Since I started working in the city centre, I've been on the hunt for a reliable lunch place that isn't too far from the office. Unfortunately, beyond the Subways, supermarkets and fast food chains, these seem to be few and far between.
And then I walked past Piece.
I'll admit I'd forgotten all about this place, despite having read good reviews, so I was glad to see it popup when I fired up Yelp to try and find somewhere 'new' to eat last week.
Tucked away on Miller Street it offers what I guess are called artisanal sandwiches (I really should stop using the word artisanal without looking it up!) which translates to tasty bread options, with a good selection of quality fillings. They have a set menu of fillings, some prepared sandwiches which are handy if you are in a rush, and always have a nice selection of sweet cakes and biscuits as well.
All of the sandwiches have names, but as I've only been twice all I can say is that the salmon and harissa, on a seeded baguette, was wonderful - tender flakes of salmon, some oriental spiced coleslaw, and a nice kick from the harissa - as was the other two sandwiches I've had as well, one of which was from the specials menu which looks like it changes everyday, so keep an eye out as you walk in, it's written on the board outside.
I was suitably impressed after my first visit - which also include an absolutely wonderful slice of brownie - to visit again today.
My only complaint, the staff are a little standoff-ish. The first time I visited I was properly overwhelmed by the menu board - there is a lot to take in - and when I said I'd need a minute I got the impression that wasn't really ok, but maybe the guy was just having a bad day...
Top tip - two sandwiches for £4.50 is a great deal that allows you to try two flavours without feeling massively full!
So, with only one gripe about the customer service (what price a smile!) it's safe to say I'll be back again as they have plenty of variety of ingredients that my lunchtime sandwich will no longer be a soggy tuna affair from Sainsburys, but a fresh, vibrant and wholesome sandwich from Piece.
I have, however, yet to discover if they'll do me a piece and jam... read more
