They always have a sample of the Golden Bowl for anyone to taste & it's absolutely my go to dish. All the ingredients work well together in this Golden Bowl. The chicken, jollof rice, veggies, the sweet of the plantain with the spice in the curry makes for a delightfully seasoned bowl. I will admit the spice made my nose run but yet I would only describe it as a "subtle" spicy dish. One day I'll try another dish but for now. That golden bowl speaks to me everytime. Popped by after grabbing my FIFA volunteer gear. There was an employee out front providing samples of the golden bowl and hibiscus tea. That little taste had me sold. Takeout order of Golden Bowl (added shrimp along with the chicken) and small Hibiscus tea (40$ish). Packed neatly for your home/office enjoying pleasure. The motherland curry is placed in a separate plastic container and the jollof jambalaya, curry, plantains, chicken & shrimp packed tightly like a little gift. This place is deserving of its James Beard award. I got this at the Post food vendor market. I ordered the trad bowl. It came with smoked jollof jambalaya, chicken, thank veggies and stewed plantains. It was so good! The spices and herbs were very prominent and complemented all the food in the bowl. The chicken was very tender and seasoned very well! The staff was very nice and they have samples for you to try. I tried the motherland curry and it was very good! I'll have to come back to try the motherland or golden bowl. The atmoshere is very much a lively food court but with more neon lights and open light which makes for nice place to eat. read more

Their menu is quaint, and in fact, the famous Golden Bowl was not visible on the menu. Fortunately, the had a few signature dishes on display - the Golden Bowl was one of them. The Golden Bowl is one of the most complex and well balanced dishes I've ever had. Sweet, salty, smoky, spicy, and soulful, this dish is an explosion for flavors that will have your tongue tingling. The succulent grilled chicken, fluffy jollof jambalaya, stewed plantain and crunchy black eyed peas work together to create an unbelievable mix of textures that keep you excited for the next bite... and the next... and then suddenly it's gone. I heard so many great things about this restaurant that I had to put it on the itinerary (yes I am that girl lol) for my recent visit to Houston. Wowowowow! Came here for the first time last month and had a great experience! I had heard from friends this place was delicious so had to try it myself. Parking is quite easy. There's a parking gate directly in front of the place with ample parking. The system is set up to be paid online and is intuitive with great signage posted around as a reminder to "pay before you leave." You scan the code on your phone of your paid parking upon leaving the parking lot. To the food. I ordered the most common dish, the Golden bowl. Great suggestion by the lady at the register! Well...ChopnBlok is a WOW experience. I've frequented the POST location and am so happy there is now an actual restaurant. I've been with my girlfriends and introduced my brother when he took me out for my birthday. So far, I've tried the deviled eggs, the Motherland and the chopped salad, which is huge. I like that at the restaurant you can meds additional substitutions since the menu is more expensive than at POST. I've learned that black rice is incredible, and now I buy it ti cook at home. The curry sauces added to dishes here are delicious. Service is efficient. The servers are well versed in the cuisine and helpful in making decision. The energy is fantastic. GF got the Golden Bowl and I got the Trad. The curry from the golden bowl was absolutely delicious but rather very salty. My trad was perfect. The smokey jollof jambalaya was on the drier side but very flavorful. The chicken and assortment of vegetables were amazing. My favorite part of the dish were definitely the plantains. I would highly recommend getting an extra side of the plantains because they were out of this world DELICIOUS! Service was pleasant and food came out in a timely manner. 100% recommended! I'm not a big fan of peanuts in food so I wasn't a big fan of the curry. The jollof jambalaya confused my brain where I can't say I loved it but I kept eating it because it was tasty. Also liked it even more with the plantains in a bit of bites which I loved the plantains. I got extra shrimp and loved the way the shrimp was cooked and seasoned and nice and plump but the chicken left something to be desired and the grill marks seemed fake and more like frozen chicken then real grill marks. The veggies were tasty but I only got a little bit. I didn't finish it but I wasn't fully disappointed. Just new flavors for me. I would give this place a 4.5/5! Before we decided on this spot, they were giving out samples so my friend and I tried. Just from that, we knew we had to come back to ChopnBlock after exploring the upstairs area of the post. I ordered the Trad and my friend ordered the Motherland. I was just in heaven eating every bite- it was truly a flavor town experience. The chicken was tender and juicy, jollof rice was seasoned well, roasted vegetables were delightful, plantains were sweet, and the star of the show, the curry. Unfortunately, my friend's rice was a little undercooked but she was also blown away by how good the curry was. We ended up taking her leftovers home and microwaved it which helped with the issue. I will say, it's pretty expensive (the two dishes with tip was around a little over $40) but the quality of the ingredients and the taste of the dish makes it pretty worth it. In terms of service, the person serving the samples wasn't the most pleasant but I get that it's a Sunday night and she wanted to go home. ChopnBlok is located in the POST Market on the periphery of downtown Houston and stands out as a star in an otherwise crowded food court show. There is limited time on the lot for free parking so make sure to be efficient if you're not trying to pay for parking (I believe $5/hr after an hour on weekdays, or $5/hr after 20 minutes on weekends). A friend of mine mentioned ChopnBlok was mentioned in the Michelin Guide which peaked my interest given we're in a food hall but ultimately found out this actually wasn't the case. Regardless, they were handing out samples which hooked me immediately and I went in for the Golden Bowl with Chicken. Wow, the flavors, the balance, the creaminess, and the lightness - all mashed together for a delightful meal. I very rarely have options to West African food but would make this a monthly staple if we had these in Austin. Pricing for the food market is surprisingly high - maybe because rent in such a popular spot is not cheap, but overall the portion size will leave you feeling good. It wasn't until after the meal when I actually looked up if ChopnBlok was in the Michelin Guide and surprised that it wasn't on there. Frankly I wouldn't be surprised if they score a Bib Gourmand in future years - definitely a delightful culinary delight in a sea of strong food options. read more
