I had a summertime craving for Mario's Italian Lemonade (you know when that feeling hits ya, am I right?). However my lovely friend and I were on Taylor Street on a Sunday afternoon, so we wanted a bite to eat as well before hitting that venerable Italian ice stand. Seems many many many places on Taylor Street are closed on Sundays. We were very pleasantly surprised to find that Busy Burger was open, and also served up some pretty solid versions of fast food favorites. The menu is not super extensive, but we took a few seconds to check out the listings. The most amusing-sounding items were the "Busy Blob Dog" and "Piggy Busy Blob Fries" (both including a "blob" of creamy Wisconsin cheddar). I ordered a turkey burger with all the fixin's (grilled onion, lettuce, tomato, pickle slices). The "spicy busy sauce" was just a tad spicy, so it was a good condiment for the turkey burger patty. My lovely friend went with the Flame Broiled Polish, which seems like a bargain as it also comes with a side of hand-cut fries (all the dogs come with fries). They also emphasize that the burgers are handmade and the shakes are hand spun, so there you have it. We both agreed that everything we ate was tasty and really hit the spot. The interior showcases lots of green signage and wood elements. There is an outdoor dining area that tries really hard to look like a cozy beer garden (or perhaps shake garden in this case?). My friend and I dropped on by after checking out a nearby event in Little Italy. On a Saturday afternoon, the restaurant wasn't too busy (haha) and seemed to have a good order/pickup system going. To start, you order the busy burger ($6) and select the kinds of add-ons you'd want including cheese, bacon, avocado, and more. I also opted for some fries since I wanted to have the full experience. Our burgers came out in about ten minutes and we were ready to chow down. My Busy Burger with Bacon turned out pretty good, although the meat was missing that charbroiled taste that I was hoping for. On top of that, the fries were a bit soggy, although the Wisconsin cheese dip made it much more worthwhile. So burger was pretty good at about $10 for a meal. You can likely find cheaper options nearby so I would swing by here if you want the ability to customize your burger versus simply ordering one from a menu. So I'm apologizing for the lengthy details in advance! So you're forewarned. Last night I was craving a cheeseburger. My s/o (maybe my ex now) drove us for burgers at Busy Burger. So I placed an order for us both. Of course, I called from my phone to place the order because I always acted as his personal assistant. Anyway I placed an order as if an apocalypse and the last supper was about to happen. In the midst of having placed this massive order, we argued. I left his vehicle and walked home. I completely forgot about the food. I see I'm getting phone calls from BB. At this point I'm feeling foolish and well I will never place an order to cancel it almost an hour later....Nor will I punk out from paying. I paid for the food, told them to give it away. I hung up. Someone called back. Which I may add was very sweet of them. At this point I'm going through my Mercury retrograde meltdown and they were kind and offering delivery. I declined. Today I still wanted that cheeseburger and their shake. I ordered it. Just for myself. I ordered at 5:15 and it was delivered by 5:35 pm. That was freaky freaking fast! BusyBurger is a great restaurant in the UIC community. I love that they know their clientele. There is a 15% discount off of students order with school id. I love the vivid green colors and I love atmosphere. The staff were friendly the menu was straight forward and it was easy to order. I ordered a burger and fry with cheese sauce. It was really good burger was cooked perfectly not dried out. Over all it was a good experience a little expensive for a burger but hey this is Chicago. My only critiques is that the bread to burger/meat ratio was a off. It was like they wanted to make the burger seem bigger by using the big bread. So they either should get bigger burger patties or change to a smaller bun. Also the parking sucked. There is no parking lot there is only street parking which was limited if you park in the chase lot they will tow your car. I will be a returning customer and I do recommend this place. This place is the place to go if you want a killer burger with extras (fried egg, thick cut bacon, avocado, specialty cheese, grilled onions, you know the drill) but don't want to spend a lot of time or money. The location itself is very clean and moderately trendy inside with plenty of seating and hardwood tables. The fries: I'm a picky fry person so if you're not, maybe you won't feel the same way, but dayum. I ordered the Piggy Busy Blob Fries and fell in love. They have liquid gold cheese and bacon like most places but they also add chili that on its own would be a delicious meal. Definitely the best cheese fries I've had in awhile! Shakes: I wasn't expecting anything special, but was curious about the Pina Colada Shake. Unlike other shakes I've had from other places, this bad boy had a strong, distinct pineapple and coconut flavor that didn't taste overwhelming. It was very creamy and went well with the juicy burger I ordered. Also recommend to anyone who enjoys a fun tasting Shake with their meal. Americans have been in love with burgers arguably since the first fast food chain (White Castle) launched in the 1920s, but the current infatuation is thought to have come to the forefront around 2011. There are several theories as to why the burger business amped up at that point in time, but many feel it was the result of a tough time in the economy - people wanted their beef quotient but at the time, couldn't justify buying steak. But 20 years earlier, Joseph DeVito imagined his own burger paradise, and at the age of 18, started Busy Burger near the University of Chicago campus. His concept was simple: produce a quality product, cooked to order, at a great value, and the business will prosper. He was right, of course. Since DeVito launched Busy, a plethora of "gourmet" burger chains have popped up around the U.S. Many of them have no more to offer than any other chain, other than slick marketing or gimmicks ("our beef comes from cows who are only fed M&Ms by the light of the full moon!"). Some chains are amazingly silly ("we're gonna charge twice as much for a product half the weight and you'll love us"). In 2015 DeVito thought Busy could use an update, so he remodeled, got a new logo, added a few new items to the menu to satisfy the changing tastes of consumers, and developed a state of the industry customer service program for the employees. I set out to check out Busy Burger.. I ordered, and the food was quickly prepared and delivered. And I'm looking at it, and a thought comes to mind. There are a lot of burger eaters in the US that feel that the West Coast chain "In N Out" sets the standard for quality burgers. I've personally never felt that way, and after the first bite of my Busy Burger (beef, lettuce, tomato, red onion, spicy busy sauce, American cheese on a butter toasted bun), I thought, "Holy moly, this is what In N Out would be like if their burgers were actually GOOD!" Cause you see, for me, if a burger patty can't stand on its own, what's the point? And at Busy Burger it does. Fresh natural ground beef, nicely seasoned, hand formed patty, grilled and not fried, the Busy beef patty is a thing of beauty. Topped with amazingly fresh chopped vegetables, it becomes a work of art. I like to take a couple bites of the entire sandwich, then make my way through the individual ingredients. The spicy sauce is unique and flavorful, not the same old thing, and I loved the pickle chips which are reminiscent of a traditional half sour dill. (Half sours are tangy, crispy and with lower salt than traditional hamburger dills). I loved the Busy Burger. I opted for a side of rings, which were great, nice breading, not greasy, substantial whole onion inside, and at the table we also had a fully loaded Chicago style hot dog (yellow mustard, chopped white onions, bright green sweet pickle relish, a dill pickle spear, tomato slices or wedges, pickled sport peppers and a dash of celery salt), fresh cut fries, and a vanilla shake. The dog matched or surpasses anybody's in the city, and the fresh cut fries are over the top delicious, hot, crispy, slightly seasoned. One of Chicago's television stations took a peek behind the scenes at Busy and learned some of the secrets to making their excellent patties. Both times I've gone the place was littered with cops- which, according to a colleague, is a sign that it's good food? IDK, I'll buy it I guess. As a vegetarian the options are more creative than the usual veggie burger. I ordered the tofu burger, which is a huge hunk of tofu topped with kimchee, among other things per request. It was unique and tasty, but definitely doesn't satiate any of your more visceral burger cravings. The fries are good, crispy and well seasoned. I ordered the cheese fries once- NOT lacking for cheese, at all. Try the shakes! That is what brought me back. I've tried the triple and the double each time I've come. There is a menu but you can still add toppings to your burger like jalapeños cheese or grilled onions. FUN FACTS: Have you heard of an area in Chicago called "Back of the Yards"? Back of the Yards was settled by Irish and German butchers in the 1870's. The turkey they use has a good amount of fat. The turkey is not too lean, so it holds flavor quite well. The fries here are hand-cut and fire on their own due to a secret house seasoning they are tossed in. With cheese, they hit differently. I even did something different here and mixed cheese with ketchup. I've never had both of those on a french fries before only independently and together they are amazing! Even with delivery, the fixin's come fresh on the side - they use Romain lettuce, not that cheap, nutritionless iceberg. In total, very consistent service and taste every time.
