I like this place, it's a lovely, dinky place to hang out.
Perched on my stool on the mezzanine, like a walloping great canary, I found it a great place to have a coffee, people watch, and really, just relax.
And it IS a very relaxing place. There's plenty of natural light, there was non-intrusive music playing, and the gentle hub-bub of chat. You can watch the hip Finnieston world go by (ten points for every ridiculous beard) or peer down on the folks below, resisting the urge to throw tiny things into the decorative french bread display below. I also really liked the beautifully carved little bar upstairs - it's really lovely to sit at.
I had an Americano coffee, because that's my coffee. I don't drink any other version. Check me being all hardcore an' that. They have a sign that says they have Artisan Roast or Dear Green. Sadly, they had run out of Artisan Roast, so Dear Green it was. I really really want to like Dear Green. I'm from Glasgow, it's a Glasgow coffee, and it's called Dear Green - I mean come on, what's not to love and swear undying allegiance to? Well, to start, there's the taste of it. I'm sorry *whispers* - I don't really like it. I've only had it twice and the first time I thought that maybe there was something wrong with it. Nope - it's supposed to taste that way. I'm in no way a coffee expert, but to my tastes, it's weirdly acidic and a bit sour. I know other folk go nuts for it - each to their own.
I had no cake. There is no vegan cake. Although, I have to say, the nice woman explained it very graciously. Simon H on the other hand, made up for it with a big scone, and some sort of milky effort of a coffee. We also bought some ciabattas for later, and made some mighty proper garlic bread with it. T'was tasty.
I'd definitely go back to this Seb & Mill. I was intimidated for a while about going in, because I didn't know what it actually was - there's no sign over the doorway outside. So me with my paranoid android hat on is thinking 'should I know what this place is... can you only go in if you're in the know? I certainly don't want to stumble in, ask what the place is, then reverse out cos I'm not cool enough... Maybe they're just arrogant - they're so cool that they don't need a sign...' The answer to all of this is that the reason that they don't have a sign is because they are a small business, and they are seeing how it goes, and just building bit by bit. So next up, maybe a sign outside, maybe some breakfast options. They definitely would like to expand their food range. They seem like nice people, and I hope they build this wee place into a roaring success.
And next time, hopefully I can have an Artisan Roast. read more
