"Cabra" is a 'rooftop' restaurant located in the Hoxton Hotel, at the edge of what is now 'Greek-Town'. The Hoxton in Chicago is known for it's central location and it's comfy hotel rooms. "Cabra', the Hoxton Hotel's main eatery, is known for having great food, and for being situated on a rooftop, all in the heart of Fulton Market District, one of Chicago's most creative and eclectic neighborhoods. "Cabra" is is a casual high-end restaurant, located on Green Street, in Chicago's West Loop, just north of the main center of the University of Chicago's "Circle Campus", in the heart of what was once Chicago's old Italian neighborhood, which Irish Mayor-Boss Richard J Daly had demolished, making room for the UC Campus, as an excuse so he could END the Domination of the Sicilian Mob throughout the Midwest. The remaining streets & buildings in the neighborhood landed on the shoulders of the Greeks, turning the Halstead-Green Street area into the largest and most famous Greek Neighborhood in the United States. All but gone, the few remaining Sicilians rebuilt their enclave south of the UC Campus along Taylor Street, from what remained of of the now lost Italians. Now the entire area is a shared mix of Greeks, Sicilians, and young University students, making it one of the most eclectic neighborhoods in Chicago. Wow o Wow! One of our friends couldn't make it to this already paid reservation, so she offered it to us, and we were so blessed and thankful she did. We probably wouldn't have known or been able to check this amazing place out, otherwise. Top of Hoxton Hotel (rooftop restaurant). As soon as you walk in, you will be amazed by the beautiful decor! I want to lead this review with the fact that I love Cabra. I am a repeat diner - coming back because the setting is unique and beautiful, the food is creative and delicious, and there's always something to order for everybody with their small plates. Unfortunately, my two most recent visits have fallen well short of the high bar Cabra has set for itself. Cabra needs to invest in better training its waitstaff, as the waiters for both of these visits fell short of expectations. In one instance, our waiter did not seem to understand what was being served, and it made me nervous for anybody ordering with a dietary restriction or allergy. On the other visit, it seems that our waiter took our order and then disappeared for the rest of the evening. On both occasions, what used to be an intentional pacing of the meal with 1-2 plates on the table at a time has devolved to the meal being thrown on your table whenever each plate is ready. On this last visit, one of the plates was served minutes after placing our order (was it sitting around in the kitchen?), well before our drinks had even been made at the bar. Additionally, you can expect to see high menu prices and small portion sizing. This is not surprising, given the setting of the restaurant and the quality of the food. Nonetheless, diners should be aware that a dinner for two requires between 3-6 plates to be considered a real meal. Overall, I can't say I would recommend Cabra for dinner anymore. Maybe stop in for a drink or two and a shared appetizer before going elsewhere in the neighborhood. With so much to pick from in West Loop, better options are right around the corner. read more

This was my second time at Cabra, and I visited with a friend for lunch this past Saturday. On weekends, they sometimes have DJs, and I really enjoyed the music--but then again, I always enjoy good music! It was a sunny day, and I appreciated how much natural light filled the space while still being indoors. I loved all the food, the server, and the overall experience. We were being pretty indecisive, but the staff was super laid-back and didn't mind at all. As for the vibe, you can definitely dress up or dress down here, but if I had to choose, I'd lean toward dressing up. read more

It had been years since i had been to Chicago, and I was looking forward to checking out Cabra as Stephanie Izard's restaurants had always been highlights of my Chicago experiences. Cabra was fantastic. Located in the Hoxton in West Loop - the ambiance is fun and impressive. The rooftop spot has beautiful views of Chicago and is spacious. We were seated "outdoors" but it was covered in glass and very weather-protected. Cabra is my favorite type of eating style - family style for all. They recommended 6-8 dishes for four, which was the perfect amount. We split the Chicken Thigh Skewer, which was perfectly tender and coated in peanuts and a yuzu sauce. We also split the seared halibut, also delciious, with a ginger chili sauce and coated in olives. The salmon ceviche was outstanding due to its pistachio, avocado sauce (the combination was perfect). And our other highlight was the Blistered Green Beans, it's a generous portion and coated with tingly peanuts (yes, tingly - they lived up to their description) and sesame dressing. We finished with the Passion Fruit Lucuma Mousse, which was very fun to try. Highly recommend, exceeds in atmosphere, service, and food. read more

I came here after a trip to Peru because I was craving a Pisco Sour. The vibes at this rooftop spot are amazing - the indoor space is well heated during the winter, and they have a picturesque pool during warmer weather. I also got the chorizo and queso dip which I really enjoyed as well. This is a great date night spot or a night out with friends. The moment I walked into the hotel to get to Cabra I was just amazed. Everything looked luxurious as you walked through the front doors, then take the elevator up to the restaurant. We sat outside and ate but the bar area gave a classy, fun vibe. This is more like Peruvian fusion or inspired cuisine. We tried many dishes. Service was superb and attentive. -salmon ceviche 5/5 - very good. Salmon well seasoned. -goat empanadas - i liked the meat inside, wasn't dry. Only complaint is I wished they added one more since it was $16. -chicken thigh anticucho - it was good but like the previous dish, wished they added one more. -chicharron del puerco 5/5 - pork shank was fatty and flavorful. Please eat it with the sauce, bread, and other components to maximize the taste. Pork shank can be a little salty but not if you eat it with the other items. -ice cream 5/5 - ice cream is very good here. We ordered Return of Saturn, Sweater Weather, and Almost Famous. Service was quick and on point. Cocktails were very good. My fav was Sweater weather. It had vodka, coffee liqueur and Baileys. We were a little lost, but found this located inside of a very lively hotel. We were sat without reservations and the vibe was very eclectic and upbeat for a Saturday afternoon. One of Stephanie Izards amazing restaurants and my first time at this one. I love Girl and the Goat and Duck Duck Goat and so was really excited to score a nice patio table with good views at Cabra. Since we had a reservation, we got seated right away and had a hard time narrowing down what to order. Our server recommended about 2 dishes person (so 8 for a total of 4 people). We ended up ordering 7 dishes (+ 2 desserts) but I actually think that if 2 of the dishes were the larger plates, then 5 or 6 is plenty. The standouts were the goat empanadas, steak saltado, and chicharron. I thought we could have gone without the hamachi and between the duck ceviche, mushroom ceviche, and solterito, maybe just pick one because there were a lot of similarities in either ingredients and/or flavor. Since we were also celebrating dual birthdays we had the soft serve swirl and the picarones both of which were fantastic! Definitely prefer girl and the goat and duck duck goat to Cabra, but Cabra did not disappoint! read more

Oh cabra, how I love thy but have a hard time giving you 5 stars. Lol Staff has been hit or miss the last few times I've been here. Host/hostess are not the friendliest and are not transparent about wait times. Even with a reservation I would say anticipate waiting a good 30-45 mins. I had a 730pm reservation and wasn't seated until after 8pm. Wait staff is much better - friendly, good amount of attentive and does explain the menu and gives recommendations. The food is decent - this time we had the duck ceviche and I would order that again. Aside from that we had the papas huancaina, jalea mixta and the bluefin tuna dish that was their daily special. They were all OK, nothing I would order again however it was good to try! Drinks and atmosphere is where it's at, 5 stars for the vibes, music and the cocktails! That's what keeps me coming back here. My favorites are the pisco sour and passion in Peru. Pisco sour is Peru's signature drink and it's delicious. Passion in Peru has mezcal and is the perfect amount of smoky. It's a well thought out drink and I really enjoyed it. This rooftop restaurant/bar has an outdoor pool with a bar there too. It's a great place to have a few drinks before your reservation starts. They usually have a DJ Saturday nights and I reallllllly enjoy the music, it's always a great time. read more

Located at the Hoxton hotel, you will find this rooftop restaurant. The vide is full of energy and the decor is very pleasing. You have your dining area, and then you have the pool side with a bar and DJ at this visit. The food is tapa style, but I found it was still enough to share. Amazing experience all around. The ambiance is honestly like none other--there is a beautiful lush rooftop area with stunning views of the city & a pool area. Perfect for a special occasion or impressing an out of town visitor. The food was also spot on. I tried the following: Salchipapas: MUST get. 11/10--the flavors mesh together perfectly & I really hadn't tasted anything like this even though this dish is essentially loaded fries. Chicken Thigh Anticucho: 10/10. The chicken was so juicy and flavorful. The marinade they use is out of this world! Steak Saltado: 10/10 again! My friend told me this dish was good and she didn't lie. One *minor* critique--there are far more tomatoes than anything else, but the flavors are impeccable so this dish still gets a 10/10. Shrimp Ceviche: 7.5/10. Flavors were good and the crispy corn was particularly interesting, however, I have had better shrimp ceviche. The drinks here are strong but tasty. I got an Aperol Spritz and some frozen drink with Tajin. Both are great! Service was a bit slow, but nothing terrible. read more

Cabra: I'm discovering that Chicago Hotels have some gems like The American Writers Museum and this Peruvian/Cuban rooftop bar. After entering through The Hoxton Hotel, take the elevator up to a lounge where a greenhouse meets Havana. Especially after a cold rainy day (I went in February), it feels like you're transported to a more tropical climate and a different time. With a view of the city, and framed vintage swimsuits it's a very fun lounge with pops of teals and pinks. I met up with a dear friend of mine who now claims Chicago as her home and caught up over cocktails and tapas. We had the oysters, ceviche, and goat empanadas while reminiscing. I really enjoyed Cabra. We went when the weather was not warm enough to enjoy the full experience of sitting outside, but the food and drinks were still outstanding. The restaurant sits on top of the Hoxton hotel and offers great views. They have a wide range of cocktails and my wife and I enjoyed. Food wise, I would call out the chicken thigh and scallop as my two favorites. The scallop dish, in particular, has awesome flavor, and the serving is a larger quantity of smaller sized scallops. This made it easy to share. Additionally, the staff was nice and provided friendly service. The seating is also unique and comfortable - not your standard tables/chairs, but in a good way.
