Selling our Subaru was much more complicated and difficult than I'd expected, so I'm glad we used the Buggy Bank to help us through the process. I only give four stars because the flat rate price was higher than I had hoped to pay, but ultimately, I think it was worth it. They did a great job detailing the car for a very reasonable price, and we put it on the market at the rate that seemed to be the going rate on Craigslist. Then the mechanical/computer problems started, and we had to pull it off the lot a few times to fix an EGR failure in order to pass the smog test. Jerry was very helpful and understanding the whole time, and coached us on lowering the price conservatively when it wasn't selling. They also did touch up cleaning after the shine wore off. We finally sold the vehicle at the tail end of the six week window, but never felt any pressure from the Buggy Bank to cut corners to get it off the lot. I felt that Jerry was fair and honest the whole time. (On the other hand, I would give Subaru a one star rating--what an expensive nightmare to get that thing fixed!) read more

I brought my Honda from the Buggy Bank and am glad I did. It had high mileage, but it only had one owner. That's what I really like about the Buggy Bank is how many of the cars are from their original owner and well-maintained, so as a consumer you know what you are getting. If you live in the Bay Area and need to sell your car, I definitely recommend Buggy Bank in Berkeley. Recently my husband and I sold both of the cars that we owned before getting married and bought one together. We posted our cars online and just didn't get any response. Years before I'd found the Buggy Bank when I was looking for a car and decided I'd give it a try now that I was selling. All the guys there are knowledgeable and helpful. They even contract with a guy who can detail your car on site. As part of the service they do an exterior wash every week, take all calls and deal with interested parties who want to take a test drive or do a check with their mechanic. It took a little while for my car to sell, and they advised me on pricing and any other questions I had every step of the way. When they found a buyer, all I had to do was show up, sign the paperwork and pocket the money. They were so helpful in handling the transaction, including telling the buyer "this is where you give her the money." They handled all the paperwork and transmitted it to the DMV even before I left the lot so I didn't have to worry about liability. If your car is in decent shape and you're looking for a hassle-free way to sell it for market price, this is the way to go. read more

On the one hand, it really sucks sitting around all day Saturday waiting for people who don't show up to test drive your car. It is much more pleasant dealing with people over the phone and meeting them for the first time as they hand you a check. On the other hand, the cost for handing over your keys at the Buggy Bank is $400 smackers. Also, they have a website but the main marketing they do is to post an ad to craigslist for you. In my case, I brought the car in Wednesday and they didn't get my ad up 'til Sunday night. Then after the ad expired, they didn't manage to get another ad up for a week. That's two weekends with no ad. People shop for cars on the weekend. So I didn't feel like I got a whole lot for my money but I suppose for some people even one time on a test drive with some tweaker getting your car up to 60 on a side street then doing a "brake check" is too much. read more

Recently had a couple of bad experiences at the buggy bank that are worth mentioning. They post information on their web site and on the cars that is not accurate regarding the cars equipment. I went in to check out several cars because of what was listed on their web site and then found the car not to be equipped with what had been listed. When brought to the attention of the BB staff they first stated the owner had told them about the extras the car came with. After telling them the owner said the BB wrote the ad, they then said you can't go by anything listed you have to check it all out for yourself. Why advertise something or anything if it is not correct?? In the end we bought a car that I thought had some important safety features that it did not have because I trusted in the ad. I got a message from Buggy Bank regarding my review. I was off base to call them Jerk-offs, but the wholesaler hassling me and the ad thing, well, I stand by what I said, I sent t two of my neighbors to Buggy Bank, & lots of people I know have gotten good results using them. I do not blame Buggy Bank because nobody wanted to buy my truck. it is nice to not have to deal with showing your car to people & fool around with storage, but I thought that Leroy & Jerry were pretty much jerk-offs. I had to hassle them to keep the craigslist ad up, they would let it expire, so I finally just kept my own ad running. Another thing they did that was sleazy was they gave my phone number to a wholesaler that was a real pain in the ass, who had not even seen the car, but kept trying to screw me out of it. The asshole called up at least ten times. On the positive side of the equation, they let me keep the thing longer than I paid for, which saved me some hassle, that was likely due to the fact that they are slack assed. In the end, I gave up on them, & sold the car myself. read more

The best $310 I've ever spent. After weeks trying to sell a below market PT Cruiser using Craigslist and CarGuru, I gave Buggy Bank a try. My only regret is having sold two previous cars on my own for waaaaaaay more work and less money. I brought the car in late morning Labor Day, completed all the paperwork including valuation and title check in 30-40 minutes while Dana deftly helped several customers looking to buy. An interested buyer called around 5pm. We agreed on a very reasonable price (though it was still higher than I previously asked), and closed the deal that day. Rather than charge the (now giddy) buyer a minimal fee to handle the paperwork, Jerry suggested AAA which provides the service free to members. Jerry's heart is in what he does. Pretty sketchy. You pay a bit of money to list your car and then learn to have it cleaned and detailed, you pay another $100-$200 for the owner's other business to take care of cleaning it. My car was damaged not once but twice on this lot- the hood latch broke off and there was a huge paint chip that came off my car. Yeah stuff happens, but sadly no one ever told me about it until I came in and wondered why my car hadn't sold after three weeks. (giant paint chip and broken hood latch didn't help!) I called multiple times every week to ask how it was going and no one ever told me there was damage to my car. If you do list your car here, physically go in and check on your car at least 1-2 times a week to make sure nothing is broken/chipped or otherwise damaged. read more

Can I give more than five stars? I just had a phenomenal experience selling my BMW through Buggy Bank. Jerry knows his stuff, and in the world of used cars where dealers want to pay as little as possible and selling directly via Craigslist is a mine field, having someone like Jerry helping you is an amazing thing. I opted to have Buggy Bank detail my car and it looked as good as new. And where the dealer offered me virtually nothing for trade in, Jerry recommended pricing my car higher than I thought I could, and I sold my car in three weeks. I checked in each week to see if there had been much interest and five days before it sold, Jerry advised me to get the smog check done. He said my car was getting a lot of test drives and it would sell within days. And it did. The day my car sold, the prospective buyer made an offer that I accepted, and we agreed to meet ASAP. I was driving from San Francisco and there was heavy bridge traffic, and GPS was telling me I'd arrive at Buggy Bank at 6:05pm, five minutes after they close. I called Jerry to see if he could stay late and he explained that while he normally would, that night he had to leave at 6pm for an important appointment. So I called the prospective buyer and we made a vague plan to meet the next day. But at 6:15pm, Jerry called me to say he could be back at Buggy Bank at 8pm, two hours after they close, if the buyer wanted to meet that night. The buyer agreed, the three of us met at Buggy Bank at 8pm, Jerry showed up with gelato and extra spoons, and I sold my car. This place is amazing. I brought a dirty, furry, smelly vehicle to them and it was sold within 24 hours. Jerry, Donavan, Mike were all great to work with--they are a great team. Mike even picked up a part I needed for the car and Donovan drove me to BART. Great Service!! But the 5th star was earned because of Charles the detailer. For an incredibly reasonable price he was able to clean many years of fur and dirt out of the van. It even smelled good after he was through. Even if you just need a detail, and don't plan to sell your car, contact them for Charles. I would really give them 3.5 if possible. Just sold my car with these guys today. They Will Sell Your Car....and within a reasonable time frame. I do have a couple of complaints. 1. They really are not good at getting back to you etc. Once they take your money, they don't really care. 2. They have a water drainage problem on the property. My car ended up getting some ants in it during its time there. Fortunately the guy I sold it to did not really care. There was another customer that was complaining about a moist/moldy smell in a car and it sabotaged a sale. I have a feeling its a consistent problem for cars being on that lot. They need to figure out some way to deal with the water and the bugs that come with it. It could hurt the sale of your car. read more

I am not sure why Buggy Bank gets such a high rating. In short, with so many flaws I witnessed there, it is not the best place for the car-sellers. Sleazes may sound harsh to you, but what can I can? You are the judge. As of 5/4/13, did not know the management sent me a message. I do not frequently visit Yelp unless it is necessary. Having said that, I sold my vehicle one week after my posting ads on line without help from Buggy Bank last month!!!! Since I can do so being so risk-averse, you guys can do so being careful choosing serious prospective buyers. As for the management, the experience there was such a trauma to me on site. The thought of having to be reminded of the repulsive traumatic experience there and talking again about it with the management makes me sick to my stomach. Hence, I am unable and not ready to speak to any one (even managerial people) engaged in Buggy Bank ever again until my trauma dissipates.... But I was able to sell my vehicle on my own by myself last month within one week; therefore,I do not see any point of contacting the management at this stage. I saved at least 400 plus bucks and sold my vehicle by myself w/out help from Buggy Bank! Thank you, Buggy Bank! You guys forced and encouraged me to sell my vehicle on my own as an end result! This IS the place to sell AND buy quality used cars. I've been on both ends of the deal over a four year period and consistently found them highly professional, honest, not 'hard sells' and a place you can actually find great used vehicles. Saves you the seller all the headache of showing your own car..you're called only when they have a viable potential buyer, you negotiate on the phone and come down to meet them to close the deal. Any questions about the title, insurance etc..Jerry, Dana and their staff are amazingly knowledgeable, they walk you through the entire transaction and the $410 flat fee you pay up front is well worth it. And they go the extra mile: they had a serious out of town potential buyer, were unable to reach me (until the end of the day as I'd had to turn my cell phone off) and Jerry stayed open an additional hour to give me time to get over, to walk me through the final sale and to give further instructions to the buyer. you just have to love the buggy bank. it's basically a parking lot where owners can display their used cars for sale and potential buyers can view them and even take them for test drives. they've beefed up their team there, and they operate a pretty tight ship. i've both bought and sold a car there, and both times the experience was both quick and efficient. the buggy bank is such a great concept, very berkeley, and you can find some great deals there, cheaper than buying a used car from a dealer and easier than having to trawl craigslist's listings of private sellers. owners leave their keys in the office, set a price, and then forget about their cars, until a buyer expresses interest. then you conclude the transaction as normal. i bought my first-ever car here, and then proceeded to drive it into the ground on trips up to tahoe, where it finally died at the summit of donner pass. oh, the memories. read more
