I first came to this bakery a few years ago to pick up a cake for an anniversary. We were in town for a week. I have thought about this cake and tried to make it back to the bakery each year I visit. Finally made it back here, this time with more suggestions of what to get. Crawfish cornbread was amazing! Cake was as good as I remember! I've been a few times when ive visited lately cause my family getting their wedding cake from here. I've tried a few desserts and I just didnt like any. It was a little dry to me. I dont like cakes refrigerated cause I feel like it dries it out more... try it out for yourself. I give all the star cause last time I came i had a boudin roll. It wasn't called roll but it was good. Soft yeast roll time with filling boudin, cheese amd something else. Best thing ive had from there. If there was more filling it would be perfect. The roll to filling ratio was off. It was mostly bread. Staff is always great. Respectful amd nice whenever I visit. Parking is street parking. I've never been when its busy so always able to get a spot. read more

Wooooooww, i am stunned by this place. I literally feel honored being able to eat a cake from here. Wanted to get one for my friend's bachelorette and after researching cakes in the city, i found that taylor swift ordered from there for her birthday a couple years ago so I thought that was a fun tidbit and went with it. My friends and I have talked so much about the whole foods berry chantilly cake before so when I saw they also had a berry chantilly cake here I knew it was the one. When I ordered on the phone, they let me customize the colors to match my friend's bachelorette scheme too! And when I mentioned the early pickup time (I wanted to be able to sneak back into the airbnb before anyone woke up so that the cake would be a surprise) the girl on the phone joked that I'd regret giving her such an early time (tbh she wasn't wrong but I don't regret it) The price was so worth and honestly I would've paid twice as much - the color customization (which was free!!) was beautiful, and it was so delicious. Easily fed the entire bachelorette party for multiple days (I might've been eating cake at every spare moment). Then a couple months later, another kicker. I was reading the NYTimes cooking recipe description for their berry chantilly cake, where they mentioned that the owner of Bywater Bakery actually developed the berry chantilly cake for whole foods - WHAT. Love love love Bywater Bakery! They always have so many yummy options it's hard to choose what to get! When I can this, is a great place to work for half a day. There isn't a lot of space for this and they do close at 2pm but they have free wifi and an awesome coffee and pastry special (just $5!). There are also so many options for a hot meal such as the Jambalaya pastry that I got. There are breads, cookies, cakes, and so much more! This popular bakery in the neighborhood was so lively on a Sunday morning! They had musicians playing in front of the bakery so we could hear this place before seeing it. The person who took our order at the front was very sweet and helpful, giving good recs on which cake to try. The classic berry chantilly cake certainly did not disappoint. It was so delicious and I loved the fragrant almond flavor coming from the airy cake. I wish I could could have this cake ordered for all of my celebrations. Wasn't impressed with the food or the coffee. It's a cool little spot and the service was good. They messed up my coffee order but I had already waited so long I just kept it. However it was SO hot I couldn't drink it and when I could it tasted like watery, burnt coffee. Had a couple of the treats, the apple fritter was the best. The pecan sandie was a rock that I literally could not even bite into. The cranberry muffin was decent as well. Probably wouldn't go back, especially with so many other options. read more

My fiancé is gluten-free and he really loved the gluten-free brownie bomb. It had crispy exterior and a super gooey interior which is the perfect brownie in our opinion! I also had the orange cranberry muffin and it was the perfect blend of tangy and sweet. Service was okay. Everyone was nice and polite. We came on a sunday and there was a live band playing outside. It really added to the laidback afternoon vibe we were looking for. There's also a local artist selling their pieces inside. When you enter, you can either order at the counter, or go over to the pastry case and self serve most of the day's selection into wax paper bags before checking out. From there, ladened with goodies, you can find a seat in the charming mixed furniture back room. My husband and I couldn't help ourselves, and we ordered more than we could eat and then mistakenly ate it all anyways. We had the blueberry mini bundt cake, everything croissant, sweet potato cinnamon roll, and a slice of the key lime chantilly cake. You can order full cakes for celebrations too. If I lived in town, I am sure I would find random nonsensical reasons to celebrate simply so I could order another cake. read more

Bywater Bakery is by far my favorite place for King Cakes. Every year, during Mardi Gras, we order at least two cakes from here. One sweet and one savory. The Crawfish King cake is a MUST try. A corner bakery and cafe with the sort of vibe you'd expect for Bywater. The setup was a bit odd when I visited because they were doing all their business through a takeout window, but you could still enter the store and sit inside or peruse the goods if you wanted to. The spread of pastries had substantial variety, notably including vegan options. I picked a chocolate croissant and, wanting hot breakfast, ordered a tofu scramble over grits as well. The croissant had just enough chocolate, while the tofu scramble literally came in a coffee cup. I was not impressed with the portion for the price, but it was a nice flavor. I imagine a lot of businesses are operating on the margin, so I was happy to give them a visit as the neighborhood does need a vegan-friendly kind of place. read more

Went to Bywater for my king cake needs and was not disappointed. No lie I bought almost a slice of every sweet flavor of king cake! My favorites were the chantilly, carnival and pecan praline...! Someone told me to come here for good cake so I made the 20 minute drive. I found on street parking and walked about a block. Once inside I was very confused with the 3 different checkout areas in the store. There is a pickup to the left, but for cake orders only? In the center of the store you can pay by card and self checkout, but I confirmed what I wanted was not in their system despite it being in the self checkout case. Lastly towards the back right is full service checkout??? The most confusing setup I've ever seen in my life. I only tried their Berry Chantilly cake. I had high hopes as just by looks the sponge looked perfect and fillings and berries looked like time and love was placed into it. Technicality wise it was spot on, but flavor wise it was off. There was a strong flavor coming from the sponge.. an odd spice possible burnt flavor? No clue what it was, but did not belong in a berry Chantilly cake. Cannot recommend, if I try another cake from there I will update my review. read more

Love this New Orleans bakery! Feels very homey and a place for the local community to frequent. The undisputed *star* of the show here is the Berry Chantilly Cake so make sure to get a slice or a whole cake. Lots of bold and complex flavor in the cake, stands out above any other white/yellow cake I've ever tasted. When we're not in New Orleans, the closest thing is the Whole Foods Berry Chantilly cake which the Bywater owner invented but not as good as what you can get here. Also tried a Chocolate Strawberry Chantilly Cake slice which was good as a change of pace. They also offer a large variety of pastries and tried a number of items, which were not bad. The apple frangipane tart was my favorite of the pastries and we also got the brownie bomb, marscapone roll, and apple crown danish. Pleasantly surprised how accessible this bakery still is after making the cake for Taylor Swift's 33rd birthday about a year ago. Will have to come back and try the bagels (Friday only), and the king cake next time when in season. Staff was very friendly too. read more
