Matcha latte
Elaine D.

This cafe has recently just opened in Shawlands and we were lucky enough to get a table late this afternoon. I knew they had available a tasty vegan-friendly bakewell tart - which is made by a vegan friend of mine who has her own cake business - so guessed they'd also have vegan savouries. I opted for a spinach, tomato, and avocado sandwich, and swapped the siracha for beetroot hummus. They also have another couple of veggie sandwich options, and meat options including bacon, chicken, salmon, or pastrami. Chips or soup can be added to a sandwich for an additional £2; they ran out of the potato & leek so tomato & basil was offered as an alternative. They have Teapigs tea and Dear Green Coffee. I opted for a matcha soy latte as I spotted it on the menu and fancied a hot drink that was a bit more unusual than an americano; it was beautifully presented but might go for something else next time, I haven't acquired a matcha taste and needed to add sugar. They have a fridge stocked with a good selection of sodas including the usual Irn Bru etc., and also some Fentimans flavours. They have one toilet cubicle - the cafe isn't that big - with hand towels available (no awful low powered hand dryer). Staff are friendly and attentive. I'm not out in the Southside that often for coffee but will definitely be back.

Chips! £2 extra with a sandwich.

Cracking wee cafe that's just opened in Shawlands. While it's not the biggest space in the world, its a great place to spend some time. The big caveat to this 5 star review is that I haven't tried the coffee, so if this is your main thing then I'm not able to give you any guidance. It's Dear Green coffee that they use, which I've heard is good, but how good a brew they do is something I can't comment on. Having said that, I recommend that you go and try for yourself. As I've said, it's not a massive space - one table that will seat 4, and about another half a dozen tables that seat 2. In spite of this it doesn't feel too cramped, and you don;t feel like you're eavesdropping on other peoples conversations - we were sharing the big table with other couple of folk and you would hardly know. The decoration is simple but relaxing, with some cool wee touches that stand out, and the music was cool enough that you noticed it (Reservoir Dogs soundtrack) but not loud enough that you focussed on it. The main draw here for me was the food. The cafe isn't doing anything particularly fancy: it's standard cafe stuff like cooked breakfasts, sandwiches, and the like. What it is doing is selling you good, comfortable (very) tasty food at fantastic prices, basically like cafes used to do. The all-day breakfasts are around the £5-£6 mark, which is unheard of nowadays, and my sandwich was a pretty big doorstop one, and was about the same price. A branded mug full of chunky chips is an extra £2 on top, and they were;t taking the mick with the soft drink prices. This definitely isn't a case of you getting what you pay for. As I said, I really liked what I had, and the price was just a bit of an extra bonus. If you're in Shawlands and you fancy a snack and a drink while you read the paper (or give the dog a rest - it's dog friendly!) then I can't think of a better place to try.

Wow!! I wish I could give this place 7 stars. The atmosphere, service, coffee and food were all excellent. I had the eggs in the skillet with the the tomato sujo sauce, really savory. We also had "that guy" which was "divine" (son's words). Pet friendly and great music. How about a NY location guys?? Thanks for a great time.

Baked eggs

So I finally sat in Cafe Strangebrew, yay! The menu is small, with breakfast served till 2pm and brunch and lunch items on all day. If you like eggs there's plenty to choose from with baked eggs and variations of eggs benedict, eggs royale etc and a few varieties of french toast. Plus sandwhiches and soup. Coffee is supplied by Dear Green, tea from Tea Pigs and eggs from Corrie Mains farm which I love (my newsagent sells them and they are super tasty). Today I had the bacon french toast which was huge! So big I couldn't finish it, good to know about the big portions in future when I'm starving though. I actually wanted the eggs benedict with chilli hollandaise but there was no sauce left and there would be half our wait on another batch being made. Good to know they make that from scratch. My husband had the baked eggs with sourdough which looked good too. Missing out on a fifth star as we waited quite a while to be served and previous takeaway breakfast rolls were just standard..but apart from that it's all good, definitely worth a sit in trip. Glad to have another decent cafe on our doorstep

To put it simply, this place is fantastic. Friendly staff, banging food and wonderful decor. You'd be hard pushed to find a better brunch spot in the Southside of Glasgow. The coffees are sublime. I brew my own Dear Green Coffee at home, but this place gets it just right (puts my wannabe barista skills to shame). I went for the poached eggs, avocado and salmon on sourdough toast. It was perfect. The portion size was just the right amount. Fresh and flavoursome - could not fault it one bit. There's a certain charm about this place to and not the usual hipster-esque type that Glasgow cafes seem to have adopted of late. It's unobtrusive and elegant. It's not overcrowded either, which I really liked. The staff are equally as unobtrusive and super friendly - a real credit to this place. All in all, a wonderful experience and one that I hope to repeat in the near future. Thanks guys!

So excited about this menu!!! Yum xxx

Once we sat down in the charming tearoom, we were greeted by a friendly and accommodating server. We ordered the afternoon tea. There was a perfect balance of sweet and savory with yummy finger sandwiches and delectable scones with clotted cream and jam. This is a lovely afternoon tea spot for all ages!

I had their house chai and their London fog, both of which were creamy and SO flavorful and served in the loveliest teapots. The finger sandwiches and cakes were also really good and I actually did leave full, as did my travel companions. The servers were friendly and checked in often, and the place itself was actually fairly big (had 2 floors and we sat in a corner on the second floor), but it had a quant feel. The cost per person was reasonable in my opinion at £16 per person for a mini pot of tea and selection of sandwiches and tea cakes. We really enjoyed our experience there and I would recommend it to anyone looking to have a lovely afternoon tea!

"Pals" would be set in what is actually quite a cosily comforting scene - reminiscent of 80s coffee shops with their wee open booths, brown formica, plastic sauce bottles and those wee vinegar decanters your gran used to have. The staff are friendly, efficient and what you'd call "characters". There is an ever-rotating cast of taxi drivers, local shop owners and just regular Joes popping in for their rolls in bacon, lattes (always pronounced with no Ts audible) to go and their soup. I actually really love popping in here now and again, as there is always a funny story to overhear and their food is cooked to order and tasty. A roll in bacon is always a good shout, never been disappointed. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area and looking for no-frills eats.

This is not a Soup Kitchen per se, but if you're a person of need, you can enter via a side door for free soup and hot beverages to go. They have been in operation since 2015, and in their first three years of operation, have given away 12,000 meals and 13,500 hot beverages! Again, BRAVO!!! Lovely wee, wee, wee all the way home deli....sorry, too much coffee (jitter, jitter, twitch,…read morejitter) Aye so, this is quite the littlest of little places that is more deli and sandwich takeaway than sitty down eat type joint. Now there area couple of high chairs at the window, but if like me you prefer to be closer to the deck when your eating then this wont appeal. With a lovely collection of organic, free rangey, fair trade, raised by monks in the Himalayas on rice cakes, wheat free wheat and green tea type stuff, this looks to be a nice wee place to pick yourself up a treat every now and again (it was pretty damn hard to leave this place without some of the organic raspberry jam they had....tough tough tough) Aye so, i reckon this is a nice joint o pick up a sandwich on the go or maybe some soup, however its never going to be my first choice to grab a sit down coffee from. I had a wee bit of hope that this cafe would be a gem in my hood but alas, tis not. It's just ... ok? I wouldn't go out of my way to go here unless I really needed to, like if I was late for work and didn't have a packed lunch. I've sat in here for breakfast once. The lady behind the counter is alright, at times she seems a bit cold but then again, it's early in the morning so I don't expect everyone to be a ray of sunshine haha. The baked goods are ok, some quite sweet but still not bad! Croissants are baked fresh every day so at least thats good! The coffee however is really quite atrocious. If you want coffee, walk another 5-10 mins to Tapa and don't be lazy by ordering from here cause I really think it's a wast of perfectly good money lol. The pasta they have made is not bad. I packed something with tomato sauce and some sausages in it for takeaway and it was quite good although pretty sure it wasn't fresh and made the day before. Still ok if you need a last minute packed lunch! Verdict : it's ok but wouldn't go out of my way to go for a visit. They sell some dried food like pasta and French stuff so perhaps just to buy stuff like that? Don't order coffee lol

I wasn't sure where the cafe was in the park - if you're driving and wanting to park near to the closest entrance, park near the Lubnaig Road entrance and it's only about a 1 minute walk from there. The cafe is in the tennis pavilion and it's a beautiful restoration job, appealing from the outside and cosy inside. I didn't expect it to be quite so busy on a Thursday afternoon but nearly every table was taken - thankfully I managed to grab one of the last ones. There's seating for about 30 people inside (at a rough guess) as well as some seats outside if you want to brave the cold. There's table service so I had a quick look over the menu and knew that French Toast was what I needed for the day. Served with bacon or berry compote and for £7.50 I was pretty impressed with the portion - on lovely thick bread it was just the right size and a good amount of compote (I actually didn't need it all, which was a first). I love that breakfast is served all day and can see myself heading back here very soon. It's got a nice vibe to it and the staff were pretty friendly. The menu might be short but I actually prefer that over a really long menu where you can tell that nothing will be fresh. Notes: - kid friendly - dog friendly (outside undercover seating area) - wifi (password is at the till) - lots and lots of luscious cakes - table service

Based on this morning's visit it looks like they've got the measure of their local customers. Yummy mummies ( and grans ) were out in force with their babes and toddlers as were a fair selection of the park's dogs (accompanied by their doting walkers). Dogs are welcome at the outside tables and in the covered enclosed area along the front of the building. A waitress distributed some complimentary dog muffins which no doubt will ensure repeat visits - dog icecream is also available I believe. My dog loving but not dog owning companion was in heaven. The decor is bright and tasteful - love the unusual vintage chairs - and the staff are friendly and helpful. The fruit scone was freshly baked and one of the nicest I've had recently. Served with home made jam it was a little smaller than some but that's not necessarily a bad thing, some scones are so enormous they're a tad off putting. The food we saw going to other tables looked tasty, including a cloud of fluffy scrambled eggs. There's a small selection of foody goodies and well chosen craft items on sale.

I was only here in the bar for a drink after work but it is such a lovely and cool place to hang about it. Some might say living in the West End I am spoiled for choice for hip bars/venues but I really don't think there's anywhere WE quite like the Glad Cafe. It reminds me more of Stereo or Mono in that not only is the GC a great place to have a drink but also does really nice food (so I hear) and puts on gigs and other such events. It's what Shawlands/the South Side has been crying out for. If I lived local this would most definitely be my local. Beers on tap the evening I went were Brooklyn Lager, William's Lager and Caesar Augustus, West Munich Red and a Sam Smith's beer. This is a really good selection for a place the size it is. Prices were not too bad either ~ £3.50 for a pint of the William's Bros. lager. They also had some nice bottled beers too, including the Drygate beers. The wine list looked pretty substantial also and again, pretty good prices. I did have an issue with the West Munich Red beer in that it tasted bizarre/off but thankfully the nice girl serving let me choose another beer instead. I like the decor, furniture and layout of the cafe, it feels very boho and being in here on a Winters evening with all the wee tealights lit it was delightfully cosy & just what I needed after a long, tiring week. If you want to come here for food I noticed the kitchen stops serving at 7pm which surprised me as just assumed this was a place were folk could come for an evening meal but obviously it really is more a 'cafe' than just the name suggests. Great place, lovely vibe and providing that little bit something extra for the area ~ I'm a fan.
