I dragged Stu out of his festering pit and we made our way to Grant's the Bakers. I had passed it several times while sprinting for the train and the smell emanating from the bakery almost caused me to forget all about the train and go and live in there. Hot rolls and hot drinks are available to take away at very reasonable prices. At 10.30 on a Sunday, the queue was out the door and spilling untidily onto the street. Builders, locals and hungover tramps waited patiently in front of the cake filled counter and sizzling hotplate of over-processed meats. The smell was fantastic. Thanks to the two wee wummin behind the counter the queue moved quickly. We bought 6 totty scones and hastened home to fry them! They were big, misshapen and had an almost meaty bite to them. This makes them high up there in my Totty Scone Hall of Fame. Yes, I do actually have a Totty Scone Hall of Fame. I am rather a freak, I do fear. Next time I think I'll go for an iced donut.

I've been coming here since they first opened as a tiny bakery with just a couple of tables and a grungy industrial look that seemed to scream short-term tenancy about the place. It was very much word-of-mouth that drew customers back then - a genuinely organic bakery making delicious bread that happened to serve great Fair Trade organic coffee, original soups and snacks. The 'long black' quickly became my favourite cup of coffee in Glasgow, and it still is (although it's so strong that I can't drink two of them without my eyeballs doing a shimmy!). Some years on, they have not only doubled in size by expanding into what was a neighbouring newsagent; but opened another branch on the South Side, supply many places in town with bread and also run stalls at the many farmers' markets around town. The 'Whitehill Light Rye' is still our staple bread; we buy a week's supply at a time and freeze it. For a while, Sunday brunch at Tapa was a regular occurrence; the soup choices are always unusual and delicious, usually accompanied by a veggie sandwich and of course, a Long Black, with perhaps a slice of ginger crunch or an ANZAC biscuit or two to follow. With Sunday papers and free wi-fi, it's a wonderfully indulgent experience, especially on cold winter days where you are sustained by the warmth of the ovens and the smell of fresh-baked bread and fresh-roasted coffee (yes, they have their own roaster). With its increasing popularity meaning that it's sometimes difficult to find a seat at busy times, plus the convenience of having them at our local farmers' market in the West End every couple of weeks, we don't manage to get over there as often as we used to - making it even more of a special treat when we do manage the trip of course. The bread choices have expanded over the years as they experiment with new recipes, many of which you will never see elsewhere - the spelt is yummy if you're gluten intolerant, and even the basic wholemeal is so much tastier than you find elsewhere. They also have a small selection of delicatessen goodies to tempt you, all organic naturally. Tapa have definitely pioneered and other coffee shops have followed in their wake. Come prepared to indulge yourself and remember to bring a shopping bag with you, as you'll be wanting to walk out with lots of yummy goodies.

Tonnes of people, small tables, overpriced. The staff is really nice and I bet if it weren't on a weekend, and it were not so busy, it might be a great place to go to. Or if you're there just to get a vegan snack, a brunch or some good coffee maybe it would be fine as it would serve that purpose - but to talk, to do work, it just felt so overwhelming, chaotic and loud when I was there that I couldn't get anything done.

Time to use recently honed detective skills developed after watching newly released Guy Richie buddy movie romp Sherlock Holmes..........Ok, here goes: Both shops look clean, both have offers in the window....ok so both are decent options...there must be something to seperate them in this competition of the belly.....aha, i see it, its as plain as a librarian.....one is heaving busy and one is scarily empty...in fact is that the owner standing at the window forlornly looking out, shit!, i just made eye contact. Ok so i plumped for the busy one so as not to experience the arse clenching awkwardness of having to be the only person to walk into the other place. Verdict? Nothing special but certainly nothing to worry about. Rolls, soup, toasties and the usual fare on offer , all at reasonable prices and served at breakneck pace with a hint of a smile.....no complaints form me.

This bakery is where the workers' come on their day off, picking up Chinese buns and cakes for the whole family. Char Siu bau, cocktail buns, pineapple buns, egg tarts, cakes galore and my personal fav, a £1 spam and egg bun!!! Just pick up a tray and with some tong action collect whatever tickles your fancy. Don't expect palatial surroundings, it's strictly a wipe down tiled affair and the service is... Well let's say it's efficient without a smile. But sit in or take away, it's my fav Chinese bakery in town and by the looks of it being sought out more often by us Gweilos.

I've been to several of their outlets but not really been in this one before, McDonalds bakery is really a sort of poor mans version of Gregg's but the difference is that this one has sit in facilities where you can have a soup & sandwich or bacon roll. I ordered food to go a sausage roll & a type of steak bake roughly they are similar prices to their nearest competitor With their sausage roll tasting nicer than Gregg's but their steak bake was rather tight with filling or rather lack of it and a little on the salty side. A nice enough place but certainly wouldn't be in a rush to come back.
