I'm a big fan of burritos, so when I go to a place with "burrito" in it's name, I get excited. I walked in and was greeted by a cool looking restaurant with a lively atmosphere. Still excited. the menu, too, looks exciting. I order my burrito, and it comes out quickly. It's a fairly large burrito, which is great, but sadly it severely lacks any flavor whatsoever. Literally just tasted like rice, beans, and chicken breast in a tortilla without any seasonings at all. That being said, it wouldn't take much more than a little cumin and some hot sauce for this meal to have been significantly better, but I don't know that I'll be coming back. read more

The beer is excellent. The food is ok. The bartender service is aloof. Here are three recommendations: 1. When a customer asks about the beer, don't just point to the board (and assume everyone has great vision). When it's not busy, you can take the time to briefly describe what's on tap. 2. Learn to make eye contact and directly engage your customers. Again. You aren't that busy. 3. Enunciate your words. If you are saying "Superior Trail IPA". Enunciate and don't mumble the word Superior so it's indescribable (especially after being asked three times). Again, eye contact and engagement matter here. read more

I was craving a breakfast burrito on Sunday before a long day of hiking the North Shore. The hope was that a massive breakfast would provide the fuel needed to explore all of the fall colors along the Lake Superior coast. I had the Chorizo burrito and was able to sample the woman's Applewood Bacon one. The flavors were good, but both burritos were served up colder than the way Maddie Hayes treated David Addison in the opening episodes of Moonlighting. Note to the owners (if they read this): a good breakfast burrito should melt the cheese inside of it, as if it doesn't it's a sign the eggs are cold too and if there's one dish that should never be served that way it's eggs. It's okay to leave the ingredients out in a container to dish things up, but at least do us the favor of reheating things before you serve them. read more

There are some foods that are so simple that anybody could make it....and make it taste good. Yesterday, I had a craving for a burrito....one of the most simple, yet perfect foods on the planet. Setting my expectations at a reasonable level, I was looking for something close to Chipotle or something in that neighborhood. But living in Duluth, MN my options where somewhat limited, and I found myself on a cold and windy night standing outside of a place called the Burrito Union. At first blush, the Burrito Union looked like a harmless urban burrito joint that tries to specialize in burritos, beer and espresso.... One should have been suspicious, but i wanted a burrito and i entered. About two years ago, I reviewed a place called Sushi Sasabune and proclaimed that it was the worst place i had ever eaten. Well, the Burrito Union comes in a close second. My beef --- first, the Burrito Union only has four types of burritos; second, they take forever to acknowledge that you're standing in line; third, their flavors are bland and messy; and four, and worst of all, they would not allow me to take an order of chicken wings to go. WTF! The idiot order taker's excuse - "it would ruin them, dude". People really should think before they talk and if you cant come up with a thought before you compose your words, you should keep your mouth shut (and with any luck forget to breathe). Chicken wings are one of the most perfect foods because they are nearly indestructible. If nuclear winter should ever happen (and in Duluth most winters feel like they could be nuclear), the only thing left would be cockroaches and chicken wings. I digress. So let's get to the skinny - i had a pork burrito that had the consistency of cat food and the taste week old Chinese (which is odd because it was a burrito) and the nachos (which i had to have because they would not allow me to take wings to go) were lumpy and runny like over-milked oatmeal. At the end, I would give the Burrito Union a half of a star --- right ahead of Sushi Sasabune (which i guess there is some consolation in being the second worst place i have ever dined). read more

Wow! This was a knockoff of Chipotle. The flavor of the food was whatev. The chicken was bland. Trust me, I tried it by itself, plain. I actually had to use hot sauce on it add some flavor to it. Oh I would've added 1 more star except they make you pay extra for chips and salsa. My hubster hates that. I agree with him. How expensive could chips and salsa be? I have been going here since around 2007, when it first opened, and seldom have I been disappointed. I always order to go, and the service is comparable to Subway. Just have them put achiote pork, rice and black beans, tomatillo salsa, and a bit of cilantro on your burrito and you'll be fine. Can't say I enjoyed the "garlic lime chicken" version the one time I had it, though. A one-fisted burrito (about $6) is enough for a meal; with the two-fisted burritos (about $8), either you will have left-overs or you are, admit it, a glutton (which I have been!). Don't eat a burrito from them, however, before you are attending a special event, at least not without a change of clothes: they are notoriously sloppy, even in the "one fisted" size. I have never had their beer (I hate beer anyway) or anything else except burritos, so I can't comment on their drink selection or the other items on their menu. But their burritos are excellent! read more

I like the atmosphere here. I'm not old enough to drink but like the food mostly here. Queso is awesome. Staff spend a bit of time chatting with each other but still serve in a very timely manner with great customer service. It's a nice chill atmosphere. Prices are kind of high for what you get so they lose stars for that. read more

I have eaten here three times. Every time the food was highly unseasoned and dry but I figured if give it another try..but not this time. I will not be eating here again. The imperial chicken burrito is what I got recently. Chicken was dry and unseasoned. Burrito as a whole was bland. 75% of the burrito a tasteless rice. The menu was 5 stars (having just moved from Phoenix in 2014, so I was in heaven having a burrito place!). New menu however is 3 stars. Portions are now smaller and they no longer feature the steak and shrimp burrito. New kitchen design is meh. Nachos are now meh (grizzle meat). 3rd visit here proved disappointing. I felt a bit disappointed after visit #2 but wanted to give it another shot. I ordered a double fisted Vegan Socialist to share with my husband on our long ride home to Ironwood, MI. If you know Ironwood, you know it's the capitol of disappointing dining experiences, so usually it doesn't take much to make us happy. Anyways, we also ordered a kids burrito and some guacamole. The double fisted burrito seemed smaller than usual and was very sloppy in both flavor and presentation. The BIG downer...the guacamole. It was either more than a couple days old or not made in house. It tasted like prepackaged Sysco something. Considering the price and the way this place sells itself, the guac should be a star. I actually didn't even eat my $4.50 of it. I'd rather go without than eat bad guacamole. Anyways.... one burrito, one kids burrito (rice and beans only) and guacamole....$23. And not even organic or local as far as I could tell. I never mind the price of food if it's good. The service is so-so. Not bad, but not notable in any way. I'm bummed. My Boyfriend and I, in the past, have loved dining here. The other night when the two of us were out and about we decided to stop in and order our usual for dinner. The food, as always, was fantastic - but our services not so much. Our waitress wasn't wearing a name tag, and she didn't introduce herself, or hardly welcome us in a warm manner. She was very quick with her words and it was easy to tell that she either did not want to be at work or was not impressed with the two of us enough to act like she cared about us being present. She brought us an appetizer and our waters, but was incredibly slow to take away the plates when we were finished (she seen that we were and didn't bother to come grab it) as well as offer to fill up our beverages. When she did fill our glasses she spilt water on the table down to the ground and said "oops, my bad" and walked away. So, we proceeded to clean up the water with napkins at our table before our entrees arrived. After we got our food she never once came back to ask how we were doing or if everything tasted alright, and we only saw her again when she brought us our check. I understand that this restaurant is laid back with its "hipster" feel, but that does not mean being respectful and doing your job with a smile shouldn't be expected. read more

Just an average experience. My boyfriend sampled a couple of their beers and ended up with a Lake Erie Belgium that he was pretty happy with. We both ordered burritos, but I honestly can't say they were anything special. He ordered the burrito bowl over rice and I ordered the burrito over lettuce. However, both of them had the same amount of lettuce and rice, even though they were two separate options on the menu. I've eaten here several times. I do like the food, but while the service has generally been fine - not great, but decent - that last time I went it was AWFUL. Burrito tasted good, I ordered the Rasputin... the problem I experienced was with the size. When you advertise a GIGANTIC burrito and charge $16 for it, I'd like it to be bigger than the average chipotle burrito. I got it delivered and after the fees and tip I ended up paying $25 for a small and I mean small burrito. I hope the size changes I really like BU but it'll be awhile before I try and see if things have changed. read more

But this place comes up short-- service was rushed and unfriendly and the entrees were only slightly better than a Qdoba or Chipotle. Only reason it's four stars instead five is because the service was incredibly slow for a not so busy time. The wins: no plastic straws (or any straws) in sight. The to-go box and bag I eventually needed are all compostable. The pineapple habanero salsa. My husband's burrito order was correct and food was tasty. The losses: This restaurant is in need of a deep clean and some updates. It's been a long while since I've been to BU, and I'm never really super impressed but wanted to give it a shot since we were in the area. We went for lunch and were some of the first customers of the day. I stepped first into the restroom and was overwhelmed by the tacky floor, awful smell of what I can only imagine was piss and spilled beer and who knows what else. Around the base of the toilet I saw things I'd rather not explain but it was gross, looked wet and there was definitely hair. I felt sick to my stomach before I even got to the table. If my husband didn't already have his beer I'd have insisted we leave. It was extremely cold and drafty in the restaurant. Neither of us took our jackets off. We ordered chips and salsa and only 1 of 3 salsas was good. Other two were acceptable but we added table salt to give them flavor. We ordered burritos - mine as a bowl since I am gluten free. The burritos took 30-40 minutes to arrive and we had long since crushed the entire platter of chips and salsa. When they did come, mine was in a flour tortilla - of course. So I had to send it back. Getting a new one took forever. My husband felt terrible eating without me. I had to walk over and ask the server to just box it up from the kitchen because I needed to get back to work. Then he served it to me in an actual bowl anyway with a take out box on the side. So I ate a few bites and then slid it into the takeout container for later. When he came by to see how the meal was, he asked "how is it tasting now?" As if I could even have it the first time. I ordered it correctly and how I wanted it. I'm done with BU. We have loved this place until recently. We always got the Happy Worker burrito or salad and loved it, even though they somehow always managed to screw up our order in some way. However, recently, some bad changes. They now charge around $4 for the chips and salsa they used to bring to your table for free, and you now only get 1 refill. Last time we went, a near-absence of fillings other than rice and beans, very little of the sauce, AND our burritos were stone-cold. Yuck! Off of our list of places to go. We'll give them another try in a few months. We're pretty sad about this, as there just aren't that many restaurants in Duluth to start with. read more

Don't believe the hype. It's favored by college students because of where it's located and because you can have a beer in the residential area close to their housing. The burrito I had (Empire Builder) had a weird fiberous chewiness to it like a wooden spoon had been grated into it. Man, is this place terrible. I was so excited that a burrito place delivered, but there were so many things wrong with it. First things first, we waited 50 minutes for it to be delivered. My boyfriend ordered they're spiciest wings and they were not even a bit spicy. I got the Pig in a Pond and hated it. The chicken was extremely dry and the queso tasted like plastic. The only thing I liked was the enchilada sauce. It's too bad that the food isn't that great. A great burrito that can be delivered can really go a long way. read more
