    Knock Knock Children's Museum

We were visiting Baton Rouge over the holidays and this was recommended to us for our 6 year old…read more It was AMAZING!! We had a blast from the moment we walked into this two story museum of fun! We especially enjoyed the dance room, the arts room, the vet office, and the grocery store. So many fun opportunities for learning and only $15 per person - a great way to spend hours for very little money. Also appreciate that they don't let in adults who are not accompanying children - a nice safety check! Everything was clean, fresh, and the staff were all so friendly! Definitely recommend to anyone w young children!

There are activities on the first and second floor. There are things to do and see and get dirty and get all hands on, both inside and outside. The staff are so friendly. The ones who are working in certain hands on areas are very good about maintaining clean working environments not just for themselves, but for the children as well. You have everything from stem learning areas to the artist garden, and the pelican pottery area. There is an area where kids learn about bubbles and the Girl Scouts had an event today where they were learning about the solar system. There is just so much for kids to see and do here. Admission is $15 but I can tell you, it is worth absolutely every penny. If I lived any closer, I would easily pay the $100 for the membership. That would be entirely worth it. There is this one structure that looks like a bunch of piled up both open and closed books. It is actually a climbing structure for the kids. It extends from the base floor all the way up to the second floor, which is the main level. It is quite a sight to see your child hook their head up from the structure up and over the guard rails on the second floor. The kids here were so friendly. They were very friendly and no one was pushy. The parents are also allowed to climb on the structure. That was pretty cool. I don't know about you, but I don't trust my knees. I would rather not slide or fall off anything that I really shouldn't have had any business climbing up all over on anyway. We met some really great people here. We had such an amazing & lovely time here!

    Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana

    Coalition To Restore Coastal Louisiana

Ever since reading the book "Bayou Farewell" by Mike Tidwell I've been concerned about the state of…read morethe shrinking coastline in Louisiana. Hurricanes, misguided land use and development all take their toll on the wetlands and barrier shoreline, causing land loss on this beautiful coast at an alarming rate. The southeast Louisiana coastline is now the fastest disappearing landmass on earth, with an estimated 600,000 acre loss predicted within the next 50 years. That's not only bad news for the fishermen and women who make their livings here, but could be catrastrophic for the birds who make the barrier islands their first stop on the migratory route every year. The wetlands and barrier islands also protect the gas and oil drilling infrastucture that are now such an integral part of the economy. This impacts not only Louisiana, but also the rest of the country, as 25% of the oil and gas consumed in this country come from here, and 80% of our country's off shore oil and gas pass through here. It also means hurricanes will impact cities further inland, such as New Orleans, Baton Rouge and Lafayette, with much more force and destruction than ever. What to do? Well, lots of fine minds are at work on the problem, and the Coalition to Restore Coastal Louisiana is at the forefront of this movement. They are heading up programs using volunteer people power to restore mangrove trees and marsh grasses on the bayous and rebuilding sand dunes and sand fences along the coast. CRCL has also been instrumental in getting the word out about this problem with their educational programs and annual State of the Coast conference, which will be taking place in New Orleans this year from June 25-27. This issue may seem remote to you if you don't live anywhere near Louisiana, but habitat loss affects us all. I think about it everytime I eat Gulf shrimp and fish.

Today, these kindergarteners got to help out by sorting through the candy, and as you guessed, they loved it! The two guy workers who were here were so informative, fun, and patient with our girls. We got to walk around and tour the first floor and see all the ins and out of the food bank, which was so impressive. I won't attempt to spout any facts I've learned on this tour, except that the GBR Food Bank only has 6 employees, so everything else is volunteers - so cool considering how huge of an organization it is. They do a family night for volunteers on one Tuesday of the month, so we're definitely planning to come back to help! No age minimum, just register ahead of time. As far as helping out the food bank, there are many ways to do it. They said that time is truly the most helpful. However, donating food, donating money, helping to spread the word for others, etc. are all great things. Spread the word and do anything you can to help out our community in need. Lastly, it's not just food that can be donated. They have diapers and dog food too. So many ways to help this great organization.
