This has been my third time to Tanta (see my original review) in the five years since we've lived in Chicago; and it just keeps getting better! Having moved to Chicago 5 years ago and loving what we had in Los Angeles with Las Quenas - Authentic Peruvian Cuisine, Tanta has filled our void, and then some. We love how elevated their food is at a similar price as Las Quenas. With this Five Star batting average these nice people will be seeing a lot of me and my wife (and friends). Do not walk, RUN to this adorable rooftop located in River North. Tanta specializes in Peruvian food which I never had before. The food was phenomenal, the service was super friendly, and the atmosphere was so inviting. They have the cutest decor. I started off with the trio empanadas taster. One was beef, one was chicken, and one was like a tomato paste. All of them were delicious. A great choice for starters. For my entree I got the Pan Con Chicharron, it was pretty tasty. The pork was nice and tender and I loved the sauce it came with. They also have the cutest cocktails. This is an excellent rooftop to grab food at on a beautiful sunny day. We got the rooftop and it was a great vibe up there. Also, I tried my first pisco, which was fun. My standout was the scallops with the Parmesan foam covering it. It was so good and the age of the Parmesan added a nice touch. The octopus was pretty tender a little bit fatty, but I loved the seasonings in the rice. It's like paella. Located on the rooftop with shaded and unshared with umbrellas dining room tables. Seating is limited. I enjoy the independence day party for $100 all you can eat and two drink tickets at 12p. There are tasty native non alcoholic options. I was disappointed the live entertainment started after I was leaving. Luckily one of the managers said I could stay for 15 more minutes. The live band, singer, and dancers were very festive. Last year the entertainment started around noon and I brought three peruvians and a girlfriend. The show was a huge hit last year. I was sad that the 3p reservations included live entertainment and not the 12p reservations for the same money this year. Its a bit unfair. read more

Came here for brunch with the girls and really liked it. I brought one of my friends who's Peruvian and she loved it too, so that was a good sign lol. I got the French toast and it was sooo good. Definitely sweet, but the berries helped balance it out and I ate basically all of it. The restaurant itself is really colorful and welcoming, and just has a fun vibe for brunch. Went for an early dinner on a Sunday, it was not busy at first but filled up pretty quickly. Hip and fun ambiance inside. Some tables are pretty tight together, so be sure to ask for separated table and seats if you wish to have more space. Staff were friendly, however not very attentive throughout our meal, hence the 4 stars. We ordered a little bit of everything to share and try: cebiche, empanada trio, lamb chop, arroz marisco and desserts. Came in here, a few weeks back for dinner with some friends. Unfortunately, the weather did not cooperate, so we could not take advantage of their really cool looking balcony. From the beginning, our server was very attentive and walked us through the menu. She gave us several suggestions on dishes to order that would complement each other. Also strongly recommend or during the chips; everyone's food will come out as it is made, so it's nice to have something for everyone to share to begin with. Interior was really neat, and the music was not too loud or too quiet either which I always appreciate. We had several appetizer dishes, as well as the arroz Mariscos. The only thing I did not like about this place was that the food all came out a different times. The other couple that we were with had several of their dishes before we had anything. We did order chips to split at the table, so it's not like we had nothing to eat, but I feel like when restaurants bring things out as they are made, it lends to a weird dynamic between two different couples if you were ordering together. That being said, our food came out not too terribly long after the other couple's. Overall, great time here, and delicious food. Would happily come back! read more

I had so high hopes for this place and maybe that's why I was a bit disappointed, because I was maybe expecting too much and it was just ok. The host to being with was the worse. She sat us down, brought 1 menu ( we were 2) and said she'd be back with the other ( and we are still waiting ) her phone was more important so she never gave us a second menu. The waitress talked like she didn't have a voice ( SO hard to even understand what she was saying) Food overall was good ( nothing to die for) Ceviches were delicious at least. Ambience good although when we got there there was only 1 more table, but I guess it gets better when it gets busier. My friend chose Tanta for Restaurant Week 2026 dinner and I'm glad she did! Really good Peruvian food & drinks. We had a reservation and they seated us right away - it's always a little tough to rate service during RW because it's usually quite busy and not a typical night but all the servers were very nice, we just had a slow start and there were a few times we were missing silverware but not a big deal. To start, I was glad to see they also had a pisco sour flight deal for RW and that was a big yes for me. It was fun to try the different flavors, but the classic was my favorite. I also tried a sip of my friend's guava cocktail, which was very tasty too. For food, they offered 4 courses starting with shrimp ceviche, which was *mwah* chefs kiss. Followed by the duck dumplings, which I also really enjoyed. I did not care for the fish katsu main but that probably comes down to personal tastes as it was overwhelmingly too tomato-y for me. However, redemption was served in the form of the lucuma brownie for dessert. We also ordered the octopus for the table to split and it was plated beautifully and cooked perfectly! There were many ingredients in the dishes I had not heard of or tasted before, which made this a unique dining experience. I would happily return to try more of their regular menu, and definitely recommend if you like Peruvian food. Just note $$ can add up quickly if you're ordering multiple dishes and drinks. I love when restaurants offer a tasting menu, it takes thinking out of the equation and lets you sample their best dishes. A couple of months ago, we got to try their summer tasting menu and it was divine. Every course was absolutely delicious, beautifully presented, and we left with our bellies full and happy. I ordered their birthday special for my daughter and they came out came with a colorful 7-layer cake, sparklers, and sang to her. They even a printed photo of us to take home afterwards. Such a thoughtful touch that made the celebration extra memorable. Service was great from hostess to our server and everyone else for that matter! Reservations are necessary. I'd highly recommend sitting on the rooftop if you can, it's such a charming setting with string lights, bougainvillea flowers everywhere, and views of the city. We came here for dinner on a week night. We were going to see if we could get in, luckily they have just a table for us! Once we sat down, we were created by our waiter. He explained that Tanta serves elevated Peruvian cuisine. He gave us the menu, and asked if there is any dietary restriction or allergies (yes, one of us is Celiac). He then explained that most can be modified but not the fried ones due to cross contamination risk. When we placed the order, he was very diligent to note that the dishes should be gluten free. He also came to confirm after checking in with the chef. We did change one dish. First, there's a good list of cocktail, but also spirit free. Both food and drink came out relatively quick. We opted for sharing plates. Everything was flavorful, and cook to perfection. I would recommend to check out Tanta for a special night out or try out Peruvian cuisine. Make sure to talk to your wait staff as they do give good recommendations. read more

It took us a while to figure out what we wanted to do for drinks, but the majority of us decided to do bottomless mimosas. These had a two hour time limit and by the time everyone got seated, we only had about an hour and a half left before they closed their kitchen. The staff was very accommodating and was able to let us keep a few bottles of champagne on the table. It was a little difficult for them to get them to refill the chasers, but I know it was busy and we had a big table of 11. We all ordered different things as the bottomless menu included some entrées while others just did the regular menu. I wasn't super hungry, so I ended up getting the tasting set of three empanadas which included a corn, beef and chicken. My personal favorite was the corn because of the sauces. I know it was a tasting, but for almost $30 I'd wanted a little bit more since they were kinda tiny. read more

This should have been a 5 star review. Lots of part of our experience here for dinner were 5-star caliber. This included the food and drink, the fantastic service by our waiter, Swan, and the ambiance and music. The rooftop experience and the happy hour offers were also nice options. But a few things took away from the overall experience. When we were seated, a woman came to our table - I assume a hostess since she was not dressed like any other staff - and asked us whether we preferred still or sparkling water. Of the options she gave us, we chose still and got bottled Saratoga water. It was only later while we were eating, I noticed everyone at adjacent tables had tap water poured for them by staff. So I asked our server if still and sparkling were our only water options. He said they were not, and regular water should have been offered. I explained we were not given that information, and he removed this from our bill. But I really wish I knew the name of the woman who mislead us about this, I would definitely called her out to management. The other thing was the bussing staff. We were constantly asked if we were done with our plates, even if there was still some portion of food on them. This felt like it was every 60 to 90 seconds. It certainly wasn't for lack of plates in the kitchen, during our 90 minutes (allowed) there on a Friday night, the restaurant was never more than 2/3 full. Would I come back here? Absolutely. And knowing what I know now, next time I'm sure it will be a 5 star experience worthy of an updated review. At least it better be. read more

Why was this meal SO DANG GOOD. My friend kept hyping it up and I see why. We sat in their newly renovated rooftop which is beautiful by the way. It was a little toasty but still beautiful. Everything was phenomenal! Our fav dishes were the ceviche trio, parmesan scallops, and the lamb chops. BEST ceviche I've had in a long time. The sauce on the scallops is so rich and compliments the scallop. Surprisingly the broccolini was a fan favorite amongst the table too because of the sauce! I came here for happy hour at the bar, having already dined at Astrid y Gascon in Lima and Chicha in Cusco last month. Tanta is their international branch and I am glad they've come to Chicago. The experience did not disappoint. There was space at the rooftop bar when I arrived. I was thankfully out of the sun. It was probably about 86° in the sun :-) I started with the cebiche limeno which is with shrimp and octopus and an empanada carne which is nicely spiced beef in a pastry shell and with huacatay which is a unique herb from Peru (and perhaps other parts). Delicious! I had an old fashioned with a dark spiced rum. Something I had been introduced to on the train between Cusco and Puno. It was good but then I saw they had Diplomatico so for my next one I switched to that. Try it! The Bartenders are solid people, interested that you're enjoying yourself and what you're eating and drinking. And ready to make suggestions It's not just about alcohol as the first thing they did was serve me a glass of water and leave me a small bottle they kept filled. Once my friend arrived, he has the cebiche Classico with the catch of the day. I forget the name of the fish. It may have been mackerel. The large kernels of choclo provide a nice counterpoint to the fish. The lime juice is not too acidic in the leche de tigre. We had more to eat and drink in the merry company of others at the bar. The outdoor lights provided a twinkling as night fell and diners filled the tables. Being outdoors meant this old man could hear himself talk. I like the small plates concept on the whole. Tanta was an amazing introduction to Peruvian food! We went with a big group and ordered family-style to sample as much as possible--mushrooms, arroz mariscos, broccolini chifero, branzino, churrasco tanta steak, Pulpo Anticuchero, empanadas, steak and chicken skewers, and cebiche. Everything was flavorful and beautifully presented. For dessert we tried the Amazonian and el choclito (which is cleverly disguised as corn), both of which were creative and delicious. We were late for our reservation, but they were able to accommodate us anyways at the bar. We came for happy hour appetizers and drinks. All of the appetizers we had were absolute dynamite. Both of the cebiches were fresh, well balanced, and offered different experiences than each other. The bao was straight up delicious, sometimes baos can be a miss and this is something I'd definitely order again and recommend. The pork belly wasn't all fat either which was my favorite!! Anticucho de Pollo was also very yummy. Cocktail I had a Chicha Punch which wasn't exactly my favorite but it's because it's a red wine and tequila mix, the red wine didn't do it for me. I tried my husbands pisco cocktail though and that had something to offer! The bathroom is down some stairs, so keep that in mind. I wish I was more hungry so I can get more ceviche. They have like 4-5 type of ceviche, and I am sure they are all great. I had the classic ceviche, with chucky pieces of white fish and big pieces of sweet potato. The portion is smaller than regular Peruvian restaurants I think, something to beware of. Pisco sour is strong. For $16 they make sure you get every ounce of pisco that can fit in the glass. Service is great, constant refill. I highly recommend Tanta for a fancy meal. read more

Absolutely loved Tanta. The ambiance, service, and food left nothing to be desired. The pulpo was nicely cooked, not chewy at all. The lomo saltado was the best one I've ever had. Good meal! As a Peruvian I definitely could tell and taste the authenticity of the ingredients used in the dishes. I have been to the location in Peru and it's quite on par. I wish they gave a bit more meat in the lomo saltado dish but it was on point flavor wise. The nigirs were all delicious, I'd skip the shrimp one next time though. The causa was perfect, great potato to crab ratio. Tanta was a quick 10 min walk from our hotel on magnificent mile and as soon as you walk in, the vibes are great. There is beautiful art on the wall and place feels vibrant. We liked their empanadas. We got the trio but the chicken was my fave (make sure you get extra limes!) We got their criollo which has some fun flavors. If you like wagyu steak and sushi, you'll like. The lomo Saltado was my fave of the night. Loved the flavor profile of the sauce and the crunchy veggies! Steak was nice and plentiful. Portions were good. I could have easily shared this. We also got the Lima Bangkok salmon which also had this beautiful red sauce and was cooked to perfection. We got a side of broccolini but we didn't really need it (it came with some nice broccolini). Again, a very generous piece. We ordered a bottle of their Terras Gaudas albarino (white wine) which was great! Deeper flavors and a crispness I didn't expect. Ultimate rooftop vibes! I had so much fun checking out Tanta. The rooftop a beautiful oasis in the heart of the city with great views of the city. We had an early reservation at 5pm and it was pretty empty, but by 6pm the place was packed. Our server was amazing and gave us so many great and gave so many wonderful recommendations. To drink, I went with the el chingon. This cocktail is jalapeño-infused tequila, mezcal, lime, rocoto ice sphere, cilantro salt. Tanta's take on a spicy margarita and so delicious. I also tried the pisco sour and liked that as well! For food, my friend and I shared a few dishes including the the Apasionado (ahi tuna, passion fruit sauce, pickled veggies, nikkei glaze , green apple, daikon, purple shiso). This was such a colorful, fresh dish! A must try. We also really enjoyed the chicken thigh skewers -- so juicy and flavorful. The final dish we tried were the empanada trio. The beef was my favorite of these. Cocktails, food, vibes were all 10/10. Lovely time at Tanta! read more

Service and ambiance - incredible, we sat out on the patio which is so cozy and they even turned on the heater for us because it was slightly chilly. Our waiter Simon was very friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. He made great recommendations and food was delicious! We ordered the cebiche trio, wagyu nigiri and red crab salad for starters and the cebiche was the standout . For mains we shared the arroz mariscos, arroz con pato and seabass special which were so flavorful- the best was definitely the arroz mariscos and the duck was fall of the bone tender! All in all the dishes were well balanced and flavorful! For desert we shared the tres leches - finger licking good! We will definitely be back! read more

Vibey but pricey! We mostly focused our meal on Chifa (Peruvian Chinese fusion) as that's my jam, so I was very impressed with the food. However, it is a bit pricey. *CLÁSICO CEVICHE (PERU'S NATIONAL DISH - catch of the day, classic leche de tigre, choclo, sweet potatoes, cancha, lime, habanero, red onions, cilantro) - the catch of the day was the corvina. It was really tasty ceviche. Really nicely balanced and loved all the lil' accoutrements - very true to what I expect from Peruvian ceviche! We exclusively ordered from the 'Del Wok' - basically the Chifa section & ordered the most classic Chifa dishes IMHO: *LOMO SALTADO (wok stir-fried beef tenderloin, tomatoes, onions, garlic, oyster soy-sauce, cilantro, tossed with fried potato wedges, side of arroz con choclo) - I mean they use filet for this soooooo 'nough said! But, the flavors were really good and everything was very well executed. *CHIHAOKAY MARINO (filet catch of the day with a shrimp mousse crust, soy-sesame sauce, chaufita blanco, pickles) - the filet catch of the day was Mahi Mahi which is perfect for this type of crust. It was actually my first time having chijaukay like this! It's usually made with chicken so this is definitely elevated. They also served theirs on a bed of fried rice. It was delicious and we definitely were part of the clean plate club here! We also had a couple of pisco-based cocktails, which were pretty stellar. We were way too full for dessert but they have lucuma (a fruit native to the Amazon that apparently tastes like butterscotch!!) The overall ambience was trendy with bumping music and big colorful graffiti-like murals on the wall. Great spot for a nice date night.
