Efo Riro ( Spinach), Egusi soup, Pounded yam.
    Enaefe Z.

This has actually been my worst experience at a food establishment in a very long time. My friends and I came here for Sunday lunch as we had heard good things about it. When we arrived, it was open seating. The space was small but it wasn't busy (just one table with four people) so there were plenty of open seats. We were three so we sat down. There was no menu in sight and no one had come to welcome us so we sat for a while. I decided to look at the menu online as I was pretty hungry. After about 10 minutes of waiting, a lady brought us three menus. Two of the three menus had corrected prices with tape over them, which was fine (inflation, duh?!). My friend and I wanted half efo and half eguisi. We asked the lady if that was possible, she said no. We then decided to get one efo and one eguisi to share both and then the lady said if we ordered it as two dishes, she could plate it as half and half, which was fine, not a big deal. Here is where the problem starts. My other friend asks for Abula (Amala) and she said she had no assorted meat. When asked what she has, she said only beef and turkey. She also told us that had ordered the efo and eguisi that she only had beef, turkey and fish at this point. She stated she was out of any assorted meat. My friend ordering the amala asked about three other dishes that the lady mentioned was out of stock. She eventually ordered the amala. My friend then asks to order fried yam and the lady proceed to mention and I quote 'I do not have time for that.' I promise you, we were too stunned to speak. When she saw us gasp, she mentioned she can make it but it will come after the food. My friend really wanted fried yam so she said it was fine if it came after the food. The lady at this point was extremely rude and short. She then mentioned that the yam was $10.99. On the tape corrected menu, the price of yam wasn't updated and was listed at $5.99. My friend declined the yam after finding out the price discrepancy. We waited for about 30 minutes. The lady brought out two plates of pounded yam and half efo, half eguisi. She then proceeded to tell my friend that ordered the amala that she did not have the stew and that she can give my friend yam porridge and it's nice that she will like it. At this point tbh, we were too stunned to speak. My friend who didn't get her food told her it was fine and she wasn't going to eat anything as she does not eat or like yam porridge. The lady insisted and said if she doesn't like the yam porridge that she doesn't have to pay for it. Again, my friend declined and said she did not want it. This lady tells my friend 'You know what, since I did not have what you ordered, I'll bring the yam porridge for free.' We didn't say anything since my friend had told her three times that she did not want a replacement and that she doesn't eat porridge. This lady proceeds to bring out the porridge and sets it in front of my friend. At this point, we start eating. The food was about a 2/5. We ordered turkey and beef and only got beef. The beef was inedible because it was too salty. Since my friend who ordered the amala doesn't eat porridge, my other friend and I tasted the porridge. It was good but drenched in oil. We ate less than half of our food. The lady brings the payment system and says the total amount. Turns out she charged us for the porridge that was forced on my friend on the premise of it being free. After we asked why she did that, she took it off the bill and since we were highly irritated, she offered us puff puff which we declined. I understand that she was the only one working the kitchen, serving and attending to customers. However, this model obviously affects her ability to communicate respectfully to customers, keep up with inventory and provide good quality food and value for customer's money, which is not beneficial to any business in the long run. I will not be returning.

The beef was really tough but the chicken was great and so was the Jollof. The service was good and the restaurant was clean when I went there.

They always have a sample of the Golden Bowl for anyone to taste & it's absolutely my go to dish. All the ingredients work well together in this Golden Bowl. The chicken, jollof rice, veggies, the sweet of the plantain with the spice in the curry makes for a delightfully seasoned bowl. I will admit the spice made my nose run but yet I would only describe it as a "subtle" spicy dish. One day I'll try another dish but for now. That golden bowl speaks to me everytime. I had leftovers & even the next day my taste buds got happy all over again! Never had Nigerian West African food or had it somewhere else, try it here, it's delightful!! Dish was enough for two meals; super flavorful. I'd definitely like to try them again not on a go.

We ended up getting a side of jollof rice because the goat meat plate did not come with any sides. I will definitely be back if I am on that side of town again. The four stars are because I wish they adjusted the spice levels. I like my food spicy and Bae who is Yoruba's spice level is not for this world! so the food wasn't as spicy to both of us as we would've liked. The fufu with egusi soup was super delicious with a spicy kick that I loved (7/10) . The plate was the star of the meal. Everything from the stewed hen, to the rice, to the greens were all so well seasoned and I truly enjoyed every bite (8.5/10). The meat pie was also delicious with a savory filling and the pastry was thick and buttery but surprisingly not overbearing considering the pastry to filling ratio (8/10). Overall the food was awesome and seemed quite authentic. Would definitely come back to support this small local business!

Overall, I found the food to be very flavorful, well seasoned, and unique. My daughter and I actually ended up liking each other's meals more than our own, so we switched plates, which worked out well. We also ordered a few extra items, including wings and yams. The pounded yam was interesting and very different from anything I usually eat. It is probably not something I would go out of my way to order again, but I am glad I tried it and now understand a little better how it is eaten. The one disappointing part of the visit was the ordering experience. The young man who rang us up was polite, but he was unable to make any recommendations. He said he had been working there for about three months and still could not really suggest what to order. For someone like me, who is unfamiliar with this type of food, recommendations would have been very helpful. I would have appreciated some guidance on the most popular dishes, common choices, or what first-time customers usually enjoy. That said, the owner was extremely kind. She came out to our table, spoke with us, and helped explain how to eat some of the food we had ordered. I really appreciated that. She came across as a very sweet person, and based on her hospitality alone, I would come back to support the business. This style of food may not personally be my cup of tea or something I will crave often, but I respect the flavor, the care, and the local business behind it. I would give Bantu House four stars. It could have been closer to 3.5 for me personally, mostly because of the lack of ordering guidance, but the owner's kindness and the quality of the food pushed it to four.

I walked into the clean, chilled ambiance building and felt completely lost. I had no idea that it's a contactless experience. The order must be placed electronically prior to arriving or at a kiosk upon arrival. Once you've placed your order and paid for it, you take a seat and wait to be notified via text message. When your food is ready, your text message will direct you to a locker number which will go to and unlock by clicking on a link provided in your text message. Thankfully, there was a kind Harris County Deputy who was also visiting for the first time and patiently worked with me to make sure I was able to place my order. I think the concept is innovative here in the U.S. (been going on in Asian countries) and could really take off. However, there should be available signs with directives posted both outside and inside of the building. The food was just as delicious as it was the first time. Please don't let the negative reviews deter you from giving this restaurant a try.

Then there's the stuff you get plenty of in any city: pizza, chinese, sandwiches, chicken places, etc. But a real rare gem is ChopnBlok. It's West African cuisine, which is not exactly something you see on every street corner. But more importantly, this food is clearly made with love. It's not cheap: a couple of bowls and a tea comes out to nearly $100 after tip, but you're paying for real quality here. My dad and I both ordered a Golden Bowl and added steak. The steak was the best part. It had this amazing smokey flavor that made me wish I just ordered double steak instead of steak as an add on. I initially visited the ChopnBlok in POST, and was blown away with the flavors, so I've always wanted to come back and try their stand alone spot. If you're a person greatly adverse to spice, just be aware that there are some subtle hints of a kick in this dish, but I found it to be just the right amount: it let you know that it was there, but stayed in its lane.
