Just to be clear, it doesn't say "BRGR sauce" under Highland Coo
    Francesca R.

The good: the burgers are brilliant. American quality. Got the chicken strips kids meal for the wee man and those were quite tasty as well. Fries were oddly teeny but yummy anyway. I got my food to go but the atmosphere in the restaurant was modern and casual. The kind of place you go to grab a quick bite but turns into several beers and good chat. The bad: when ordering my husband's highland coo I asked if there was any mayo. The server wasn't sure if the pepper sauce had it so I asked for it to be on the side. I get home with the food, the pepper sauce is on the side, but for some reason his burger is lathered in a mustard / mayonnaise sauce which I think is the "BRGR sauce." The ingredients for the Highland Coo are "cos lettuce, caramelised onion, haggis, cheddar, and pepper sauce." Doesn't say BRGR sauce. I mention this because the manager and the woman who served me (the latter under her breath to same manager, unaware that I can hear people three feet away even if there is a counter between us) insisted it was on the menu. I've now scoured the menu and I can assure you that nowhere does it say "BRGR sauce automatically included even if not listed, even if you just specifically mentioned that you don't want mayonnaise and *do* want sauce on the side." I do appreciate that they gave me a new burger *and* refunded my original one. And I also know that the customer isn't always right and managers/servers are within their rights to get snippy with people complaining about nonsense. But my complaint was valid and I was given a lot of attitude for it. I'm going to put this down to new restaurant teething problems. The burgers were too good for me not to give them another chance!. So I would say give this place a shot, just be very clear about what you want and double check what comes out before going home!

    Cheese and bacon burger

I'm a regular at Whole Foods so have passed BRGR many times and never really thought to pop in. Today though, with a craving for something fattening and delicious, I seen a pop up on Facebook with pictures of delicious looking burgers and poutines. They do a week day deal on Burgers so I decided to venture down for a takeaway. Inside it's pretty much like all the other trendy burger joints, wooden benches etc. It's quite small but plenty of seating. The staff were polite and helpful. The burgers are served medium as standard but they were happy to make mine well done since I'm heavily preggers!! I went for the cheese and bacon burger which is served with there house Mayo, salad and pickles, and some sweet potato fries. I had planned on driving home to eat it but the smell was just too much and I ended up unashamedly scoffing it in the car! The burger was soooo juicy and was more like a mixture of minced and chunks of beef. Everything on it paired perfectly. The sweet potato fries were amongst the crispiest I've ever had (what's the deal with soggy sweet fries?) but could have done with a good shaking of salt. Along with a can of juice I paid £7.50 which isn't much more than a McDonald's these days!! Top quality and thoroughly enjoyed! Lose stars for rubbish parking nearby unless you park at the train station where spaces are few and far between! I'll be back again next time my cravings take hold !

I hear you ask. Well, a few reasons. I'm not the biggest pizza eater - I'll happily eat it and we make a great homemade pizza, if I do say so myself. And when the mood hits, we tend to go out for dinner rather than order takeaway. But yesterday was different. I was really tired, fueled only on caffeine and sugar and by the time dinner time arrived even the idea of putting something from the freezer in the oven seemed too much effort. I used this amazing device called "the internet" to order pizza (don't laugh, I've never ordered takeaway online before) from Toni's. I went for artichoke, fresh tomato and parmesan on mine, whereas Graeme went for chicken and smoked bacon. I liked that you had free reign over choosing your toppings. I couldn't see an option for set toppings like most places have but that didn't phase me as I liked being able to ask my taste buds what they fancied. My order was submitted at 7.06pm and the computer told me I would be eating my pizza by 7.55pm. Seemed reasonable enough to me, but thankfully the pizza guy was early and arrived at 7.40pm. Woohoo! So, how did the pizzas look? Well I was pretty damn impressed - they had a lovely puffy crust and the toppings were generous and fresh. When I dived in mouth first I was really impressed by the taste and honestly couldn't think of how they could be improved. These are some of the tastiest pizzas I've tried and will definitely be returning to sample more of their menu (they also offer pasta, burgers and sandwiches). The price seemed reasonable (but as you'll know by now, I am a novice in the takeaway area) - two medium pizzas with 3/2 toppings each came to just over £20 including delivery.

When we sat down we ordered right away, having had a while to peruse the menu. I went for their five egg omelette which apparently is so big it took them almost three weeks to find suitable crockery. I digress. The breakfast omelette was certainly huge, with two chunky slices of toast accompanying it. However it tasted pretty greasy, probably mainly due to the sausage which wasn't great quality. I got a bit bored halfway through eating it so gave up and got it to take away! I was pretty full so didn't get chance to get a dessert but they looked pretty interesting. I had, by chance, noticed an advert on the subway and thought it looked interesting! Let me start off by saying that the portions are HUGE. The pancakes were massive and fluffy, served with delicious maple syrup and crispy bacon. Definitely the best I have tried outside of Canada. The vanilla latte was sweet, creamy and filling! My boyfriend had the egg and bacon bagel which came with a delicious side salad. The vanilla milkshake that he ordered was bloomin' lovely! Sprinkles on top and sugary till the very end! I would highly recommend a visit here for breakfast- I will be back very soon!

It is conveniently located at the end of the walk through Electric Glen so there was constantly people coming in to see about whether they could get a table. We hadn't tried The Boathouse, despite it being in our local park. When we arrived last night I was impressed by the decor - they've definitely gone for a boating theme but it's done in a very classy, relaxed way rather than being naff and tacky. We had a comfortable table for 4 by the window looking over the pond which would be an excellent spot to dine in summer. I was initially a little disappointed by the menu as it all seemed like standard café grub and the prices gave me the impression it might not be a great standard. There's sandwiches, baked potatoes, burgers, wraps plus a hot dishes section with fish & chips, macaroni cheese, beef chilli etc. And they have a separate breakfast meal (my favourite meal of the day!) I then read the cute little info box on the menu that says "real people make real food from real ingredients" and all outsourced food is marked on the menu so you know what is/isn't made on site. Understably things like ice cream, pasta plus some cakes/bread are bought in but it was pleasing to see the rest is made on site. I opted for the mac cheese - after doubling checking with the waitress what she thought of it. I think the price was around £5.50 so I was a bit worried it would be tiny or substard. When it arrived it was in a decent sized ramekin with garlic bread and side salad. It was incredibly cheesy and creamy and I'm pleased to report it was one of the best macaroni cheese dishes I've tried to date. Big call I know, as I eat a lot of macaroni cheese! My only comment about it was that the noodles were really small (perhaps maccheroncelli pasta which I had to google to check the name of!). But that wasn't anything to complain about, just something to note! The extra side of chips I ordered were also really good - nothing to rave about, but decent chips all the same. Service was exceptional - even without having to take into account how busy The Boathouse must be while Electric Glen was on. The place didn't feel busy, the staff didn't seem rushed and they were all calm and helpful. The waitress even came back to ask what I thought of the macaroni cheese after I'd finished it which I thought was nice of her. The bill for a meal for four people (mains only, a soft drink each) came to a very reasonable £40. If you want to have some drinks, they are BYOB with no charge for corkage. They also have free wifi. Seriously - this place is awesome. For proper, decent food right on our doorstep, I'm totally kicking myself for not visiting this absolute gem sooner and can't wait to go again.

But then I got distracted by the idea of macaroni cheese so ordered that and a Coke instead. The rest of the menu is kind of standard - baked potatoes, sandwiches, as well as larger hot mains like mince and tatties, pasta, chili. Inside, the cafe is nice. Nothing really stands out in terms of decor but it's bright and there's lots of seating. I'd say the crowd is definitely the older demographic as well as parents with kids. My food didn't take long to arrive and even though the topping was burnt in parts it still looked pretty good. Once it had cooled down a bit, it was really tasty and there was a tonne of cheese in there so it had a lot of flavour. I would say the portion wasn't massive - I could have definitely eaten more. It came with some slices of bread as well as a salad which I confess I didn't eat - bread with mac doesn't seem like the right combination to me and I'd prefer garlic bread or toast at least. The staff were super friendly and helpful, and chatty too. Really lovely and welcoming. The only reason this isn't a 4-star review is the price. For a lunch portion of mac cheese (which wasn't huge) and a soft drink the bill was over £11. Now I know this is Clarkston but I just don't see how a macaroni cheese can be £8.95 when it's essentially just cheese and pasta.

I don't know what happened to Clark & Sons, it seemed to close pretty quickly and then stayed closed while it got refitted to become part of the Belhaven group of pubs. On first impressions, I like what they've done with the decor and layout. There's still a separate bar area from the restaurant, and the dining spaces are more split up now so it doesn't feel like a huge big dining area. There's some nice chandeliers and decor on the walls which shows they've put quite a bit of effort into it. That's until you get to the menu. I'm not even sure it rates as standard pub grub - it is pretty uninspiring with options like buckets of wings, 13 different burger options (yes, 13) as well as standard mains and steaks. You can order certain mains at £10.99 for two, or they have two rump steaks and a bottle of wine for £19.99. I opted for a sirloin steak with garlic mushrooms (£12.70 all up). You need to order at the bar but they do have table service if you go to the bar to order drinks (which makes me wonder why they can't just do table service). I felt like we waited ages for our food, but there was a group of 6 of us and it was relatively busy for a Monday. It was probably at least a 30 minute wait, if not 45 minutes. My steak arrived with chips, tomato, peas and mushrooms but without the garlic mushrooms I'd ordered. They came separately in a bucket and were breaded, certainly not the garlic mushroom sauce I'd expected but the menu is pretty vague on that point. The chips were soft and mushy and bland and needed lots of seasoning. We were sharing a portion of onion rings which were also soft and bland. My steak was overcooked (I'd ordered medium rare, it was well done) and again - bland. I slathered on seasoning and sauce and got through it - the cut of steak was fine but I really don't enjoy my meat that well cooked! This pub is very family friendly. We were seated in an area with lots of kids, where the parents were letting them run around the restaurant and our table. There's loads of seating though so perhaps they could have a separate family-friendly area. There's a good selection of beers including Anchor Steam, Brooklyn Lager, Sam Adams, Twisted Thistle, BrewDog, Williams Bros and West. I really couldn't see that I'll return for the food, but I'd head back for a drink in the bar area.

It's clearly trying to be a sports bar, but designed around a living room. I don't like the lamps hanging from the ceiling, rather than standing up on the floor, or the doors embedded horizontally in the wall - anyone have a sledgehammer handy? The volume on the multitude of tv's was muted when we arrived. As soon as the football went on, it was blaring. You can't look anywhere without seeing a tv here. You're telling me that you're the best burger place on the planet, the Willy Wonka of burgers. Your prices are high and I've got high expectations. Very high - because you told me I should have. I didn't get Willy Wonka, I got Dynamo - a pretty lacklustre attempt at something that everyone else has already done, and better (sorry Dynamo, it's true). So Five Guys came to Scotland and have opened a flurry of stores within a couple of months - there'll be 3 in Glasgow once Braehead opens. Do we need more burger places? No way, but the chains arrived anyway. I visited Silverburn for a late Monday lunch/early dinner and orders a little cheeseburger, little Cajun fries and a drink which came to £10.75. Pretty damn pricey, I'm sure you'll agree. The good: - the drinks machine and refills. - raspberry coke from the drinks machine. - Cajun fries have a lot of punch and are generally pretty good. - Toilets in store rather than having to leave to use the Silverburn ones. - some staff members - Tracey who took my order was nice and chatty, and the guy cleaning up was really nice and checked on what was wrong with my burger when I complained. The bad: - the burger. My bun (bottom half) was super doughy. So doughy I had to take it back and ask for another burger. The replacement one was only moderately better. The rest of the burger was decidedly meh. - the vibe. It feels like being in Maccas which might not be a bad thing if that's what you like but for the prices, it should be nicer. - the other staff. I sat near a group having a management meeting who didn't exude professionalism - shouting at staff returning from breaks and telling another staff member she couldn't sit near them while they had a meeting. It felt a bit high school. Maccas is opening nearby soon, and I'm really not sure how Five Guys will compete. Sure, people will visit once to suss it it out, but then I doubt they'll be back. Booked a table in advance just to be on the safe side. Arrived early, but young lass came and took us over to our table just before 6pm and broke the sad news that the scallops had run out, along with a few main dishes. Wanted to save myself for dessert, so stuck with roast chicken and Fiona roast pork belly. Also ordered a side of honey roasted root vegetables. Took a while for food to arrive, around 30 minutes. Chicken was really nice as was the pork, if not slightly over fatty in parts. Root vegetables were a disappointment, as they were not root vegetables. Red/green peppers with aubergines and red onions... Waitress said they just use what they have left, which means - it's not root vegetables. Fiona's mash potato was mixed in with the black pudding, which meant she couldn't eat it. Again, we find this a lot in restaurants, the obligatory florets of cauliflower, that is bland and tasteless as an accompaniment. Was left pretty dissatisfied. Girl came back after 5 minutes and said the manager agreed the root vegetables were not that & took them off the bill. Waited ages to be asked for desserts, so I popped over to speak to my friends in their performance break & the menus arrived in this time. Took another 25 minutes for a lemon tart and bread and butter pudding to arrive. Tasted lovely, if only the tart could have done with more lemon topping to balance the amount of pastry. So, that was nearly 2 hours we were there & just about managed to get 2 courses of food in that time. That isn't really good enough and the value not that good. £15 for the pork and £10 for the chicken. £38 in total (no drinks as I got them from bar earlier). Far better eateries for this price, but I know they do 2 courses for £10 in the week. That would be a better deal & more reflective of the standard. The service of bar staff was very friendly and the waiting staff equally so. Just needs a strong front of house manager to visibly keep things running more smoothly. They alternated the scallops and pork belly so each bite was just a fantastic flavour sensation for me. There was not enough of it but that's because I thought it was amazing. I was so happy with this dish. The mussels were nice, however my partner felt that it could've done without all the onions. Our mains - he had the rack of lamb, I had the steak pie and chips. We were both very impressed with our dishes. The lamb had a lot of meat and looked so juicy and delicious. My steak pie was massive! It came in a wee cast iron pot, but it was deep and just full of beef. The puff pastry on top was nice and thick. The chips as well were homemade with skin on. So delicious. There was so much in fact I couldn't finish it which made me sad because I hate wasting food. I nearly forgot to mention the delicious cocktail I had. It was the White Elephant cocktail with vanilla vodka, créme de cacao, double cream and milk. It tasted like a boozy vanilla milkshake. Yummy yummy! We will definitely be going back here. There was so many dishes we wanted to try. Our only complaint was the slow service, but it wasn't necessarily their fault. All of the waiting staff were running around serving everyone.
