Roast is one of those places I've gone past at least 1,000 times, but have never made it into - I often peer in the window and then keep walking in favour I can sit in and eat. Sure, there's seating but there isn't much of it so it's more a grab-and-go kind of place. I ordered a Philly cheesesteak ciabatta to go and was impressed that it was freshly made. For £5 I wasn't expecting much steak but there was a good amount and it was smothered in cheese and peppers - very rich and indulgent but delicious all the same. It was a good sized portion too and left me feeling nicely full after scoffing the whole thing in about 30 seconds. While I was waiting for it to be made, I had a good look at the breakfast menu - most roll combinations you can think of, toast, bagels, and quite the range of breakfast sandwiches which all sound pretty delicious. The veggie stacker sounds amazing - cheddar, potato scones, garlic mushrooms and fried egg - yum! I'll be back.

Like a few others I've often passed here so often but never felt drawn in. Everywhere l seem to go everyone has a similar look and they are even selling the same product, maybe l was looking for something different. I was out and not wanting to dirty any of my dishes l walked down the street looking for somewhere that l hadn't tried before. I ordered the pulled pork bun, bbq sauce & coleslaw with a few bottles of ginger beer, total with drinks £8. Most speciality sandwiches are £5 or under. They also do breakfasts here l will definitely have to come back and try them out.

OK, so maybe this isn't the greatest looking sandwich you'll ever eat, but it might just be the most delicious one!

The first time I went to Roast I got the pulled pork sandwich and made the mistake of thinking I could eat it while walking. I failed miserably and ended up with sauce on my sleeves, but it was so finger-lickin' good that I did not even mind that much and already knew I'd be back soon (to sit in, though, I'm a mess). Today I was lucky enough to find this gem of a place empty and got the cheesesteak ciabatta for lunch. There was a short wait, which comes with food being freshly made, so I didn't mind - there was an issue of Foodie on the table, along with today's newspaper and I had a great view of the street outside, so it was actually a really pleasant wait. Then the sandwich came. Let me tell you, I wasn't impressed with the look. But if it wasn't love at first sight, it was definitely a love at first bite. OH MY. I am short of words to describe this sandwich, consisting of a juicy delicious steak, cheese, onions & roasted peppers, because it was an absolute perfection. I'm serious, it was so good I've been thinking about it since, possibly the best sandwich I've eaten in my life. So c'mon, what are you waiting for? I know you want one, just like I do!

Today was the beef brisket and the cheesesteak, couldn't decide so I had both

What a rookie, really hungry so stopped here for a quick sandwich and only ordered one ... Really not enough for my appetite today Got the cheese steak ciabatta and enjoyed ever single bite, cried a little when a bit of the steak fell to the floor.... That poor little piece of steak missing from my sandwich .... I guess that's what a lost piece of my soul would also look like if you need to visualise it I loved my sandwich and longed for another ... But I resisted, swigged back my double espresso and went to stand up to pay..... That's when a hoard of customers decided they wanted to come in (typical) I guess they all wanted to see my lost soul Anyway Friendly service Helpful Great tasting food Nice little seats to munch your quick lunch should you want to savour it rather than eating while on the move Great pit stop Sorry no picture I ate it like a man possessed

Very inexpensive, but filling food with nice employees. The inside doesn't have a ton of seating, but don't let that deter you from getting some great sandwiches!

The first time I walked into Roast on Old Dumbarton Road looking for a coffee I was pretty surprised to find inside a little take away gem. From the outside I had given it very little though when I had passed by, thinking that it looked like quite a cool take away coffee spot. Little did I know they were hiding a little foodie wonderland in there. The inside of Roast is fairly cool but basic, there is a bar with some high stools if you fancied sitting in to eat your food or like me to perch on while you're waiting. The wall covering along the length of one wall is a print of giant newspapers which just really tickled me. For me this is not a place to loiter, I would maybe sit with a coffee if it was raining but I prefer to take away from here...nothing wrong with that style of cafe tho. They have a brilliant selection of dishes here...I am going to talk a little about their breakfast menu here first. I have tried a few of these in the past and they were delicious. I seriously recommend trying the Roast Croque which is made up of a french toast sandwich stuffed full of cured ham, port salut cheese & Dijon mustard....epic right? This is one of my absolute favourite take away dishes in Glasgow and at just £4 it is a bargain, If you visit this is a 'must try' dish. Also worthy of a mention is their morning meat stacker, a sandwhich bursting with bacon, sausage, black pud, potato scone and fried egg. No explanation needed why this is one of my favs. On to the lunch menu, they have all the various cold sandwhich options which you would expect - tuna, chicken, ham etc. Where they really stand out tho is their selection of hot rolls - pulled pork with BBQ sauce & slaw, 100% steak beefburger with burger sauce & salad, Cheesesteak ciabatta...and lots more seriously tempting options. Today I opted tho for the slow-cooked shredded brisket with rocket, it normally also has garlic mushrooms but I hate mushrooms so I asked for mine without. When I got home and got the roll unwrapped I couldn't wait to dive in (once I had snapped it from a million different angles, naturally!) The large roll was loaded with delicious soft moist brisket, which tasted beautiful. The roll was just at the right point of going slightly gooey from the brisket juices soaking in to it. I will definitely be back for this again soon it was scrumptious. I also got to try a bit of Mr G's Cheesesteak - it was huge and so good. The cheese was perfectly balanced with the delicious tender steak. This would also come on my highly recommended list. As you would imagine they also make a pretty decent cup of java and every time I have had a coffee from here it as been bitter and well brewed and one of my favourite lattes in the west end. Next time you are in the area definitely pop in and try these guys they are fantastic.

SAUSAGE SANDWICH WITH CHILLI CHUTNEY HAS ME LIKE... Nom. Nom. Nom.

It's so hard to decide what constitutes a 5-star review but I've settled on the rule of my expectations being blown. Firstly - how can this tiny coffee shop/cafe be dog friendly?! So friendly in fact that my first stop in was to calm my shot nerves caused by Hettie running riot in the Kelvingrove Park doggy off-leash area on our morning walk. After pleading with her for 20 minutes not to eat an enormous wodge of ham - before tearing its plastic container to shreds and eating this too - and making a general tit of myself chasing her all over the park, I needed something (ANYTHING) to calm me down. I had driven past Roast dozens of times and when a quick mental calculation of my location revealed I was a mere 3mins walk away... I was off. Once inside this lovely little space, Hettie immediately sat beside me - loyally and faithfully - and was so well behaved that patrons and staff all commented on her delightful manner. Of course, each one of these comments was like a hot poker into my eye - but alas, I digress. I ordered a cup of tea snd the sausage sandwich with sweet chilli chutney. Shut. The. Front. Door. The tea was in a big ol' mug, made to perfection (I like my tea strong and then with a good dollop of milk) and the sausage sandwich... I can STILL TASTE IT (probably as I've since been back - several times - for the exact same thing. I go each time with the intention of changing my order and then... boom! Sausage sandwich with chilli chutney!). Honestly, I have to restrain myself from going in every time I take Hettie to Kelvingrove park (which is 1-2 times per day) because as a girl of already curvy proportions, I'm not sure it's a habit I should let myself fall into. It's teeny tiny and lovely to sit in if you're lucky enough to get one of the two cute tables in front of the windows (as Lisa and I have before). There's also two bars with stools if you're so inclined to indulge while reading the paper (or bashing out an irate blog post about the abhorrent behaviour of your dog). A good, honest little spot with yummy food, lovely staff and just a stone's throw from KG off-leash area if you're out with a four-legged friend. x

I've stopped in here for take away coffee countless times but I'd been putting off writing a review for until I got the chance to try the food. I'm glad that I waited because that chance came along today. The coffee is very good (I believe it's Dear Green) which is why I keep going back for the coffee. It's well worth picking up a loyalty card so that your tenth coffee is free. It provides exactly the push I need on my way to work. So I would have given them a good review based on the coffee alone. I'm not giving a good review though, I'm giving a great review. Today was a nice lazy Saturday and it was time for a late lunch. What I wanted, really, was the brisket roll. They apologised - the brisket was all gone, perhaps I'd like a cheese steak? I admit that I was disappointed, but I accepted the recommendation and took a nice comfy seat by the window. Roast is quite a small establishment and I suspect they during busy hours they probably run out of seats quite often. What they do have is cosy and comfortable, but I don't think I'd like to sit at the bar that runs along the wall since I think I'd get in people's way, what with it being so small and so popular. On the other hand, the window seats are the perfect spot from which to watch Glasgow wandering by. I've never had a cheese steak before but I recognise that, since it's an American classic, certain people probably have very strong opinions about how it should be done. I now join their ranks. It should be done the way that Roast do it. Tender strips of beef steak, sautéed red and green bell peppers, soft, velvety mature cheese. All in fluffy, floury light bread. I think it might just be the perfect sandwich. I'm certainly not disappointed about the brisket any more.

Pulled pork & coleslaw roll - amazing!!

Roast is pretty unassuming from the outside, to be honest I initially thought it was just another coffee shop. If you are walking past it looks inviting enough and you can tell they sell food when you spot the big counter, but the sit in space is limited to a few stools along one side and at the window. When you walk in you can smell the yummy food! And oh my was it yummy. After some recommendations from fellow Yelper Pammi G I headed along with high expectations for the food! I'm pleased to say I wasn't disappointed. I'm glad I was with my husband as I couldn't decide what to order - so many things sounded good - so we ordered the pulled pork & coleslaw roll and the brisket roll and shared them both. I'm not sure which I preferred, they were both full of flavours and the rolls were rammed full of meat! I would definitely recommend this place to you all and I need to pay another visit soon.

The brisket roll with garlic mushrooms and rocket. Divine!

I saw a sign for this place in the West End, and my growling stomach led me to it. It's a lot smaller than I imagined it to be however the tables are like benches so it actually sits quite a few people and it's not awkward to sit beside someone you don't know. There's a good selection of food and the sandwiches and rolls are definitely worth the money. I had 'The Works' which was a full breakfast that once after eating, I thought I was going to have to be rolled out the shop. The waiter was quite a quirky guy which I liked and he was very friendly and quick to serve. The chef also came down and he too was very nice. I liked the feel of the place, we weren't hassled all the time by waiters and it's a place where you can get an actual lunch that doesn't involve burgers or cardboard sandwiches.

Oh well, I have places like Great Western Sandwich Co to sort me out. I needed a sandwich. I wanted it fast. And I had £10. I was going down GWR so stopped off here as it's one of the few places along here that I haven't tried (pls forgive me, GWS Co). I had heard good things from Yelpers though so I happily handed over my £10 (and got £5 change, mind you) for a Polo Loco sandwich. The space here would be good for hanging out in, there is actually more seating than I expected so I might eat in next time (although I don't think there are customer loos). The Polo Loco has: chicken marinated in cayenne, paprika and lime, sour cream, avocado, black beans and fried potatoes. Who puts potatoes on a sandwich? I didn't notice that when I ordered, or when I ate half of it but I've started to accept that carb-on-carb action is pretty standard in Glasgow. The sandwich didn't take long, I'm guessing around 3-4 minutes and was nicely presented for takeaway. It would cost £1 extra if I was going to eat in but I had places to be. I had the delicious smell of my sandwich taunting me the whole way home and I'm happy to say, after scoffing half of it that it really is delicious. The chicken is generous, the other toppings all work really well too and it's a hearty beast that I haven't been able to finish. Yet.

Glaswegians, your cafes have definitely spoiled me and I can't find anything that compares to this in the U.S. When you walk in, you automatically get this cozy and warm feeling. Try to get a seat in the upstairs dining area, because this is where you will feel the most warmth. I also like sitting in the bar stools by the window because I like looking outside at the rain. If you find yourself waiting for a table, just take that time to browse the pastries, savory foods laid out, and even their selection of cookbooks. Their selection of cake and tarts change daily, but if they have leftovers one day then they serve the leftovers the next day until they are gone, but a lot of the time their pastries sell out on the first day. Bonus to this is that your pastries are definitely fresh! But the pastries still taste good even if they are a day old. Trust me. My go-to pastries were the Belgian Chocolate Cake or the vanilla custard tarts. This cake has hazelnuts inside of it and is served with raspberries, chocolate bits, dusted with sugar on top. If you love chocolate, this cake is the way to go. The vanilla custard tarts reminded me of home (because I would get Egg Tarts at Chinese bakeries and this vanilla custard tart tasted just like a egg tart) The only difference is that the tart at Kember & Jones had flaky layers of crust, which made the tart even better. My go-to drinks are hot chocolate or the Moroccan Fresh Mint Tea. The hot chocolate is served with foam and little chocolate bits on top. The Mint tea is served in a clear glass, but it comes hot (which was weird because I didn't think you would serve hot drinks in a glass) but I understood why because it has a bunch of mint leaves in it that changes the color of the drink to a light tan. It's cute and if you have a sore throat, it will make you feel better. Other things that I have tried and loved were the Warm Waffle (because it was served with syrup and fresh fruit), the French Lemonade (It was pink lemonade with a little bit of sourness), and the macarons (They make different ones each week. Try all of them because they go fast! I have to say during Christmas time their Christmas pudding one tastes pretty good, too.) Last thing to note is that the staff is very nice. I never really feel pushed to leave. They are polite and attentive.

I'm a massive fan (see previous review of their St Enoch Square branch) but the only day I can make it to Nic's is a Saturday due to their opening hours and me working relatively far away. So when I heard their new establishment would be open til 11pm, 7 days a week, I was pretty excited to say the least! It's so great that the Nic's concept has really taken off, especially since most new places in Glasgow seem to be massive chain burger joints these days!!! For those who might not be aware, Nic's NYC Deli is just that. They serve glorious pressed sandwiches with delicious flavour combos, hot dogs, taco bowls and pancakes among other tasty offerings - like their amaaaazing doughnuts and American goodies such as Twinkies (which I definitely want to try at some point, just because!) This branch also has the extra addition of crepes (sweet and savoury!) so those who frequented this place as a Crêpe à Croissant can still get their fix. There's always the worry that another branch won't quite have the same feel as the one you're used to, but I'm happy to report that this definitely isn't the case with this one. I absolutely adore the decor, it's really cool without looking like it's trying too hard and the whole place looks fab! As for the food, it is as delicious as ever! The bf opted for a chili dog last night as he hadn't tried their hot dogs at all yet, and he absolutely scarfed it down, totally loved it. I got their LA Club Lite (chicken, bacon, avocado, lettuce, tomatoes and either chipotle or dijon mayo) since I hadn't had that one yet and I flipping love avocado and bacon together. It was brilliant, the bacon was done extremely well which I love, and their ciabatta bread is very tasty indeed. We were gonna get some doughnuts to take away, but our server offered us a free one each since they've just opened! Result!! I've got a Snickernut sitting in its wee bag under my desk right now, but since it's lunchtime I have a feeling it might disappear fairly soon... What more can I say? The staff are great, the food is great, the prices are great too - I think all in we paid about £12 for our food and a drink each which, for the quality and size of everything is pretty darn good! It's extremely reassuring to know that if I feel the need for a Nic's I can just pop along and get one...the downside being this might happen far too frequently from now on!!!

The deal here is made to order sandwiches. You decide whether you want a basic sandwich (on brown or white bread), a toastie panini, bagel or wrap. Then you pick a couple of fillings (extras for 70p each) and a dressing. You can add soup if you want it, or you can have your lunch made up as a salad instead. Baked potatoes are another option. They even offer jumbo hot dogs. The friendly, chatty staff take your order and hand you an order number and, five minutes later you get your food. It's take away only at the moment, but the space is big enough that they could probably add a table or two if they wanted to at a later date. Naturally, filled rolls are on the menu too, both breakfast and lunch options here, with toast and croissants available too. They sell hot and cold drinks and, interestingly, milkshakes. I think I'll have to come back for one of these - they make their own vanilla ice cream in store and have a selection of toppings to go on it, so if they milkshakes are made with the ice cream they could be pretty good. How was my food? Well, I messed up. I wasn't thinking it through and I ordered a panini filled with chicken caesar, cucumber and mustard. Let's be honest, cucumber doesn't really work in a panini, does it? Somehow, though, I got away with it and my panini was pretty great. Seriously generous on the big chunks of chicken breast and, although it didn't look huge, it was pretty filling. I'm reserving the fifth star for when I've had time to work my way through more of the menu but, as I say - so far, so good.

The student discount makes it somewhat comparable to various lunch deals in the area if you're buying a drink and crisps along side your sandwich, coming in just over £4.50. I really wish there was more seating as the one bit of bar seating available is taken as soon as three or four people walk in. That's ok, there was a bit of wall across the seat to sit on while eating lunch. The ice cream is quite lovely as well, but it doesn't compare to University Cafe down the road and it's a bit messy if you order a cone with a topping. Mine was dripping down the sides of the cone the second I was given it, but I ate it quick enough- it didn't really matter too much. The service was a bit slow when the students started rolling in, we were left waiting quite a while for one sandwich. All in all, it was an enjoyable experience. I will be back for sure to try other items available on the menu.
