I've eaten in a few times, and have ordered delivery a few times from Buffa Louie's, so here goes--a review from both sides of the fence! I love the decor of Buffa Louie's. Walking in, you just feel...well, it's not exactly homie, I wouldn't say, but it's certainly welcoming. I don't go for the game, and maybe I'm just a long time Bloomingtonite at this point, but it didn't feel OVERLY sports bar to me. I mean, it still gave off the feeling of being a sports bar, but it came across in the sort of way that that one relative everyone has who is obsessed with sports's house comes across--homie, just with a particular passion. Anyway, I've gone back and forth on the food at Buffa Louie's as I ate here over the years. I could never decide if I really liked it or not, yet I always came back. I tried nearly every single type of sauce they had, and I liked the wings (boneless, because I'm a pansy), I liked some of the sauces, but nothing ever wowed me. Then we get to about four months ago, when I finally ordered the sweet bbq for the first time and ordered the loaded curly fries. And, well, something finally clicked, as if I'd finally picked out the right things for me. The sweet barbecue is, as it says on the tin, a sweet barbecue, and it's delightful. The loaded curly fries come with bacon, ranch, and barbecue sauce--and it's amazing. I've gotten both things delivered and in person, and they're delicious either way. And I want to note too that my earlier comment doesn't mean the food is bad, because it was delicious; it just wasn't the thing that I particularly wanted at the location. It's like going to a restaurant, and having your favorite food you love above all else, or choosing to try something else which is good but not your favorite. It's that. Delivery from the location has always been prompt for me, even on busy nights. I ordered last week, for example, during the Michigan game where it was impossible to get most anything, and then suddenly...thirty minutes after I ordered, bam, at my door. Amazing speed for the night. So, Buffa Louie's, you've won me over. At first I wasn't too sure about you, but now I love everything you do, what can I say? read more

This is a classic Bloomington favorite. The only downside is a bit of a long wait time, but it's worth it. They occasionally update the menu with new things to try, and in general there are a lot of great choices. The buffalo mac and cheese is delicious. The food is deceivingly filling. read more

Its kinda hard to not go while you're in Bloomington, because they have this huge neon sign and it's so well decorated. They honestly spent more time on their decor than on their menu. I feel like this is a Bloomington legend that went south as other people took over. The wings are totally forgettable so then you move on to a chicken sandwich or a hot dog and they are worse than fast food. Drink specials aren't great either so you wonder why you would waste your time at this place to watch the game. I spent 5 years living in Bloomington, and I can tell you first hand, Buffa Louie's is one to ignore, totally overrated. read more

Wow. I am speechless. I love this atmosphere. The veggie wings were questionable. BUT the friedpickles. Those are gas. If those fried pickles were a dorm at IU they would be Union Street. Had a chicken salad with hot sauce which was fabulous, BUT the service was TERRIBLE. I sat outside with some friends and they have speakers so you can hear when your food is ready. The speakers weren't working so after 30 minutes I went inside to check what was going on. Someone had apparently taken my order and they just never prepared my friend's. I thought everything was going to be okay because a manager or something said she was going to the back to make herself immediately. It still took like 15 more minutes to get my food and my friends wings came out cold. My salad was fantastic but it was a terrible first experience to a place that my friends have been raving about since freshman year. read more

I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by my recent visit to Buffa Louis. Since it's in a historical Bloomington building (the Gables has been around since the 1930's at least) the interior is extremely cool and unique, sporting three levels of seating and Bloomington history and lore, as well as multiple plasma screen TV's to watch sporting events. And my food was even good. The side salad was crisp and fresh and my Chicken Louie sandwich was juicy, smothered in provolone, and topped by an excellent sweet BBQ sauce. The service was so terrible I was totally shocked. The caucasian female cashier was soooooo rude. She didn't put our order in so after all of our friends got our food and we didn't we checked on it. She said your burgers will be the next ones out. 15 more minutes still no burgers so we asked her again. This time she said oh your orders weren't put in so it hasn't even been started yet. Then offers us a cookie as if that would fix anything. So she offers us a refund and goes to talk to her manager about it. Then she comes back and feverishly types on her little touch screen not saying a word. So we ask if they are still going to be making our food and she SNAPS at us saying I just got yelled at by manager about this so if you want you can go talk to him! First of all it isn't our fault you suck at your job, you deserve to be yelled at by your manager if you can't take and put in orders at a restaurant. Secondly I think it is disgusting that you guys spit all over our food as you run around yelling our names. Seriously get a better system for getting food to your customers without the side of spit. Our group of seven is definitely not ever going back after that fiasco. read more

The honey garlic, sweet, and the TNT sauces are so good! Love all 3, but the honey garlic is my fave. My boyfriend was reluctant to get the TNT because he thought it would be too hot, but he actually liked it. It was hot, but not too too hot. But it all depends on how much spice you can take. For him, it's kind of like the hotter the better. I thought it had more than a kick to it, but not unbearable. The orders come out fast too! read more

Food is ok but owner behaves like an ass every time I'm there. Today saw him publicly embarrass/shame a server that forgot to use microphone in the middle of a huge post game rush and then made an incredibly sexist and demeaning remark towards two women ordering wings "oh you want traditional? So we aren't men then" Have good wings and food but you can find that lots of places in Bloomington, not worth putting up with the negative comments from the owner. However, the servers were fantastic! On top of their game, fast, and ready to help even when getting stomped on. read more

I've held off on reviewing Buffa Louie's because, honestly, I get the sense that this is one of those places where the owner reads the Yelp reviews and, with my pic out there and my name too close to what it really is, I think he would spot me at some point. Who's the owner? Find the loudest guy in the restaurant, and that's probably him. To be fair, he seems nice, asks people how things are, and he always seems to be there (behind the counter when it's busy), so it's also nice to see an owner actually caring what's going on at his restaurant. But, the hell with Bloomington, we're leaving, and I can, thus, finally write my review. If anything, this is likely the funkiest layout you will find anywhere. There are four separate levels, and it's not even that big of a restaurant. There are these awkward stools in the main corridor where you should not sit unless you have to, because you'll be right next to people standing around trying to read the menu. Other tables are enormous. The ones upstairs and some in what I call the pit are reasonable for 2-4 people, but they seem like the minority. For the food, this is really a college place. Burgers, chicken sandwiches, wings, fries, etc. You're not going to get anything healthy or anything really great. It's all very standard. The chicken sandwiches are listed with the burgers, and you can get either meat, which is an interesting concept. I believe you can also get veggie burger as an alternative. Their salads are decent. Not as much cheese and iceberg as a typical Indiana salad. The best day to go is Thursday, when all of their sandwiches are $5. "Sandwich" means both chicken sandwich and burger. Yes, you may have thought, in looking at the menu, they everything was burger, but you can actually sub a chicken patty for anything. One of the issues may be the fact that this ability to sub chicken is unclear. But the chicken sandwiches are actually quite good, and the meat itself is well-cooked and a fairly large breast. I wouldn't necessarily recommend the burgers but, for Bloomington standards, this is pretty good. Better than Bub's, if you like them. This is a good place to watch a game. Lots of TVs and some surprisingly good beer on draft. They seemed to move from Bud Light to exclusively local: Upland/BBC. So why only three stars? Mainly for the consistency in getting the order out. I've waited over 20 minutes for my chicken sandwich and fries before. Not even just once. It tended to be the rule more than the exception. It's just not acceptable at lunch. Dinnertime, they tend to be a bit quicker, probably because there are fewer customers. If it says anything, I came here quite a bit in my time in Bloomington. The service was really good. But the buffalo chicken sandwich was horrible. The buffalo "sauce" that was put on was watery and ran down the chicken sandwich. I thought it was grease that was dripping off but realized it was the buffalo sauce. Not planning on going again. This place is terrible. I've ordered take out from here two times and both orders were screwed up. 1. Ordered a buffalo chicken salad. When I got the food home I realized there was no chicken on a salad. 2. I called for a delivery order, and they forgot my mozzarella sticks. Again, did not realize this until the delivery person was gone. I called the restaurant to complain and they basically accused me of lying and never sent anything over. Anyway, I can say never again. I'm sad to say that Buffalouie's has gone downhill. Their food is very inconsistent with the type of chicken that they serve their customers. Especially the boneless wings. How would someone feel paying $20.00 for "Tyson brand" chicken nuggets instead of high-quality chicken for that price? Buffa Louie's is a great place to grab a quick meal before an Indiana University basketball game. The service is fast and the food is always hot. The chicken tenders with curly fries and a side of ranch are the way to go. Definitely not the place for a ton of healthy choices, but delicious regardless. Where do I start? Vistit # 1 (Call-in to-go order) We called in our order, and they told us it would be ready in about 20 minutes. So, we waited about 20 minute to leave our house, arrived at Buffa Louie's and what do ya know? Our order isn't ready. They tell us it will be another 20-30 minutes. After waiting an additional 35 minutes, we got our order. But not before complaining to a worker, and a manger, both of whom were extremely rude, and putting the blame on the customer, which is a HUGE no-no in any industry. No complaints about the food. Visit #2 (dine-in) My husband and I decided to dine-in on their boneless wing night (a Wednesday I believe). We placed our order, found a table, and waited. We got our order and much to our surprise one set of the boneless wings was COMPLETELY drowning in sauce. To the point where we had to fish them out, and put them in a separate dish. My husband has yet to return, due to this experience. Visit #3 (Order from BTown Menus) Took about an hour (which is normal for BTown menus) driver got lost. No huge complaints. Visit #4 (Order from BTown Menus) Made sure to place the order early b/c I knew it would take a while with the BTown Menus process. Placed my order at 11:15 am. (Keep in mind this is a single person order. A salad. And on a Thursday) 12:30 pm rolls around and I havent gotten a call from a lost driver yet, so I first contact BTown Menus. They tell me Buffa Louie's handles their own delivery so I should call them. Call Buffa Louie's and get put on hold for 5 minutes. Finally get to talk to someone and they tell me my order is out with the driver. FINALLY get my order TWO hours later...TWO! My point about Buffa Louie's? The food is just fine. but the customer service leaves much to be desired. That alone will prevent me from dining with them. read more

OMG if prayers can be answered mine were! I had boycotted Buffa Louie's now for a few years because they did not carry my favorite and Buffa Ed himself's signature sandwich the Big Red Italian! We decided tonight to get some carry out and being tired of the same old same old we decided to hit Louie's. Words cannot express how thrilled I was to see the Big Red Italian had found its rightful place back on the menu!!!!!! I did a little happy dance, in my mind of course. I am a vegetarian which might taint my review of Buffa Louie's. But when I went to this establishment I got a black bean veggie burger. It was not bad food but I knew the flavor from somewhere. After the first few bites I knew I had the same veggie burger in my freezer at home. What I did like about Buffa Louie's was that they branded each of the burger buns with the Buffa Louie's logo. I'm sure this is a good place for meat eaters because the others in my family quite enjoyed it but it you are a vegetarian I would not recommend this restaurant. The food's standard (except the wings, which are great), but what's really impressive to me is the amount of culture built up in here. The church-like ambience, the layers and layers of different phases the gables have gone though, the rowdy people ringing the bells, the strange hyper-religious people who come by, and the athletic history lesson on your way to the bathroom. Along with Yogi's wings, these are the two best in town. Buffalouie's sauces are much better than Yogi's, but on some occasions they serve you really scrawny wings. Their chicken parm sandwich is killer and I wish they would bring back the pot roast sandwich with the tomato-horseradish sauce as it was a favorite. I am not sure if they still deliver, but expect to wait at least an hour if can't pick it up. They took over the old gables building which thankfully survived the university's demolition spree on this block. The table layout has multiple levels which is unusual. I like the new location's interior much better, but the old place had plenty of parking so we dined there more. read more
