I came here for lunch on a rainy Saturday in early November 2023 as it was very close to a store we were going to later that afternoon. We arrived shortly after 12 and the café was fairly quiet, with just a few diners. We were quickly seated by a server who was very efficient throughout our meal. The café has a large menu, including breakfast/brunch items as well as all-day fare (breakfast was no longer being served by noon). There were some typically French classics such as steak tartare and croque-monsieurs. The seasonal special at the time of our visit was the tartiflette, which the server emphasized to us was homemade. We wound up ordering the tartare and the tartiflette, both of which were served with a side salad. My boyfriend was very satisfied with his tartare. I had never had a tartiflette before but it was very rich and creamy as I'd expected, although maybe not my usual taste. My boyfriend (who is French) said it was a well-made tartiflette although maybe not the best he'd ever had. For dessert I got a café au lait viennois which was served with a small madeleine cake. The presentation of the drink was beautiful and would definitely be something great to order to impress a visiting tourist. It was also very tasty and perfect for the rainy weather. The café had a very typically " Parisian " brasserie vibe, with wicker chairs, dressed up waiters and a bonus view of the Madeleine across the street. The prices were quite high as it's in the center of Paris ; each of our main courses ran us just under 20€ for pretty average fare and hot drinks were around 6€-9€ each. My boyfriend's 25 cl Carlsberg was 6,90€. I would recommend coming here for a quick bite and/or a drink if you're in the area and are not expecting something too special, but want a Parisian brasserie experience. read more

Minus 1 star for water that is 33cl costing €6.20 each! Rip off!! Let's be clear. This is somewhat a tourist trap restaurant. Located quite near the opera house (but really far enough away to be such a pushy rip off), there's a big menu outside for your attention, and the waiter will come running out to call you and wave you into the restaurant. They have mastered this tactic! We literally just landed that morning and were not as on guard as we normally are and absentmindedly went in. Honestly, the food isn't even very French; it was more American. We ended up with a club sandwich and a salmon bagel, food that we could have gotten back home but we were too tired to get up and leave. The food was ok, not great, not cheap either. The service was ok, just the type where they take your order, deliver the food, and you never see them again. The worst rip-off is the water at €6.20 each for just 33cl. RIDICULOUS. Oh, guess what - the menu does NOT have drink prices. That's how they cheat you! Ask for table water if you're eating there. No other place we ate at, even much nicer restaurants charged that high. read more

I am walking around Paris and decide to stop for a drink. My beer is delicious, especially as the day was getting warmer. The tables outside have a good view into the Opera and the busy street with people walking at a fast pace. I had a specialty coffee, which was overpriced and just OK. Service was friendly and fast. Most waiters speak English. Overall a good spot to grab a bite and a drink, just be careful about the price of what you are ordering. read more

I had a happy time here this evening. It was my intention to get there earlier today, for breakfast, but that didn't happen. I still made it, because it is in a convenient location, and I like the sidewalk atmosphere. I sat down to a happy waiter. As I sat, I noticed all the servers were pretty happy. That helped to brighten up my evening. I asked for water, no gas. I was asked if that's all I wanted or if I planned on ordering food. It's an odd question to me, but maybe they get people like that. It seemed like he wanted to tell me something if I was not going to be ordering food. However, I was. The menu looked great. It made me wish I could have breakfast there. However, it was dinner time. There is a last page to the menu, which basically lists the fish, meat, salad, soup, et cetera of the day. But there are no descriptions. You have to ask the server. I'm accustomed to the server telling me what the special of the day is, not having to ask. Upon asking however, I chose the hamburger of the day: a New York steak burger. When my meal came out, it was excellent. The burger could have been tastier with some seasoning, but the rest of it was excellent. The service was good. The people watching was good. Thank God for the wind that blew people's smoke the other way, so I could enjoy myself. All-in-all, worth coming back. read more

Just walking by the food looked good so we sat down. The waiter seemed bothered with us and we told him we had a bottle of water and wanted to drink it and I got a coke. He said we cannot drink our own water. Next just ordered a burger and said well done. It came quick but was the wrong burger with bacon and it saw raw. He didn't check on us for a while and so we just ate the overly salty fries and got the check and left. Yes waiters seem very busy but they speak English and remembered our orders without writing anything down. Good option if youre around the Gare Lazare area. I was at the end of my Paris trip and was exhausted so I let my guard down. This cafe was convenient as I was leaving Mass at L'église de la Madeleine. I failed to check the reviews and cost beforehand. If money is a concern for you don't make the same mistake as me. I don't know if this is a tourist trap or just because it's upscale, but this was the first restaurant that I'd been to all week that didn't assume when I asked for water, I meant free water, or at least pose the question. I paid 6€40 for a bottle of Evian. My small glass of orange juice was 7€, but it was delicious and had ice which is a rarity in Paris, but gave me less juice. I had an omelette with potatoes and french fries. My friend had a Nutella crepe and the tiniest coffee I've ever seen! For a total cost of 38€50 Our server seemed disgusted to have to serve 2 American plebeians not fluent in French. Can't wait to be back in the USA for some Cracker Barrel! read more

This is my favorite place for an early breakfast in this area. We were staying at a nearby hotel and jetlag had us up at 7am each morning. Enter the casual Cafe Madeleine and their €9 breakfast of baguette, croissant, butter, jam, and cappuccino. We sat outdoors and took our time- it was wonderful and the waitstaff was so friendly. A heads up to Americans: the service here may appear slower than what you are used to, but that's how many cafes in France operate - this is about leisure and relaxation. You can tell your waiter if you are in a rush but otherwise be prepared to have a slower meal- which we loved! All in all, great baguettes and coffee, lovely waitstaff. read more

We were staying right next door at the Madeleine hotel plaza (lovely hotel FYI) and we arrived our first day in Paris and while waiting for our room came here for breakfast. Coffee and pastries which were good. We sat outside - it was truly lovely. Price was 19 euro - not horrible. After a few days in Paris we came in for 2 coffees and a lemon tart and a scoop of ice cream. 36 euro!!!! The coffee we like 9 bucks each. Crazy!! During our visit to Paris, we are at Cafe Madeleine several times. We were always greeted by friendly staff and the food was delightful. Our favourites were the Grand Nord salad and the French Onion Soup. Great food and great people! A little pricey due to the location but worth it. Would highly recommend. Given the red/black decor was ripped right from 1970, I had extremely low expectations in the flavor dept - but our omelettes actually had wild shrooms in them and the french bread was crusty/doughy deliciousness - I was suitably pleased with my meal. Would never go out of my way to rec this place to anyone, but an innocuous choice for a meal - can get omelettes, quiche, burgers, salads, proper entrees, and pastry snacks. Around 1p, was packed with those doing dejeuner and those there to sip coffee, nibble croissants, and people watch. Word to the wise, definitely skip dessert as the apple galette was straight from some warehouse's freezer section. Lunch of two omelettes, teas, and a dessert was $60, which is outrageous for the very standard fare - and weirdly, it's not tres chere b/c it's like an undergroup Hard Rock Cafe Paris or anything touristy like that - we were surrounded by locals, adding to my confusion over the prices. read more

Prices were a bit expensive for just bread, but hey- that's Europe. If paid by card, they will bring the machine to you. My friend and stopped here for some post-shopping/pre-dinner drinks. We sat on the terrace on a beautiful summer afternoon. In addition to two cocktails, my friend and I shared a lemon tart topped with meringue. It was very good and sweet, but not too sweet. I had a bit of a headache from the previous night, so I had a vodka cranberry, with extra cranberry juice. The waiter was kind enough to bring out a small pitcher of juice for me. Lunch, drinks, breakfast, coffee, cappuccino, a snack - Cafe Madeleine is a good solid place to stop for a bite or drink if you're in the neighborhood and want to take a break. Keep in mind, prices here are as high as the Eiffel tower and service is as slow as a tortoise. That said, this place isn't alone in its execution of dining al fresco. This was my first breakfast in Paris after being on a plane all night and up for about 30 hours straight. My recollection may not be the best, but it was an enjoyable little spot, the food was well prepared and the prices in line with anywhere else. It is on a busy corner, so there is lots to look at and the wait staff was a little pushy, but better than other places I have been. We had crepes and some meats and cheeses which were all ok.
