Jerry was the middleman for everything, which meant we didn't have to deal with phone calls from and test drives for potential buyers. As an elderly couple this helped us feel safe and free from worry about possibly sketchy buyers. It also saved us a lot of time, stress, and energy. When potential buyers come to the Buggy Bank lot, Jerry handles all their questions and lets them take test drives after checking their licenses, etc. If someone wants to buy, he tells us the amount of their offer and we're the ones who decide whether to accept it or not. Do NOT take your car here. We dropped off our 2010 Audi S4. We just went to sell the car to the buyer and find out our car had been STOLEN 2/20/21. Today is 2/24/21 and NO ONE has notified us or noticed the car was gone. The last person with the keys didn't bother to return the keys and likely turned in a fake ID. I had to update this to note that the Buggy Bank's response opining that a malfunctioning side view safety mirror is "not a major issue" might be the most ridiculous Bs I've heard from somebody (nominally) in the car business. You're a used car transaction coordinator, not a safety engineer. Drivers must be able to adjust to achieve clear side views to reduce the chance of collisions. Also, I wonder how Oceanworks, a preeminent local mechanic specializing in Japanese cars in Berkeley for decades, would feel about your opinion that their quote was "ridiculous". Besides this nonsense, it should be your ethical responsibility to ensure that transactions occurring on your watch are made with known issues disclosed to all buyers. I think you failed on that here. If I were the eventual buyer of that Lexus, and I found out the mirror was broken and that the seller and you both knew about it but didn't say anything, I don't think that would be very good for the Buggy Brand. I just traded in the car I bought here 1.5 years ago. The transaction was not problematic but the Mazda I bought was nothing but problems. It was a terrible purchase. I drove that car for 10k miles total because it spent most of its time in the shop. It had a shifting problem that surfaced a few days after I bought it. No mechanic was able to identify the correct problem. Finally, a reputable transmission mechanic told me to get rid of it because figuring out what's wrong would be an expensive guessing game. Did not feel they are following COVID safety protocols and came away worried about my health. This was my first visit to this business, which was recommended by my Oakland repair shop. I was masked and was speaking to the representative outside when he asked me to come into their office. It was a small space which had an air conditioner which was recirculating air. The big issue was that the representative had a mask on but it quickly creeped below his nose and mouth without him pulling it up. A mask is useless unless it fits well and secure. My experience in a nutshell to save time: Called in to test drive a car and was given the owners number to schedule with them directly. Called him and we aranged a time to meet at Buggy Bank since the lot was overbooked and there was no room for his car. I did a 2 hour trip down each way at the aranged time for a test drive. The owner found a spot in the lot early that day and left it there. Gave the lot attendant my CDL and credit card but he would not allow the test drive because the address on my CDL was not local. That's it. I never got to test drive the car. I could have just called the owner for a private sale since I had his number. Buggy Bank is already paid anyhow. But it was ust too much hassle. A middle man service that makes things more difficult then just going to a lot on your own or just dealing with the owner. They are overbooking the listings like airline flights do and many of the cars say 'out by owner' but it really means there is a waiting list. A real waste of time. I would recommend calling in and asking a few questions if you want to see how stressed and unorganized this place truly is. read more

Jerry went above and beyond in helping us with a smooth transaction. We were able to sell our luxury car, that still had a loan on it. Jerry helped us submit all the paperwork to the lienholder and the DMV, and it was all handled on site. All we had to do was park the car there, make sure it was priced to move, and then negotiate the final sale price with the buyer. It was much easier and safer than doing it by ourselves. The buyer also seemed very satisfied with the whole experience. We did have to lower the price 3 times before the car sold, and we got 5-10% less than Blue Book. But our car sold within about 4 weeks and we got a great overall value from Buggy Bank. Our advice is make sure that when you list with them, you stay on top of the status and drop the price if it's not getting frequent test drives, especially if it's a high-priced car. I wasted my time driving all the way to Buggy Bank to look at a Honda CR-V that Jerry on the phone told me was in excellent shape . I arrived at Buggy Bank to see the CR-V, I walked into the office and got the keys from Jerry ( Office had a horrible odor ) I walk up and checkout the vehicle and it was a total POS. Nasty oil leaks with a huge puddle under the car , Interior was still wet and smelled like dogs with so much hair stuck inside that I could have made a rug. The tires were bald and a lower crack In the windshield . I didn't even start the CR-V , I walked back inside and told him what a waste of time this was and his response was what do you expect buying a 13 year old car, well if you posted all these negatives then people wouldn't drive 40 min to your business. Very good service for selling your car. From buyer side the no hassle drive all you want handling is also very pleasant. Really like the owner's approach. However, even though it is not the lot owner's problem, should really have some control over the cars allowed to be on display here. We came over checking the Mazda 5 posted on craigslist, it had fender bender, scratches all over, and a sizeable crack at the front bumper, the drive was not terrible but uncomfortable, the back was dirty. It definitely wasn't in display condition (please, mark it as savage if selling a crappy car). Yet its asking price is $500 over KBB's excellent (top 5%) category. They were able to take my car for the lot right away. Jerry helped me figure out my price and after looking my car over recommended that I didn't really need detailing. (I cleaned it and washed it myself beforehand). Buggy Bank also connected me with Berkeley Star Smog, who came and got my car from Buggy Bank and smog tested it for me (I believe they did this same day as well!) I meant to write this review a long time ago. From the point of view of a car seller, this is an excellent service. It's a secure lot to display your car for sale - that deserves 5 stars. I wish there were more places like this. Most cars in good condition easily get a better price than trade-in value. The best deals get snapped up very quickly. On the other hand, from the point of view of a car buyer, u need to do your homework before u buy anything. Some cars are in perfect condition, and some need a little cosmetic work or just meant to be used for transportation. Can be a great place to buy a used car for your kid, save $$ over a new car. Sometimes sellers moving out of town are willing to negotiate because of time constraints, people who don't need an extra car or need the money for whatever reason; while other sellers are simply too greedy and won't budge a cent. i don't mind paying above blue book value if I can save money over dealership prices, for a similar vehicle. But I wouldn't buy anything that had dealership prices. Don't get attached to any car, if u cannot get the price u want - walk away. Always check the car in person. Descriptions and photos are not enough. So u can see if clean or dirty (will need auto detailing), if smelly, or verify pristine condition. For example, once I saw a 2004 Mazda 3 with a few cosmetic scratches and a little dirty inside (probably used in a farm), but the car engine was in perfect condition, low mileage. And the owners were a little flexible with the price, so that was a good deal. If u want the keys to check a car, BB will ask for your driver's license to add into their system. They'll need a credit card if u want to do a test drive. One funny thing I realized a long time ago is that some people are really, really bad at parallel parking (scratches on tire rims and bumpers). Look at the lines on the body of the used car, they should be perfect. Check if the paint color matches every panel, no changes in color hue. Any gaps or uneven spaces, or ripples on the reflection. All are indications that the car has been in an accident and later repaired. Avoid any car that doesn't disclose those details. Also avoid fleet cars and flood damaged vehicles. Basic tips: - Research the car model and year, check for recalls. - Check Kelley's blue book value just for reference. Most cars anywhere are priced a bit higher than that. - Vehicles with over 100K miles, might need costly repairs in the future. - Test everything (windows, doors, locks, trunk, wipers, radio, lights, signals, heater, A/C, seat adjustments, sunroof, etc.). - If u see wheellocks, look for the unlocking nut (usually in the trunk). - Check that all 4 tires have equal wear. - Don't believe anything a seller says. - Take the car to a trusted mechanic for a thorough inspection (fluid levels, engine mounts, brakes, leaks, etc.). This information is yours to use for bargaining - u don't need to share it with BB or anybody. Ask the owner if he/she has: 2 sets of keys and keyfob remote (one set already at BB), plus the car manual (many new cars need a code for the radio/navigation system, after the battery is changed). Replacing a lost remote or getting an extra coded key might cost u $60 or more, so include that in your negotiations. If u buy a used car, remember that u still have to pay sales tax, transfer title ($15), and car registration fees to the DMV. Consider other costs (maintenance, insurance, repairs, etc.) when figuring out your budget.
