This is the very sad end of an era. Cafe Bravo used to be known for some of the best, most affordable Middle Eastern food in Glendale - always packed, always fresh, always tasty off the charts. Sadly, the previous owner sold it not long ago, and the new management simply does not get it right. I gave it a few chances, but each time disappointed me to the point where I can no longer eat here. The kabobs are overcooked and under seasoned, they use regular yogurt instead of greek yogurt ( a sin!) and the food safety is unforgivable. The last time I was here, several employees were checking their phones during food handling (has that phone been in the bathroom?) and the main cook was picking his nose extensively and examining it right there in front of all the customers (!!!) No hand washing or gloves. Each visit, I requested my kabobs medium-rare several times while I ordered (even printed on the ticket) and they still made them well-done every single time. The cooks simply do not understand Middle Eastern food. The lettuce had rotten pieces in it, the Shirazi salad dressing is flavorless, the prices went up, and the list goes on. The food is consistently good and the price is great for how much food that you get. I most recently purchased the scharma chicken, and only the chicken. It still came with the bread. Great place cone here often. I usually get the steak or chicken kebob. Hummus on the side with shiraz salad. My girlfriend gets the Lula kebob, sometimes chicken and sometimes beef. She gets the ikra and yogurt, all around good food. We really line the multi select soda machine. Lots of options for everyone. This place gets busy so be prepared to wait for a table. The chicken kabab is good and cheap, but not near the best kabab I have had. The bean and corn side dish is really tasty! The hummus is mediocre at best :( They sell yogurt drinks here! Mmmmm! Their version of basmati rice is not the best either.... However, if you like buttery rice you will love it! They serve pita bread with your meal. This is a no frills place. They have interesting black and white portraits on the wall. I am not sure who the people are - maybe the founders of Cafe Bravo - who knows? They close fairly early but they are nice enough to not kick you out if you arrive late while they are closing! Street parking. There is an outdoor eating area. It was the 12th day into the year, and determined to keep my ongoing New Year's resolution to try at least one new thing a day it was time to give Armenian food a whirl. I didn't realize how much of it was things with which I was already well acquainted: shawarma, hummus, kabobs, and so on. I went with the words I didn't recognize off the top of my head: lule kabob with stolichnaya (chicken and potato) salad. The meal ($7) also came with hummus and a pita. Brandon D. got the beef shawarma, which I sampled. The flavoring was fairly different from what I'm used to. It definitely wasn't bad, just the spicing was almost sweeter. The hummus was a little more on the bitter side and didn't have as much of a lemon flavor as other hummuses (hummi?). The lule and rice were the hero dish for me. The ground beef lule kabobs, which reminded me of Lebanese kofta in flavor, were quite good and I would definitely recommend them. The dining area is pretty tight with Bran, Lee A., and me stuck in a corner while more and more families came in, having conversations in several different languages, as the room's thermostat was kept at 59 degrees (it was warmer outside, we discovered upon leaving). Quick tips! 1. A very slight parking issue, but you can park in the streets running adjacent to Cafe Bravo and in front of Cafe Bravo. I'm not sure if you're allowed to park in the lot that includes the KFC. 2. There are tons of things on their menu to try, for beginners I would suggest the Chicken Breast kabob plate with a side of Ikra (eggplant) and Hummus. For those who don't like chicken, try the standard beef kabob. 3. There are also vegetarian options and for the carb/calorie conscious every plate with rice can be substituted with garden salad. 4. I recommend the extra skewer option on most plates, not because you get more meat but because you can try something else! Feel free to mix and match on kabob plates. 5. For people who do order the salad, you can only add 1 skewer of meat! 6. Each a la carte order of meat comes with a pita! One of the things that is surprising to me is finding a new place that I cannot help but fall in love with. Cafe Bravo is exactly that! This place came very well recommended from my dad's coworker who lives in the area. Anyways, Cafe Bravo has a fast food vibe to it, but that is immediately defeated when you see that they are actually freshly grilling the kabobs right in front of you and also scooping up their sides. We've tried almost all the meats that they've got and most of them are phenomenal. Cafe Bravo's chicken breast is incredibly juicy even when confronted by the fact that chicken breast is usually a very dry cut of meat. Furthermore, there is tons of flavor that penetrates deep into the middle of the cut. The portion of the chicken breast is also really, really reasonable. They actually give you one skewer full of meat. Their chicken kabob, or their chicken thigh kabob, is not as great as their chicken breast. For myself, I love dark meat rather than white meat when it comes to chicken. As mentioned by the many reviews here, the beef kabobs are pretty phenomenal too. They are also bursting with flavor and incredibly tender. As noted by a friend who has reviewed this place, it seems suspect how tender the beef kabobs are as though they used an abnormal amount of meat tenderizer. Anyways, these kabobs are cooked usually medium to medium rare. Beware for those who are really into well done pieces of beet! We haven't had the chance to try the chicken shawarma, but we have had the chance to try the tri-tip beef shawarma. It is very flavorful, but some pieces can be a bit tough. One of the things that is awesome is the tahini sauce that comes with the shawarma. So intensely garlicky that I had a garlic overload, but an awesome compliment to the beef shawarma. Overall, I really recommend it! Lastly, among the meats, I've tried the Chicken and Beef lule kabobs. This kabob goes by various other names like kubideh. This kabob is extraordinarily juicy and can be best described as grilled meatballs. I recommend the beef lule over the chicken, because the beef just has a better and bolder flavor. The chicken lule is a little drier too. Unfortunately, I'm not as well versed in the many different (and surely delicious) sides that Bravo has. I can, however, recommend that you grab the Ikra or eggplant dip and hummus. The Ikra is a little more watery than normal and does include white onions, which is also a little different than how I've had it, but it still tastes great! The hummus, on the other hand, is very velvety smooth and one of the best I've ever had. I've tried their stuffed grape leaves--which are vegetarian--and I wasn't so impressed I couldn't complete this review without talking about the plate configurations. A kabob plate order includes rice, a pita, and the choice of two sides. On top of all of that, you can add one extra skewer of meat for the extra skewer price. When you order a shawarma plate, you get a choice between rice or garden salad, tahini sauce, and a side of hummus. You can substitute the tahini and hummus for a different side. Lastly, when you order a garden salad, you can add a skewer of meat. The salad comes with its own salad dressing, which I do not think is really that great. Lastly, the a la carte order or the "hidden" deal. If you order an a la carte kabob, they give you a pita for each a la carte order that you order. This means you could have lunch for as low as $4.00! In the restaurant, there are several sauces in the back including one of the new age touch screen soda machines with tons of different flavors/selections. You might wonder since I'm gushing why I've given this place only 4 stars. The service here can sometimes be a little poor. I've had orders that have certain things missing or had orders forgotten. Food is great at this place, especially the sandwiches which taste like heaven. Been eating here since the third day it opened. BUT, now that they have moved to the bigger location next door, some of their "managers' can't seem to handle the added pressure of more customers and treat people with no respect. A leader is suppose to be composed, well mannered and have common sense; all traits that the guy that I encountered today lacks. He was a younger guy wearing a navy blue shirt, hat and glasses and seemed like he was there to give people attitude instead of serve them. Before I placed my order, another customer and he had a conflict where he raised his voice and said "notice I'm not cooking in the kitchen" then proceeded to walk away from her. Then when I ordered, the really nice girl wasn't sure if she could split the order and asked him. He first ignored her. O. Her second attempt, he came by and without even listening to what I was saying, said "no the cooks don't have time to cut the kabob and place them on different plates." I am not upset at him not being able to do what I was asking him to do (even though it would have taken them less than 5 seconds to do it), I'm angry at the rude and disrespectful conduct of this guy. It's a relatively small place, with a few tables in the back and some smaller tables lining up towards wall of the cashier area. We ordered the Chicken Kabob and it was nicely cooked. The chicken wasn't dry and was actually flavorful. Garlic sauce costs $.50. Yeah, I know it's a small amount, but I really think that the first one should be free. They can charge more if you want extra garlic sauce. This place gets pretty busy so I would either come in during the off peak hours or take it to good. Cafe Bravo makes the best kabobs I've ever had. Their seasoning and grilling style just makes the meat so tender and flavorful! I like to get a healthier option, which is the Chicken Kabob Salad Plate, which just subs rice for salad. Their dressing (some kind of vinegarette) is delicious! I like to get the hummus and the shiraz (cucumber and tomato salad) for my two sides. The pita bread is fluffy, fresh, and tasty, too! The portions are filling, and the prices are great... my plate costs about $8, with the option of white meat. I'm sitting here eating a greek salad with lamb kabob from Cafe Bravo - it's delicious. I wouldn't exactly call it a greek salad though - it has black olives (vs. the standard kalamata) and is served on a bed of diced iceberg lettuce (I usually see mixed greens). I got it to go, so the generous portion of feta cheese is in it's own little compartment, alongside another one of diced tomatoes and cucumbers and a ridiculous stack of sliced white onion. The dressing is not the typical greek dressing (it's red and has fine bits of herbs in it) - but it's tasty. The lamb is definitely the highlight of the salad. 7 large pieces of juicy, perfectly cooked lamb - not tough at all and full of flavor. Fopr $12.97 I got the salad with lamb, a side of pickled turnips (I know, I'm sick) and a soda. Comes with two whole pitas (no hommos?) The decor is super-casual and the staff efficient and nice enough. It was hot and crowded inside though, which made me not want to eat in. read more

There must be a 'meeleeon' (pronounced with an armenian accent) kabob shops in Gdale but few are as tasty and as cheap as Cafe Bravo. The small "cafe", which once housed Ivan's Barber Shop where some of Hoover High School's finest athletes got there haircuts, is crammed between KFC and some sort of Chucky Cheese (sans pizza, scary talking animals and skeeball). Last week my buddy Dash and I sat down in Cafe Bravo's outdoor patio to enjoy yet another fine meal of skewered meats. We had: A chicken salad (chicken kabob on a bed of lettuce,tomatoes, cucumbers), one skewer of beef kabob (mit pita bread), a chicken kabab sandwich and a side of bean & corn salad and tabouleh. Beverages were of the normal canned variety...no glorious Orange Bang unfortunately. All this for about $18. My chicken kabob sandwich ($4.50) was quite delicious. The sub roll it came on was perfect (very important) and it was dressed with salmonella free tomatoes, cilantro(?) and mystery sauce (garlic?). Any of the kabob meats (chicken, steak, lule, etc) can be purchased in sandwich form. The beef kabob ($2.80) was also absolutely delicious...full of flavor and perfectly cooked. All in all one of my favorite spots in Gdale...mostly because I'm a poor man with a refined palate who likes to be able to eat outdoors sometimes. Having bounced around their menu and tried pretty much everything they make. I've settled on two recommendations for you: 1 - chicken breast kebab sandwich Their wrap is good, but the sandwich served in their Armenian baguette is amazing. The sandwich is loaded with marinated, fire-grilled chicken breast (best in town, seriously), tomatoes, and their garlic sauce then pressed and wrapped in paper. It's seriously awesome, very filling and only $5.30! 2- lentil soup they run out later in the afternoon, but if they have it when you're there, you gotta try it out. I love this soup. The meat tasted old, the inside of the place was dirty looking & filthy needs new renovations ASAP. The menu needs an upgrade, food is bland & disgusting. I don't know how this place is still alive after all these years on Glenoaks especially. pretty sad. i think its all the none Armenians that think this is the best kebab place ever because they don't dare to try the true authentic restaurants that are just a little more expensive but better in quality & cleanliness. For overall value, this is by far my favorite restaurant in all of L.A. Prior to moving to LA, I had never had "luleh" before. I'm still not exactly sure what it is but it tastes a lot like minced meat with spices. It is...heaven. I came across Cafe Bravo because I was working nearby on a project. Since then I have moved on and it's probably been about a year or so since I last ate there because I am located very far now. I have eaten at other restaurants serving the same meal but it is not even close. I am dedicated fan of their all of the "luleh" dishes and even the non-luleh meat dishes are amazing. I always get the dishes with a hummus and eggplant side and I have never tasted either of these dishes better in another restaurant. My favorite dish of all is the Cornish Hen. They manage to make the meat tasty and juicy and just...perfect...all for $8 or $9! Insane! I will also note that one of the best things about this restaurant is their rice. Being chinese makes me a rice eater and Cafe Bravo knows how to make rice. I don't know what they put in it but I hope they keep putting it in. (It probably makes the rice fatter but damn if I care!) Came here yesterday with Aileen V after shopping at Americana at the Brand and it was well worth the drive for me! I ordered the Lule kabob plate with tabbouleh and the yougurt with spinach. We also got a side of the hummas for free since he accidentally gave Aileen V. tabbouleh instead of hummus. The kabob was really good and moist and just plain delicious! The best part of the entire dish was the yougurt with spinach! It also comes with either rice or salad but of course I got it with the rice and a pita bread! The tabbouleh is also really good but the hummus I could pass next time. What also great about this place is their prices! They are pretty cheap for a Mediterranean place! I knocked 1 star down because the place is a bit small and a bit unclean. I didn't notice any grade on this place but if there was a grade, I know for sure it would be a C. Two stars only because of their consistently poor service. This place is very local for me. Been here prolly twenty times or so. This review is not based on a snap judgment. The food is excellent, when they aren't out of whatever it is I came for, which occurs with greater frequency as time goes on. The service tends to be " indifferent", for lack of a better word. One of their employees is hands-down the worst counter-person I've ever seen. It's often very busy, so I can understand the rudeness when staff tired and burnt-out, but when it's slow that kind of treatment is inexcusable. There is A LOT of local competition for middle eastern food, and at this point I'd rather go an extra mile to Zankou or Sevan where my business is appreciated, and the staff will at least make eye contact and acknowledge your patronage. Good food is only part of the equation. Train your staff to make eye contact and thank your customers when they come to pick up their orders. If they hate their job too much to do that, then fire them and hire someone else who will. Or at least take them off the counter so their bad attitudes don't drive away more business. read more

I've experienced much better from Cafe Bravo. Downgrading b/c the last several times I've ordered from there, the meat has been tough and dry. Like leather. It's a shame since I frequented and loved this place. read more
