I have passed by Buttercup several times and didn't even know it existed... Thanks to a friend, she introduced me to Buttercup in which I had a good brunch experience! First of all, don't let the exterior fool you. It does looks a bit outdated from the outside, but I believe they recently renovated the interior. It was nice and clean, and very spacious. My friend and I arrived around 11am and we were quickly seated despite the weekend crowd. I ordered the Buttercup Classic Breakfast, while my friend ordered the Linguica Benedict. I really enjoyed my order. It comes with two eggs, four pieces of bacon (can be replaced with sausage or you can do half and half at no extra charge), choice of hash brown or O'Brien Potatoes, and toast. It's your classic breakfast and it definitely hit the spot! My friend enjoyed her order, as well which also comes with a nice bowl of fruits. Overall, food was good and exceeded my expectations. Prices were reasonable given that portion sizes were hearty. Service was good, it wasn't the best but I don't blame our server as it was busy at that time. All in all, I'm a fan of Buttercup and will definitely return in the future! I can't wait to give their Frosted Cinnascuit a try! read more

First things first. I got the Belgian waffle and added on bacon and eggs. The Belgian waffle was good. But here it is, folks. The bacon (I had 2 pieces and one fell on the floor so the server gave me 3-4 more pieces to replace it) was INCREDIBLE! If y'all have ever seen Ratatouille, this was the part where the critic remembered being a child again. Something so amazing that it takes you back to a time when things were just better. It was the PERFECT crispiness. The eggs were stellar, with the whites done and the yolks runny. Our server was also fantastic. Her name is Pearl and she is just the sweetest person I think I've ever had my food delivered by. I also mentioned about my great experience to the manager. Point is, I'll definitely be back, even if it's alone, just to have the bacon and eggs again!! read more

The service and host were nice. We were seated relatively quick. The bathroom was clean. The food came at the right temperature and not greasy, and the condiments bottles were not dirty ( which is typical on lots of restaurants with their ketchup bottle being dirty from lack of wipe down at the end of the night. Parking was easy and near Safeway. The perfect breakfast and grocery shopping to walk it off. read more

Fresh food and great customer service. We requested for some face masks and they were able to provide for us during the pandemic. I got the churro waffle and it wasn't soggy or overly sweet. Overall, I recommend getting it. For a Saturday morning, you can still find a spot easily. read more

Came here for dinner on Thursday evening. During this Covid time, we actually felt very comfortable. We sat inside. There were other tables too but they did spread them out so customers didn't feel too crowded. We both had 2 dishes of pasta and the portions were generous, bread and salad served with dinner. A few years back I made a five-star review for this place I don't know what has happened since then but their staffing must be different, because they can't cook at all. They burnt all of my food especially my potatoes were absolutely black everything else was hard and inedible. They really can't cook anymore. read more

Every time I come in it's like I'm walking into my family members house for breakfast. They greet me, greet the babies and sit me right away. Such a great experience every time. Oh my gosh what happened to Buttercup?? We used to love their food. The last few times we have come here the food has been terrible. Tonight was the worst. I wish I would have read these reviews first. Someone else had a similar problem. I was asked how I wanted my burger patty cooked. I said medium. What came out was a charred, inedible burger with undercooked French fries. I was shocked! The time before my chicken was undercooked. My son wouldn't even touch his grilled cheese. Also burnt. They have definitely changed chefs within the last six months. I guess we have to cross off Buttercup from our rotation of restaurants. Sad day for this girl! read more

I absolutely love this place. I have been here many times with my family and the food is also done right, the employees are great, and food is delicious. I normally get the patty melt. But I tried the Mac and cheese...talk about a game changer. I bought only one to try and my kids ended up polishing it off before I could get another bite. The consistency of customer service and food has not changed through out the pandemic. Again, this place is a total gem and I can't say enough good things about this place. read more

This was by far the worst experience I've ever had at a restaurant absolutely disgusting food I ordered the prime rib I had to have it sent back because it was old stinky I ordered medium it was dark and nasty all the way through unbelievable a chef would even put that on a plate for a customer and then I ordered a dessert the blueberry tart with alamode again disgusting was old gloppy you could tell it was sitting out for a long time and it had a bunch of hair on it I had to send that back as well I just recommend nobody come here I'm sorry I don't mean to hold the grudge but it was that bad read more

I am SO UPSET with this restaurant. I've been going there for YEARS!!! My little granddaughter loves the chicken strips I have never ever had a problem ordering a kids meal for her to go. Tonight, I went in there and was met with the manager, Mickey. I have never been treated more rudely. She treated me like I was a homeless person that was there for a free meal. I told her that I have bought the kids chicken strips many times and she embarrassed me in a lobby full of people telling me that she's never gonna do that for me again. I explained to her that I've been coming there for years. She treated me like I was looking for a free meal. This is our neighborhood restaurant and I will never ever go back there again. Mickey, I hope you're reading this. You are a terrible manager and treat the people of your community like they don't matter to your business. While I assure you we do. read more

Came in here on a thursday morning/afternoon, was sat fairly quickly by one of the waitresses. We ordered appetizers and were planning to order more food, but we noticed the waitress who sat us sat a bunch more people parallel to us who came in 15-20 minutes after us - receiving their food before us. We only got wings and onion rings- we were serviced last. We decided to get the check because the quality of service was terrible while the customers sitting across from us were receiving quality service and multiple check ins unlike us. We felt embarrassed because of this and left early shortly after. It was our first time in and more than likely our last. We were looking for a new brunch place in the area so I guess we'll keep searching. read more

My husband and I frequent ButtercuP approximately twice a week, spending about $200 here, but today will be our last time. While the food is good, the service has gotten worst in the last several months and today, it was just awful. The hostess, a young lady with glasses, never smiles or welcomes us and God forbid if you ask for a different table than the one she walks you to, which is what happened today. She immediately gave us a dirty look, stomped over to the table my husband requested, and threw our menus in the table. This is not an exaggeration either! We were then helped by Alexander who took our order and then disappeared . He's been our server before so we knew this was typical of him but today was the worst. At one point, we asked another staff member if they knew where he was and they replied that he was texting in the back and no he was not on break. I hope Debbie and her family address the horrible customer service so they do not continue to lose regulars but for me and my husband, eating out has gotten too expensive to feel uncomfortable and ignored by staff, not to mention, there are so many other restaurants to choose from. Great breakfast spot. Food is always consistent , no matter the time or day or how busy they are. Large portions fairly decent sized menu. A few vegetarian friendly items but not too many "healthy" options. (4 stars) Try the pie!! I'm a huge fan of Costco pumpkin pie, but decided to try ButtercuP's "famous" pumpkin pie this year for Thanksgiving .... AMAZING. The upside down apple walnut pie is delicious as well. I will definitely try a slice of their other pie offerings. read more

This was a cute place but nothing special. The service was nice and my boyfriend had the brilliant idea of getting a Belgian waffle and topping it with a poached egg and hollandaise sauce! The only thing I don't like is when restaurants don't tell you what the up-charge is for a side like a hollandaise sauce. I got the egg burrito which had a pathetic excuse of guacamole on it. It was a smidge and I understand why they only gave me a little..it was bad!! It tasted old that I ended up having to scrape it off :( they could have at least compensated with more sour cream but that was barley on it either. Terrible terrible terrible. The customer service here is terrible. I wish I could give a ZERO star review because the way I was treated by the "assistant manager, " Michelle Nance, was disgusting!!!! She was condescending and rude. She talked to me like I was a child and I could not believe this place would have someone like her be an assistant manager. She blames her "service" on the owner, Benjamin A. Shahvar, and stated that he was the reasoning behind her service. Or lack of service I should say. I highly recommend that NOBODY come here unless they want to be treated horribly. Not only that but the restaurant smells like a bathroom. Gross!!!!!!!! read more

Ordered biscuits and gravy it was terrible. The whole plate was covered in cold thick thick gravy. Told them my breakfast was cold. They heated up in the microwave. Tasted it and it was awful. Told the waiter it was awful to take it away. My husband's hamburger was put on a bun that looked like someone sat on the bun but he said it was good. The waiter we had apologized for the biscuits and gravy and removed it from our bill with the approval from his manager. His service was very good and attentive. It was the first meal I did not like. Much to our misfortune, we tried one more time. I figured no one could screw up nachos...I was wrong. What is really sad is they have a great wait staff, but their kitchen sux. ButtercP is a family style restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a beautiful yet relaxed atmosphere. Our large portions, house made soups, and fresh baked goods make us a favorite among our guests. We use only the freshest ingredients to make nearly all of our dishes from scratch. We are well known for our hearty breakfasts and offer an array of delicious three egg omelets, thick Belgian waffles, pancakes, skillets and four different choices of Egg Benedict. History

Established in 1988.

David and Debbie Shahvar opened their first restaurant in Walnut Creek, California in 1988. David had extensive restaurant management experience but was tired of working for large corporations. Debbie had also worked in restaurants since she was 15, but was a stay at home mom. At the time David worked for an upscale dinner house. They had a hard time finding a restaurant that offered fresh food, yet was casual enough to bring their children. They dreamed of owning a family style restaurant where they could get fresh home made food at an affordable price. The opportunity arose and they bought their first restaurant on North Main Street in Walnut Creek. From there they expanded into 5 locations in the Bay Area. David has always run the business side of the restaurant while Debbie, with her love of cooking, focuses on the food, recipes and menu development. Today you can find David, Debbie, and their three children working. Buttercup has truly become a family restaurant.

We came at opening on Saturday just in case there was a brunch rush, but thankfully at 8am it didn't seem too busy yet. We were promptly greeted with a smile and seated at a table with fresh flowers and morning sun. The menu options are extensive, especially drinks, but we settled on some specials - a steak omurice and what we'd come for, fried chicken (but on a benedict instead of a waffle). Our items came out ~10 minutes later looking pretty garnished with flowers. The omurice was advertised as "medium spicy" and wasn't too bad. We had the spicy red wine sauce on the side and enjoyed cutting the omelette to drape over the rice. While there was spice, the dish also felt a little lacking for some reason - although the cook on the meat was good and it was tender. The fried chicken benedict was served with two crispy purple potatoes, mayo, and a lightly dressed arugula salad that was a good size. I found the benny eggs to be a bit unevenly cooked so they didn't ooze golden when cut, but it still tasted rich and yummy with the crunchy-crispy fried chicken. The pickled red onions really added good pop to this dish. Both dishes were fine but not memorable in taste. Prices are on the higher end but I could see good quality ingredients going into these dishes so perhaps it's justified. Very friendly staff though and fun menu options (often Thai fusion)! A solid addition to the local brunch scene - and they also serve dinner :) We didn't get the instagrammable drinks with ombre color and marshmallow bears but that also seems to be a highlight of The Royale!

The first time I came I ordered the lobster garlic noodles and they were really tasty, lots of lobster and even had leftovers for lunch. My kids both liked their food- one ordered the pizza kids meal and the other the sliders. There was a few mishaps on the first visit, some of the people in our group waited a while to get their food and we ask for condiments twice before we got them, but hey it was busy and we were a large group. On my second visit I order the fish and chips and they were good, fish was crispy and again, the serving was huge! My kids ordered the same thing on our second visit and they had no complaints. Both times we were seated fast. It is a sports bar and it does get busy and loud so if that's something you don't like, maybe skip it or request to sit outside! I would come here again!
