DISAPPOINMENT. Every time I come here it's always something going wrong with my order. and at this point I will not be coming back or referring this restaurant to family or friends. See below for my most recent negative experience on February 18 1.) I called in my order a little after 11 AM. Café Abuja is the closest Nigerian restaurant to me so I typically end up ordering their tilapia pepper soup. After placing the order I got to the restaurant about 30 minutes later and was expecting my order to either be ready or almost ready since this is not the first time I have ordered the tilapia pepper soup from them. 2.). I pay for my food and have a seat to wait. I waited and waited and waited and this time it's nearing almost an hour since the time I placed in my order. I question of the ladies at the counter and stated that it's taking an hour for my pepper soup to come out. She didn't even respond 3.) I sat down to wait again and one of the other ladies at the counter comes around with my food and drops the bag on the table. Because I've had multiple negative experience with Cafe Abuja, I never leave there without first opening the bag and examining the contents of my food. To my dismay and astonishment, the weight of my pepper soup was very light and as I peer into the container I noticed only little bits of fish in the pepper soup, and at this point I'm very confused. 3.) I marched back over to the counter and said is this the tilapia pepper soup that I ordered? I was told yes and that they don't have whole tilapia today. At this point I am very angry. I question why they wouldn't tell me that when I ordered it, why it would take over an hour for this pepper soup to come out (especially if it's not even whole tilapia), and 3. why on earth they would charge the same price for this pepper soup and it is not even a whole FISH. I proceed to tell them that I need a refund, which they give me, and I quickly left. I have tried to give this restaurant multiple chances and they continue to disappoint and this time is the last straw. I will no longer be ordering food from Cafe Abuja and the next time and LAST TIME they will see me there is to use my free appetizer coupon that I have accumulated. It's very sad because I've seen the owner and he seems like a very nice person but the service here and the food quality especially in this scenario is just ridiculous. The silver lining is that I discovered Chez Michelle, and from now on will be going there to order my tilapia pepper soup. They only charge $12 and they give you plantain with the order compared to Café Abuja where you pay more and it doesn't even come with a side. read more

I've come to this restaurant a few times and the food is always on point. I will say I live about an hour away and I ordered my food via the yelp app and it said it was going to be a 70-80min wait. That was fine because it was going to take me that long to get there, but when I got there the meat pies I ordered weren't ready so I was offered something else. I waited 20min for the meat pies, and I was offered a free fish pie. :( In all the food is cooked to perfection! read more

Second time going to this restaurant and they haven't disappointed me yet. My favorite thing to get here is the Jollof rice plate (comes with spinach and a generous amount of plantain) and the Stewed Fish (Tilapia). I love that there jollof rice is spicy and the stewed very is filled with lots of flavor and it's a very huge piece of fish that they give you (I never finish it in one sitting lol). Delicious food and great ambience! I had my fav Jollof rice and Designer stew with beef. My only complaint, they DO NOT give you enough stew! I was expecting a generous serving of the stew itself because it's so delicious and it's just A stew and not the meat. I mix this with the Jollof rice and they are crazy good together. All in all, the menu is severely overpriced. It's upscale African seafood. You can definitely find great African food more reasonably priced. I live 10 minutes from this restaurant. I have been warned about it but after living in the area for almost 2 years, I decided to try it out. Lady who took my order was very impatient and pushy. I went to pick up my food around 9pm. Door was locked even though the sign says they open till 10pm. I kept knocking. Someone finally opened. I explained I had an order placed. She verified and let me in to pay and pick up. I asked about the early closure. She said they need to go home early. To add insult to injury, there were only 3 pieces of meat!!! This is definitely a very progressive Nigerian restaurant with a beautiful ambiance and great food. This little restaurant is about three minutes away from my house and my husband and I love to get the beef stew with rice and a side of plantains. The women in that kitchen really know how to spice up their food well because it is SPICY so beware if you've never had Nigerian stew before, if you have then this will definitely hit the spot. My only complaint is that some of the cashiers show that they don't want to be there when I get a take out order. I wouldn't call it being blatantly rude, but definitely uninterested and acting as though they can't be bothered to smile or provide good customer service just because they aren't serving you at a table. AVOID EATING HERE AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE!! I placed three orders with Cafe Abuja about a week ago. Before leaving and paying, I asked if the food was accurate because they have a history of mixing orders up. Biola or Bisola assured me it was accurate without displaying the orders to me before placing it in the bag, as is customary with customers to avoid any mishaps. As soon as I got home, I noticed they had made a mistake with one of my orders, so I called to inform them. I spoke with the lady who had placed my orders in the bags. She assured me that the next time I came in, they would give me a complimentary ogbono soup that had been mixed up. I said OK and even asked her, "Are you sure this is OK?" She said no problem because it was a mistake on their end. I said OK, and I also asked her if she could take care of it even if I didn't see her the day I decide to pick it up, She said it would not be a problem. I came into the store yesterday to pick up the food that I ordered as well as the complimentary soup that I was told to come in and get whenever I wanted. I met with the person in charge( pregnant lady) about the food and she said that there is nothing she can do, the only thing that she can offer me is snacks, I said no that was not what I was told, I was told that I could come in to pick up the complementary food that was missed on their part anytime and it would not be an issue. Then she changes the story to me picking up the soup while the girl who screwed my order is on the clock. I requested to speak with the business's manager or owner, but they told me they were unavailable, that there was nothing else they could do, and that this is what they told to do and say. The lady in charge is a complete jerk. She has no customer service skills and needs to be retrained on how to treat and communicate with customers. If she continues to speak to people in this manner, the business will suffer. Even though I was a regular customer, I vowed not to return after my experience. They were the only Nigerian restaurant I would order food from when I didn't feel like cooking or eating home food. This restaurant is basically like any other Nigerian establishment, with poor customer service and a lack of professionalism. At the end of the day, it's a matter of principle: if you say you're going to do something, do it; don't lie to a customer and then do something contradictory. They were all out of the beef meat pies and I was offered a drink instead which was allegedly the same price. But luckily for me some chicken meat pies became available after a short wait. I found this place last year some time and the first time I went the food was amazing. When you catch them on a good day you won't be disappointed but when I say WHEN I absolutely mean it. Like I said the first time was amazing but it's been down hill ever since. Cafe Abuja blew me out of the water in every sense of the word. It was one of the best meals I have had in ages. The food and atmosphere was as authentic as one can get here in the states. The food is great, but the customer service on the phone could do with a lot of improvement. As one who worked in the food service industry myself, I know how valuable customer service is to the food industry. Customers are to be treated as 'Gold' because they are the source of the whole businesses' revenue. Therefore, no customers = no business. It's as simple as that. My issue is how long it takes for one to place an order over the phone. Each time it takes about 30mins, after like 5 trials and being placed on a 10 minute hold with each attempt. If I could give this place zero stars, I would. I brought my family here a couple months ago from out of town. My aunt paid with her card. The next day, her account was charged 800 dollars online. We went to the manager and filed a complaint. He said he has never had such a complaint filed. Fast forward to yesterday. I foolishly used my card there last night, and this morning woke up to a 150 dollar charge at a Kroger gas station, while I'm at home in bed. I have filed a tip with the FBI and also contacted my local police department. I don't know why people think it's ok to steal someone's hard earned money. This food here is amazing. In the past, we dined at Lagos Island, where the quality of the food went down. Here at Café Abuja, I feel like I'm back home in Port Harcourt. This is my home away from home when my mother doesn't come to visit me and cook my favorite Nigerian cuisines. The portion size is ridiculous and plentiful! Literally the worst place I've ever been. Can I have a Diet Coke? She brings a coke and doesn't even realize the difference when I try to explain it. Her resolve, "we don't have Diet Coke," as it stares at me from inside the fridge behind the counter. Three orders, all messed up. How do you not get one single order correct? I ordered three things this afternoon. Amala and Ewedu soup. Pounded yam and Egusi soup, and Jellof rice. The Jellof rice was really good 8/10. Egusi was 5/10 . Ewedu 2/10. The Ewedu was served without stew. I asked and was informed they only give stew with rice. Ewedu is always served with stew.Their beaf comes on the side with a tablespoon of stew.
