Great Cuban food. My girlfriend and I shared empanadas and yuca fries for appetizers. They kindly allowed us to mix up the empanadas so that one could try one of each of their flavors. These were the best empanadas that I can remember. The yuca fries were crispy and were certainly amongst the best that I've had. For our main course, we shared a couple of their signature items: paella and coco Cubano con pollo. The paella was delicious and the coco cubano was extremely unique. No ma'am. In my quick yelp-research for a nearby restaurant, this was the highest rated restaurant. To my suppose I was completely underwhelmed by the overall experience. To start, the food here was absolutely bland, over cooked and lacked flavor. My guest and I started off with two rounds of the coconut mojito and the raspberry mojito. Both were good but it tasted like straight juice. I don't even remember feeling a slight buzz (because rum- whether light or dark, I feel lol) but taste wise, it tasted like an icee off the cart. Yum. But barely any alcohol it seemed like. Appetizer: the calamari is good, standard. Entrees: I got the skirt steak MW and my guest the chicken breast in white wine (can't remember the appropriate name sorry). For the sake of being concise I'll list the issues: - rice was hard - beans were bland - steak that I asked for MW was beyond well (I now realized that skirt steak is thin and possibly over cooked immediately) I wish there was a temp recommended to me because I don't know anything about steaks, steak cuts, etc. - steak was incredibly chewy, I gave up half way. - dinner mates food?: the plantains and the wine sauce was the only good thing about that dish. Other than that the shrimp was tough as well, the dish barely had any flavor. You would think they would season the chicken more! Overall, the presentation of this entire experience was wonderful. The lights on the palm trees, the color scheme. The well dressed servers, the path to tables- even the plating of the food. Cute! But the taste of the food was just awful. ALWAYS A GOOD SPOT FOR A GOOD CHURRASCO Been going here all these years and last night went with gfs and bf. The wait is always a problem here since they don't have a designated waiting area and with the cold weather, it's an issue. First time for the bf and we ordered the churrasco and since we have small appetites we just shared and have more to share with gfs. The gfs ordered paella and mariscadas. I had dinner here last night and my only regret is that I didn't take any pictures (the occasion didn't allow for it). I absolutely enjoyed my meal, I went with the Paella Valencia and a side of tostones. I also had a Caipirinha to drink. My companion had the Pollo al Ajillo with a side of maduros and a piña colada to drink. My friends always seem to rave about Cabana but I hadn't visited before, I'm glad I've finally experienced this place. Although NYC recently resumed indoor dining at 25 percent, we opted to dine outside. They have tents set up with cute string lights and table service was white tablecloth, these were both nice touches. I had the Purple Rain cocktail and it was delicious. The Mariquitas are always a delight. I had the Pollo Al ajillo, yellow rice and red beans and the dish was good. I thought the Chicken breast was grilled for this dish but it was boiled, the ajillo made up for it. I should have asked. The service was slow at a time when the restaurant was pretty empty. There was one other table with two people when we arrived and it took the waitress 10 minutes to take our drink orders. Even for refills she would just forget and we had to ask multiple times. Came today with hubby and son. Had lunch special churrasco and ropa vieja. Apps we had filled platano cups mixed. Sorry no pics. We gobbled that down. Red rice and black beans--yums!!! Forest Hills is home to many great eateries and one of the best ones in the area is Cabana, a Cuban hot spot with some excellent food. The place isn't big but is a great place to enjoy a date or small group in a semi-intimate setting. One major gripe about the table setting was that it was a little disorganized the last time I was here and some of my dishes were not clean. Service was spotty at best, but were able to replace my set and dishes in a semi-timely manner. I have a feeling things can be worse, but my dining companion had already assured me this was as bad as it would get. And thank goodness, he was right. The food was well presented and the portions were very healthy. The La Playa salad was well decorated with chopped mango, tomatoes, and onions, with ample chunks of avocado within every bite. They weren't skimpy with any of the seafood and made the $12 worth every penny. More than anything, I was thoroughly impressed with my Paella Marinera, which was not only super tasty but was seasoned perfectly and contained plenty of seafood. I will note that it was nothing like I've had in Spain but certainly a worthy attempt. I've had worse Paella in many parts of New York but this one was worth ordering again. Presentation was the name of the game with the desserts and both the Guava Con Queso and Banana Fritters were spectacular. Upon closer inspection the Banana Fritters resemble pieces of poo with chocolate syrup, but thankfully tasted like everything but. I could certainly see myself coming here again and will mark this restaurant as one of the better Cuban choices in NYC. read more

If Yelp had the 1/2 star rating, this place would be 3 1/2 as it was better than 3 but not quite a 4. Ambience was nice, festive and fun to be in. Bar is small but has variety of liquor. Also, their mohjito is not bad at all. Service was nice, probably, service was better than the actual food itself. Cute little Cuban spot in Forest Hills. It's tiny inside but they manage to pack plenty of tables into such a small space. There is also outdoor seating for the nicer summer nights (the night we went was not one of them). Small bar area right when you walk in, which is where we waited until our table was ready 5 minutes later. The coconut mojitos are delicious and strong. The menu has something for everyone, including Cuban favorites such as picadillo. They had specials that evening, which included steak and lobster. The picadillo was good but lacking some flavor. The rice and beans were excellent. The tostones are massive and come with a delicious dipping sauce. They also offer stuffed tostones if you're feeling adventurous. My boyfriend had the steak and shrimp special. He said the shrimp were delicious but the steak wasn't very flavorful. Service is fast, prices are fair. What do you do when your boss chooses a pub as a lunch spot by accident? You pull out your phone and get on Yelp! True story. Yelp! has helped me locate the nearest lunch spots around Forest Hills which led us to Cabana! My team of 6 including myself was immediately greeted by the hostess at her podium. The restaurant was quiet during the hour we walked in. The ambience was very Caribbean as you can see palm trees and the colors of the walls makes you feel like you're at a hot beach! We were immediately seated and welcomed by our waiter who also handed us the menus. We ordered the calamari and Tostones Rellenos as our appetizers. The calamari was flavorful with cajun powder and perhaps, garlic? It arrived at our table still hot and steamy! So one bite into it, crispy and flavorful. The amount to share was fairly more than enough for everyone! Tostones Rellenos was recommended by our waiter. They were fried green plaintains shaped like a cup. It was a sampler so they came with chicken, shrimp, ropa vieja (shredded beef/steak), and picadillo (ground beef with tomatoes). The sampler plate was absolutely delicious! I only got to try the picadillo one and it was the just amount of spice! The proportion of spice and meat was right for that cupful shaped fried green plaintains! Must try! I ordered from the Lunch Menu: Pollo y Parrilla - It came with the choice of soup or salad. I chose the salad, the veggies were fresh and the sauce tasted like a similar ginger sauce fusion with vinaigrette. (My guess?). My entree came with grilled chicken breast with spinach, sweet plaintains, and rice & beans. The grilled chicken breast was grilled to perfection with flavors of garlic, cilantro, red pepper, cumin, etc. Every bite was flavorful! Spinach was not overcooked and it still had that crunch! The sweet plaintains was a bit too sweet but perhaps it was just very ripe! My yellow rice came with beans on the side. The beans were the right level of salty and it goes great with the yellow rice to make it moist! I will definitely come back here again during lunch or maybe dinner! They have really great lunch specials with plenty of street parking in front of the restaurant. I had the ropa vieja and the my bf ordered the churrasco. The lunch specials come with a choice of soup or salad. We ordered one of each. The soup of the day was pumpkin soup which was delicious! Creamy and not too heavy. The salad was fresh. The ropa vieja was full of flavor and the shredded steak was tender. I liked the churrasco better though. The steak was delicious and cooked well to my taste :) We also ordered tostones and added cheese on top which is a must! Everything with cheese is always better. Cabana has been a place I've gone to a few times before I was a yelper. One of my favorite dishes is quite a simple one that many don't do well and Cabana does it spectacularly. At a glance cabana is a small cramped space on a block with about 7 other restaurants. Cabana is usually filled to capacity with its small space which is what initially attracted my attention how could this place be so packed? The mojitos at cabana are next to none. They have a vast amount of mojitos tons of different combos. My favorite is the "Cojito" a coconut mojito sweet, strong, tart and my fav part the piece of sugar cane that comes as a mixing straw. As for my dish I had the churrasco (skirt steak) perfectly medium with a side of tostones. The tostones were light and crispy with a nice side of fresh garlic to spread over top. The churrasco comes to your table still sizzling and smoking as it cooks on the hot pan brought out to you the smell and sound hits you first before you even see it. Then those bright pink pickled onions and bright green chimmichurri sauce are the first things you see. Spreading the chimmichurri sauce as all of those herbs and spices drip into your still sizzling steak is just a meat lovers dream packed with flavor. Definitely need to go back again and share some of the other things I've eaten in my pre yelp years. read more

This place used to be good .. not sure what happened but it's fallen off .. we paid 124$ for a disgusting meal you can tell they used frozen seafood I had the paella .. it smelled delicious but tasted terrible .seafood was overcooked and rubbery . The funeral Director recommended us this location. 16 of us went and every one was delighted with their choice. From carnivores to vegetarians to light fare, each one got a plentiful and savory dish. One random Tuesday evening my partner and I decided to do date night there...the place was amazing. We both order the Paella. I ordered the dish with mussels and clams and he chose the dish with octopus. The dish was about $30 but he definitely got out money's worth. Cabana has been my favorite Caribbean-latino restaurant since I was 8. A Forest Hills gem. They have locations in Manhattan, as well. A testament to their success. Ambiance: A little crowded, lively. Definitely not a place for a 2+ hour dinner. I'm usually out in under 2 hours. Colorful decor, small spaces for seating, outdoor seating in the summer. They can make you wait a while for a table or you can be seated right away. It really varies. They have a small bar area if you have to wait. They DO NOT seat without the whole party. Drinks: The red wine sangria is the only thing you should ever drink there. Though, ask that they lessen the sugar. Over the years, the sangria has gotten sweeter. Not sure if it's a change in the wine or maybe the actual amount of sugar added. Either way, it's not as great as it was in the past but it's still my favorite red wine sangria in NYC. I've heard good things about the mojitos but I would never betray my sangria. Food: Like the sangria, it's not the same as it was in the past. But, it's still amazing. Best things to order: 1-Churrasco, medium rare or rare (it cooks a lot on the plate) with rice and beans or salad if you want to be healthy, 2-coconut shrimp (the dressings/accompaniments used to be different cause it doesn't taste as good to me but still worth ordering now), 3- the plátanos rellenos is possibly the best platano dish in NYC-get the mixture of the meats (fried plaintain cups filled with meat and accompanied by the best garlic oil), 4- CABANA BANANA FRITTERS (I could die on those banana fritters and the simple banana ice cream that comes with it). My parents always used to order Paella, Chicharrones de pollo, and salmon salad. Those are pretty great dishes but not stand out like the ones above. Pricing: It's fairly on the expensive side for Forest Hills. I think it's absolutely worth every dime. Y'all have no clue how difficult it is to make plátanos rellenos so uniformly. Service: Very average. Nothing has ever stood out as bad or particularly good over all these years at any location. I would be AMAZED if you went and didn't like the dishes I listed. Love this place! Yesterday I went to Cabana after a very unpleasant experience at its neighbor UNO's. (See that review) We were seated immediately and placed our drink order a right away. Two red Sangrias were on the table within 5 mins. We ordered that Baccalaitos(codfish fritters with guacamole). The waiter gave us a run down of the menu and my mom decided on the snapper and I got the grilles salmon. (See photos) Both the drinks and the appetizers were amazing. The drinks had the right amount of kick to them and the Baccalaitos were so flavorful and delicious. By the time we were finished the entrée came out. Omg, it was so good! The meals were well prepared with just enough flavor to make it authentic. Cabana is not the cheapest place to eat, but it's worth it. The total was $88 and tip pushed it over $100. Cool and fun spots in FoHi! I was thinking a 3.5 rating, but rounded up to a 4 and I will get into how they can earn the full 4. I have only been here for the lunch specials. They offer reasonably price lunch specials that include soup, rice and beans. We ordered the CHICHARRONES DE POLLO and ROPA VIEJA. Both dishes were tasty. The ROPA VIEJA was a bit small, it could have been better if the dish had as much meat as the pollo dish. We also ordered the seafood paella, which wasn't on the lunch menu. I would order all 3 dishes again. Now for the next 1/2 point knock. My whole party felt disrespected by the waitress. We understand a larger bill leads to a larger tip. The waitress did her best to keep reminding us. She asked us 3 different times if we wanted more than just water. I have had the pina coladas here before, they were ok. For this meal, we all just wanted water. The paella can easily feed 2 and she reminded us a couple of times that we could be short a dish. Then after offering to explore the dessert menu and deciding not to order dessert, she seemed very surprised. Finally, not sure if this is standard procedure, but she collected our unused appetizer plates and instead of putting them in the dishwashing bin, she just returned the plates to the unused stack to be used again later for different guests. We were touching those plates. We do not plan on identifying this waitress. Instead, we just want to let management know that we had a nice experience, but this waitress put a bit of a damper on it.
