I've tried a few more things over the years and I do enjoy Cadeaux very much. Memorable: Double Baked Almond Croissant (5.95)- Almond creme and the break of the croissant is very satisfying. Their style isn't delicate buttery, more like crunchy flaky with creamy almond cream. Very very nice. Fruit and Custard Danish (5.50) Middle fruit bit and laminated bread ratio- very nice. Second place we tried for Hot Chocolate Festival was at Cadeaux Bakery. Based on the name, we assumed it's French but it was the least French feeling bakery I've been to. We dropped in on a Sunday afternoon (around 1:00pm) to find it busy. The bakery is roomy but oddly, there's only 5 tables inside to sit at. Order at the counter and they'll call your name/order around the corner. There's a few display cases of pastries (croissants, quiche, brownies, scones and cookies) and cakes. Of course, there's also drinks. The matcha blueberry croissant ($6.90) sounded good but holy eff, that's expensive. Made to order cakes are $39.00 (6") to $125.00 (12"). - Cocoanut ($6.50) - coconut milk-based, passionfruit dark hot chocolate. This came with a passionfruit cheery pâté de fruit (not too sweet). The drink had a good note of passionfruit. - Mum's apple pie ($6.50) - caramelized white chocolate and apple compote blended together with steamed milk. It came with a pie crust snacking bar. K didn't like the bar and found the drink too sweet (she didn't even finish her cup). The chunks of apples inside the drink was interesting. - London fog cake slice ($6.60) - a good variety of layers inside the cake (the chocolate layer was the best part). The cake itself was a tad on the dry side but we liked that it wasn't too sweet. We agreed that it could have had a bolder London fog flavour. Trafiq's version is better. Decent fare at Cadeaux but nothing that would make me want to come back pronto. read more

The first time I had the London fog cake from cadeaux I was hooked. It has all the right layers and texture combination in one bite, but it doesn't feel heavy at all. Even after eating a whole slice. The outside is enveloped with a light coat of chantilly cream, which keeps the cake moist. Over the years I've had their London fog cake for my birthdays and many other occasions. It remains one of my favourite cakes in the city. The shop itself is not very big, but they do have some seating inside. They have an industrial feel inside but also a lot of white paint to keep it clean and light. They are just beside the number 5 orange in the downtown east side, which is not very visible but definitely worth the trek. There's lot of street parking outside too, and I have always got a parking spot each time I visited them. Another favourite of mine that they make is the bacon cheddar cheese scone. It's super flakey, soft and packed with flavour. I always put it in the toaster oven for a few minutes after I get it home and it's as good as fresh out of the oven at the bakery. Wow, wow and wow. The Black Tie cake was one of the best cakes that we've ever had. I'm not sure which butter they use but its so natural and smooth, similar to French butter. The vanilla buttercream and chocolate ganache was so rich and decadent yet not overly sweet, how we prefer. We ordered the larger size for 8 people and still had leftovers which is just fine with us. We also tried their plain croissant which was top rated for us and had that beautiful butter flavor. This is my go to bakery from the time I found it . I have tried almost all the cakes and pastries and love all of them. The staff is super friendly. My favourite cake is chocolate cake with coconut. It's awesome. I could only try cakes which are available by the slice :(. They had limited variety of croissant, ruby berry Eton mess, which tasted really good. I have never been disappointed by any item at this bakery. I just hope they had some breakfast sandwiches too in their menu, as it would be awesome. read more

Had the London Fog cake for Christmas and it was soooo good. I'm not a huge cake person but this is definitely one of the best cakes I've had--moist vanilla cake with lovely chocolate earl grey ganache and sweet whipped cream layers. It was sweet but not cloyingly so, and the crumb wasn't too dense or too airy, a perfect texture. The only thing I didn't care for was the buttercream finish--it added nothing, was bland and very waxy. However, it's optional. Checked out hot chocolate festival 2020 at cadeau bakery and really loved their milk tea inspiration! Inspired by milk tea addiction, jasmine-infused, milk hot chocolate with grass jelly. Served with a pandan pistachio sable cookie. The hot chocolate was very light and yet rich in flavour and just the way I like it. I loved how the little cubes of grass jelly gave it a nice texture for this hot chocolate and it floated to the top so you don't need a straw or spoon to eat it. Ughhh!! I'm so mad they didn't have their highly popular London Fog Cake!!! They must run out quick obviously. It's ok because my substitute for it was their pecan tart slice. I thought it was just alright. It tasted like my moms egg pie but with pecans. For $3.75 it was a bit pricey for what it is but it's still tasty. This bakery is great with a nice decor and atmosphere. It's like walking into another pastry boutique. There could be more seating and there should be a water stand somewhere for guests. I also think their employees should be a bit happier rather than down and boring lol idk it just would help with the whole situation. They could also do a better job with helping with picking out another alternative if something were to run out. I didn't get much help. This is a good place for a small sweet treat after a meal. Here is a list of what I've tried over the years (can't believe I haven't raved about this place yet!): Earl grey cake- Best in the city. Hands down. If you like an earl grey cake with a strong taste of tea, this is the place for you. Having tried a lot of earl grey cakes (it's my absolute favourite!), this is my favourite place to take friends from out of town. The sponge is soft and moist too! Vanilla shortbread - A soft buttery shortbread laced with vanilla throughout....and melts like a dream in your mouth. A must have. Raspberry Choocolate - This cake is so well balanced. The tartness of the raspberry really cuts through the creamy sweetness of the chocolate. Chocolate sponge is moist and supports the other creamy textures quite well. Carrot Cake- I don't like carrot cake; I find it heavy and overly rich. But I like this one. The cream cheese frosting is delicious. The carrot cake itself is not overly sweet. I suspect they use less sugar since it would already be sweet from the carrots...always a favourite as well! Compared to their other cakes, this one is definitely a bit heavier, but still absolutely delicious! It actually took me a while to find this bakery because the google maps location on my phone is a bit off so I wandered around a bit until I finally found it on the way back to my office. (I had already given up trying to find it) I found the bakery very interesting, as the kitchen was completely open and the pastry chefs were all dressed very casually and chatting away. The atmosphere was very relaxed and I was ready to try some pastries! At first, I planned on getting two, but after finding out how gigantic the ham & cheese croissant was, I decided on just having that for lunch. This pastry was massive! It actually took me a while to finish but in the end, I felt that the croissant was just a bit better than a grocery store-bought pastry and was not anything special. I love obscure cafes. I would've never found this place if it weren't for my foodie friend Andrea P. I instantly loved this spot with it's whitewashed walls and furniture, shabby chic decor, mirrored menu and beautifully decorated cakes and goodies. I'm not usually one to eat a lot of icing but if you can, best advice for this cake - GET THE END PIECE! One bite of this cake and you'll understand why. I took my first bite and I was taken to a foggy dreaminess of Earl Grey and cake in my mouth. A lot of the earl grey flavour came from the icing, hence... GET THE END PIECE! But if you aren't that lucky ducky, the cake is still amazing - especially if you love london fog as much as me! The cake wasn't as moist as I liked but the icing added the moistness it needed. This cake was a perfect balance of lightness yet enough richness to satisfy your taste-buds. Friendly and helpful staff, and impressive facility, but alas cake was just awful. I ordered a custom cake for my fiancé's birthday. I don't know much about cake, so I mentioned that up front. I asked for a Mocha Dacquoise, and the lady (chef?) I was emailing was helpful and patient, and suggested a combination. I also had a specific design I needed for the cake. It's possible my description lead her astray, but we did not like the cake. The design was pretty spot-on, but the textures and flavours were unpleasant: The frosting (a mocha butter-cream) felt like eating a stick of butter, and its flavour was overwhelming. The cake itself (a sponge cake) was supposed to taste like hazelnut, but even when digging some out from under the frosting and ganache, it didn't taste like anything. And it was the same for the chocolate ganache. The texture of the ganache was good, but the sponge cake felt like Styrofoam. A beautiful little spot tucked away at the edges of "respectable" Gastown, Cadeaux is mostly a working kitchen and a counter featuring the daily spread, but there are a few places to sit down, and if you can manage to snag one it's a great place to sit and have a leisurely coffee or tea and chat with a friend. The London Fog cake is hands down my favourite item here. A vanilla layered cake, the hint of bergamot is truly evocative of a warm tea latte, and the whipped frosting is not too heavy - it's like the foam on top of that latte. It's still a super-rich, decadent treat, but you won't feel heavy and weighed down after eating it - just totally, completely satisfied. On our visit today my fella had the Bacon Swirl - a cinnamon twist featuring bacon. Now THAT was rich - and S. remarked that he couldn't actually taste the bacon, as opposed to say, the Maple Bacon Fritter at 49th Parallel/Lucky's Donuts. It was definitely there, but the buttery pastry and the cinnamon really overpowered any accent the bacon could have provided. The only reason this place doesn't get a 5 stars from me is the lack of sit-down seating, the limited range of take-home treats, and the fact that the coffee is not as great as it could/should be to accompany such sweet treats. A friend suggested that I try Cadeaux (French for gifts) Bakery... On Thursday my friend and I made a trip to Costco in Burnaby. It must be the early Christmas rush because I swear we drove around the parking lot for 10 minutes without finding a parking spot. Unable to find a parking spot we left vowing to come back Monday. After leaving Costco I suggested that we try out Cadeaux Bakery. I betcha the rent at Cadeaux is pretty cheap! Though not really in, but Cadeaux is around the boarder of the seedy side of town. Appearance wise I would consider this shop to be "cute". They do serve coffee and there are about 4 small tables to eat in, but I think this shop relies on people coming in, ordering, and taking out. I ordered a London Fog cake ($5.99). I found it a bit pricy, but the piece of cake was very large. I'm sure 2 people could share it comfortably. Cadeaux has about 4 people working in the back... baking away... I thought it's kind of cool that the store is so open and we can look right into the "kitchen" and see them busily baking a way. My friend ordered a chocolate tart. He said it was ok.... Nothing too special.... I really liked my London Fog cake! I had a coffee so the overabundance of sweet was tapered by the bitterness of my coffee. A good balance. One observation I did make is that there is not a wide selection of baked goods. Several tables to enjoy your coffee and adorable decor. I love when pastry is displayed nicely it makes me want to buy them all. But when I come to a new place / bakery and they have almond croissant that's my go to! I also grabbed a latte for here and a regular croissant to go (for my husband). My friend and I had our pastries and coffee to stay and we hang out for about an hour and no one else had their food and coffee to stay which was nice, we had our private little cafe. I guess it was Sunday people grab their pastries and coffees to go. We saw a lot of cakes being beautifully decorated. They also had plenty of ready fresh baked goods like cinnamon swirl, scones, cookies, and more. And I have add the regular croissants were enormous compared to others I've seen in the city. And prices were also pretty decent. Ok so I always have to judge my almond croissant, it was good, buttery, nice outside crunch and soft middle. It did not disappoint! The location is on the edge of Gastown, and if your a local you sometimes question whether or not you should venture off to the section. Small quiet, no sign. It's easy to miss this out of the way place. Inside is a busy bakery with a small space at the front with four tables. The staff is friendly but you almost feel like the focus of the place is being a serious bakery, not a cafe with awesome baked goods. The beautiful displays suggest that a custom cake ordered from here would be seriously appreciated by the recipient (Cadeaux means gifts) and foodie guests. The croissant my friend ordered was really the best. I had a wonderful not too sweet chocolate banana bread pudding type thing that I liked very much. I'm afraid to come back since I'm concerned about bakery addiction and this place is dangerously close to home. We ordered two Americanos and they were ok, not bad - the yummy treats made up for it. The first time I came in, I had a really good one so I'm thinking the quality between baristas could improve. came by with a friend after seeing their delicious baked goods on instagram all the time and although it was a cute space and nice for chatting, the london fog cake did not live up to our expectations. my friend (also a food lover) thought the cake itself was lacking any moisture and not very special. in my opinion, i like drier cakes as it feels less dense but i agree that it didn't have a huge earl grey flavour. we did appreciate that the buttercream was light and fluffy and that the cake wasn't too sweet but it lacked oomph. i would like to give it another try one day but for now, there are many other cakes my tastebuds are looking for. read more

I ordered the London Fog cake for an event. The bakery was able to accommodate my order within 24hours which was such a relief. I found the location easily with plenty of parking on both sides of the street. The cake presented beautifully!! Decorated very classically. The icing was not too sweet at all. The sponge was perfectly bouncy and Moist. Everyone throughly enjoyed. This is my go-to place for cakes. read more
