Chilling with ma cakes in Piece.

Jeebus. Jeebus. Jeebus. Yeah, think that's probably the best way to start an update of this sandwich shrine to awesomeness. THe update on this review has in truth been a long tim ein coming. If truth be told, I'd probably not make the trek down to this location now that they've openend another wee place on the GWR. Perfect! But, chance would have it, I was down in this neck of the woods and in dire need of a spot o lunch. I was mulling over the options in the area (of which there are now so, so many) and the image and tastes of the egg salad, ham and cheese 'Fat Boy' popped into my head and kicked all the other images arse's. Now this is a sandwich. Having munched the humble sandwich in a number of locations throughout the world, I'd have to say that these guys churn out what has to be a very close second to those being made in San Francisco.. if not better. With fresh produce the key and the king for these guys, the grub just begs to be enjoyed, nearly as much as the banter from those working behind the counter. I like this place. I love the passion and dedication to good grub and I love the end result. Simple as that. Oh and since my initial review, they seem to have added a few more sitting options, so it feels more like somewhere you could set up with a coffee, a sandwich, oh and maybe a slice of cake (I'll save that for the next update!) and chill out.

Popped in here with the Mr and some friends on way to IMAX a few weeks ago. We'd intended have some foods but mixed our times so ended up just grabbing coffees. Which were really good - I had a latte. It was smooth, creamy, and faintly sweet - just the way I like it! The staff were really apologetic as they were just closing up, but couldn't have been friendlier. Looking forward to going back for lunch soon - the food looked amazing!

Breakfast menu (served until 11am)

Now this is a proper sandwich shop. I supposed it should come as no surprise that Piece is something of a Glasgow institution. It has been extraordinarily popular since it opened in 2008 and it's earned its popularity by consistently getting things right. Here at the flagship store you can really expect something special for your lunch. The sandwich menu is divided into meat, fish, chicken or vegetarian options, with a few breakfast options also available until 11 am. You choose you filling, choose your bread (baguette, ciabatta, bloomer or flatbread) and customise if you must (they're pretty good at getting the balance right, but will take requests if you have them). Don't fancy a sandwich? Anything can be made up as a salad. Or maybe try one of their soups which are almost always veggie and gluten free - they'll make it very clear on the rare occasions this isn't true. Or perhaps just head straight for the coffee and cake, I won't judge you. With so many amazing options available in Glasgow these days its easy to forget the humble sandwich. You needn't, though, not when Piece is elevating it from staple to superlative.

Banh Mi ciabatta

I drive past Piece at least twice a week and I got to breaking point: it was time for a visit! I've seen really tasty photos of their sandwiches posted on Yelp, and wanted to get one for myself. Located conveniently on Argyle Street, I was able to get a parking spot down the road and wandered in. I was there for a late lunch so it was pretty quiet but I was glad to see I could still get something made up fresh. I decided to go for the banh mi (note to self for future sandwiches: I really need to try something different) and took a seat at a bench/stool area along the wall. When my sandwich arrived a short time later, I was impressed. It was presented really well with a fresh salad accompanying it. I'd chose to have it on ciabatta - they also had panini or sandwich bread (brown or white). The ciabatta was fresh, soft and just the right amount of chewy. If my memory serves me right, this banh mi had pork on it rather than the more usual chicken (I'm not complaining) and also had some pickled vegetables in it. Perhaps the amount of pickled veg could be cut down as it did kind of overwhelm the taste of the sandwich. Stupidly I didn't think about taking it off myself until I'd finished. I think I was too relaxed. Anyway, this place was great. A nice vibe, friendly staff and a good location to pop in and out without faffing about. They could have more seating, but then it would probably end up awkward and crowded. I'll be back.

My experience here was a bit underwhelming unfortunately. Perhaps because there was a tide of customers coming in and only 3 servers scrambling about to collect and send out orders? I dunno. I ordered the smoked salmon ciabatta and a cup of cappuccino while the partner had the mackerel and soy cappuccino! The food was nothing to complain about, it was a pretty nice sandwich but I did have to wait a while because the server completely forgot about it. My partner ordered a few minutes after me but he had already gotten his sandwich and I had to wait. Perhaps my rumbling tummy didn't help either as I grew impatient. Once I got my partner to investigate, they served my sandwich but with no apology for the forgetfulness. I know you're busy but every customer counts yeah? Don't forget little me! Regardless the food was lovely and I did love the coffee very much! It was very well made and tasty! Would definitely go back for a cuppa and possibly a take-away lunch instead of sitting in. Maybe an update review will be in order.

The staff were friendly and chatty and more or less done the work on my behalf to be fair with regards to buying the chocolates, all I done was actually pay for them. I took a1kg 1rib Angus and pan roasted it in butter and wilted rosemary to get a good sear, then a quick 15 mins in the oven. I had it sat on some roasted beetroot puree with a port, wine and fresh beef stock reduction and the beef was some of the best I've ever eaten. Superb quality and ageing.
