There was so much hoopla going on in the media about their new plant based imitation Italian Beef Sandwich the wife and I just had to try it. Much to my surprise it was very good. The sad fact is that a customer does not always have a great experience at some businesses. However, what the staff does to correct the problem is what makes a business a good business in my opinion. My visit to Buona in Glen Ellyn did not start that great but one of the managers Katelyn stepped in and made my experience beyond satisfying (I hope I am getting her name correct). I left feeling like I was taken care of and was 110% satisfied even though there was initially an issue. Great job Katelyn and Buona for knowing how to run a business and for understanding what good customer service is. As you enter, you are immediately in line towards the cashiers. Got our order in quick, got a number for our food to be brought out to us at a table of our choosing. For take-out orders, there's a designated area for it where they'll call your name when your order is ready. I had the regular beef with hot peppers, fries, and a chocolate shake. For those not familiar with Buona or Italian beef sandwiches, restaurants offer them with three levels of juice - regular, dry, wet (here they call it 'Baptized'). I go with regular. I also got hot giardinara peppers on mine. It's a 70 cents upcharge, which is a trend at Italian beef places these days. The sandwich came out hot and as I ordered it. Very solid Italian beef, half wrapped so the juices won't get all over your hands as you eat it. The fries are finger length and pretty thick. Crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside. Milkshake was good, nothing different. Restaurant menu is vast. Burgers, salads, pizza, beer, wine, and various shakes are offered. Service here is very friendly! Plenty of staff, but I figure it's because of the place being new. We had two different employees check in on our table. Very polite and smiles all around. Buona is a great place to stop into for lunch (or dinner, presumably) either solo or with a group. They do everything right here and it never seems to be too crowded. Of course we have the beef sandwiches when we come here because, honestly, it's the best beef around. Portillo's is our usual go-to but this place is just better. Better flavor, spices, and options. Along with the sandwiches the fires are always severed hot and taste so fresh. Finally, the kids meal options are solid and any little ones will be happy. The dining room is kept very clean and there are plenty of table options to accommodate whatever size party you have. On top of that, the staff is friendly, courteous, and quick with the food! Used to eat Buona all the time. They've gone down hill in a big way. The fries were flat out horrible! The entire order, not just one or two, was so dark you could mistake them for sweet potato fries. How do you not notice that when fulfilling the order??? Also, they changed their fries altogether months ago, and they aren't even good when you get them cooked properly. I bailed on Bouna for this and other reasons months ago, and I forgot about the decreased fry quality when I went today. They've never been the best beef around, just the convenient one and a decent sandwich. My mom used to like it and I was happy to meet her there. I was gradually getting turned off by their quality and haven't been there in months. I told my mom about my experience today, since she's been a fan since their first location in Berwyn, and she said she gave up on them too. I also ordered a beef hot and baptized. The amount of beef on the sandwich was about a third of what I'd consider reasonable quantity. This was another reason I stopped going before, and it hasn't improved. This order based on Online Ordering and Pickup during COVID-19 crisis and restrictions. I ordered online, and was able to dial in my Wednesday burger and fries special for payment and pickup. Though I was not able to order my (newly able to get) senior drink, this was handled well at the store when I picked up the order. The orders for pickup are on a rack when ready (honor system), staff is nearby and extremely helpful, and everyone I saw was actually wearing PPE to protect us and our food. The burger was good, and recommend the fries to be well-done. Burger could have been warmer, but this could be due to the time from when it was made until I was able to enjoy it. When I got home, those were the only things on the burger. They skipped the usual onions, tomatoes, lettuce, etc. (The app has an option to leave those off, but I had not checked any of those.) They got totally cheap on their beef sandwiches where you could see the bread, so little beef on the sandwich. They changed the FRENCH FRIES awhile back and have not ordered them since. They are terrible, they have a very funny taste. Their prices are high for no quality. They have gone down hill since opening all their other locations.
