I've been a customer of marks deli,in its previous location in battlefield for around 20 years,my reason initially for visiting them was to buy the "chefs secret",the wonderful telma brand stock cubes, full of flavour, not salty, recently in the observer food monthly a very famous chef was pictured in his kitchen, piles of these stacked behind him. I also was married to a kosher chef, worked for a Jewish care organization part time which,as the food laws forbade non kosher food on the premises, provides food for staff, very good it was too,New staff who complained that their insipid sandwiches were disallowed soon changed their tune when heaping plates of roast chicken, fabulous coleslaw/salads ,sbraised steak, were there on an eat as much as you like basis, hot fried gefilte fish so it's fair to say I know a thing about kosher food. Also,as milk and meat are not mixed this suits me as i am not a dairy fan, marks deli has excellent dairy free cream, ice cream etc that isnt at all like the soya/almond onesdeli also was a great source of supplies such as ice cream. I was feeling a bit poorly after a serious stomach bug and went in search of that well known cure all jewish penicillin, they have a little cafe now too, which il definetly be returning to,short menu but fish is a staple, also salads and specials, facebook sometimes have details, but takeaway it was, plus some groceries. I got a hot carton of said soup plus a falafel platter, the soup, touch wood, seems to have actually settled my tummy once and for all,its basically a clear stock with lokshen (noodles)and kneidlach (dumpling ),not big on the latter but the golden clear soup was good, and stock this clear is difficult to achieve, I added salt and pepper, also got a falafel platter, falafel were very good, well seasoned, crisp and plentiful, little pots of olives, unexeptonal, and hummus, very good, rich, and secret sauce, excellent, I want more, and more. Nice pitta too.I've reduced a point as sauce just not enough and olives nothing special though ok,good value, around 7 pounds for soups platter, they don't put take way prices on menu so I was pleasantly surprised. I picked up more soup from chilled, plus stock cubes to add to the pile I have, and biscuits, plus telma chicken noodle soup mix, fabulous a pound,2 sachets making a pint. Worth a visit, their Facebook page has information re specials, hot salt beef sandwiches are on every day and apparantly excellent. Dairy free eaters need worry not, everything is parev,a eaning can be mixed with meat,so no dairy in the cafe at all,a great guarantee. Mark the owner also happens to be the cheeriest chap in the world, beaming constantly,I've never seen him at all grumpy, staff in General also chatty, helpful. Take a look while your in at the meat, kosher meat, for complex reasons explained to me by the late Mr Madisky, is very expensive, 3 times the price of non kosher, its also very good. AndBAGEL BUYERS,please note,Friday is the start of Jewish Sabbath, Mark's is obviously closed on Saturday, fresh goods like this are likely to have become low in stock. Email them for bagel delivery days because they are truly amazing,if you've only had supermarket ones your in for a treat,go in when they have just come in,prepare to be addicted, slso worth checking if it's a Jewish holiday,of which there are lots, and lots read more
