Yeah, it really sucks to come visit back home. To talk up a favorite memory and childhood place only to be extremely disappointed. I ordered 4 burgers, 3 kids and 1 adult burger. Basically I took my kids here. We were told it'd be about 30 minutes for food because they were backed up. I figured that wasn't such a big deal. Totally fine. But, jesus. I MEAN GOOD. GRIEF. We waited 45 minutes. I could see my burger sitting in the hot hold, while other numbers got called. We were 110, 116 got called, then 115, then 113. So I went to check. When I asked if maybe we got skipped he said, no I'm waiting on the kids burgers. So the burger sitting and waiting was mine. I said, ok. Sat down and watched the window. ‍ Ten minutes passed before our number was called. Thank goodness, I go up grab our stuff. When I noticed there was no ranch on the side like I asked for, pretty sure was charged for, the expediter said yes, I'll get it. Cool. I took the food to the table and grabbed the ranch. Instantly the avacados I asked for on one of the kids burger was put on another kids burger. He was fine with it but had already taken a big bite out of it. I took my daughter's burger up to get fixed, no biggie. I couldn't hide my snarky comment when the guy said, yeah sorry for the wait. I said, "I know 45 minutes on 3 kids burgers is f*ucking ridiculous." Grabbed the burger, sat down got kiddos situated and finally picked my burger up. A large party just walked in the door during all this. I watched them order and tried to eat my burger. Instantly I noticed my burger bun was hard on top. The bottom bun was soggy. Mustard and ketchup was dripping out. I tried. I really did try to eat it but I couldn't. I spent more time grabbing the napkins to clean my burger up but I finally set it to the side. I checked on my kiddos. Their burgers were fresh and good. So I figured I'm not gonna lose my cool. I went up to the register and when I saw a girl come up to it I asked for a refund for just my burger. She said, what was wrong with it. I said, the bun was soggy on the bottom and rock hard on top. The mustard and ketchup killed it sitting in the window while we waited for the kids burgers. Which were good, so I'd just like a refund for mine. Under her breath she said something, I asked her what? She said, "Well, a family came in so it's not our fault." A family came in so it's not our fault. What the heck were we? A family of four. It was me my kids and my nephew. I am at my wits end trying to keep the kiddos entertained all day, driving from Ft. Worth on my own for a week. I just wanted to experience some nostalgia and share it with them but another family seemed more important. What happened to the food service industry? Own it. We messed up. We are sorry. She did offer to remake it, in a weirdly offended way, "You want us to remake it or like what?" I said, "Nooo... it took 45 minutes for 3 kids burgers. I dont want to wait again. I'm good." The PB&J burger I had was really good while my coworker ordered the Patty Melt which also looked very good. We shared an order of fries and after adding a couple of soft drinks the bill was over $40, kind of pricey for a place where you order from a kiosk. But still the food was good and the atmosphere is nice. It looks like the bar is being renovated. Used to love this place. The fried zucchini was the best. Stopped in to grab some zucchini this evening. Very excited for the zucchini. Let me tell you, it is no longer the amazing, crazy good, tasty rounds. It is now boring, sub-par, zero flavor sticks. The same sticks that you can get at Peter Piper Pizza. Are you kidding me Bun Huggers!?!?!? I have littles and that is the only barely edible thing they have besides pizza. The condiment bar also gone, along with the yummy pickles. Why change something so good? Sadness. Not the worst not the best, they offer burgers & sandwiches but I didn't realize I should've asked if my sandwich would be warm, instead I had the most disappointing sandwich, it was cold & the bread was hard, I only hate half of it. The cashier was nice but you go pick up your food at the counter which is fine, but for the price they charge I would've thought they'd bring your things to you, and all of the cutlery & cups are plastic only, which again for the price you pay is unexpected. I am so sad. We have come to Bun Huggers off and on for over 30 years but this last visit will be our last. It is NOT the same as it used to be and it is VERY pricey for mediocre at best food. The burgers are no longer cooked over an open flame. They're grilled and very bland. Their fries are poor and the oil used was old. I used to love the zucchini but it's completely tasteless now. We regretted our decision to stop here. We paid $50 (!!) for a burger with mandatory fries and a soda. Crazy expensive for a bland taste. Hard to believe I first visited this place 40 years ago. Nostalgic ambiance and existing wooden tables still fill the place giving it an old feeling. No more make your own burger toppings bar which was their big draw and one size only patty. Now menu featuring wedge salad, chicken sandwichs, and French fry variations. Over priced and overcooked. Bunhuggers has been a longtime favorite (we've been coming here for over 40 years) but after our visit on 1/20/25 for lunch I'm prety sure I won't be going back. The first thing we encounterd is that the "fixins' bar" (tomatoes, lettuce, onions, pickles, peppers and a wide variety of condiments) has been removed and was replaced with the order/cashiers station. This had always been one of the big draws of this place. The menu is unrecognizable from what was offered for decades and the pictures of the various burgers and sandwiches are not at all representative of what you actually get. We ordered a couple of burgers (about $15 each), an order of fries, an order of onion rings and a couple of sodas. Total price $50 including tip. I ordered a California Burger with bacon and avocado. The burger was small (and I mean REALLY small) and so over cooked as to be hard to chew. There were a couple of slices of bacon but I had to remove the large mound of shredded iceburg lettuce to find the miniscule shmear of avocado. My wifes burger, the "Pepper Hug" was marginally better but was also overcooked and as small in diameter as a basic McDonald's cheeseburger. Been coming here since a kid in the early 2000's. Stopped by on my recent trip to flagstaff and it was terrible. Service was awful I wanted to shake the girl at the register to see if I could get her to wake up. Buns were ice cold and hard. No more veggie burger which was my girlfriend's favorite. I had high hopes for Bun Huggers because it's been in Flagstaff for a really long time and everyone says it's amazing. They were wrong. The food took a really long time to come out and when it did, it was very underwhelming. The meat was dry and had no seasoning. I got the hula burger and it was not worth $14. Please note this cost doesn't include a side. My friend got the cheesy fries and they were dry, chewy, and cold. I don't know how it was all three, but it was. By the time we got the cheesy fries the nacho cheese on top was already congealed. It was bad. The best thing about this place is the topping bar where you have unlimited access to lettuce. The ambiance is definitely of old dive bar quality. Tables are wooden and have graffiti all over. I would not return. read more

Haven't been in awhile - not sure why. Went for lunch last week (Wednesday) and noticed the "new" ordering process - then the manager told us we could order full menu in the bar as well... let's go! Bartender took our drink & food order - burger in a bowl (aka lettuce wrapped) and burger with just cheese and tomato. Food came out as burger on bun and burger with various sauces on it. We told her that the burgers weren't what we ordered and her comment was "what do you want me to do?" We asked that the one burger be put in a bowl (lettuce wrapped) and we would wipe the sauces off of the other burger - she then added "I don't work back there it's not my fault". She then told us we were rude and we had an attitude! There were even several of her apparent "regulars" across the bar that she then went and smacked talked with about us. Talked to the manager who asked if he could comp the lunch - and we said it's not about the money, it's about letting him know what's going on in his establishment. I really hate to say this, but this is just such a bust and I'm sure lives off of tourism at this point. I worked here for a year when I went to NAU and it was a fun place but to see the prices go up to $13.99 for a bacon & cheddar that hasn't changed since, would explain why the locals don't eat here. Still has a nice char and the taste is consistent, but no one wants a 1/3 lb patty cooked well done for that price. I am happy to say that we picked wisely! Although there was a cast of characters at the bar, they were all friendly, cheerful, and pleasant! My wife ordered the little hugger while I chose the patty melt. My wife and I split an order of onion rings. The dishes came out quickly & piping hot. The bartender knew her way around the bar, making my wife an excellent mudslide while I enjoyed a couple Samuel Adams. Overall, this place ranked fairly high for being just a local joint. I have been going to Bun Huggers since I was in college in the mid 80's. This was truly the best burger in Flagstaff. I walked in two weeks ago and immediately noticed the new menu. When I asked the cashier about the Big Hug burger, she said they don't have them anymore and the burgers are all 6oz and not ala carte any longer. She also said there was no wood fired grill anymore that it had been replaced by a cooktop. The condiment bar was gone, I'm sure COVID was to blame. We ordered our food and drinks and we reported that the soft drinks were flat. The C02 was empty and no one really knew how to change it, because we never did get a carbonated beverage. The food arrived and it was just ok. Nothing special. The inside was the same as the 80's, but with the mediocre food it seemed very tired and in need of a total refresh. I think that the wood crate seating works great with the wood grill and the smell of burgers cooking, but it is not a great match for the new steel cooktop. The original sign still hangs outside that says charcoal broiled hamburgers. I don't anticipate ever going back there as I will be searching for the new best burger in Flagstaff as a replacement.
