We went to Cabernet as a family of 15 to celebrate New Year's Eve. We knew it would be crazy, and we were all very understanding that this was New Year's Eve and most of the staff would have probably preferred to have spent it with their own family. With that said, we tried to have a great time with our waiter, and actually make jokes and have conversation with him as the night went on.
Before anyone of us placed our order we asked our waiter if we could split the bill. He said that it was not a problem but it would be best if it was done at the end of the night. So he went on and took everyone's orders. The food took a while to come out (but again understood, because it was New Year's Eve). When it came, it was good. Water was refilled promptly, drinks, desserts, etc. The service was pretty good.
But, then came the bill.. At the end of the meal, our waiter came to us ask how we would be splitting the bill. It was explained to him, he seemed confused, but left and came back with items added on that we hadn't order and the each bill split up with the wrong items on it. This was not a problem, we went through it again, and he left. Things took a turn when instead of our waiter coming back, another waiter, who claimed to be the head of the staff came back. This was a mistake for two major reasons, one, he hadn't been there the entire night, he did not know who was sat where (which is there system) and who ordered what. The biggest issue, however, was that he came back with a horrible attitude and decided to only speak Spanish to us. Mind you, everyone at our table spoke English. There were members of our family that were more comfortable speaking Spanish and so among our family we may have been speaking Spanish at times, but this was never done with the staff at the restaurant. So, the intention for sending this new waiter to "figure" out our bills was clear and misguided. Even with that, we continued to be polite and cooperate. Our original waiter never came back to address anything. And unfortunately, it took taking a lot of attitude from this new waiter and 45 mins after our meal was done to figure out the bills. At one point, we wrote down on individual papers what each individual party had ordered using the codes and names used on their own bill to facilitate him splitting our bills and he refused to look at the papers. Literally, would turn his head to not look, and would instead offer comments like "This could not happen in restaurants in New York." What was almost comical about this interaction is that we were cooperating and listening to him but when anyone of us would talk he would tell us to calm down and that he was just trying to help but in reality we were calm and he wasn't listening. At times, again, refusing to listen.
Though I feel like this experience deserves probably much less than three stars, I decided on the three stars because the food was good, the service was good while we ate, the restaurant was beautifully decorated for the holidays, the staff was dressed nicely and they were very presentable. This would have been a 4-star review just based on that. The issue, unfortunately, that soured the whole experience was splitting of the bill but mostly that exchange that was unsolicited from a waiter that was not part of the whole night. read more
