Bunkhouse Brewery was one of the breweries I went to while visiting town. It was a thorn in my side not to stop in Bozeman last time I passed through to try their breweries around a year ago so my most recent trip to the Big Sky state was primarily featured for Bozeman only. I have to say Bunkhouse Brewery was one of my favorites here in town. I thought their beers were creative and more on the experimental side but what really drew me into one of their beers was an ESB (Extra Special Bitter) and the one I had had brown sugar in it which really put a great spin on this beer type I've had on a variety of occasions. The specific name for this beer is the Bozeman Pride ESB. The brown sugar in this beer tempers the bitterness and you can taste the brown sugar itself in the flavor profile. This gives the beer a great complexity which made this beer a super fun and memorable beer to enjoy and drink. I could easily delve in for another time and time again. read more

This place is very cozy and enjoyable. I went here over the summer when I was visiting MSU, (I'm a Virginian) and this place probably still has the most unique beer flavors I've ever come in contact with. They have a wide variety of flavors and you can really taste each individual ingredient within them. When I went I had the bonfire blonde ale and it is definitely in my top 3 beers I've had to this day. Definitely worth checking out !!! The only con I would have is that the inside is a little small when it comes to days with bad weather. read more

Bunkhouse Brewery is brewery #202 for me. BB is in a cool little spot on the MSU campus, or close enough that I don't know the difference. No food at BB and it's a pretty small taproom but I expect it gets hopping. It has a nice little patio area out front for extra seating as well. My flight of four included: Running Iron northern IPA did have a slight pine bitterness but not too much for me. SWPFTD has enjoyed some beers with strong pine flavors but me not so much. Some of them just taste like a pine needle tea, but this one has a light pine flavor to it. Ploughmans Secret farmhouse ale had that little bit of barnyard flavor that sounds terrible when you read it but is actually tasty and very noticeable once you try it. Drunken Lullabies Irish extra stout is a nice dry stout obviously in the brim of Guinness but without that little sourish flavor. The Cherry Lime Sour had obvious cherry aroma and aromas. The sourness isn't overpowering but balanced the flavors nicely. Last one was Abbey Vibes the Belgian dark strong ale. This was predictable if you are familiar with the style. Strong flavors, high alcohol but the alcohol is not hot at all. This was a great Belgian strong. Bunkhouse Brewery is solid. Everything I had here was well done and true to style. Decent beers and a solid selection most of the time. Friendly, attentive service too. Definitely a local's sort of joint close to campus. My only complaint is the seating--the stools are terrible. No backs, too tall, flat-seated and heavy as hell, no crossbar for feet. Maybe they look good, but I'm not a bird who can perch on these things for long. That's the only thing that keeps from frequenting the place more often. read more

A fun micro-brewery near MSU campus. They had 8 different beers on tap, so we got two flights in order to taste all of them. My favorite by far was the sour, but the rice lager and dark IPA were also really interesting. Unfortunately they don't have food on offer, but the beer selection is worth a visit! read more

Generally, the beer is excellent. Since the opening, the beer list has grown and matured with regular year-round brews. If you prefer stouts, porters, red ales, and stronger IPAs then this is a great brewery to check out. I'm a huge fan of stouts but I cannot finish their regular stout, the taste was off. There have been very few times I can't finish a beer, so that was disappointing. The Otis Brown is amazing, both very dark and sweet. It's hard to find a truly dark and tasty Brown Ale in Bozeman. Sabino is a great regular beer, very smooth. The atmosphere is okay. They don't have a staple bartender that is drawing in regulars like every other brewery in town has. I don't care at all for the furniture. The chairs and tables are meant for freakish tall people. The atmosphere is dark and lacks a vibe. I wish it could feel more cozy or fun. There are peanuts and pretzels... such boring snack food. Not a lot of people know it exists because the marketing is virtually absent. I'm not sure what kind of brewery Bunkhouse wants to be but they better figure that out soon to get a larger crowd. Overall, great brewery for drinks but it needs work to establish itself. read more

I hope to update this in a couple months with 5 stars, since you shouldn't judge a brewery on the first batch... but for now, there is not much good to say. Beer: Way too sugary. I had what was intended to be an IPA. They acknowleged that the bitterness didn't come out of the hops -- but that didn't excuse the overabundance of sugar taste. My girlfriend had the Stout -- also with an overpowering taste of sugar. After visiting +/- 50 breweries in and around Montana, I have only twice not finished my beer. This was one of those times. She also only drank half of the Stout, and we moved on. Atmosphere: Had some interesting decor that made for a cool feel, somewhere between trendy and Western. Unfortunately they only have EXTREMELY high stools through the whole establishment. Anybody under 5' 4" will struggle to be seated. The stools came up to my 5' 2" girlfriend's chest. She had to stand up the whole time. There's no way you could bring a family with kids, without picking them up, and putting them on top of the stools. There are no normal size chairs or tables anywhere. This is the first time we've ever encountered this strange problem. Service: The only person working was neither friendly or rude -- he just didn't seem to care when I wanted to ask about what to try first -- which was REALLY strange. Normally people at brand new breweries are excited to talk about why they love their beer. This guy didn't have anything to say... Also strange, since the guy was middle-aged, so likely an owner. Conclusion: Unfortunately, when a liquor license in Bozeman's is almost $1M, while a brewer's license is $500 -- it's easy to have a poor quality product, and still compete with a bar. I LOVE microwbrews, and prefer microbreweries to bars -- but a few of the newer breweries in Montana are leaving a sour taste (or sweet, here) in the mouths of those of us who love them. We decided to stop in for a quick drink at Bunkhouse since we were already at nearby Bridger Brewing for lunch. Bunkhouse is a significantly smaller and quieter brewery than Bridger--definitely not a bad thing, but just know that you're in for a different experience. Since we came in on a Tuesday afternoon, there were only a couple of other patrons around. The interiors are very dark and woody, so you feel like you're enjoying a drink in someone's cabin tucked away in the Rockies. I did notice that they had a patio under construction, so you might be able to enjoy your beer in the sunshine sometime soon. The bartender (brewtender? Kegtender?) was a sullen fellow of few words. He poured us our beers, and then went back to chatting with a different customer at the bar (a friend, perhaps?). Not my typical experience when at a brewery, but I'm not going to complain as long as I get a well-poured beer at the end of the interaction. I got the Remittance Ale, which is an English Bitter (but not an English Special Bitter, aka ESB--you need to be over 4.8% ABV for that title). It was a decent pour, nothing terrible but nothing spectacular either. My boyfriend got the Sabino Red, which had some nice caramel touches to it. Again, not the best red ale I've had in my life, but not offensive by any means. Overall, Bunkhouse produces decent beer, but neither of the ones I tasted really blew me away. On the other hand, several other breweries in Bozeman definitely dazzled me with their fare. If you're on a tight schedule for your beer-drinking, maybe give this one a pass. read more

Very nice location for a tap room for those looking for a quieter atmosphere to enjoy a beer or two. The interior is small but nicely decorated with a great outdoor patio area. There is no food available in the location itself other than free pretzels and peanuts at the bar and Jimmy John's next door. I have been here twice now and tried four different beers - the stout, porter, IPA, and special bitter. The beers here are mostly described as English Style and accurately so with generally lower alcohol % and IBU than American style counterparts, and I give a lot of credit to the brewers here for doing their own thing and not just following along with the prevailing trends in craft brewing. At the time I visited, there were seven beers on tap with a nice variety from a lighter hefeweisen to an IPA to dark beers like the stout and porter. The IPA, in particular, is very tasty but much lighter and less hoppy than many American IPAs whose brewers sometimes seem to be competing with each other to see who can cram the most hops into their beers. If you absolutely must have that imperial double IPA with 10% ABV and 100+ IBU (I do enjoy these myself on occasion!) you're probably better off going elsewhere. read more

The beer. To put it simply, it's great. I never expect to be impressed by a brewery when they initially open. The flavor and style of beers was a pleasant surprise. The Long Tom Coconut Porter is an absolute favorite and I will definitely be back to have another pint. The atmosphere. What is up with the stools made for giants? At 5'4 I nearly needed a boost to get seated. Once I was enjoying the weather at a new elevation I realized that I couldn't feel my legs anymore due to odd angle at which they were forced to hang. The only choice I had was to push the gigantic stool aside and stand for the rest of my visit. The service. It has greatly improved and I just keep liking this place more and more every time I return. read more

It's a fairly simple, straight-forward hole-in-the-wall type of place, but the beer speaks for itself. Some of my favorite beers in town!

We took a couple of Oregonian beer snobs out to Bunkhouse and they walked away happy. And not only happy, but saying nice things about both the beer and the venue. Nick, our host (the brewmaster), was fantastic about talking us through the beer and making sure we were well taken care of. If you're looking for great beer and great company, look no further. I know that brewery just opened up, but I can say that it was a great place to enjoy a beer with my co-workers. The beer tasted great. I did not try the nitros but I tried everything else. The Yearling IPA was my FAV. The stools were comfy and the atmosphere was great. Loved the bartender behind the counter.
