I'm not really sure how you make a grilled cheese bland and tasteless but Burro manages both. I got the O.G. after waiting to order while the cashier and cook carried on a conversation. When he finally took my order he lacked whatever customer service I'd expected him to have. No "I'm sorry, how can I help you?". The O.G. is Jack cheese and cheddar cheese on a Kings Hawaiian bun. It was hot and crispy but I couldn't taste a thing. Nothing had flavor which is odd since cheese is freaking delicious. Total waste of my time, a meal and $7. UPDATED: received a message from the owner asking if I'd consider changing my review because he is a small, local business and this does have an impact on his business. But isn't this what yelp is for? No, I will not change my review. The owner created a very clever logo out of his last name (who wouldn't adore a Swiss cheese burrow?). On the very busy night we were there the service was friendly and they were great with offering helpful suggestions for those choosing the create-your-own option. There are two sides to the menu, so be sure to look at both. One side features six gourmet grilled cheese options for an easier choice, and the flip side is create-your-own where you pick the bread, the cheese, the sauce and any fixings. All the ingredients are artisan quality: there is bread from Easy Tiger and a gluten free option from Wild Wood Bakeshop, gourmet aged cheeses, and hand crafted sauces. Cheese options included lavender cheddar, bosque blue, brie, havarti and manchego. The sauces all sounded so amazing: balsamic apricot fig, almond pest aioli, jalapeno cilantro cream, chocolate sauce and dulche de leche. Add-on options include smoked ham, prosciutto, rosemary and basil. Since I was a burro virgin and have fond memories of France, I went with the first side of the menu and ordered the croque madame. Every bite of my sandwich made me happy. It was alternately savory and sweet, with delicious melted fontina cheese and thinly sliced ham, pesto aioli and a whisper of the dulce de leche sauce. My favorite bites were the fried chewy end pieces of the sourdough bread with the baked in cheese attached, so yummy! I highly recommend the side of olives and cocktail pickles ($2), which is a perfect compliment for grilled cheese. On my next visit I'm going to save room to try the fried pears ($4). Yes, these sandwiches don't come cheap (plan on $10 a sandwich), but I'm always willing to pay for better quality and delicious food. Be it grass-fed beef, free range chicken, organic fruit, farm fresh eggs......or artisan breads and cheeses, and I will gladly pay the up charge. It's just the way I roll. Overpriced. I'd been hearing about Burro for the past few years and finally checked the place out on National Grilled Cheese Day (yeah, I'm just getting around to writing the review but my memory is strong and the experience left an impression). I ordered two different sandwiches and not only were they both a little burnt, they weren't anything special. The amount I paid for the two was ridiculous and I've definitely made better tasting grilled cheese myself. There was only one person working when I went and he was also taking the orders so the line moved extremely slow and the food took over 25 minutes to come out. I don't paying a lot for simple meals, but if they're ready to sell something simple for a high price, they need to back that price with flavor. Sadly, Burro is lacking on that note however I really hope they're able to fix that because this could be great. I've only eaten here once and it was during the pecan street festival. It was 100 degrees out and i wasn't too excited about eating hot food. But i was hungry. I've always been skeptical of a grilled cheese food truck because i feel like i can make a pretty good grilled cheese on my own. Anyways, i ordered the burning mac grilled cheese with yellow bird sauce(my fav) and mac and cheese. The grilled cheese was perfect. I didn't feel like i was over carbed and the mac and cheese was cooked al dente and not too mushy. The bread was crisp and every bite made a wonderful crunching noise. The yellow bird sauce added spiciness and also added a much needed tang of acidity and heat. I think the pairing of flavors was a masterpiece. Alright after actually heading to it and it being open. I have to say that the place is fantastic. The price is fair, food is filling and it certainly will satisfy that grilled cheese craving you will have. In a tourist trap area full of bad deals I would have to say this place is pretty great. Location is great, a nice little corner of the south congress tourist area, shady trees and picnic tables. I got the burning mac which was just the perfect amount of heat, which may be a bit much for less hardy people but fantastic for me. Bread was butter and crispy and the macaroni had some structure to them, slightly al dente. My only criticism was with how they handled my negative review before which I found a bit suspect. When I heard there was a food trailer on soco dedicated to artisan grilled cheeses I was incredibly excited! How could a trailer dedicated to creating a classic comfort food be anything short of amazing?? However, well over $10 later after ordering just a sandwich and drink... I was disappointed. First, the cheese to bread ratio was extremely lacking. About 40% of the sandwich lacked cheese of any kind, and the parts that did have cheese, well there just wasn't a lot of it -- basically a very light spread, no thicker than one slice. Come on, the cheese is the heart of a grilled cheese and it is nearly nonexistent?! Seriously not cool. The fig sauce was very good, however, even with that, the sandwich was not nearly worth the money. Final takeaway- it is oily grilled bread sadly and severely lacking in cheese, very tasty sauce, and majorly over priced. I doubt I will go back. read more

I ended up having gouda and ham, with caramelized onions, pesto, and apricot fig sauce. everything worked well together and satisfied what I had in mind. The sourdough bread is soft yet crisp. The gouda melts well with everything. The only thing that could have really elevated this sandwich would be stacking up the ingredients. How is that ok in a grilled cheese?! The ham was fine. I got some apricot something fig spread whatever. Whatever. For $25 I could go to Whole Foods or Central Market and make several truly artisan well made and delicious grilled cheeses. Side note, even if we had opted for no meat (which we probably should have) our bill would have still been over $13... Sorry, but not worth it. To top it all off, the service wasn't even friendly. Trust me, go to the store, buy a loaf of good bread, some good quality butter and a nice aged chunk of manchego and go home and make your own grilled cheese sandwiches. Burro Cheese Kitchen provides all that any cutting edge, low-maintenance "foodie" desires: service via reclaimed storage container; endless amounts of "Go Texan" cheese and locally produced breads; and a variety of dipping sauces including, but not limited to chocolate-, preserve-, and bacon-centric styles. And what about these things? This concept does not seem too out of the ordinary, but it fits right into a niche market on South Congress. Next door, you have tacos, pitas, sandwiches, sausages, cupcakes, and burgers. The next feasible step was DEFINITELY build-your-own-childhood-favorite! I ate a pretty amazing couple sandwiches with a buddy of mine, if I do say so myself--I designed them. The Bosque Blue, a fairly bitter and stinky azure, paired well with the slightly tangy beer bread. My thoughts on the dipping sauces: Apricot preserves better suit a cheese on the pungent side, while the complex (almost too much so) bacon jam adds some zing to a more humbly flavored dairy product. At $8 (price varies depending on the ingredients) a pop, the sammiches cannot account for a full meal, as the breads are smaller in size, but 3 for 2 people will allow for a filling, but tasty lunch. And cheap, to boot. They do a good job, texture-wise, with the crust maintaining a crunch and the cheeses nearly oozing out of the sides of the well-pressed and grilled bread. My husband and I really only stopped here because we were starving and we were told that we'd have to wait for an hour and a half to be seated at South Congress Cafe. I was so excited at first because I am a cheese lover, but a little disappointed after trying this charming food truck. My husband ordered the Croque-Madame ($11) and he said it was drenched with so much sauce that he couldn't really taste anything else in the sandwich. I ordered the Via 206 ($6.50) which is an ok version of a fancy grilled cheese. I guess my problem with the sandwich was that I enjoyed the Apricot Fig sauce more than the actual cheeses used. The service was alright. The folks working there were very pleasant and friendly, however the service was so incredibly slow. So, I'm notoriously disappointed by grilled cheese trucks; from Phoenix to Nashville. But, oh Burro, you've made me whole again! My friend and I got two sandwiches (the Burning Mac and Coppola) and some tomato bisque (of course). They ended up getting to the butt of the loaf with my friend's Coppola so they ended up giving him a few mini wiches as a bonus. The butt of the bread has never been so good :). I enjoyed his the most, it was flavorful and the gouda was great. The Burning Mac had a tiny hint of spice, perfect really. The mac and cheese is the sandwich...de-lightful. I would eat a bowl of it for sure. Due to the cold it froze up pretty quickly, which was sad! But a dip in the soup was revival enough. Overall, I'm glad I was finally able to go here. The sandwiches are more than worth it and the service was great.
