I really wanted to like this place, heard good things and the atmosphere is chill, but it wasn't great. Ordered the queso dip, and although it wasn't very warm it was good. We would have ordered more, but no one ever came back to take the order. We also never got the beer we ordered. No one came to take our payment either, we finally walked to the bar to pay. When I had to ask them to remove the charge for the beer we never got, the response was just, "Sweet." They removed the charge, but still, ouch. read more

We were surprised they had such good hot sauce in the burrito. Wow. We went in during a non-peak time when the staff to customer ratio was very much in their favor, so stress isn't an excuse. My husband has celiac disease, so we selected something proudly labeled "GF" on the menu. Just to be sure, we told our server that my husband has celiac and as such the meal--while already listed as gluten free--really needed to be so. A while later, our food arrived, and someone dropped it off and ran. My husband picked up his taco and immediately realized they were on wheat tortillas. We flagged down a different server, and after we pointed this out, she took the dish away and a short time later a third server showed up with a new plate. No apologies or explanations this whole time. Finally, our original server--a young woman with glasses and long dreadlocks (I point out her identity so that the owner or manager can address this) came with our bill. She was extremely deer-in-the-headlights throughout the meal, and at this point, I asked her point blank where the disconnect was, given that we'd ordered something labelled GF on the menu, AND had notified her that we had a food allergy and the order NEEDED to be gluten free. She had a very flat affect and offered zero explanation or apology. I gave her one last chance, telling her that I'd rather tell her about this rather than the whole internet, in order to avoid this happening again and asked how this could be prevented in the future. She looked me deadpan in the face and said that the people in the kitchen don't know what gluten is and in order to prevent it we should have specified that my husband can't have wheat tortillas--on a dish that's frankly listed with corn tortillas. I told her that food servers and kitchen managers and restaurant owners are all responsible for knowing what common food allergens are, and for knowing what foods they're in and communicating that to the customer and the kitchen when an allergy is indicated. And, this is a restaurant that proudly maintains they HAVE a gluten-free menu--it isn't like I went into Taco Bell and asked for gluten-free. She basically said it was our fault, and that they're all allowed to be stupid while making and serving our food. The food itself was very average. My enchiladas were very dry. The refried beans were very dried out, and the sprinkling of cheese on them was less queso fresco and more Kraft canned parmesan. Lady, celiac is life or death. Since you seem to be currently making a career out of serving beer and tacos, I recommend you Google it. Burrito Union was frankly a 5h*thole with cheap beer and tacos, and I only recommend it if you are in the market for cheap beer and tacos. The location is great. The burritos and margaritas are pretty good. Although I like the taste of Chipotle better, I prefer that we have a local burrito joint in Duluth. For the past year or so though, it constantly smells like they're using old rags or something on the tables, to the point that it ruins my appetite. One night, my husband and I went to BU, and they suddenly had a bouncer who--standing in our way with crossed arms--instead of welcoming us, immediately asked if we were planning to drink and to see our IDs. We weren't sure yet whether we were going to order any drinks, and it was pretty weird to be talked to like unruly 19-year-olds. Food is exceptionally well; however, cleanliness is not. The table was sticky and had to ask to re-clean. After looking at other tables to see if we could just simply move you could literally see stalactites growing underneath the table at the edges. Today was our 4th visit and every single time we've been there they have somehow messed up the order AND the service is EXTREMELY slow... We waited over an hour just to get our food and then it was wrong. There were 4 of us eating and they only took $4 off the bill. When I went here, the food was expensive and not worth the money. The food was bland, terribly put together, and staff acted like they could care less about what they were doing. You are better off going to Taco Bell on top of the hill. Haven't been back to BU since. However if you feel like an expensive burrito with no taste, then by all means go. read more

This is my second visit. I enjoyed the burrito I got, the monthly special (Voodoo burrito with cajun pulled pork). It was tasty and had some pretty good heat to it, which I fine pretty rare up here, where milk is considered a spice (I lived in Houston, TX for a time and learned about REAL Mexican food). Ordered new item on menu, which was billed as a "fajita." Was presented with a plate of cold brown rice, several pieces of dried up, overcooked, cold chicken, and a few scallions. Fortunately, server gave the option of having "a little" spicy pepper sauce on the side -- a very good choice, considering the sauce is so hot it will burn your face right off. Presentation of food was pathetic and the taste followed suit. Plus, the $1 charge for 2TBSP of salsa is off the hook. Oatmeal stout was typical Brewhouse beer. Would not recommend. I last had Burrito Union in 2014 and I remember having one of the most fantastic burritos I ever had in my life. So while in Duluth today I talked the place up to my girlfriend saying "you're gonna love this place." When we got there today we immediately agreed the joint smelled like urine. The table was sticky and didn't seem clean along with the rest of the restaurant. I ordered the buffalo chicken burrito it took forever to get there and was horrible, they used way too much buffalo sauce. We had not been to the Burrito Union in years but we used to LOVE it! It's quite a way out of the way for us but I had been craving it for ages. We ventured over today for lunch and I was struck by how empty it was at noon on a Friday. There were about 12 other people in the whole establishment. It took us 40 minutes to get our quesadilla, which is uber easy and fast to prepare. The food was mediocre at best. Wait staff was slow and very little communication. My husband and I both have restaurant backgrounds so we understand when a place is swamped service can be sketchy. But that wasn't the case. I was presented with eating utensils but had to request some for my husband. I am giving it two stars instead of one because part of the meal was edible. The pile of brown lettuce on the plate was gross. We don't know what happened to this place but we won't be going back. read more

Service was very slow. Burrito meat was cold. We complained and they "re-heated" it. Came back 10 minutes later and meat was still cold but the wrap was warm. Meat did not have very much flavor. Waitress was not "on the ball" and not very friendly. I would not recommend it. read more

This place is terrible! We called in for delivery, and were very disappointed. Our chips were stale, our burritos were okay but lacked flavor, and our nachos were cold and burnt. Our waiter was on something. He took our drink order four times over a 45 min time span and seemed to forget that he had already talked to us. It was very strange. He would come up each time and say " hey guys welcome can I start you with anything stronger than water?" Each time we told him we ordered, through him, and replaced our order. At one point he just stared out the window about to take our order again, and then just walked off. I had to go the bar tender to get our drinks. The server saw me do that and then walked passed our table and said in a hostile manner "you guys are on your own". So my friends and I left. Never coming back. This is a kind of restaurant where if you are pregnant and really in need of a good steak burrito, and no Chipotle around then you'll go to. If Chipotle was in to town, this restaurant is dead in the water. For $9 after tax (for the large burrito) you get 3/4 of what you'll get from Chipotle. Okay maybe it taste better - you might think? The steak... bland, the rice bland, the beans... taste like beans; sour cream... oh yeah 1/5 of my burrito was just sour cream. For the price, service must be great right? Um... Applebees and Buffalo Wild wings is more enjoyable. Though the atmosphere is unique. Than again, they do serve beer, and if consume enough, it makes everything better. read more

My poor opinion of Burrito Union is the same as many others on yelp. The beer and drinks are good, but the food quality is consistently low. They need to change: 1. Their suppliers. They need higher quality product. 2. Their recipes. Bland bland bland. 3. Their managers. An on-floor manager needs to be more hands on to assure quality. Pretty cool place. The food is very good and the beer is awesome. The service is usually always good and it seems like everyone working has a pretty good time. The atmosphere is the best I've seen in the Duluth area. Only downfall is the prices are a little high but with it being Fitgers beer it is to be expected and with the service being so good I'd say I'll def be back. I couldn't afford to leave a tip today, but Burrito Union (lovingly dubbed Bro Union by my mom) earns every penny they make. This place is a joke. The only positive thing I can say about my visit yesterday is you can have a beer with a burrito that wishes it was half as good and the same price as Chipotles. I have no idea how the reviews are so good. I suspect a lot of stoners go there. As a matter of fact my nachos were cooked in the same manner my stoner friends did in college, on aluminum foil with burnt edges and cold in middle, worse served with salsa that makes Pace seem homemade. The burrito, Empire, was 80% rice with some beans mixed in. Didn't notice any salsa which was a good thing and the jalapeños were noticeable only in their scarcity. The steak was good though, tender and had some flavor. The worse thing was the only sauce available was cholula, I asked serve and they also had the Chinese rooster! Come on folks you could stock some decent sauces! Do not waste your time unless you want to wash your burrito down with a beer. So we were wandering around hungry in Duluth and we just happened to drive past this sunny neighborhood cafe/bar. We stopped and I stood in the midst of a fairly busy residential street and gaped. There was an inexpensive, soviet-themed restaurant owned by one of the best brew pubs (the Brew House) in the midwest. It was as if the universe had reached into my brain and created a restaurant out of my wildest desires. You know I love freshly made, fresh ingredient burritos. You know I love soviet era kitsch and you know I love beer. Wow. But how did you know to make a restaurant with all three of those things? And even more amazing you put it there in front of me when I was really hungry and somewhat lost. I really should give this place a five star review because of the miracle it represents to me, but after all it's just like an awesome chipotle with awesome beer and a burrito named after Rasputin. I had such high hopes in the beginning. Comfortable booth and cool atmosphere, but that is the about the only positives I can say. The Fat Capitalist one fisted burrito was mostly flavorless, mushy rice and black beans. There was only one small cube of the carnitas pork! I think they forgot the seasonings and spices too. My friend got guacamole. I did not order or eat any of her one bowl they brought, but both of us were charged for it paying full price on our separate checks. I do not recall ever going to a Mexican restaurant where you must ask for chips and they charge you separately for them as well as the salsa brought to your table in this tiny little container. We were never offered another beverage or asked if we wanted dessert. Our server was within view when we were readying to pay, but she ignored us and another gal dashed up and took our credit cards. I wanted to ask about the guacamole, but never got the chance. The only reason I left a tip was because we sat in the booth for a long time talking. Burrito Union could be a good restaurant, but its not as good a place to eat as it is a bar. Great selection of beers, Margeritas, and decent appetizers. The food selection is limited to 2 taco selections, some interesting burritos, and some salads. Better places in Duluth for Mexican or Tex-Mex more variety. Try Maya in Hermantown or Baja Billies at Fitgers. Few other things that can be a turn off for some. Unlike most Tex-mex or Mexican, they charge for chips and salsa. Why do that, just greedy, when all other places in town don't charge for that. Food is very spicy depending on what you order. Read menu carefully and hope for a wait staff that will explain menu and be attentive. This is biggest problem I have with Burrito Union. Today was third try. Wont try 4th time. Each time I have been here wait staff have been very inattentive. Today was worst experience. Waiter did not speak. Not when I ordered, not when food came out...and he did not bother check in later. Both table next to me and my self had to go to the bar get things, waiter was a zombie, not making eye contact, not talking, not coming back to check in. There were only a few tables with guests at the time...so if you want good beer, few appetizers, come to Burrito Union, sit at the bar. Terrible food and terrible service. I would've rather stayed home and eaten frozen pizza. My blended margarita was about 1/4th blended ice and the rest was just a watery mess at the bottom of my glass. A blended margarita should be blended the whole way through. Started with chips and medium salsa. The salsa had no heat whatsoever and also was completely bland. Needed lots more lime and salt. Tried the hot salsa, which tasted like they took a can of chipotles in adobo, put it in the cuisinart and served it as-is. Not good. My burrito was passable but not even as good as chipotle. I expected more. Waiter was goofing off and I had to get up twice from my table to get his attention. Lame. read more
