The dutch pancakes are very good: crispy and well browned on the outer edges, and "al dente" on the inside. The espresso is good: I liked the macchiatto (See my photo) The green tea latte is very good: they use a green tea powder mix; I don't know which brand, but whatever it is, it's very good. It doesn't have the "metalic taste" of some green tea lattes; it's more gritty, in a good way. And the perfect amount of sweetness. read more

Terrible all around. Was looking for a local cafe. This one was dark, dingy, cluttered with limited seating. The almond milk chai was watery and scalding hot to the point the almond milk tasted bad. The croissant with ham and cheese smelled awful and the ham was rubbery and overcooked like it had been stuck in the microwave. The croissant was greasy and tasted microwaved. Threw it all away even though I was starving and went someplace else. Worst of all, the manager (Chester?) used a question about my disability as a conversation starter. The last thing I want while visiting the city and before my first cup of daily caffeine is to have to explain to a stranger what happened to me. He then seemed off put when I didn't respond to his question. AVOID. read more

This is my absolute favorite cafe in San Francisco. The aesthetic and vibe is super cozy and cute, greenery mixed with European street style motifs. Most cafes in the city go for a modern aesthetic that ends up feeling cold and distant, so it's refreshing to have a cafe like this that feels warm and comforting. On top of that, the owner Chester and his dog Tyler will make you feel right at home. Chester is friends with all his customers and remembers everyone's name. It's nice to feel like you have a local friend whenever you come here. The drinks are also delicious, I'd recommend the matcha with vanilla. Oh man this is a great little heavenly breakfast place!! This cafe is perfectly situated at the east and south corner so that you can get the most sunshine... and on this sunny Sunday morning me and my company were soaking in the sun after days of the tiring rain... Sitting at the cushioned sofa corner of the cafe, having my mouth-watering delicious cinnamon sugar dutch pancake (thin crusted edge crepe style, heaven!!!) with dark French coffee (you can ask for soy milk as they keep it in the fridge), while also forking into my friend's Van Gogh omelette (bell pepper, onion, avocado, replaced cream cheese with olive spread, and eggs with egg whites.) The deco is very Netherlands with lots of bright colours, high ceiling, even the bathroom where they also used as kinda a storage room impressed me :) What more can I ask for? Believe me...I REALLY wanted to enjoy this spot! I turned to Yelp to find a local, neighborhood cafe that wasn't your typical tourist joint- and with all of the great reviews, I thought this place would be a shoe-in. Sad to say, it wasn't so. Perhaps you need to be a regular to truly appreciate this place. My experience was BLEH! It was messy beyond messy and didn't feel clean at all. I don't know if the place is undergoing some redesign/interior decorating changes- but it looks like hoarders have come in and settled in 1/2 of the dining area....oh and there was a ladder sitting in front portion of the sitting area. WEIRD! Large food, drink and chip boxes sitting and balancing upon each other, old magazines and paper piled high, junk stacked upon junk. Serious clutter everywhere! They MUST be doing some serious spring cleaning....in the midst of winter, while all their guests pardon their literal dust. As far as the food: I wondered if they even had a full kitchen in back. Our food tasted microwaved and "toaster oven'd". In short- the food was nothing to brag about. I ordered: Chai Tea Latte- Must have been from a flavor packet. When I took my first few sips- I would get random "crunches/crumbs" in my mouth- perhaps the owner/manager didn't stir the packet in to dissolve the powder?? I dunno....but gross! My Nutella and Banana French toast was luke warm, toaster oven crunchy, and didn't taste like FRESH french toast. It LOOKED delicious when the gent delivered to the table though! Daniel's Omelet- the egg look like a scrambled egg mix that came fresh out of the microwave! It was perfect in shape, rubber texture and color. The soggy veggies inside were par for the omelet course- and the dish came out steaming and overly piping hot. Not complaining about the temperature- but further made me think it just came out of the microwave. The owner/manager was nice enough. Not rude- but certainly not pleasant, perhaps because he didn't know us- and we weren't regulars. Customer service doesn't appear to be their forte. A kind smile and thank you can go a long way in the service industry. It appears that he didn't care- didn't care about our experience or about the way his place looked. A little bit of pride in their service can really help this place out. All things considered, I may go back again in a couple months once the assumed spring cleaning and redecor takes place. It's very hodge-podgy and it appears the cafe is having an identity crisis....but perhaps that what gives it an artsy appeal. Vintage decor, some random "european" decor, random sports paraphernalia, dated things/pictures randomly taped around the place. Hey anything can be called "art"..... right? But someone I met recently recommended that I stay and eat breakfast there too because their food is yummy. So, my boyfriend and I ventured over there last Sunday and tried their "Dutch Smash" (also recommended): toasted large dark good-for-you bread slice topped with sauteed onions, slices of tomato, cheese and fried egg. Cafe Bean has always been a good breakfast/lunch/brunch spot to eat at or just hang out drinking coffee or Italian sodas. It's a cute little cafe with awesome baristas/waiter and the owner is always friendly. My favorite part of the cafe would be the window seating with the comfy comfy couch and huge pillows. When it's a sunny day, like recently, it's good to grab a seat outside and enjoy your breakfast/lunch outside in the sun with umbrellas over you so you won't feel burnt. Food wise, awesome selection of different options. You wouldn't get bored here. They always have specials on the board. Some menu items include bagels, baked goods (LOVE the almond croissant!), omelets, sandwiches, french toast, granola with fresh fruit, and Dutch pancakes!!!!! Some of my favorites are the Cody's omelet (chicken apple sausage, mushroom, onion, cheese $7.95), Dutch Smasher!! (two fried eggs, ham, tomato, onion on top of toast with cheese...yumm!! $7.50) my FAVORITE.. It is soooooo good!!! The pancakes are always crispy at the edges, just how I like em' and always perfectly pan fried! You could just taste the awesome buttery taste in every bite! This is the first place I had my first cup of coffee anything. They do yummy white mocha lattes, green tea lattes, and chai lattes. They also serve Italian soda of many different flavors. You're not welcome here if you access the internet from your own laptop. Or if you're over sixty. That's the impression I have of this place. Let me back up: I guess I should start out by saying the food is decent, ambiance is comfy, and that my first experience there was all-around pretty satisfying. I was ready to recommend this spot to all my wayward friends traveling through SF. So I did recommend the place: to my parents, who went there for breakfast the next day. Now, I'm not sure if the owner/cashier is a moody guy, or if he hates tourists (we're from the South Bay, but....whatever), or if he hates older people (which is what I suspect, seeing how my 26-year old self received amazing service), but from the story my folks gave me, he was incredibly rude this time around. Right off the bat, my dad requested an internet code when he placed his order. The guy would not give it to him, claiming he'd been there before and should have still had it. The man flashed the code in front my dad for a second and then put it away. My dad is a shy guy and won't question people, so he didn't challenge the owner--he just kept his laptop in his bag, even though that was the point of heading to the cafe. He never even got on the internet. After receiving their food, my parents, who are both in their sixties, asked if it'd be all right to move to a more spacious table that had just been vacated. The worker/cashier/owner (?) gave them a terse "I'm bussing this" and continued. That's pretty much the main theme of this review: my parents got major attitude here. My dad said he even tried to compliment that guy on the cafe, saying it was "reallly nice, great location, great menu." The owner said, and I quote, "yeah." He even interrupted their meal to tell them that they'd have to move if another customer came in. It's strange to me, having been there just the previous day and having had such a different experience. I even saw that same owner aiding a young pair of travelers with their route down to Los Angeles. Maybe he was in a bad mood today? Or maybe it's something else?... It shouldn't matter if you're young, old, a tourist, a local, or what -- you should be treated with some decency if you're gracing an establishment with your business. In fact, you really should be treated better than decent. My parents won't be returning to Cafe Bean. Neither will I. read more

Some days, when everything is going wrong, and the people I love most are either nowhere to be found or have let me down miserably, I just wish that Jill S could astrally project herself (or hop on a boring old plane) back here, so that we could sit in the cushiony softness of the big window seat at Cafe Bean, sip coffee and green tea lattes, and munch on macaroons. Running out of Splenda or caffeinated tea in the morning used to be a real disaster for me. I actually feel like I'm walking through water when I don't get my morning fix. Now that I've discovered Cafe Bean's vanilla almond tea, running out at home is no longer a problem. It's so much better than the bulk Lipton or store brand that I buy. We went into Café Bean, a coffeehouse in Nob Hill. I see this place all the time when I ride the 2 Clement or 3 Jackson Muni bus. We order a double espresso and a green tea latte. Yes, I said green tea latte. I don't see this drink too much on coffee menus. I found it be have a little bit too much milk, but my husband thought it was perfect. We both agreed this was delicious. Their double espresso did not have as much cream in the top of the cup, but the coffee itself was not bitter and ended up being good too. So...I walked up a couple of blocks and saw Cafe Bean at the corner. I waltzed inside and decided to go with an order completely un-D-Man-like. I ordered a single green-tea latte... ...there, I said it. Quite a funny view. Right there, on the table My bottle of Maalox and the GT-latte It was good. It took us some days to find THE cafe in San Francisco. We had a week of holidays, walked our feet off and took breakfast in different places every day. Then we went back one evening on Sutter street and saw the Bean - we decided to take breakfast there the next day. After the first visit we always came back, until the holidays were over. Cafe Bean is such an uncomplicated, quiet and nice place. The coffee is wonderful (we live in Vienna and we both love coffee, so I dare to judge), the sandwiches are as well and they prepare them any style you ask them. The place is clean and there is a lot to see on the walls and in the corners. But the best is the owner - he is not just friendly, he is really a joyful character and we had a lot of fun with him. Doused with ketchup (my move) and served with wheat toast (their move), it was exactly was I was looking for. Good Coffee. Good Food. Free Wi-Fi. No Electricity. I walked around the 'loin a while to find a good coffee shop to settle into to write a paper for school. I settled on Cafe Bean because it seemed large and inviting. Free wi-fi but no power. I was limited to my battery-life during my stay. The person working the counter even told me when I was looking for an outlet that they don't provide outlets for laptops. The coffee was very good. I'm not a Golden Cup coffee judge but I found the coffee pleasant. They give you a monster ceramic mug so you don't have to keep getting up. A pet peeve are coffee shops that charge 50-75 cents for a refill on top of a $1.85 for the initial cup and then pass you a 6-oz cup while I could have had a 16-oz to-go cup for the same price. I'd like to not add to the trash problems of the world and enjoy drinking from a real mug. Cafe Bean was very, very accommodating in that sense. I also had the lox plate. I like that Mediterranean-style breakfast of bagel or toast with olive tepenade, smoked salmon, cream cheese and veggies - spread out so you can pick at it however you want. It was a little pricey - about $8 - but I was sticking around for a while. When I refilled my coffee, I also had an excellent almond croissant. Quite tasty - not too sweet. This place used to be owned by the fabulous and sweet Bianca. It also used to be teeny tiny and on Post St. The newer location is bright (by San Francisco standards) and there is outdoor seating to. Tiny cafe bean made my trek to Muir woods very exciting.My friends and i got to this tiny cute place to get some breakfast to go. I got a cup of coffee and two mini oatmeal cookies which had some flaxseeds embedded on it;that's all i needed for the cookie to steal my heart!! My friends got yummy bagel sandwiches with eggs,and bacon and as we sat in the car and were munching on the food,i could hear my friends go hmmm yummm.yeah!! they enjoyed their sandwich and i enjoyed eating my oatmeal cookie like a chipmunk sipping coffee at the side. I LOVE my apartment! And one of the reasons is Cafe Bean right outside my front door! Coffee is my vice...and I'm ok with that! So I'm glad it's close by! The extras for the coffee are great! I love that they have an assortment of spices and sugars so you can customize your cup! But the greatest thing about Cafe Bean is that they serve the best breakfast. Came here in the late afternoon for two hours before dinner. The decor is quite nice but the customer service here is pretty darn crappy! - The cafe mocha I ordered a bit watery - I needed to use the bathroom so I walked over and saw that I didn't need a key so I went inside. I heard some kind of noise but didn't pay much attention to it. While I did my business in a span of 3 minutes I finally realize that the noise was from the sink. It was on and water was filling into a bucket. Then I heard a knock and then a series of very angry knocks on the door in less than a minute. I thought it was some kind of emergency so I opened the door before I got to wash my hands. There was this lady who then yelled at me saying, "Why would I go into the bathroom if I saw the sink was running?" I didn't want to argue so I walked away very pissed off. If I saw that then I wouldn't have used the bathroom and I would have needed to wash my hands after I was done so I would have turned off the sink eventually. And why would you use the sink in the bathroom to run errands for the cafe? A bit unsanitary don't you think? She didn't even apologize and even complained really loudly after I left the bathroom.
