For drinks, I started with the lychee martini and then moved to the Fire and Ice. I loved the Fire and Ice drink. My husband found a new Pinot Noir that he now loves - Submission! For starters - we got the Brussels Sprouts Crostini. Unique appetizer to try - if you love brussell sprouts. For entrees, we got the cauliflower steak and fried chicken. I loved my cauliflower - the hummus and pita bread with it made it perfect. I wasn't trying for an all veggie meal, but it truly hit the spot. Nothing too heavy at all. My husband liked his fried chicken but wished it was spicier. He took half home and was able to spice it up with a sauce. What a cute little place, for breakfast or lunch in downtown Glen Ellyn! The food was freshly made and tasty. No reservations are needed for party of 4 or under. There is limited seating so it is primarily first come first serve. Their espresso machine was out of order while we were there. However, no big deal we still enjoyed everything else. BRUNCH REVIEW Tried out a new brunch spot in downtown Glen Ellyn. 504 Kitchen opened in the middle of August 2023. They have brunch/lunch service from 8am-4pm, dinner service 4pm-close, and a late night menu that starts at 10pm Friday's/Saturday's. The building had a fire a couple years ago so seeing the newly finished space transformed was great! The restaurant prides itself on being internationally inspired so the menu offers much variety. For our meals, my husband got the Confit Duck Skillet which he raved about. The mixture of perfectly cooked duck with the potatoes, greens, goat cheese and cherries was a delight and well balanced. My egg sandwich was filled for sure! This sandwich came with scrambled eggs, chipotle aioli, bacon, homemade sausage, cheese all in a bagel. While it was good, there are other places locally that I like more for a breakfast sandwich. The potatoes were good but simple. Our only other complaint was that it would have been great to have a water carafe at the table. Overall, service was great and we will certainly be back to try the dinner menu/cocktails! read more

Five 0 Four Kitchen is a newer spot in town that has quickly solidified itself as a solid consideration for any meal. We went for breakfast and were delighted by the ambiance and decor. It has a chill vibe that is welcoming and pleasant. The staff reinforces this by not being overwhelming but are eager to serve and please. For my meal I had the traditional Eggs Benedict and it was fantastic! Every bite, including the last, left me wanting more and more! The portion size was adequate, don't get me wrong, it was just so tasty that I left with a craving. Given that this visit was so enjoyable I cannot wait to return again. I've frequented the restaurant and while the service is inconsistent, the food most definitely is not. What does worry me is if a place like this will survive as I know the food isn't "traditional". It's one of the reasons I go there but some people might be hesitant on a little culture. You can tell they want to push the boundaries and we don't have a place like that in the area! The food ingredients are top notch and very fresh! Dishes are creative and Instagram worthy! The owners are hard working salt of the earth people - but the area might not be ready for such unique food. I hate to write reviews like this, but it is needed. I had such high hopes, what led me to this spot was the great reviews here on Yelp. First off, I understand there's a hiring crisis. They were completely understaffed and doing as best as they could. We waited a long time after being seated (at least 15 minutes) to order something to drink. But, we understood we're cool. Before the food arrived... Nature called. I went to use the bathroom. Pulled my pants and underwear down and as I was about to land on the toilet, a MAN walked in! "HEY! HEY!!! I'M IN HERE!!" "OH! I'M SO SORRY!" He slams the door. (Clearly, the gentleman was just as uncomfortable as I was) I could see that I had indeed locked the door. It was visible that the lock button was pushed in. I shuffled back to the door, pants at my ankles and rattled it to make sure it was shut. I pushed that lock button again for good measure. All seemed clear so, I went about my "business." As I'm finishing up washing my hands, Door swings open AGAIN!! Another guy!! Now, I'm in the open door. I say to the guy "This door doesn't lock. You're the second man to walk in on be by accident in less than two minutes! This fella says "Ohhh my God!" I'm showing him the door handle so HE doesn't suffer the same fate as I did. Now, the two of us are fumbling around with the lock apparatus. To no avail. I may not have been as taken aback by all of this is if it had been a fellow woman who walked in inadvertently.. I was literally caught with my PANTS DOWN. But, their restrooms are GENDER NEUTRAL. No matter who you are, there's no way to avoid these awkward confrontations in this element. I told the guy who served us. His response "UGH. Sorry." Nothing else. I ordered the berry pancake which is a dish served with berries, granola, whipped cream and syrup. The pancakes were burnt and I think they ran out of granola; so they threw a handful of raw oats on top. I was hungry so, I went in on that pancake. I've never eaten raw oats before, if you haven't tried it.... DON'T. It's like chewing on cud. GREAT of you're looking at add more fiber to your diet! After the lackluster response regarding the bathroom shenanigans, I decided that it wasn't worth mentioning about my meal. I am glad that I ordered the side of bacon. I got a couple of extra pieces in that order (BONUS!!) so, that's what I ate. The bathroom situation really bothered me. Being walked in on literally naked from the waist down downright sucked. I know it wasn't my fault either. There is something going on with that door. I confirmed it along with the 2nd guy who accidentally entered. The two of us were trying to MacGyver that thing together. I don't know folks. Maybe it was just an off day. Like I said, they were understaffed. They definitely gotta fix that bathroom situation. They have two of them. I used the bathroom on the RIGHT side of the hall. So, if any of you go to visit this place, DEFINITELY DO NOT USE THE BATHROOM ON THE RIGHT SIDE. All I could think about is if there was a child or a young teenager that was walked in on. If a handicapped person was barged in on... Ugh. I shudder to think about it. Tried this place on a Saturday night with my husband. We waited for like 10 mins by the door to get seated. The place wasn't that busy though. For drinks, we started off with Blanton's and Virgin Mojito. Our server didn't know what Blanton is and we had to spell it out for her so that she can go and check with the Bar person. The server seemed pretty new to the job. However she was polite. For appetizer, we ordered potato croquettes which were delicious. We didn't have any main dishes as the dinner menu is limited with not having enough vegetarian options. The atmosphere was chill. The ambiance was trendy. There is plenty of street parking spots. After pretty much everyone I know raving about this place, I finally had an opportunity to try it. Went on a weeknight and only two other tables were occupied. Our server was professional and attentive, but definitely gave off a vibe of wanting us gone sooner than we'd have liked (by now we were the only guests, but it was still an hour until their advertised closing). Food was nicely presented and delicious, but prices were on the high side. This is definitely more of a "special occasion" restaurant. Another hopefully easy to rectify issue was the smell that hit us entering the front door- slightly "sewerish". I was initially deterred by a smaller menu, but there was no reason for that - everything we tried was delicious, and the portions were much larger than anticipated. My fried and i had an amazing experience dinning here. We sat at the bar and first started with cocktails. I ordered their guava margarita which was so good. The bartender was extremely friendly and she had a conversation with us about the place and the chef. The decor was so pretty and it felt like we were on vacay. There is plenty of street parking and it's right next to the Metra stop. They also offer outdoor seating which is perfect for those nice days. I would be here every day if i could. What a find in downtown Glen Ellyn. After experiencing their food, I am surprised it's not full on a Friday night. It starts with a very interesting drinks menu / I had the Guava Mezcal and it was gorgeous with a nice kick of spice. The menu changes seasonally - these dishes were from the summer menu. U fully expect that they may change slightly depending on what produce /fruits are fresh and available. My husband and I shared the Potato Croquettes to start. Having eaten many versions of this on a recent visit to Spain I have a high bar - and these were outstanding! Topped with fried prosciutto and thinly sliced radishes and on a bed of a delicious red pepper sauce, the star of the show is definitely the perfect coquette- lightly fried on the outside and pillowy clouds of potato goodness on the inside. We moved onto entrees - the Esquites with fried Octopus for him and Cauliflower Steak with hummus and red pepper sauce for me. They not only looked spectacular- but they were so flavorful! Finally, we ended the night with the Hibiscus Custard with Mango and Pistachios - it was another beautiful dish with such unique flavors and textures. I'd definitely recommend this! We grabbed a late dinner last night after catching a movie at The Glen. It was New Year's Eve and they were able to accommodate us. We have dined here several times for dinner, a few times for lunch and even breakfast. All the meals were fabulous, but the dinner menus are special. This little restaurant is an absolute gem and the chef/owner is a local treasure. He has an amazing story, which he shared with us last night, working his way up from dishwasher, prepping station to line chef and then sous chef. He has worked at Michelin starred restaurant Acadia, also at Tzuco and North Pond. Chef Christian picked up many fine dining techniques a d skills, but he brings his own creative angle to his culinary creations. For New Year's Eve, he had created some special small bites and we were invited back into the spotless kitchen to sample fried stuffed squash blossoms, duck confit mini tacos, mini wagu steak sandwiches and petite smoked salmon tartlets. Each one was Amazing! I hesitate to share this because I don't want to make it more difficult to get a table. On the other hand, I want to help ensure Five 0 Four thrives in downtown Glen Ellyn. We have been here for dinner plenty of times and love it. Finally got the chance to go in for breakfast, and so glad we did. There's a lot of diners, and other breakfast places around. I love breakfast - and when we move to a new area (only been in the area 2 years) my wife and I will go to place after place until we find one we like, so we have been to many breakfast restaurants. This was hands down the best breakfast I have had in multiple years. The potatoes are always a sticking point. Every breakfast place loads the plate with potatoes - but they are rarely decent at best. The potatoes were awesome - so you know everything else was too. The sausage was awesome, the pancake was better than most "pancake houses," the French toast was awesome, and the eggs Benedict was killer. The hollandaise especially. Go here for breakfast. One week new and a great addition to "downtown" Glen Ellyn with its modern decor, and unexpected menu with the fusion of Central American, French and Korean items, all with distinct flavors. Bao Buns with short rib...perfect; Tuna Tostada was a Guatemalan treat (and two large servings of tuna)! Wagyu flank steak perfectly cook again with a twist of Chile de Arbol; and Korean fried chicken with hot honey. So glad to have 54 Kitchen here in Glen Ellyn. I was intrigued by the eclectic dinner menu but disappointed by what came out of the kitchen. First of all, everything was majorly oversalted, which always is a red flag for me. Good chefs don't use lots of salt; they let other flavors stand out. The tetela app was supposed to be stuffed with cheese but was empty inside...apparently all of it melted and ran out of the shell. Pad thai was....untraditional. zero sweetness to balance the saltiness, no distinguishable flavor I could pick up on...just a brothy blah. The Korean short rib bao buns where off the charts salty and were presented without any discernable slaw as advertised, which would have helped save briney blob of pulled rib meat. Korean? Not in my book. Maybe they should stick to breakfast and lunch. read more
