I had a better dining experience at this place this time around compared to my previous visit. For my main dish, I ordered the country fried steak topped with country gravy, served with eggs (I chose over easy), a choice of hash browns or O'Brien potatoes, and toast. The country fried steak was decent--not overly salty--and the gravy was tasty as well. That said, next time I'd probably ask for the gravy to be on the side instead of poured over the steak. My white toast was also much better this time; on my last visit, the rye toast was so dry it was almost cracker-like. Since I enjoyed the hash browns previously, I decided to try the O'Brien potatoes this time. While they were cooked perfectly, they seemed to have cooked the potatoes with some sort of tomato paste so they had this flavor that I didn't really care for. The texture was spot on, but the taste just wasn't for me--it's just my own personal preference. We also ordered a few sweet items to share at the table: a three-stack of buttermilk pancakes and French toast. The pancakes were excellent--fluffy and springy. The French toast, on the other hand, was a bit disappointing. Although it looked great presentation-wise, it tasted overly eggy and lacked sweetness and spice (like cinnamon). I had to douse it in syrup to get some sweetness in each bite, and even then, it still felt off. I'd skip that next time. Service started out great--our first server was friendly and attentive. Unfortunately, his shift ended during our meal, and the server who took over wasn't nearly as attentive, which left the service feeling inconsistent overall. We were tempted to try the bread pudding but were too full. I've also heard great things about their upside-down apple walnut pie, so I'm definitely planning to come back for dessert sometime soon. All in all, the food here is pretty good, especially if you're really hungry and in the mood for a big hearty breakfast. Portions are definitely generous. However, I'd say this place leans more toward quantity than quality. While I enjoyed the big portions, I've had better breakfast experiences elsewhere.

My husband had never been here before, & I hadn't been here in years, so we figured let's see what it's like these days! It was definitely busy but the staff was attentive & quick -- clearly a popular spot! They have upgraded the decor since the last time I was there, & thought it looked nice! We were very pleased with how many vegetarian options they had, too. My husband ordered a Biscuit Benedict, & was able to substitute the Canadian bacon for an Impossible patty! He said it was super delicious! I ordered the feta & veggie omelette, which had a ton of flavor! They also had blood orange juice which was absolutely to die for.

Walking in & welcomed immediately! They were very kind and sat us down quickly. Our waitress was very kind and great memory. She took our orders without writing it down and everything came out right. The food was delicious and there was plenty of it. We went to the one in concord but they do have one in Oakland and Vallejo as well but I will say their service was so good I wouldn't mind making the drive out and enjoy the area and good weather to come.

1st time trying out this place and I ordered for to go! The order was ready in about 20 minutes so it was pretty fast. There's a lot of parking in the lot as well so parking was nice and easy The inside of the restaurant was pretty large and kind of reminds me of black bear diner a bit in terms of ambiance and decor. I got the biscuit breakfast and the portion was HUGE and so heavy. You can literally eat like 2-4 meals out of this. Pretty much it's biscuits covered with gravy, cheese, eggs, and chicken tenders. It tasted good but man it is pretty heavy for a first meal of the day lol. This dish kind of felt like something you'd eat if you had the munchies and was pretty solid. For the onion rings, they were pretty smackin and the ranch was pretty fire As a ranch person, their ranch is pretty legit My wife got the banana foster french toast. It came with 6 half slices of french toast topped with caramelized bananas and sitting in a pool of syrup. Pretty good but also really sweet. I kind of wish that it wasn't sitting in syrup as I feel that it made each piece of french toast really sweet. I would've just preferred all the syrup on the side tbh to control how much syrup goes on it. Otherwise, the french toast itself was pretty fluffy and had a great texture. Overall pretty decent food for a great price!

Despite some "rough edges," ButtercuP on Clayton Road remains our reliable destination. We live close by and have few other options for All American food in the neighborhood. On our most recent visit, we were happy to see the new Autumn menu. I had gone with the idea of comfort food in the form of either the meat loaf or a patty melt. A new item, a meat loaf melt, sounded like the best of both worlds. Large portion, a bit on the greasy side. Glad I opted for the horseradish sauce on the side. Not to my palate. Would have totally ruined the sandwich. Sweet potato fries were quite good. Two of the pies for the fall season were tempting: pecan and pumpkin. Next time. Past experience shows I shouldn't expect much from the wine list. Often the server doesn't even know what wine is available and it is rare to even find a printed copy on the table. This time I ordered a Merlot, not the best option. In recent visits we have found the bread underdone. Inedible! Also salads are not up to quality of the past so we usually stick to sandwiches, the low cal salmon plate

Food ServiceShout out to our outstanding waitress ,Pearl! She's awesome, remembers your order and makes you feel welcome the whole time. The food was delicious, try the tex mex,their sauces are great! Bonus-they have great brunch cocktails! They have a sesonal menu, that varies. They have pies, the chocolate silk is really good. Haven't tried the rest, but everything we've had has been delicious. Stop on by and say hello to Pearl!

I recently went here the first time and it was great. The food was affordable and tasty. The building was cozy and relaxing. The staff was very friendly. When I first arrived I asked for a mocha, which it turns out is not on the menu. Instead of saying that, the waitress asked them to make a special mocha for me.

This is our family favorite for a Sunday meal after church. We have come here for years and the kids have grown up with Ben, Nicole, Pearl "The Doctor" and countless others. The food is always amazing and makes the kids think of home and many happy celebrations held here. Whenever they are visiting the Bay we always have to make a special stop to on of our favorite nostalgic meal stops for some "home cooked food". We love this place and the family that runs this establishment.

First time at ButtercuP today. Our server was a ray of sunshine and the food came out quickly -- hot and freshly made to order. My son snagged the last slice of coconut cream pie and said the filling was quite good. The crust was just OK -- not flakey. He is spoiled by my homemade pies. Very nice, casual diner with a few tables for outdoor dining available. We will be back.

This was a great stop! We are traveling and needed a good lunch. I had meat loaf which was delicious! It wasn't dry at all. It came with great homemade mashed potatoes and mixed veggies - all fresh. My husband had the chicken pot pie and a side of cheese broccoli soup. He said that soup was the best he had ever eaten. Yum! The pot pie had a nice crust that came over the dish. It was a bit on the small side but still very good. Our server was kind and attentive. Our food came out quickly. The setting is nice and comfortable. We were happy with this stop!

Much to our misfortune, we tried one more time. I figured no one could screw up nachos...I was wrong. What is really sad is they have a great wait staff, but their kitchen sux. We stopped going for a long time..in hopes they would change. The nachos were light on cheese, beans, hamburger and they forgot guacamole?! Never going back! read more

This place did us justice. We ordered enough food to feed an army apparently. We ordered a stack of french toast to share (OMG! SUPER GOOD!). I had a regular omelette with avocado and jack cheese and bacon - HUGE! BF had a kitchen sink omelette that he enjoyed. I really liked the home fries the most. The muffins are also great! Order them instead of the toast! Even my three year old ate his breakfast: Blueberry muffin, rice krispies and fruit. We had enough for leftovers for lunch. $50 for three of us to eat. Worth it though! read more

YUMMY!! I've tried the churro waffle combo with a large chocolate milk and it was so delicious. I've also had the chicken n waffle combo as well and was equally as impressed. The hash browns, bacon, and gravy were also a thumbs up from me. So far, so good. It's been a new favorite spot to grab food from. Would def recommend giving it a whirl. read more

My honest opinion .... service was bad. We got sat asked for drinks. Got waters to start with, the server didn't come back for about 20 minutes. We then ordered our food which took 15-20 minutes but two tables had barely sat down and got their food before we even did. And left before us . Food wasn't all that good either something was off about it. Then we wanted to order dessert and again another long wait . Overall it wasn't a pleasant experience. Took too long read more

My husband and I came here for dinner Sat evening around 5pm. The first thing we noticed as soon as we walked in the door was how cold it was inside. It was almost like they had the A/C on but it's Feb and only 50 degrees outside!! We requested a booth, unfortunately they sat us in a half booth right next to another half booth with 2 customers in it. Elizabeth came by and took our drink order. My husband got a Racer 5 beer $5, I just had water. For dinner I got the Monterey Chicken Sandwich which came with a small amount of fries $13.99, and my husband got a Chorizo Omelet $13.99 with a Biscuit & Gravy $1.99 which he enjoyed. My chicken sandwich was just ok, a bit too charred for my liking, and the small amount of fries weren't fresh. Thank goodness the ranch was homemade. This place definitely caters to the seniors that live nearby. Elizabeth checked on us several times, getting us napkins, & drink refills. Now that there's no more mask mandate only half of the staff, and customers were actually wearing them. read more

Why tf did I go here? If I wanted to be overcharged for bad food, I'd just eat gas station sushi. The pastrami sandwich tastes like old meat. The bbq chicken salad looks like a deflated version of the picture online/on menu. Patrons are all retirees or guys who want to bring their side piece to "try something new" (out of the way from places people under 50 would go). The pie is soggy, oversweetened, and may be store bought. Never again!! read more

I've always enjoyed my meals here so I felt great in picking up their Holiday Feast for Thanksgiving. I was disappointed. The turkey breast, dressing, vegetables, & cranberry sauce were good, yet the salad was already turning brown. The mashed potatoes we didn't serve, no taste & very thin. And the pecan pie was so hard to cut into. It was either old or overcooked. And their pies are always wonderful. The people always provide good service. I'm hoping during this pandemic, things aren't normal & will still try again, yet will probably pass during the holidays. read more

Ordered breakfast delivery. Eggs were good, but everything else was pretty mediocre. Corned beef was pretty tasteless, hash browns weren't really crispy, hollandaise was also kinda flavorless. Worst coffee I ever had (I even tried adding some flavor syrup and it couldn't help it). Won't be returning. read more

I have been here several times now as I live very close by and overall the food is pretty good. It is nothing to write home about but if your in the area and hungry for breakfast (I have never eaten lunch or dinner here so I have no idea how the food is then) then it is a decent choice. The eggs Benedict is good but like most other item on the menu is in my mind way over priced. This is the second time I've tried their pie as it looks pretty appetizing in the display case, but don't let that fool you, it is tasteless and taste as if it is full of preservatives, definitely not homemade! Overall, I would never make a special trip to eat here but if your in the area, hungry, and don't mind dropping $20 on breakfast, then the buttercup is for you! read more

I was disappointed once again. This time I was excited to get the coconut shrimp off of the menu. It arrived pretty fast (which was good) but the taste and quality was not good at all. I hardly ate any of it. What a waste if 20$. I lied and told the waitress I wasn't very hungry. The service was very disappointing also. Not once did anyone check on me. And I asked for a side of ranch when the meal came out however it never came. It felt like the manager wasn't around because the employees seemed awfully playful and kidding around in the back area. I wish I could report better. This place is close to home. I have to drive further out for a better meal and service it's a bummer. read more

Tried ButtercuP on Clayton Rd. in Concord this morning. Food was great! Service was even better! Our waitress (first initial J) was super friendly, very attentive and just all around a hard working kind human being. The manager or manager in charge this morning also greeted us and inquired about our visit and was very kind. With mandates and vax card checks in effect. I urge you to be extra kind to workers who choose to follow the rules and enforce them. They are just trying to get thru the day like everyone else. THEY do not make the rules, but they are working and trying to pay bills just like everyone else. Just be kind. I look forward to breakfast at ButtercuP again soon. read more

Came here for lunch. I found the service to be great. Our waitress was attentive to our table, though a bit off sometimes. The french dip sandwich I ordered was lacking in flavor. It really needed salt to flavor the meat, sans the au jou and horseradish sauce. Even with those components, the sandwich was...meh....okay. Our waitress was great, just an unfortunate meal. read more

I just ordered from this place through DoorDash and I must say the mac & cheese was delicious not what I was expecting. My husband had the Philly cheese steak and absolutely loved it. He also and order of the garlic bread that comes with a fresh garlic clove like a whole cloves in the middle of it which is just simply delicious. I haven't had aoili in a while!! Definitely will be ordering hear in the future again. We have desserts chilling in the refrigerator. I went with the banana pie and he went with a strudel. Delicious amazing food and eat here or you will not regret it read more

Always been a fan of Buttercup breakfast but I have to highlight the exceptional service! I used to frequent this place pre-COVID and always had a good experience. However, during these times I prefer using Doordash to limit my outdoor contact. Today I had an issue with my delivery order, with a spilled drink. the driver told me to contact the restaurant directly who then told me that I'm actually supposed to contact Doordash. After I got it all sorted, Doordash was able to redeliver my drink but what stood out is the staff not only sent me my original drink but threw in some goodies and a personal note of apology. It's going above and beyond that truly make a place stand out. Thank you Buttercup staff! read more

In the area and decided we were hungry so why not try that place that Grandpa used to take us to? Not much to look at from the outside. In fact, I think we weren't even sure it was open until we stepped inside. The menu is a two sided, laminated list. No pics or descriptions. But there is a QR code that takes you to the website menu with all of the details. Yay, they had a gluten free bun for my allergic boyfriend! Guess whose getting a burger. Our waitress was so super friendly and answered our questions cheerfully. After ordering, he realized he's ordered something (he used to get with grandpa) that wasn't even on the menu. She didn't even question it though. He's very happy. I ordered fresh salmon with rice and veggies which was all cooked perfectly. Oh. My. Gourd. I almost ate every bite! Restaurant eating has been very hit or miss since pandemic. Short staffed, undertrained, grumpy and exhausted. Buttercup was none of these. I'm so glad we popped in. Dessert is going home with me for later! read more

It's a nice american diner and it's what you'd expect from most diners. I got the Chicken Fried Steak, Shrimp Alfredo, and Chocolate Cream Pie. It's a good place for when you're hungry and you want some good food. There's not much noteworthy about it besides it having many standard diner options. The Chicken Fried Steak was nice and crispy and it came with some sausage gravy on top which also tasted great. The potatoes on the side were fine as well. Shrimp Alfredo was a bit soupy but it wasn't terrible just alright. read more

Thirty two minute drive not worth it this time or ever more to get best service from best waitress in town Pearl and great chefs because classless white lady in charge decided to butt into business already paid for and treat customers like shit! so have been coming to restaurant for over twenty years after church on Sundays:) Never had a problem til I came w my service dog to restaurant to eat, when I am working hard to take care of my fur babies, feed homeless people and their kids w cancers, and take care of my legally blind mother, and trying to find employment! stopped in here for a bite to eat since I haven't and hadn't eaten in two days caring for others! So ordered a salad and was able to get my blind mother out of bed and into shower and clothes and out for a nice meal w best waitress Pearl, who treats all her customers like little queens and kings! So fed my mother and not myself and paid the bill and left a nice tip! One of the employees came by to put the change on the table and my service dog barked at her because he was protecting me, doing his job! So waiting for someone to wrap up my entire salad and this white lady in charge a supervisor begins bugging me as to what happened her employee got scared of my service dog! I said he was just doing his job and that tip was left for Pearl:) I said,"your employee lunged at my dog when she put the change on the table instead of handing it to me ok! He only barked once doing his job! Then she laid into me more,"we don't allow barking dogs to hurt my employees." I said he wasn't hurting anyone! she said move to the patio now! I said I will not! she said ASAP! I said I will not you all were in the wrong and it's hot outside he needs sir con my puppy! she said I should leave and I took him as she took out all her anger on me! I said I am not ever coming back here you don't treat anyone like this! people like this woman need to be fired! I suggest you boycott this business,as I will until something done about this matter! The lady in charge should be immediately fired as if you go here again after reading this, this could happen to you! Too bad because of one rotten apple the other workers will have to suffer senselessly as one human being went there for eating food peacefully and not only did you kill his appetite miss you inhumanely treated his puppy and him like garbage! Who are you to judge another human being miss, God help you and your business, and if you are just another employee or supervisor then apologize to me and remember no business no salary for yiu got it! There are plenty other food dining restaurants in concord/ clayton and it is time as human beings we got together as a community and said enough already you treat him and his dog like feces then you aren't worthy of my hard earned dollars either! This restaurant has exceeded our expectations!!! We came to Buttercup today (July 29, 2016). We are on our way to My Bachelorette Weekend, and we decided to stop and have breakfast! As we sat down, we had people greet us, and set out our drinks IMMEDIATELY!!! The server realized that I am bride-to-be... And told her manager. To our surprise, he came out with a bottle of champagne... ON THE HOUSE! And he opened it for us, PERSONALLY! That was very awesome. What a great start!! This is my first time here, but my sister-in-law to be, has been here many times-and she loves it! So we highly recommend it!!! The food was awesome. I had the "build your own" omelette! I was very impressed with Our experience at Buttercup post Covid lockdown. Lately, it seems like restaurant service is just not the same anymore and so I was a bit skeptical to take my boyfriend to this place because I didn't know if they were still offering the same excellent service as before. Was I in for a surprise! Not only was the customer service on point and phenomenal. The food was amazing as well! And although they were pretty busy , we got out order super quick less than 20 minutes and it was soo good! Our hostess was super nice and attentive and we left super satisfied. We will be retuning very soon! read more

ButtercP is a family style restaurant that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner in a beautiful yet relaxed atmosphere. Our large portions, house made soups, and fresh baked goods make us a favorite among our guests. We use only the freshest ingredients to make nearly all of our dishes from scratch. We are well known for our hearty breakfasts and offer an array of delicious three egg omelets, thick Belgian waffles, pancakes, skillets and four different choices of Egg Benedict. Breakfast is served all day. For lunch, we serve large overstuffed sandwiches, huge fresh salads, and our ever popular burgers. We also offer vegetarian selections. All of our soups are house made, including our delectable baked potato soup. Our steaks are USDA choice; our slow roasted Prime Rib is tender and succulent, and our fish is always fresh. Pastas and homestyle dishes round out our menu ensuring that we truly have something for everyone, whether you are dining with your family or on business. History

Established in 1988.

David and Debbie Shahvar opened their first restaurant in Walnut Creek, California in 1988. David had extensive restaurant management experience but was tired of working for large corporations. Debbie had also worked in restaurants since she was 15, but was a stay at home mom. At the time David worked for an upscale dinner house. They had a hard time finding a restaurant that offered fresh food, yet was casual enough to bring their children. They dreamed of owning a family style restaurant where they could get fresh home made food at an affordable price. The opportunity arose and they bought their first restaurant on North Main Street in Walnut Creek. From there they expanded into 5 locations in the Bay Area. David has always run the business side of the restaurant while Debbie, with her love of cooking, focuses on the food, recipes and menu development. Today you can find David, Debbie, and their three children working. Buttercup has truly become a family restaurant.

The next time we come, I hope to be able to sit inside. I was looking at the open kitchen and huge bar from the patio. For bdays and celebrations they bring out a slice of cake with a huge sparkler. I wanted to try the butter cake but I was too full. I didn't know what type of restaurant this was, the name makes me think of a diner/coffee house. (I didn't look them up before going, we just went) I'll definitely be back. Food was yum!

I eat at this restaurant at least twice a week. The food is delicious and lots of it for a very reasonable price. They have the best clam chowder on Fridays (real clams not potatoe soup with clam juice). I also really enjoy their fresh salmon dinner. Such a large portion that I take half of it home.
