I was drawn in by that immediately and knew that a steak pie would be on the menu in our house that night. First up, this is probably one of the friendliest shops I've been in. And in Glasgow, where most people are super-friendly as standard, that's saying something. The butcher had loads of chat/banter and was really helpful and kind. He knew customers names (not mine, I've never been there before and I assume he isn't psychic) and generally had a really warm demeanour that would make me return just for the chat. Onto the pie. I ended up buying 2 individual steak pies and 2 chicken pies (he was a good up-seller, too) for just over £6 which I thought was a really good price. I forgot to ask him how long they needed in the oven but with the help of Chef Google, I stuck them in for 20 minutes at 180 which was perfect. And my, what delicious pies they were. Properly filled with nice chunky bits of steak and a delicious gravy, I'm not sure I can remember having a better pie. The pastry was lovely and they were a great size for dinner. Will I go on a mission to see if they really are the best steak pies in Glasgow? Probably not - now I've discovered here I'm not sure that I'd bother going anywhere else.

While, doing so I especially take pleasure in 'investigating' their steak pies. It's kinda a foodie fetish. In a nice, wholesome good girl way. Anyway, I was very pleasantly surprised with this butcher's (though admittedly it doesn't take all that much to win me over when I know I'll have a full belly within a couple of hours - if that). It is fairly small which gives it a cosy, friendly and homely feel reminiscent of my Grandma's kitchen when she used to rustle up mince and tatties. This buyer friendly atmosphere is really helped by the chatty staff who are more than happy to provide cooking tips for marinading cuts of meat or recommending the best cut choices and cooking methods/times. Indeed, if it wasn't for receiving this well founded advice, I am certain I could very simply ruin even a 'stick in the oven' steak pie. Just ask the boy... Now, onto the steak pie. Mmmm. It is delicious. There are a range of sizes so you can have a small one to do you for a tasty dinner treat or a massive one to do a traditional dinner party or pretend to the folks that you've actually learnt how to cook. Either way, it's a good idea. The meat is really tender; the sauce thick, savoury and most importantly not too salty and the crust just perfect. If steak pie isn't your thing (???) they also have a good range of other meat products as Eleanor mentions as well as poultry, seasonal game and fresh rolls.

It's a small shop, but sells exactly what you'd expect a fishmonger to sell - fish. And chicken. The Giffnock branch does that too which is a little bit strange to me but they do say tuna is the chicken of the sea so maybe that's why. Anyway, I already had a meal planned for dinner that night but thought some fish might go nicely with it. I was making a pasta with a pea puree sauce and bacon, so the lady in the shop suggested a naturally smoked piece of haddock. It was about £3 and she wrapped it up nicely in paper which I thought was very old school. She also gave me a tip on how to cook it which I appreciated as I wasn't totally sure (I've only used smoked haddock in fish pie before). The fish was lovely and managed to go with two dinner serves of pasta with leftovers for breakfast the next morning in scrambled eggs. Pretty great value for £3. I'd definitely come back here again as they had a pretty good/fresh looking range of seafood.

They stock all the things you'd expect - nakd bars, vitamins, supplements, nuts, seeds, tinned foods and lots of items in the "free from" category. I was pretty impressed by the pricing as well, as I didn't think it was too bad - certainly not that much different from supermarket prices. I grabbed a bottle of apple cider vinegar and some cashew nut butter. Service was ok - not overly friendly, but not rude either. I hadn't realised that Jan de Vries had quite a lot of shops around the place so it's perhaps more of a chain than expected. But all up, it's a nice wee health shop if you're looking for some more obscure foods.

I popped into this wee grocer for a nosy on a day of south side wandering. Despite being fairly…read moreclose to both Hampden & Battlefield/Victoria hospital it does feel a bit out the way compared to the glut of shops on Kilmarnock Rd. It's a really fab wee store, like a smaller version of stalks & stems or roots & fruits. The couple that own the store were really friendly, quick to offer assistance, but happy to let me look around. Their fruit & veg selection is fairly uncomplicated, looked fresh and very reasonable. What I loved about it was the variety of dried, packet & tinned goods on sale. For a fairly small store they had quite a variety of goods on offer at decent prices, plenty of Fair Trade & some organic products. They also have a small selection of vegan products in the fridge by the door. It's nice to see a small, local store with such a range of products in an area I wouldn't expect it to be in. I like that it still has a local shop feel to it, I feel like that can be quite hard to find in other areas of the city. I've never tried any of the hot food (basic breakfast fayre is on offer pretty much all day) but the home-made ice cream is seriously good. There's a wee freezer with some more exotic flavoured ices as you walk in, but the star of the show is the soft vanilla... I've tried plenty of Italian ice creams served from this type of shop (it must be a Glasgow thing) but Newlands Café wins hands-down. Just don't forget to get some raspberry sauce on top! The cafe is small: it is mostly the place to get a cup of tea or coffee, although they do bacon rolls and other light snacks. These are avaialble for take away, and good for a snack or breakfast on the run.
