers and a melted layer of Swiss. The bread was doughy in the center and crispy, flaky on the outside--exactly the way French bread should be. Fries- I mean, what can I say? These fries were perfect. Thick like steak fries, yet every single one was hot and crunchy. Made to order and it shows. Many items are made completely in-house, so be patient while your food is being cooked to perfection. Such a lovely rainy day to take a break from everything and have a nice brunch with each other. Thanks to John, we are enchanted to meet the super nice and friendly owner Catherine Duwez. Her presence definitely makes our visit a more enjoyable one. The mussels are plum and fresh because they are never frozen, and flown in from a location we shall not disclosed here. Not even a single mussel is over-cooked or tough at all like some other places. Eating those crispy Belgium fries with house-prepared Mayo and Mustard is exactly how we like it too. We finish our meal with a Classic Liegeoise Waffle with Vanilla Ice Cream and Belgium Chocolate that is to die for and a cup of Cappuccino. What more can you ask on a day like this? We got the garlic mussels, but I would imagine any style would be great. Recommend the braised endives as a side, lots of flavor. My girlfriend and I went to Cafe Brussels for a drink at 5pm. The door was open so we walked in and were intercepted by an older woman I knew to be the owner. She rudely told us they weren't open for another 30 minutes. Yikes! All we wanted was a beer and probably would have eventually ordered dinner. She couldn't have been accommodating and let us sit at the bar? What an icy welcome. One thing for sure is we won't be back. Any restaurant where staff are unwelcoming is one the public shouldn't patronize in my opinion. Owners of restaurants should be ambassadors of goodwill. read more

I met up with friends for brunch today. I hadn't heard of this place until the other day when we were making plans to meet up. I was a little weary of the location as far as parking, but they have their own lot in the back! They also share it with the little cafe next door (which I didn't even notice until we were leaving). They have lots and lots of beer. I love beer, but not with brunch. We ended up doing mimosas. They don't have a full bar (we were considering Baileys and coffee). I'm going to have to come back after work for a beer or two and a crepe. The menu is pretty extensive. Their brunch option is a really good deal. You choose three dishes (appetizer, entree, dessert) from a preset list for $20. I had the chicken croquette, steak a cheval (with eggs fried hard), and the classic Brussels waffle. I've never been to Europe, but I would imagine that this dining experience is how it is over there. The dishes aren't super large (but are still filling) and each course takes some time. They do not rush the courses. I think we were there for about 2.5 hours. My food was excellent. The waffle was to die for. If you have a sweet tooth, I would recommend it. The steak is basically a hamburger patty with a fried egg on top. It also comes with a salad on the side. Some of the ladies had mussels. I ate the onions out of the pot and they were so good and flavorful. My friend ordered a crepe Suzette and said it was good but very very sweet. The crepes looked so good. I want to come back and try one (along with a Belgian beer). The owners pretty much were working the entire restaurant. I had dinner here one night last week and parked on the street not knowing they had a parking lot in back. Walking in the front door, I immediately liked the decor that gave a European pub feel to the restaurant. I felt obligated to order mussels like they specialize here. The last time I ate mussels prepared like this was several years ago when I went to England. So I ordered the Moules Catherine which is a sampler plate of 3 mussels each bathed in one of 5 different sauces. I also asked for a cup of onion soup for an appetizer song with a glass of Blanche de Bruxelles beer. The beer and soup showed up within about 10 minutes after ordering. The soup had a thick layer of grautineed cheese on top. I found the cheese to be very chewy. Sometimes it was almost like bubble gum. The soup itself had the requisite croutons and cooked onions in the broth. I don't eat onion soup often however this version was good but not anymore for me to rate it higher than a 3 which is A-OK. The beer was decent with a light taste and I gave it a 3.5. The mussels arrived about 15 minutes later. I enjoyed all of the sauces with the exception of the spicy tomato sauce. It was a little more spicy than I like. The others were all good and I think my fave was the garlic flavored style. Honestly, mussels are not my favorite seafood. I think they were good but again rated them as a 3 so perhaps take that into consideration if you love mussels and you might rate them higher. If I return, I would like to try some of the other entrees like the pork chops, meatloaf, etc. my table service was adequate. I did enjoy the serenading accordion player that was there on my Wednesday night visit. Dressed in costume he did a nice job of performing. My meal of one beer, soup and mussels with tax and tip was over $51. In my opinion, a little pricey. All things considered including the price factored in to warrant me giving an overall score of 3. Come here for an European meal experience without the flight going there. read more

There's a lot to like about Cafe Brussels. First off, how many Belgian restaurants do you know of in Houston? My point exactly. It's something a little different and I'm all about variety. Cafe Brussels has a homey feel, kind of like you've been transported to Belgium for an hour or two. First off, Belgian beer is some of my favorite beer on the planet and they have a nice selection. We were celebrating my friend's birthday so started off with some steamed mussels in a mushroom sauce. Like the Belgian waffle, Belgium is also known for their 'moules' or mussels. I'm not a big fan of mussels but I appreciated the quality. Then had the chicken cordon bleu with potato croquettes and green beans. Fantastic on all fronts. Where things started to fall apart was the service. If you've ever been to Europe, you know that service is typically slow and the waiters don't seem to care. This is how I felt at Cafe Brussels. I guess they were trying to give me the authentic experience! There was a couple that came in at about 9 P.M. and waited for 10 minutes but the only waitress working and the owner were MIA. After waiting at least 10 minutes without being seated, they left. At the beginning of the meal, I asked our waitress if she can do something special for the birthday boy. While not something I expect, it's pretty much common practice for restaurants to give you a dessert on the house for a special occasion. Cafe Brussels charged us for the dessert so that was a letdown. If only the service matched the food, we might have something special here. read more

I had the Flemish stew with the fries and homemade mayo. The restaurant was pretty empty on a Wednesday night. Talked to the owner for a while. She's a very passionate lady who takes pride in what she serves and maintaining authenticity. Hence the unique decor, which has her own personal touch. Take it from a Belgian: this place is the real deal! I've lived in the US for a couple years and business brought me to Houston and I was delighted to find my native cuisine here. The restaurant is easy to reach and conveniently has a parking lot in the back. The atmosphere is like a cafe in brussels, high sealings, lots of little knicknacks and a classic bar. Even the chairs felt like home. I was seated by the friendly owner and they brought out some bread, baguette with butter. I ordered a beer (they have an excellent selection-forgo the stella and try one of the others!) and looked over the menu. I started with cheese croquettes and they came out perfect squares with fried parsley and lemon wedges! Next I ordered mussels with garlic. The source is Washington state and i was sceptical at first (the Belgians believe that the best come from Holland) but the quality was certainly comparable! Very good. H & I met up with some friends for dinner here. He has been here several times for lunch (he loves the tuna salad) & has been keen on trying their mussels so when my friend suggested this place we immediately agreed. The next thing I did was to check out the food porn pic on Yelp & check out the reviews. My, I was in for a treat! Once our drink order was taken, I glanced at the menu which we all know is a joke because I already had my mind set on what I wanted to order (thanks to the food porn pics), the Flemish beef stew. For an appetizer we ordered the Moules Catherine which is a tasting sampler of their mussels. This serving does not come as an appetizer, it is an entrée but with four to share it was perfect. My two favorites were the curried mussels & the Diable which were served with a spicy tomato based sauce. Our main courses hit the table & the Les Carbonades a la Flamande (Flemish stew) was absolutely divine. The beef is braised in beer & served with big chunks of carrots in a heavenly roux. This meal is very hearty & with it being cold outside, really hit the spot. This entrée comes with a side of their delectable fries. Even if you do not like French fries you have to try CB's fries. You're welcome. H had the Le Pain de Viande au Choux Rouge which is high-falutin' for meatloaf in homemade gravy with Brussels sprouts. Wow, this meatloaf is not the meatloaf I grew up with. Very delicious! Loved, loved the Brussels Sprouts. The service was great, a bit slow but we were in no hurry. I loved the purses hanging on the bathroom wall. I wonder if they would notice if I switched mine out for the pretty beaded bag? Maybe next time. Will definitely hit this place again, especially when I have a hankerin' for some mussels! read more
