My sister and I were have a stoat about the south side, starving and not sure what we wanted to eat, when we spotted Buddy's and she insisted we go and have a look at the menu. I was sceptical, since it looked like a bit of a meat-fest from the sign outside, but I was pleased to find a vegan falafel burger on the menu, so we plonked ourselves down at a table and placed our orders. My burger was absolutely amazing, piled high with salad and didn't fall apart like so many veggie burgers do. We shared a massive portion of cajun fries, which were really tasty and excellent value at £2.50. My sister had a cheeseburger, which she declared she enjoyed every bite of and we shared a bottle of fruity cider to wash it all down. Our waiter was really nice and appropriately attentive and, overall, it was excellent value, costing under a tenner each for a filling feed. I was pleasantly surprised by Buddy's and it's worth a visit for the chips alone!

Buddys is just round the corner from where I live but this was my first visit. It's styled like a modern American diner - music refused to stray from 70s and 80s pop rock, but the good stuff! It's really clean and the girl who served us was lovely. I went for extra hot piri piri chicken burger. It's exactly like you'd get at Nandos but minus the extra hotness I like - but it was still very tasty. Cajun fries though were superb! I'll be back soon to give the veggie burger a bash.

Our spread: Carolina poutine, onion rings, mac and cheese and the sliced beef brisket sandwich

To be fair, I enjoyed their takeaway a few doors down so much better than our meal here the other night. I'm not sure I'll ever venture back to the sit down part of Buddy's, as the chefs are different and the staff are just slow and not very friendly. My boyfriend and I had been off doing our own thing with friends and once back at home decided that we should probably think about dinner. For a while, Sundays have been our takeaway night and we usually opt for Chinese, but we've both gone off it we've been eating so much lately, so I suggested we take a stroll down to Buddy's for some BBQ. When we walked in, the place was pretty empty, only two tables of two people were filled. We were sat right squished in between the bar and the kitchen door, not really the best seat in the house with so many others open. The server came right away and took our drink order, and someone one else brought us the drinks. It was literally about 10-15 minutes until someone else finally came to take our food order. My boyfriend went with the Carolina Poutine and onion rings and I opted for the sliced brisket sandwich and the mac and cheese. Remembering how absolutely divine the sandwich I got from the takeaway was (even after i reheated it in the microwave), I was drooling in anticipation of the same sandwich........or at least something along the same line. Our food finally arrived (not very quickly) and just by looking at the sandwich, I could tell it was different. The meat was sliced rather thick, there was what looked like a gravy on it and there was no dressing what so ever. The pickles were proper dill pickles and the onions were pickled, which was fine. I always start out taking a bite out of just the meat alone to savour all the flavour. HA! Oh, I was so disappointed before i had even taken a bite out of the full sandwich. The meat, or maybe the gravy was so beyond salty, it was almost inedible. There was no taste of BBQ whatsoever, just this salty gravy. The mac and cheese was good, cheese on top put under the grill to crisp it up. My boyfriends poutine was pretty tasty as well, with pulled pork on top, but the onion rings, I thought, were gross. Pure grease. I took one small bite and that was enough for me. I could feel my arteries clogging. I was pretty bummed out about the meal as a whole especially since I've been talking up the BBQ sandwich to my boyfriend for quite some time now. He didn't mind his food and finished up whatever I didn't eat (which was much of the sandwich) but I'm not fan and probably won't be coming back to the sit down diner. I'll need to give the takeaway one more shot to make sure it wasn't a fluke- jeez, it was just so much better than this. Day and night, really.

I'll be honest. I wasn't impressed with Buddy's as a takeaway - after trying it once, I wasn't inclined to return. I've been reading good things about the restaurant here on Yelp and wanted to see how it was for myself. We headed along around 5.30 on a Thursday night and got a table for 2 without any problems, although it was pretty busy. There are two dining areas - a space at the front which I would say is the nicer of the two, and a rear area down a few steps. The decor of this rear area gave me the feeling of being in a generic chain restaurant - a mash up of McDonalds, Pizza Hut and KFC perhaps. It's the exposed brick walls, plain red paint and the stainless steel handrail running around the room. And the fact that part of the space is sunken and feels like you're eating in a gladiator pit which is a bit unnerving. Added to this is the fact there was a manager/supervisor who stood at the top of the stairs for most of the time we were there, watching over the tables. He didn't seem to be actually going over to tables to check if they needed drinks/food though, it was more just a watching thing which was, again, unnerving. I'd checked out the menu and knew what I was going to get thanks to Joe P's expert guidance. Fried pickles with ranch dressing, a cheeseburger (for me) and Carolina poutine to share. We did consider getting chips as well but with some advice from the waitress we stuck with this order, and Graeme got the Western burger for his main. I'm glad as this was a lot of food for two people! Starting with the fried pickles, these came out searing hot and a good sized portion of 4 for £3.95. These were really tasty and the dressing with them was really nice. I would definitely get them again but I will say I prefer them with a blue cheese dressing like they have at Meat Bar. It took a while for the rest of our food to arrive but the wait wasn't so long that we were uncomfortable. The burgers looked really good when they came out, with a nice bun and a good amount of lettuce which seems to be unusual for Glasgow's burger scene. The patty was really thin which I normally like although this meant it was cooked well done and I prefer it with more pink. There is a lot of burger sauce on it though, so I think this balances it out and I loved the taste of the burger sauce and lettuce which gave it a real freshness rather than making it a greasy stodge-fest. For £4.95 for a cheeseburger is a really good price and I found it really impressive. I did notice that our Caroline poutine didn't seem to have any gravy so I checked with the waitress who took it back to the pass. Seeing as we were sitting right next to the pass, it was interesting to see the guy's reaction which seemed to be to say that there was gravy already on it. Honestly, I had a good poke around, and there was none on it. Thankfully the waitress asked him to get more gravy put on anyway and brought it back over absolutely smothered in gravy. You can see what I mean from the two photos I uploaded - one before and after. Without this gravy I think this would have been a really average dish but the gravy is essential and this ended up being the highlight of the meal. I think if they were always this generous with the gravy this would quickly become a massive addiction for me, I'm still thinking about it today. One more thing I must say is that our waitress during the night was absolutely exceptional - I wish I knew her name (it was on the receipt as Samsung 2, which made me laugh). She was friendly, helpful, checked up on our table a good amount of times and got me that extra smothering of gravy. When we paid up to leave she made sure that she came over to say goodbye. She really went out of her way and that made our evening even more pleasant, after such delicious food. So yep, I've happily eaten my words. Buddy's Restaurant seems to be a winner and I will definitely be back for more poutine with extra gravy. There was a couple of things which held me back from dishing out that extra star but it'll be good to see how this addition to the southside goes.

They have come along way from their start of having some space at Variety bar to being part of the bigger Tribeca group and now opening a location in the centre of the city at Royal Exchange Square. First impressions were not great, it was much smaller than we thought and the table our group was sat at was very cramped in and really close to another groups table. The staff were friendly enough though and we went on with picking our mains and sides. I had a burger and shared poutine & Mac n cheese. The food was slightly disappointing to be honest. The portions on everything were very small in size and I don't feel like we got value for money at all. The poutine was under cooked and the sauce was to runny for my taste. The Mac was ok, but it was very very plain. The burger was average, but gone in two bites. (OK Maybe three) All in the food was pretty meehhhh and a bit disappointing. As a meat eater I approve of this notion (until we have too many of them by which point the next craze will be upon us anyway). And so to Smoak, once of Pivo Pivo, now with it's own location on Royal Exchange Square. It's a small space, and we were sitting in the back where room is a little on the tight side. We had pre-ordered to avoid the lunchtime rush and so I already knew that I would be having the Dirty Harry. After being shown to our table, drinks were ordered and delivered and the food arrived promptly after that. I hadn't ordered any chips or sides with mine (in a vague effort to be healthy) so when it was placed in front of me it did look a little on the small side as it was on a plate clearly made to hold some fries (which most of my colleagues had). An odd thing to note, perhaps, but presentation is everything right? Well of course it's not. Taste is everything! The Dirty Harry - a venison hot dog, topped with BBQ pulled pork, cheese and fried onions, all served in a brioche style hot dog bun - looked pretty average when it arrived and did little to prove me wrong. The fried onions scattered on the top were more charred and crispy than fried and so small all the flavour was gone, so that was a bit of a disappointment. The first bite of the hot dog proved promising, the flavour of the venison hot dog was there, the cheese wasn't overpowering, and the little kick of sweetness from the pulled pork helped, although I'm not sure the brioche bun was the best idea, making the entire thing a little on the sweet side. However by the last few bites I was pretty underwhelmed and left with just a bun that was pretty dry, and a some of the venison hot dog, I ended up adding some ketchup just to make it easier to eat. Price wise paying just short of £10 for a pretty average hotdog and a ginger beer didn't feel like value for money. My whelmed remains undered and I don't see me hurrying back to Smoak any time soon. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't all that special

I like it, to be honest not much has changed since the now past gone LUAC days. They did a cracking redecoration job so there isn't really anything that needs updated yet. So thankful for the ladies toilets being refurbished. I hated them in the Hubbards/The Wise Monkey days. I bloody wish I hadn't as it was a terrible meal. If I was told there was not actually a Korean chef in the kitchen I would not be in the slightest bit surprised. I am no Korean food expert, but I have been to the country and tasted the cuisine first hand so I at least have a bit of an idea and to me this was miles and miles away from being authentic. The place is swankier looking than I expected, but really that's one of the few positives I can think of. The prices are crazily high for the portion size and quality. )8 quid for half an aubergine starter!) The service is erratic. They did not give us enough menus for everyone. They gave us sauce bottles that did not pour any sauce. They brought the same dish twice and tried to serve another of our dishes to another table before the bringing it to us. Dishes tried - Korean pancake - nice but expensive. Saves it from being one star review. Gyosas - decent dumplings. Only other nice thing along with the pancake. Kimichi - is Kimichi, it is what it is. Crispy Korean chicken - expensive bland tasteless deep fried cardboard. More fitting in a low grade chinese takeaway. A complete horror show of a course. Deep fried aubergine - average tasting and a complete rip off. Waiter should have been wearing a highway man mask when serving it. Bibimbap - Korean beef rice bowl. Shocking rip off, about two bits of shredded beef in it and 4 veggies and the rest was rice. Usually I would only comment on my own food, but honestly mine were not actually that bad in comparison to some of my fellow guests. Fatty, chewy meat, tiny portions and bizarre combinations. If I had got a couple of the dishes other people had chosen I may have actually cried in the restaurant. The prices are way way way to high. The quality and portion size is really really had. The service is brusque at best. There are much better Korean restaurants in Glasgow. In my opinion this one is really going to need to up its game if it's going to survive.

It's really lovely, a nice sized dining room, good natural light, comfortable seating, pretty asian inspired looking bar, funky lighting. It was cool and I liked it. The service were brisk and to the point. There were a couple of staff members who were a little friendlier, but on the whole the staff didn't really interact with us at all other than to take our order and thank us for coming. Okay so let's talk food - they advertise themselves as Korean but I would say that they are more of an asian fusion place with Sushi, Teriyaki, Udon and Yaki Soba all on the menu alongside the Korean BBQ, Hot Pots and Bibimbap. We decided to order up some appetizers to share, the first thing we noticed was how eye wateringly expensive they were. Let me take you through what we had Kimchi Pancake (£8.60) - easily the best dish of the night by a mile, it was flavourful and crispy and we loved it, but it wasn't even close to being worth almost £9. Chicken Gyoza (£6.90) - 6 pretty nice lightly fried dumplings, they had lots of filling and a nice enough flavour. It was another favourite dish at the table. Crispy Chicken Korea Style (£8.70) - the chicken I didn't hate, it was a good sized portion but it was pretty small pieces and chewy, I ate it but a few at my table didn't do back for a second piece. It reminded me of deep fried shredded chicken from a chinese take away. Deep Fried Aubergine (£8.60) - This was by far and away the dish that annoyed us most cost wise. We were expecting maybe cubes of battered Aubergine....but it was literally half an aubergine which had been deep fried, and some sweet miso sauce squirted across the top for nearly £9. Let's take a second to think about that - Half an Aubergine and a drizzle of sauce for NINE of Queen Elizabeth's British pound sterling. Shockingly over priced. Unfortunately things did not improve with my main and I genuinely could've wept when it arrived. I went for the Teriyaki Duck Breast (£10.60) this arrived as a small portion of overly fatty flavourless duck breast, sliced thinly with a tiny bit of greasy watery sauce and a side salad leaves - no veg, nothing. The rest of my table looked on at me with sympathy as I ate my dry duck and boiled rice which I had to pay £2.50 for. As you can tell I was utterly unimpressed with the value for money and at £25 per person I felt it was obscenely over priced for the food we were served. Especially given that I came home and had to have something to eat because I was still hungry. I am actually still really disappointed by the whole experience this morning as I write this. Sadly this isn't somewhere I would visit again even if other people wanted to go, I feel like I was seriously fleeced for this meal and that is not a feeling I enjoy or wise to repeat.

This chicken burger was RIDICULOUS in size, it was mostly all hanging out of the bun as it was so big. Am I complaining? No way, it was absolutely delicious and had that juicy, smoky freshness from grilled chicken that so many places screw up by overcooking. It was hard to eat though so I ended up just aiming on eating the fillet rather than the burger. I tried a couple of sides; cajun fries and mac cheese. The cajun fries are amazing and probably the best I can remember eating in Glasgow. There was just the right amount of seasoning and they packed a good punch. You know what makes Cajun fries even better? Dipping them into mac cheese. Oh yeh, I went there and I'm not ashamed. My friend Sharon M wasn't all that impressed with the mac cheese but she is pretty judgemental (I mean that as a compliment, she makes a damn amazing mac cheese) - personally, I liked it. It was cheesy, the mac was cooked just right. Simple, and good. This isn't the kind of place to eat and then sit about chatting with your pals, so we headed up the road for dessert. I'll be back sooner rather than later for more of that ridiculous chicken. They also do takeaway - phone in your order so you don't have to wait too long as it was really busy on a Friday night. I understand why.
