Review #349 - 2019 I was afraid that I would run late to my 3 PM photoshoot at DUMBO so I ended up skipping breakfast & lunch since I didn't know my way around NYC very well. Luckily, we showed up with more than half an hour to spare so I decided to grab something simple at Butler. We showed up at around 2:15 PM on Wednesday, December 11th; the place was pretty busy, yet not overly crowded. We were third in line so we were able to place our orders pretty quickly. I wanted a hot non caffeinated drink so the cashier recommended the turmeric latte, which sounded really enticing, but it wasn't really my thing. There was very little flavor, but overwhelmed with turmeric. I guess I was expecting a hint of sweetness in there somewhere. It is a very healthy drink though! Luckily, their breakfast empanada was awesome! I wish I could've picked up a second one before I left the area because it was so tasty. The breading was so nice & flaky. So rich and buttery! Every bite was like heaven in your mouth. I'm drooling just writing about it. My daughter got a regular croissant and was super happy with it. She rarely finishes a whole croissant to herself so the fact that did meant that she must have really liked it! Service was nice and friendly. My only complaint is that the door was super heavy so trying to keep it open while trying to push a stroller inside is definitely not an easy task. They have a walk up window for people with pets & strollers, but it was closed due to the weather. read more

I really enjoyed this cafe! If I lived in the NYC area, I'd definitely visit frequently. It's a very cute, modern cafe that seems right at home in the Dumbo area. Great vibes, gold accent decor, amazing pastries, and smooth coffee -- checks all the boxes. I came here on a Sunday morning at 9-ish AM with 3 other girl friends. We somehow beat the breakfast/lunch crowd by about 10 minutes. As soon as we finished ordering and sat down at our table, the line was nearly out the door. I got a mocha with almond milk, and my friends got lattes and a cappuccino. The coffee was good! Not life changing and not as "chocolately" as I expected, but was thankfully smooth and had no sour or bitter notes. One of my friends, who doesn't really drink coffee often, immediately noticed how much nicer the coffee was compared to Pret a Manger, for example. The coffee is good but the highlight of our visit was definitely the pastries!! Oh my goodness all of the pastries we got were *chef's kiss*; no misses whatsoever. I tried the vegan date muffin and I loved how dense, flavorful, and moist it was. My friends loved the mini sausage rolls, herb and chili scone, mixed berry yogurt muffin, and petite french toast. Prices are comparable to other independent cafes in the area. I'd suggest coming early on the weekend if you want to grab a seat or avoid waiting in line for 15 minutes. Butler has two locations in brooklyn I visited the one in Dumbo, its owned by Ryan butler a pastry chef with a michelin star. Didn't know what to expect maybe some exquisite and scrumptious tarts and other baked goods. Also the view is really nice, I had an herb chili scone quite different and my friend had an egg sandwich which was on a brioche bun The coffee was basic coffee but the service left much to be desired. Upon arrival, you are greeted by an open green space, due to the plants, with lots of natural light. The environment itself is pleasing & welcoming. The lighting is warm & comforting & the employees are extremely accommodating. We came later in the day but they still had a few gluten free options available. The matcha was AMAZING, (I still think about it weeks later). Water was available to the side which was a nice accommodation. It is hidden away from the busy streets of dumbo, but crucially located right with a view of the Brooklyn Bridge and with OddFellows ice cream next door for dessert. I order the a turkey sandwich just as a quick lunch, but was again surprised by the quality of the food. The bread had an almost-croissant-like texture, included a handful of greens, and filled generously with non-dry turkey breasts. The owner is Australian! Butler is definitely my favorite cafe in the neighborhood. Great vibe, location and food. The coffee is good too, but ironically it's the rest that makes butler a frequent spot for me. They change the food menu every season by the looks of it. The mushroom toast was amazing, hope they bring it back. Love the chicken sandwich too, the focaccia bread makes all the difference there. Their breakfast sandwich is great too, I'm very particular about bacon but theirs is on point and you can't go wrong with truffle aioli. There's also a takeout window if you want to grab something quick and take it to the Brooklyn bridge pier for the views. read more

This place is going to be a no from me, dog. Okay, I understand that businesses are going to be expensive in DUMBO. But close to $14+ for a tiny sandwich is just too much. I ordered their version of a Cubano (one of their daily specials made with pork sausage instead of ham). It was served on a pretty tiny bun, dripping in mustard mayo. It was pretty good, but because it was the size of a burger bun, I ate it in 5 minutes. That's like $3 a minute. Anyway, I will say that the space is amazing. Big windows, brightly lit. Since it is popular it was filled but we didn't have a hard time finding a place to sit down and enjoy our coffee. Chai latte with oat milk: Not too sweet and it was really good. One of the best chai latte's with oat milk I've had in New York. Pecan Sticky bun: HEAVEN in your mouth. They toasted it for me and it was absolutely divine. It was so sweet but not overly sweet Views: This coffee shop is right under the Brooklyn Bridge as you can see in the picture with my latte. The view was incredible. Asked a staff member who was on her phone, behind the counter for some assistance. She barely looked up, told me to ask her colleagues and walked away. When I shared this with the manager, he seemed completely unbothered. I lived in Paris for over 10 years and have to say that American businesses should look to their European counterparts for the definition of first class customer service.
