Continuing our two month motorhome trip, we find ourselves in Superior, WI for five days. When I first saw mention of Anchor Bar, I wondered if it was a location of the Anchor Bar and Grill in Buffalo, NY (IYKYK). It is not associated in any way. I persuaded my wife to go for an early dinner. I told her my perception was a "dive bar". She wasn't too pleased and I told her maybe an "eclectic bar" would be a better description. Yes...an eclectic bar. Cash only with an ATM at the ready with only a $2.50 service fee (my bank refunds all ATM service fees). We got the last two seats at the bar. There were two people working the bar and they were extremely welcoming, friendly, and attentive. We are from Texas and as soon as I open my mouth, you can see the "look" on their face. We both were very glad we went. My wife ordered the California burger and I ordered the mushroom and swiss cheese with the addition of sauteed onions and bacon. My burger was absolutely delicious. My wife really enjoyed hers, but mentioned she wished she had ordered it medium. The fries were obviously hand-cut and I assume on the premises...hot and delicious. Don't worry about plenty of ketchup. The bar had several, very large bottles of Heinz ketchup within easy reach. Plenty of rolls of paper towels. We ordered two Leinenkugel's Summer Shandy drafts; nice and cold. They use a very unique pint glass with a hole and magnet in the bottom. The glass is placed on the machine and it is enters through the bottom. Never have seen this before. Ambiance? Very eclectic with a nautical theme. I loved this place! Again, both servers at the bar were very attentive. Never walked by without asking is everything OK, or if there was anything we needed. This is a must when in Superior or Duluth. This is a highly recommended place. We went and sat in a nook . They have very interesting decor. This is definitely a super dive bar which is not my thing. Everything looked super cute but there were coloring and crayon scribbles on everything. It was on the books, the tables the displays etc. I asked a local friend and they said this is normal. When the waitress went to take our drink orders she was ok slightly rude. We looked at our friend and he said they aren't known for their service and can be a little rude. I asked if it's like Dicks Last Resort and he laughed and said no. I think she was okay after that and was like a standard waitress at more restaurants after . I would just say dont expect bending over backwards to make the customer number 1 service . I'm okay with that. They have some very interesting and yummy selections for burgers . I got excited for a blue cheese Burger. I will say that my Pattie was very well done and the bun was on point. The blue cheese dressing top.... Not what I want for a blue cheese burger . I was expecting the blue cheese crumble. The fries... bomb! Definitely get fries. Do I want to go back? Maybe if can sit outside on a nice day. The place definitely has that bar charm with the decor showing the some really cool books and drawing from what I assume are other patrons. Service was okay, our server came by when they could, but the place was busy. I believe we got one refill on our drinks. I tried the jalapeno burger which was labeled "Hot!Hot!Hot!", personally I would say, you're pretty safe. I ended up with the cream cheese on it, which may have killed the heat, but I felt zero zing. I do tend to eat a bit spicier, so that may be why. The fried were fairly bland, but they did have salt and pepper at the table. read more

Can't recommend the Anchor enough! The nautical themed establishment at the north end of Tower Ave in Superior perfectly blends what I expect from a Wisconsin dive bar along with the vibes of Lake Superior. The beer was very cold, and I was pleasantly surprised that ordering a "tall" got me a pitcher. The jalapeño cream cheese burger was the most recommended item to me, and it lived up to the hype. I'm in Duluth more often than Superior, but the Anchor is definitely worth the trip across the bridge. read more

All the glasses have a magnets in the bottom so they can fill the glass. If you want you can take them as souvioner. Breathalyzer on the wall just in case you wanna check before you get pulled over. Spectacular burgers. No muss no fuss. Great beer and burgers. A decent amount of time to being food out. Super cheap eats. I loved the decorations. The place is not extremely clean though. After your first visit to Anchor Bar, there will be no question in your mind about whether or not it's a dive bar - it is one, both inside and out. That said, the burgers they serve here are surprisingly good. The patty is generously sized with a good taste, and they're served with a plentiful quantity of crispy, nicely cooked fries. The mushrooms are plentiful too :-) The trick is to not let the ambiance deter you before you get something to eat here; once you do, you'll doubtless be back ;-) read more

This was suggested stop for lunch as I was in town in Superior, WI. It was a Saturday just a little later than lunch time and a beautiful day to boot. The Anchor Bar was pretty packed at the time. There was a group of 4 of us and there was a little wait which is to be expected at a recommended small town grill/pub. After getting a table, the first round of drinks came quick, and the service was pretty quick. After sitting at the table for a bit, the waitress came back and grabbed our order. Again, it was pretty busy at the time so we waited for just a bit longer than normally would have happened I presume. Following our order, we finished the first round and waited to try to grab a second round. They didn't come around for a bit, so we got up and ordered from the bar and paid cash for that one. With the wait staff being tied up, it wasn't too big of inconvenience and the bar staff took care of it pretty quickly. Three of us ordered burgers and one ordered a ham and cheese sandwich. The food was delicious!! The fries were hot and tasty and the burgers were good-sized Patties. The food took a little longer than what it likely would usually take, but the place lost power for a minute and I'm sure that set the kitchen back just a small bit of time. The ambiance and atmosphere was really cool. On this day, if you exercised just a little bit of patience, everything was good and the wait staff and bar staff seemed in good spirits. Not real talkative, but fairly attentive to all around. I'd go back, but I pick a slower time during an afternoon or a weekday. Everyone looked to be having a good time, though, so it was still fun! read more

Been here twice 6 years apart. Came back because I remembered the food being great. Indeed the burgers and fries are both fantastic, especially so considering the cheap prices. That said, service was lacking and it wasn't particularly busy. Server took my order and I finished my meal before ever seeing them again for the bill. One soda refill would've been preferred...still giving 4 stars because the food is top notch. If I lived nearby I doubt I'd ever go elsewhere for a burger. A+ ambiance as well. I customized the Anchor burger and the Bleu Cheese burger the other day over the phone, and they made it exactly the way we wanted it without question. Food was quick, and piping hot. The week before I ordered 4 Gallybusters (which are 1 lb burgers, 3 slices of cheese each...I was hungry) w/chips, and it was $50 even. We were in town visiting family and we went here for lunch one day during our stay. It's a really unique spot! The decoration is on theme and makes it interesting to see all the little details. Something important to note is this place is CASH ONLY, but they do have an ATM inside if you don't have cash on you. It was pretty busy when we arrived around lunch time, but it didn't take too long before a table opened up. Server came over right away to get drink orders, which were served quickly. We ordered and food didn't take to long at all to be served. If you need a gluten free option, you just ask for no bun, which is what I did. I had the jalapeno cream cheese burger (no bun) and a side of fries. The burger was solid, the fries were great! For the price and experience, it's definitely worth going! read more

We were told to eat at the Anchor bar, "for the best burger you have ever had." We arrived 20 minutes before they opened, and there were about 30 people already waiting outside. Everyone was friendly. The restaurant (bar) itself has plenty of seating and sea vessel atmosphere (though it is pretty dark in there). We had to change tables when they turned on their excessively loud music, and the waiter was not very friendly. It was at this point we learned the restaurant (bar) does not accept credit cards. Luckily, we were able to use their ATM (with two sets of bank fees because we were 5 states from home) -- so, the restaurant (bar) was able to avoid credit card fees, but we were hit with two (2) ATM fees.... Not very friendly indeed. But we overlooked that and we're looking forward to the best burger we ever had -- we placed our order, and waited and waited and waited.... While we waited, we constantly battled an onslaught of FLIES. Yes -- FLIES in the restaurant (bar). Just gross... We finally got our burger and fries. The fries were bland (no flavor), and the burger was also bland (no flavor). You would think they would put some kind of seasoning on it -- but no. This was FAR from the best burger we have ever had. We paid and left. It was not until 2 days later, we were telling someone of our experience, when we realized we did NOT get the sautéed onions we ordered on our burgers!!! So here's the deal -- this restaurant (bar) is just like dozens of other very common, local favorite dives I have visited. Like the others, there is a lot of charm and atmosphere -- and a really good history of how it came to be. Unfortunately, this one is just does not have good food or service. Amazing huger burgers at a very reasonable price. We had the full-pound burger, a 3/4 and 2 half-pound burgers with fries and one person in our group got the grilled chees and it was under $50 with a good tip. Good place for kids if you go earlier in the day. Good place for adults at night. This is a place you go for the burgers and old school fishermans warf atmosphere. We've been going here for years and when they're on their game it's a 5+ but as of lately it's a 2, at best. The service is hit and miss while the food has been mostly consistent. We've walked out without being served on multiple occasions in the past 6 months. This hasn't been a function of them being busy but rather the staff deliberately ignoring customers. On one occasion we sat at a disgusting bar covered with dirty trays for 15-20 minutes waiting to be acknowledged so we could give our order. The guy behind the bar went out of his way to avoid us. Instead he spent the whole time messing around with the cash register and counting his tips. We finally gave up and went elsewhere. We visited again tonight and were disappointed to see the same guy working again. Since the place was dead we decided to give it another chance, at least the bar was clean this time. We sat down and same thing, he kept his back to the bar and refused to acknowledge us. Thankfully a female server who was wrapping up her shift saw us and offered to help. Food and service were good in spite of the guy behind the bar. There were maybe 4-5 groups there while we were and 3 of them had to chase down service whether it be placing an order, getting their tab, etc. The only time the male behind the bar acknowledged a customer was when they had cash in hand and he spent most of the night messing around with the cash register and counting tips. It was to the point that we didn't feel comfortable handing him our money at the end of the night. His actions seemed suspicious. We do enjoy the anchor and will continue to visit but unfortunately we will be leaving in the future if certain staff are working. It is a shame because Anchor is a pretty cool place. read more

Talk about being treated like an inconvenience! My spouse and I arrived the night before our wedding to try this establishment after hearing all the buzz from past patrons. We are both in the customer service field and were disappointed. Sat for almost 1/2 an hr outside with other tables being served without even a glance in our direction. I called Anchor Bar for confirmation of gluten-free options that I had read online as we are a celiac family. The person (female) that answered the phone was so incredibly rude - laughed and said, "Ugh, no!". Then she corrected herself, saying that a burger without a bun. I inquired about the fries as I had read online that they were called gluten-free. Her response? "I don't know, I don't work back there." OK.... I inquired if there was someone else I could possibly speak with that may know the GF options. She hung up on me. Was staying the night in Duluth just passing through.. wanted to give another DDD spot a try so we did some take out. I had super high hopes based on the menu. Super creative burger options! The 4 of us each got a burger and by the time we got it back to the camper we were starving after a long day of travel! We dug in to find the patties mostly flavorless, the bacon could have been confused with beef jerkey and the buns were pretty dry. I wish I could blame the 10 minute drive for these issues, but this was beyond that.. especially the bacon. May give this place another try as I'm hoping our experience was a one-off.. read more
